Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

  Process for the production of proteinoplasts which have a pearly appearance throughout the mass.

   Some art masses, e.g. B. the celluloid, and the moldings made from them can be given a mother-of-pearl appearance by adding certain additives; in proteinoplasts, d. H. the masses or molded pieces made from casein or other protein bodies, the same effect is not achieved by the same additives. During the tests it was found that the addition of powdery white bismuth compounds of small particle size causes a mother-of-pearl-like appearance to be created for proteinoplasts. To achieve this purpose, z. B. fine-powdered bismuth oxide hydrate use; the particle size is expediently not more than 10 u.

   A simultaneous addition of finely powdered silver-colored metal, such as bismuth, aluminum and the like, serves to increase the effect. a., or an addition of bismuth halogen salts or basic bismuth halogen salts.

   In further experiments it has been shown that other water-insoluble oxides, hydroxides and also water-insoluble salts, e.g. B. talc or Speekstein powder of small particle size, alone or better in a mixture with bismuth oxide hydrate can be used for the same purpose, also benzanilide, water-insoluble salicylates and benzoates of white or light appearance.

   For the purpose of producing such proteinoplasts of mother-of-pearl-like appearance, the powdery substances of small particle size are added to casein or other protein substances in relatively small quantities, e.g. B. of the bismuth compounds about 0'2% -0'5% and of the metallic powders about 0'2%. The moistened mixture is processed into the mass and shaped pieces in the usual way.

   PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the production of proteinoplasts which have a pearly appearance through the whole mass, characterized in that small amounts of powdery white or light-colored water-insoluble substances of small particle size are added to the moistened protein base materials used for the production of the proteinoplasts before processing into plastic mass or shaped pieces will.
