Abstract
Las pilas, tales como las pilas alcalinas son usadas comunmente como fuentes de energía. Generalmente las pilas alcalinas comprenden un cátodo, un ánodo,un separador y una solucion electrolítica. El cátodo está formado típicamente por un materialact ivo (por ej., dioxido de manganeso), partículas de carbono yun ligante. El ánodo puede ser un gel que incluye un material activo (por ej. partículas de zin.). El separador está colocado usualmente entre el cátodo y elánodo. La solucionelectrolítica, que está dispersada en la pila puede ser una solucion de hidroxido. Las pilas alcalinas incluyen las pilas convencionalesAA, AAA, AAAA, C y D vendidas comunmente en los negocios. Estas pilas alcalinas convencionales comprenden unreceptáculo cilíndr ico que contiene un ánodo degel de zinc cilíndrico, central rodeado por un cátodo de dioxido de manganeso en forma de anillo. Generalmente, para una pila se desea que tenga larga vida.Una medida de la vida de una pila es elperíodo de tiempo que la p ila puede descargarse bajo una carga dada antes de que el voltaje caiga a un nivelinaceptable. Una pila que comprende: una carcasa; un primer electrodo dentro de la carcasa; un segundo electrodo que comprende unapluralidad de cavidadesdentro del pri mer electrodo; y un separador entre cada una de las cavidades y el primer electrodo; en donde cada una de las cavidades se encuentra a unadistancia mínima (d1) de la carcasa y a una distancia mínima (d2) de cadauna de las otras cavidades, encontránd ose cada relacion d2:d1 para cada una de lascavidades entre 1,5:1 y 2,5:1. La pila en donde el segundo electrodo está compuesto por dos de las cavidades y las cavidades generalmente tienen forma de D.Lascavidades en forma de D pueden comprender cada una un lado plano, y los lados planos se enfrentan entre sí. El segundo electrodo puede comprender tres ocuatro de las cavidades y dichas cavidades tienen generalmente forma triangular y cada una tieneuna esquina orientada hacia el centro de la pil a. La piladescripta en donde el primer electrodo es un cátodo comprende dioxido de manganeso. El segundo electrodo es un ánodo que comprende zinc.
