G. Farbenindustrie A. G. ist Leuko-Indigo-Schwefelsäure-Ester.

Method for reserving vat colorations, particularly the indanthrene vat.
Reserves are often used to reserve vat dyeings, which contain water-soluble salts in addition to the thickening, u. between preferably water-soluble salts of zinc, copper, manganese and lead. The use of all these water-soluble additives has the disadvantage that the goods printed with them cannot be steamed because some of the salts are too hygroscopic and therefore flow out in the steam (which makes the outlines of the pattern blurred), and in some cases they split off acid and thereby affecting the strength of the tissue. Furthermore, colored patterns with such reserves can only be obtained by over-dyeing in vats by incorporating diazo solutions into the white reserves containing metal salts and printing them on naphthol-prepared goods. The color combinations are therefore limited.
These colorful effects are also largely less authentic.
According to the present process, printing pastes are used as reserves which contain water-insoluble, oxidizing pigment-like substances in suspension and also adhesives that do not lose their adhesive strength over the duration of a short passage under the influence of the alkaline vat liquid or even retain it. The idea of the invention is to reserve
EMI1.1
be held superficially in such a way that the reserve of coloration also withstands sufficiently in the hot vat. This idea of the invention could be realized by using adhesives as binders which, thanks to their special nature, identified above, fix the insoluble substances for as long as it is necessary in the vat passage for the reservation.
The duration of passage through the vat and the concentration of the latter must be selected according to the adhesive strength of the reserve pressure; the passage time may be significantly shorter than the usual.
After coloring, the reserve is removed by acidifying and watering in the known manner. By choosing insoluble substances as additives which, due to their oxidizing properties, reoxidize the leuco dye of the vat at the printed areas, the printing pastes used according to the invention belong to the chemically as well as mechanically effective reserves.
This type of reserve pressure has the advantage that the reserved fabric can be dampened without losing sight of the reserved pattern and without damaging the fibers. Above all, this gives the possibility of illuminating the prints in very different ways and with the achievement of colorful effects of the highest authenticity. For this purpose, a printing ink which can be fixed by steaming together with the corresponding fixing agents, in particular an indigosol dye and water-soluble oxidizing agents for developing this dye, is added to the reserve. The goods printed with reserves are steamed to develop the dye and then colored, acidified and watered in the vat as usual.
Such reserves can also be used with advantage as white reserves without dye. According to a special embodiment of the process, water-soluble oxidizing agents are also incorporated into the dye-free reserves in order to increase the effect of the reserve in a manner known per se by reoxidizing the vat dye on the printed areas.
Since the reserves withstand the steaming process undamaged, the invention allows
EMI1.2
As water-insoluble additives which have an oxidizing effect on the leuco dye of the vat and which are suspended in the printing paste according to the invention are preferably: the water-insoluble chromates of lead, zinc, barium, furthermore the insoluble ferric anates such as ferricyanide,
EMI1.3
insoluble super oxides such as manganese monster (manganese superoxide), lead superoxide and the like Like. As an adhesive, native (natural, undigested) starch has proven its worth above all other.
The unswollen native starch is broken down by the lye in the vat at the printed areas and transformed into what is known as a device that holds the insoluble protective substance loosely attached to the fibers long enough during its passage through the vat, even when the dye is hot. In addition to native starch, the adhesive component of the printing paste also advantageously contains glue or albumin or colorisin or mixtures of these substances. Colorisin is a cellulose alkyl ether marketed by I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G.
In addition to the additives that act according to the invention, the printing paste naturally contains thickeners of known composition. In addition, as is usually the case, substances can be added to it, the reserving effect of which is only of a mechanical nature, such as lead sulfate, basic lead carbonate and the like. Like. Such additives have proven very useful in some cases.
The most valuable result of the process is that it enables the use of indigosols as printing inks to achieve colorful effects under vat dyeing. It can be done that way

rich nuances are provided. Indigosol 0 from 1. G. Farbenindustrie A. G. is a leuco-indigo-sulfuric acid ester. The other indigosols also marketed by the 1. G. Farbenindustrie A.G. are likely to be similar compounds, their exact composition is not known.
Such indigosols have hitherto mainly been used for direct printing or for the production of reserved-bazar block dyeings on white goods, whereby the indigosol is either incorporated together with sodium nitrite in a printing paste or block ink and after printing in a sulfuric

also contains sodium chloride and vanadium salts, and developed through steaming (steaming process). In addition, chlorate etchings with indigo sols have recently been produced on indigo. Indigo sols could not be used up to now to illuminate the reserve pressure under pots, because the known reserves, which contain water-soluble copper, lead, zinc or manganese salts, cannot be used for this purpose.
The indigosols are not only very sensitive to acids, but also to salts.
The vat reserves composed according to the invention and withstood the steaming undamaged behave quite indifferently to indigo sols, so that the indigo sols can be incorporated into them as a reserve color in addition to water-soluble oxidizing agents which serve to develop the color, so that the color can then be added before the fabric is colored develop the vat by steaming. As oxidizing agents for developing the indigosols, all compounds and mixtures already used for this purpose when printing directly on a white background are suitable, such as B. sodium chloride in combination with vanadium salts. Other soluble chlorates are equally useful.
Of course, sodium nitrite can also be used in conjunction with compounds that split off acids in the steam, such as sol developer D (composition unknown, manufacturer 1. G. Farbenindustrie AG) or acetin, ethyltartaric acid, citric acid ammonia or sodium chlorate in connection with blood liquor salt, as recommended by the indigo-producing dye works will be used.
Likewise, water-soluble reserve additives already used in the present process can also be used advantageously in the case of reserve printing under dyeings with vat dyes, such as e.g. B. Ludigol (according to the manufacturer, 1. G. Farbenindustrie A. G., the water-soluble sodium salt of nitrobenzenesulfonic acid). Instead of Ludigol, other nitro compounds (such as picric acid) can also be used, as well as the insoluble barium compound, which is commercially available from Ludigol by reaction with barium salts.
An indigosol reserve can be composed as follows, for example:

The reserves are advantageously printed on mercerized goods prepared with Turkish red oil, whereupon the goods pass twice through the Mather flat quick steamer to develop the indigosols and are colored in a hot indanthrene-long glucose hydrosulfite vat, indanthrene hydrosuIfit decorative vat or in an indigo vat. After dyeing, it is acidified as usual, washed, soaped with hot water and washed again.
Chromium dyes, for example, are to be mentioned of other dyes which can be fixed by steaming and which, without being fast to diindanthrene, can be added to the printing paste instead of the indigosols. dz

The generally customary methods can readily be used to combine the white or colored reserves with aniline black printing.
Zinc chromate has been used in connection with copper and lead salts as an etching reserve for printing on light blue indigo pre-colored goods (collective work of the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik "Indigo rein", page 220/21). The purpose of the copper and lead salts is to reserve the further over-coloring, while the insoluble zinc-eromatous has the task of etching the pre-colored light indigo blue on the printed areas in a subsequent acid bath. Prussian blue has also already been used as an additive to reserves under indigo vat dyeings (l. C. Page 208). In this case the Berlin blue addition in the vat reserve had the purpose of creating a light blue in the printed areas by coloring the fiber (printed Berlin blue sticks fairly firmly to raw, uncooked cotton).
