While 1,3-diaminopropanols (2) symmetrically substituted on both nitrogen atoms have been known for a long time, because they are formed in the reaction of α-dichlorohydrin or epichlorohydrin with bases and, given their easy accessibility, are used industrially as starting materials for the manufacture of

for the unsymmetrically substituted.
It has been found that the tertiary aminoepihydrins (M. 15 [1894] 119), some of which are poorly described in the literature and have not yet been investigated in their reactions, can easily be obtained from epichlorohydrin and secondary bases under suitable conditions and by reaction with Ammonia or primary or secondary amines give unequally substituted 1,3-diaminopropanols (2) on both nitrogen atoms. Compounds in which one amino group is tertiary and the other is either a different tertiary or a secondary or a primary group are accessible.
The compounds that can be prepared by the present process are intended to serve as intermediates for the production of medicinal products.

the temperature of the mixture is kept between 28 and 30 by cooling. When, after about two hours, the heat of reaction has largely subsided, the mixture is kept at 28-30 ° for a further two to three hours by heating. The reaction product is thereupon with 500 Velum-

lye (400 BP) shaken well for 45 to 60 minutes, with sodium chloride deposition taking place with little self-heating.
The easily mobile layer, now consisting of crude α = diethylaminoepihydrin, is separated from the salt solution, shaken briefly with a little 5000 potassium hydroxide solution and, after separation, distilled in vacuo.
The α-diethylaminoepihydrin (KP760 = 155-159), which dissolves from 40 to 50 mm at 8 mm, is a colorless, strongly base-smelling, easily mobile liquid that is miscible with water and is separated out again from the aqueous solution by sodium hydroxide solution. If the substance is stored for a long time, a change occurs slowly in that a viscous oil separates.
66 parts by weight of x-diethylaminoepihydrin are quickly heated to 1000 in a pressure vessel with 850 parts by weight of 2000 methyl alcoholic ammonia and kept at this temperature for 30 minutes. After cooling and after distilling off the methyl alcohol under ordinary pressure

is miscible and can be salted out of the aqueous solution by potassium carbonate.
The course of the reaction can be shown as follows:

Example 3: 98 parts by weight of piperidine are added dropwise to 100 parts by weight of epichlorohydrin with stirring and cooling at a temperature of 28-30. The heat of reaction is quite considerable; after one to one and a half hours it has completely subsided. The mixture is left to stand for a further three hours, then extracted once with 20% strength potassium carbonate solution and then shaken with 150 parts by volume of sodium hydroxide solution (40 Be) for one hour. The thin oil layer is separated off, dried over potassium hydroxide and distilled in vacuo: the α-piperidinoepihydrin is obtained with a boiling point of 8 = 72-77G.
100 parts by weight of x-piperidinoepihydrin are heated to 1000 with a solution of 280 parts by weight of ammonia in 1500 parts by weight of methyl alcohol in the bomb and held at this temperature for 30 minutes. Fractionation gives the 1-amino-3-piperidinopropanol- (2) as a color

The l-amino-3-phenylmethyl-aminopropanol- (2) separated out by fractionation is a slightly yellowish, thick oil from the Kip 205-210 'which soon solidifies to a uniform, colorless crystal mass on standing; F = 71.
