Abstract

Se describen fragmentos de ácidos nucleicos aislados que codifican enzimas biosintéticas de aceites de Limnanthes. Específicamente, un fragmento aislado deácidos nucleicos que codifica una delta-5 acil-CoA desaturasa o una acilo graso-CoA elongasa ysu complementario. Una realizacion adicional se relaciona con unpolipéptido que codifica toda o una porcion sustancial de dicha enzima y un gen quimérico que dicho fragmento, ligado operativamente a secuencias reguladorasadecuadas, donde laexpresion del gen quimérico da como resultado la produccion de la proteína codificada en una célula huésped transformada, que también sedescribe. Una realizacion adicional de la presente invencion se refiere a un método para alterar el nivel de unadelta-5 ac il-CoA desaturasa o una acilograso-CoA elongasa en una célula huésped transformada, un método para obtener un fragmento de ácido nucleico que codifica toda o una porcion sustancial de unasecuencia de aminoácidos codificadora de unadelta-5 acil-CoA d esaturasa o una acilo graso-CoA elongasa y los productos que se obtienen,un método para producirun ácido graso desaturado que contenga un enlace doble en la posicion delta-5 en una célula huésped, y semillas, aceites y métodospara producir aceites d esemillas, donde dichas semillas y aceites contienen ácidos grasos desaturados que a su vez comprenden un enlace doble en la posicion delta-5. Otra realizacionadicional es un método para reducir el nivel de ácidos grasos de16 carbonos en una célula huésped y un método para incrementar el nivel de ácidos grasos de 20carbonos en una célula huésped, y semillas, aceites y métodos para producir aceites de semillas con niveles reducidos de ácidos grasos de 16 carbonos onivelesincrementados de ácidos grasos de 20 carbonos.
