So

Fillunl for adsorption devices, in particular for smoke and gas masks.
It is known that by condensation and (or) polymerization of. \ Cetylene in the presence of small amounts of magnesium, cuprene is obtained, which has special properties and is an excellent adsorbent for various substances and which in particular has the ability to hold back smoke and mist. The cuprene produced in this way is therefore particularly suitable for use as a filling for smoke and gas masks.
In the practical use of copper in gas masks, however, one encounters a difficulty.
EMI1.1
attempts to reduce this resistance by transforming the copper in some way into a granular state or by distributing it on carriers, it turns out that in general the desired goal is not achieved. If the resistance is sufficiently reduced, one finds. that the

can, if you bring the active copper under certain conditions on wool as a carrier. It showed see. that particularly uncombed, washed wool is very suitable for this purpose.
The cupren can be distributed on the wool in various ways. According to the invention you can, for. B. suspend the cuprene in a liquid wetting the cuprene, such as in a mixture of alcohol and water, soak the wool with this suspension and then dry it. In this case it is advisable to use the wool in the form of wool felt. For this purpose z. B. a felt with a weight of about 7 g for 1 dm2 can be used.
In practice, this process has proven to be rather cumbersome and also costly.
According to the invention, however, very favorable results can also be achieved by mixing the wool in the dry state with the required amount of copper. For this purpose, the wool is transformed into a uniform, disordered state; then the required amount of copper is mixed through the mass, which z. B. can be done by hand. Care must be taken that the cuprene is distributed homogeneously on the wool and adheres to the fiber, while the even, loose structure should be retained.
It was found that the result depends on the ratio of the wool and cupren amounts in the filling. This ratio can be determined empirically for the type of wool to be used: good results are achieved with a ratio of about three parts of cuprene to ten parts of wool. The mass loaded with cuprene is now placed in a filter canister, u. between in a layer of such thickness. that the same holds back smoke and mist completely and still the resistance remains below the permissible limit. When filling, you have to make sure that the even, disordered structure of the wool mass is also preserved in the can, so that the air resistance is practically the same in all parts of the filling.
In many cases it is advisable to use the copper filling produced in this way at the same time as another gas-adsorbing filling. For this purpose, a filling consisting of any adsorption carbon or a chemically active substance can be used. So

provide a standing filling or you can mix the Norit with the wool-cuprene filling.
The filter canisters produced in this way have significant advantages over the known devices. Smoke and fog are produced with a relatively low resistance
EMI2.2
keeping from smoke was necessary. that the air in the adsorption mass is temporarily at rest. a can should therefore have a free content that corresponds at least to the volume of one breath (about 1. 1). so that there is enough air in the filling for the next breath during exhalation.
However, a filling according to the invention will also retain smoke and mist if the air passes through the filling in a constant current.
EMI2.3
Tending cans completely hold back all mist and gases, so that a single breathing bag is sufficient for old cases and the cans do not have to be changed depending on the type of substance to be retained.
The invention has been described particularly with regard to the manufacture of filter canisters for gas and smoke masks. However, the invention can also be used in other cases where soft fog must be retained, e.g. B. be used in adsorption devices for condensing mists occurring in certain manufacturing processes.
