To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. HAMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Hinges, of which the following 1s a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in reversible lock-hinges, and may be applied to either doors or blinds; and its object 1s to construct a hinge so that it may be cast with all parts complete at one operation, thereby cheapening their production or manufacture and also to save expense of buying new hinges by reversing one of the parts when the locking device is broken.

The various features of the invention will be hereinafter more fully explained and described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the hinge ar ranged for a right-hand shutter, the leaves thrown open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the hinge with the leaves closed, as when the blind is open and locked in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the two parts of the hinge separated, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the leaf 2 reversed and of a leaf for a left-hand shutter.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a leaf of the hinge ada ted to be secured to a right-hand blind or s utter, and 2 represents the reversible leaf of the hinge ada ted to be secured to the window-frame. T e leaf 1 for a left hand blind or shutter is shown in Fig. 4.. The leaf 1 for a right-hand shutter is provided with an arm 3, made integral therewith, which projects at right angles from the face thereof and slightly beyond the right side or inner edge 4. Said arm 3 has a downwardly-projectin pintle 5, made integral with or separate from said arm 3, and on the end of the pintle 5 is a key 6. At the upper edge of the leaf 1 and near its left or outer edge is a catch '7,pr0jecti11g at right angles from the same side or face of the leaf 1 as the bearing-arm 3 and adapted to engage a catch The leaf 1 for theleft-hand shutter is similar to the leaf 1, except that the catch 7 is near the right-hand edge of the leaf and the bearing 3 and pintle 5 are at the left-hand edge of the leaf.

Projecting from leaf 2 at right angles to the face of the same and slightly beyond the lefthand or inner edge 8 of the leaf in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is an arm 9, having an eye 10 and keyway 11 in said eye. The eye 10 forms a bearing in which the pintle 5 works. Projecting at right angles from the same side or face of the leaf 2, and near its outer edge are two catches 12 and 13, the former being arranged above the bearing and having its catching edge turned u ward and the latter being arranged belowt e bearing and having its catching edge turned downward. When the leaf 2 is reversed, as shown in Fig. 4, the catch 13 is turned upward and catch 12 downward.

By this arrangement of locking devices it will be readily seen that if the catch 12 for engaging with the catch 7 of the leaf 1, for instance, is broken off the leaf 2 may be removed, reversed, and placed on the opposite side of the window-frame, and the catch 13 can be used in connection with the leaf 1 for a left-hand shutter. In this latter position the eye in the leaf 2 is engaged by the pintle on the leaf 1*, as will be evident.

When the hinge is in position, as shown in Fig. 1, the key bearing against the bottom of the arm 9 prevents any accidental dislodgment of the leaves when the hinge is opened or closed.

In a hinge a reversible leaf having a pair of oppositely-disposed catches projecting from one side or face thereof, near its outer edge and a bearing projecting from the same side of the leaf near its inner edge midway between said catches, in combination with a complementary leaf having a art near its inner edge ada ted to engage said bearing and having a \catc near its outer edge adapted to engage one of the catches on said reversible leaf.
