HINGE To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHAnLEs Louis 5 BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, re-

siding at Charlottesville, in the county of Alltemarle and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to hinges for shutters, gates, and the like and has for its object to so construct the same, that it will lock the shutter or other closure eitherin its open or closed position, and furthermore is capable of use with a shutter opening or closing either to the right or left.

In the drawings forming apart of this specification, and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts in the several views ligure 1 is a side view, showing the hinge open; 2 a pore ective view of one of the leaves, showing the ocking projections on the same; and 3 a transverse section, on line 3 3, of fig. 1..

1 and 2 represent the leaves of the hinge; 3 knuckles or ears on leaf 1; and 4 knuckles on leaf 2. Upon the knuckles of leaf 2 are shown lugs or canrsurfaces 5, the same pref erahly formed integral withthe knuckles 4, and adapted to ride upon the knuckles'S and raise the shutters during the operation of opening or closing the same. .The knuckles 3 are of such reduced diameter at their sides 8, 8, as to permit said lugs 5 to overlap the same both in the closed and open position of the shutter or gate. That is, the sides of Specification of Letters Patent.

lugs 3 are reduced only where the cams 5 rest at the limit of their movement, so as to lock the shutter in the two positions.

6 is the belt or pintle connecting the leaves, said pintle being adapted to be withdrawn and the hinge inverted and pintle inserted in same, when it is to be used with shutter opening in opposite direction.

1 The knuckle 7 is put on leaf 1 of hinge simply to add strength to hinge, the hin e operating well without it. Of course ony one cam-surface is in use at a time, and the object of having two is for the purpose of operating it for a right or left-hand shutter.

T he operation is so apparent from the foregoing description that it is not thought necessary to recapitulate.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

In a reversible hinge, a leaf having knuckles furnished with cams on the periphery thereof, in combination with. a leaf formed with knuckles having reduced sides down which the cams are adapted to slide and interlock in predetermined positions, the spaces between the said knuckles heing of such a diameter as to permit the rise and fall of the cam-k11uckles in operation.
