UNITED STATES PATENT UFEICE.
BENJAMIN FRY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,177, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed Novemberll, 1886. Serial No. ilfLllT.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, haveinven ted certain new and useful Improvements in CombinationLocks, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to combination-locks; and it consists in the improvementshereinafter set forth and explained.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the inside of the lock. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line m min Fig. 1, and also showing a section of a catch. Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of the outside of the lock, also showing a modification of the bolt mechanism of the lock. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same on the line y 11 in Fig. 3, and also showing a section of a catch.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A is the plate or frame of the lock; 13 B, dials provided with knobs C G and also with spindles which pass through the plate A to apoint where they are adjustably secured to the serrated and slotted locking disks D D by means of the screws 0 0, these parts being common in locks of this character. The back side of the plate A, I preferably cast with sleeves or projections E, through which the spindles connecting the dials B B and the locking-disks D D pass, by means whereof the locking-disks D D are retained some distance from the back of the plate A, leaving room between the plate A and the disks D for the operation of a spring-dog and locking-bolt mechanism. Near the front edge and on the inside face of the plate A, centrally between the locking-disks D D, I preferably cast lugs F F, which operate as guides for a bolt, G, to slide in, and on the opposite edge of the plate A, I cast a lug, a, to which the dogspring K. is secured.
(No model.)
The bolt G is provided at its outer end with a frietionroller, II, which roller, by the outward movement of the bolt G, engages, when the door or drawer to which the lock is secured is closed, with a ledge or catch, I, on the door or drawer frame. The inner end of the bolt G is beveled off at 1, so as to form a wedge when it comes in contact with the end of the spring K, to which the dog J is secured, so that when the bolt G is pressed back it tends to raise the end of the Spring and the dog J, attached thereto. The bolt G is also provided with a stop, 0, which comes into contact with the lugs F F, and thereby limits the outward movement of the bolt.
The spring K, I preferably secure to thelug a, on the plate A, at such an angle that the pressure of the end thereof to which the dog J is attached is downward on the beveled or wedge-shaped end 9 of the bolt G, which tends to force the bolt G outward and retain it in that position. The dog J is secured to the inner end of the spring K, so that the raising of the end of the spring K by any backward movement of the bolt G tends to raiseit against the under sides of the locking-disks D D, thus preventing the bolt G from being moved back until the lockingdisks D D are moved around, so that the dog J will pass into the slots d d therein. To prevent the discovery of the combination upon which the lock is set, by carefully moving the disks D D around to detect the location of the slots (1 d, I make a slight p rojeetiou,j,on the central portion of the upper edge of the dog J, which projection engages with the cogs on the edges of the disks D D before the remainder of the dog J reaches the slots 12 (I, so as to completely defeat any effort of this kind.
It is obvious that when the locking-disksD D are adjusted so that the dog J will pass into the slots (1 d a slight pull on one of the knobs G will cause the roller H to pass the catch I, so that the door or drawer can be opened, and, as the spring K acts automatically on the bolt G, this lock will operate not only as a look but as a spring-catch for the door or drawer on which it is used, and can be opened and closed at pleasure without locking it; or it can be locked, as desired.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modifiezv I the lock is constructed and operates as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention,
so as to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
l. The combination, in a combination-lock, of the dials B B and the slotted locking-disks D D, secured thereto, with the spring K, having the dog J thereon, and the bolt G, having a beveled inner end adapted to engage the 20 spring K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a combination-lock, of the dials B B and the serrated and slotted locking-disks D D,adj ustably secured thereto, with the spring K, having the dog J, provided with the projection j thereon, and the bolt G, provided with the friction-roller H and stop e, and haxdng the beveled inner end adapted to engage the spring K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN v FRY.
