UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. WATERS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH MATHY, OF HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS.
LO CK-HING-E Application filed September 28, 1906.
T 0 all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH A. VVATERs, of Washin ton, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Hinges; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of lock hinges particularly such as are used for shutters which will admit of the shutter be ing securely locked either when entirely closed, or at any angle or position which it may be desired to retain the same.
The objects I have in view are to simplify the construction of the locking devices and render the operation of the shutter more easy and efficient than is now exemplified in the prior art; and to provide means which will prevent the shutter being unseated or lifted from its hinges either by accident or evil deslgn.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of certain instrumentalities which will be now fully described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower part of blind and window casing showing the shutter or blind entirely closed. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view with the shutter artially open. Fig. 8 is a perspective view 0 the upper half of the bottom hinge. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower half of the lower hinge, showing its preferred form of construction. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch showing the pawl on its outer end and p operating handle on its inner end.
Referring to the drawings. A represents the casing of the window to which the lower member of the lower hinge a is secured, and A the shutter or blind carrying the upper member I) of the lower hinge.
As my invention resides in and has reference only to the lower hinge and its adjuncts, I will confine the description solely to those parts. On the arm 0 of the lower member of the hinge a is a circular plate (1 having a series of tangentially disposed recesses e, on its upper side or face, which are preferably about one-quarter of an inch in depth and are disposed tangentially of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2, 1908.
Serial No. 336,535.
hinge pintle P which rises centrally from the disk and is engaged by the eye E on the u per hinge member. These recesses shou d be disposed at such angles with relation to each other and with such special reference to the varying angles which the pawl will assume in the opening or closing of the shutter or blind, that the shutter may be locked at any predetermined or desired position. In the present instance I have provided six recesses on plated which will admit of the shutter being securely locked either when entirely closed; when open to its fullest extent, or at any convenient and desired intermediate angle.
In order to impart to both members of the lower hinge additional supporting capacity, I preferably cast them with right angle leaves or wings i, 'L.
it represents a rocking-shaft which extends through the shutter and is provided at its outer end with a locking dog 9 and at its inner end with operating handle k which latter enables it to be conveniently and quickly turned, and thus to easily throw the dog g in or out of engagement with any one of the recesses desired.
m represents a' metal plate or guard secured to the inner side of the shutter (after the same is mounted) in such position that it will travel just beneath the circular plate (1, thus affording a complete safeguard against the removal of the shutter either by casual or intended means.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a shutter hinge, the stationary part thereof having a circular disk on its arm around the hinge pivot; of a removable locking plate adapted to be secured to the shutter adjacent said disk, with its end projecting toward and adapted to travel beneath the circular disk and to prevent the shutter from being lifted off the hinge pivot, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
