followin g specific UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. GOODWIN, OF NEVINSVILLE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT m WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,735, dated March 27, 1877; application filed December 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. G001)- WIN, of Nevinsville, in the county of Adams and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, which improveme: isfully set forth in the on, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is-a longitudinal section. Figs. 2 and 3 are details.
The object of my invention is to rapidly separate the dirt from clothes, by the combination, in a washing-machine, of an eightsquare box, A, and revolving platform B, with a rim, B, inside of box A, and the beaters G O, and crank-shaft D, and lifters E E, and pulleys F F, and drive-wheel G, and pins H. The platform Bis carried around and sup ported by a shaft, *1, standing upright in the center of platform B, and runs up through the cover J, and is supported by a cross-piece, R,
' fastened to the under side of the cover, and
has a drive-wheel, G, and pins H on top, which is moved around by a flat pin, S, or its equivalent, in crank-shaft D. Tliere are four lifters, E E, on shaft D, with pulleys F F, that raise the heaters O C, by catching under the Hat pins N N on beater-staff G G, and raises them up against the springs M, which sends the boaters O 0 down with force. The platform B and rim B have holes, to let the dirt settle from the water. The frame is attached to cover J. The shaft D runs from post W to post W. The cover J is fastened to the box A. A part is attached by hinges Y, and
turns back and lifts the beaters O C out of the way.
My object in having the box stationary is in order that the dirt can settle through the holes in the platform B.
My object in the adjustable heaters is in order that they may suit the shape of the clothes, as represented in Fig. 2.
My object in the lifters E E and pulleys F F is to raise the heaters O 0 higher and easier.
I claim as my invention The tub A, plat-form B B, and shaft I G, in combination with the heaters O G and shaft D, having lifters E N and pulleys F, as and for the purpose specified.
WM. W. GOODWIN.
