LOCK- HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,361, dated July 4, 1882. Application filed April 28, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. BIXBY, of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Blind Hinge and Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in blind hinges and fasteners in which the hinge and fastener are combined; and the objects of my improvements are,'trst, to provide a supe rior blind-hinge; second, to provide an easy and secure fastening for the blind when it is shut; third, to secure and hold the blind in position when partially opened, as well as when fully opened.- I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation with parts broken away, showing two blinds in position at the window-casing, the left-hand blind closed and the right-hand blind opened. Fig. 2 is a plan View of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line x a', Fig. 2.

The part or plate marked A is the lower part, and is to be fastened to the window-casing. The upper part, which is marked B, is that which is to be securely fastened to the blind, and when in position at the window rests upon plate A and revolves upon the center-pin D ot' plate A, which passes through a hole in sald plate B near its center, and the plate B is held in position by the short pin E on plate A,

which pin passes through one of the holes K in plate B, and thereby secures the blind in position when it is open and fastens the blind when it is shut. The litter or plate O rests upon the center-pin D, and is bent so that it can be fastened or secured to the side of the blind by means ofthe thumb-screws F, which are to play loosely in the slides G of plate O. The blind is opened and closed by raising the same by means ot' the thumb-screws F till the plate B is sufficiently raised to Iallow it to revolve on center-pin D. This is easily accomplished by placing the thumb on the cap H on the top of the lifter or plate G, and the finger on thumb-screw F, and pressing them together. Any holt, screw, or fastening which will hold the plate C to the blind, and will play in the slots Gr and aft'orda good hold by which to raise the blind, will take the place of a thumb screw.

The functions of plate C are to assist in unlocking the hinge when the blind is to be opened or closed. The lower portion or elbow thereof, which bends round the edge of the blind, rests upon the pintle D, and is secured in that position by a shallow socket in the bottom ot' the plate at the end ot' the elbow and by thumb-screw F, which is screwed into the blind and plays loosely in the slot G of said plate. `Thelower thumb-screw F,.as shown in the drawings, is only to assist in holding the plate in position, and any screw which will allow the blind to rise and not bind can be used in that position. The blind is raised by the upper thumb-screw F, and the plate O is held in its position by placing thc thumb upon the top or the plate on the cap H, which is a part ofthe plate, and pressing down thereon when pressing np on thumb-screw F. When operated in this manner plate O allows the blind to rise just sut'cient to unlock the hinge and allow the blind to swing, and it prevents plate B from being raised. oft' from the pintle D, and thereby causing the blind to be thrown from the hinge, as it wouldv be liable to be if the blind were carelessly raised in any other man` ner.

The foregoing is the description of the lower hinge, and the upper hinge to be usedtherewith is similar thereto, except that the lifter or plate O is not required, and only plates A and B are used, and any hinge which admits of raising the blind sufficiently' to allow plate B to clear pin'E can be used for an upper hinge.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

In combination with a blind having a plate, B, provided with a series of holes, K, and a pintle-socket and a plate, C, attached to the blind by slots G and thumb-screws F, whereby the unshipping of the hinge isprevented, the piate A, secured tothe casing and having a center-pin, D, and short piu E, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
