Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the preparation of salts of iodomethanesulfonic acid.
It has been found that by the action of salts of sulphurous acid on iodoform in aqueous solution and in the presence or absence of organic solvents with warming, the salts of iodomethanesulphonic acid can be obtained in one operation with good yield. If the reaction mixture is kept or made neutral or weakly alkaline, the neutral reaction products formed under these circumstances can easily be separated from one another.
Of the salts of sulphurous acid, the alkali and alkaline earth salts are preferred, but also the salts with ammonia and organic bases, such as methylamine, dimethylamine, ethylenediamine. Piperidine. Piperazine et al. like .. proved to be suitable for the implementation.
Example: A mixture of 500 parts by weight of iodoform, 70 parts by weight of calcium carbonate, 340 parts by weight of sodium sulphite (95 "/ oing) and 3000 parts by weight of water is kept at a gentle boil for 24 hours with stirring and reflux cooling The completely dry, powdered residue is extracted several times with acetone to remove the incidentally formed sodium iodine. The sodium iodomethanesulfonic acid is then exhaustively extracted from the residue with methanol, the sodium sulfate also formed in the reaction remaining.
By concentrating the methanol solution, sodium iodomethanesulfonic acid is obtained, which is optionally obtained in a completely pure state by redissolving.
