Process for converting cyanates into cyanides.

It has been found that cyanates can be converted quantitatively into cyanides by the action of reducing gases at elevated temperatures. The cyanates can be used in pure form or in mixtures with other salts or substances
Example 1: Hydrogen is passed through molten potassium cyanate at 750- ('until the gas leaves anhydrous. A melt of almost pure potassium cyanide remains.

Example 2: Carbon oxide is passed over a mixture of sodium cyanate and magnesia or (graphite, which serve as an inert lean agent, until no more carbon dioxide is formed. The melt, the cyanate of which is almost quantitatively converted into cyanide. can be processed on cyan sodium in a manner known per se.
