BENJAMIN K. DORWART, OF LAN GASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.'
Leners patent N0. 62,617, ma Mai-@1L .5, ist?.
IMrnevnD sHUrrnn-Botr.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON GERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN K. DoRwAnT, of the city of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Self-Fastening Shutter-Bolt; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact vdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of both portions of the bolt locked together.
Figure 2 shows the parts detached.
Figure shows the top of the plates and bolts', with the bevelled or curvilinear faces B B' ofthe projecting notched catch-plates, or terminal conic flanges on the plates A A', so as to be adapted to the radius of the shutters moving on their hinges. l
Figure 4 shows the plates A A' and theirv parts attached to their respective shutters S S', in the act of. being closed.
' Figure 5 shows a modification of theparallel spring-bolts D D', prossediapart by' a central, double-winged, and curved lever, with a socket for a key or turning handle. Said united boltsare heldbya central rivet on their spring ends. i V i The object of this invention is to secure shutters firmly from the outside by simply pushing them into place. The long bolts in *common use are frequently bent and troublesome to bolt. 'Bottom bolts are objectionable for various reasons. This bolt, it is confidently believed, when introduced to the trade as a new article of manu facture, will meet -with 'general favorfbeing admirably adapted for the purpose, simple, neat, and strong, and can be furnished at prices as low as ordinary bolts, and made ornamental und strong', to suit the fancy as well as the securityv of stores and dwellings. A v
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, a simple' inspection of' the drawings would suiiice. I
I will brielly state that the plate A, with its-bevelled or slightly-curved raised face B, may be strengthened by a back-brace, C. lThis conical flange B has a notch, b, on each side for the reception ofthe boltsDD', and is firmly fastened to one of the wings or shuttedinl The other plate A' is similar having a braced conical flange, CVD', to match. This plate has a bolt, D, above, and a similarA bolt, D', below, in a reversed position, hel/.l by
a central pivot, d, and resting in thc not-chte' of the conical flange B', extending over into the notch I), in theVV other flange B, on the plate A. Said bolts D D' are terminated by a hook, F, which looks the several flanges D B' iirmly together, uniting thc plates attached to the separate shutters. The ends of the bolts` may be curved, and
will form handlesffor opening the bolts. here is also a spiral spring, E. sho\vn,.and asuppert-ing ledge to'.
confine the spring. It will be seen (6g. fl) that when the one shutter S', with its portion of the bolt A' B' C', is in place, the other wing or portion S being pushed in from the outside, er drawn in by an ordinary ring on the inside, the 'conic flange B will enter between the bolts and terminal lrooks F, :md wedge the bolts apart, until they both fall into their respective notches b by the actionofthe spring E, and thusirmlylock both parts together. In order to open the same, it is only necessary'to press the leve: ends Ael' the bolts D D' (heid on their strong pivots d) together, which raises the hoolrs or bolts out of 'the notches b ii the plate A, andthev shutters are readily thrown open. '.lhe operation is as simple as it is satisfactory. As intimated, one et' the flanged faces B must incline, or be slightly concave, and the other face B of a convexity to match and adapt thc'm te the radius of a semicircle traversed by the shutter, from' the hinge to the inner'or joining edges of the same, irl-closing. I am aware that spring locks with hooked bolts, separated by a conical catcl1,'with a notch on each side, entering vertically between the rounded hook ends of the bolts, such as chest locks, are in usc. Such I do not claim. But I am not aware that shutter-bolts were ever constructed or used in the manner specified, entering on the sides, or behind the hooks on the bolts, as shown. These bolts may be made straight, without the hooks F, and will answer equally well in holding the parts together.-
What I claim as my invention, as a new articlefot' manufacture, is
A shutter-bolt, when composed of two twin plates A A', each provided with a raised conic Harige B, notched at base for the reception of the horizontal bolts D D', in the manner and for the purpose speeied.
