R. BROOKES.
Improvement in Washing-Machines.
N0. 128,529, PatentedJuly2,I872.
W'tmsses: I gnve'nl'oyz 5 UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES. I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,529, dated July 2, 1872.
view of the upright B; and Fig. IV is a perspective view of the upright B.
This invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and consists in the combination of the several parts hereinafter described. V
In the drawing, A is a wash-tub, provided with two uprights, B and B, secured therein by screws or otherwise, so as to be removable. 0 is a corrugated cylinder supported upon a shaft, D, journaled at E and E in the up-' rights B B, the'bearing G at E being hinged and so placed in relation to an inclined slot, F, in the upright B, that one end of the shaft D can be let into the slot F and the hinged bearing G closed upon it, and securely kept in place by a button, H. The curved washboard I has rollers K journaled to side bars L, which are united and strengthened by slats M. One end of the curved wash-board I is hooked to staples N, on the inside of the tub A. Rubber bands 0, secured to the side bars L, connect the other end of the wash-board with arms 1?, having hooks Q Q. The arms P are securely fastened to a cross-bar, R, which is loosely tenoned to the tops of the uprights B B, and held in place by hooks S S.
The rubber bands 0 are used as a means of accommodating the wash-board to the bulk of the clothes between it andthe corrugated cylinder G. The shaft D is provided with a crank, T, for operating the machine.
To remove the whole of the internal mechanism from the tub .A displace the rubber bands 0, unhook the hooks S S, and remove the cross-bar R; turn the button H from the hinged bearing G, and open the bearing G; withdraw the shaft D from the bearing E, raise the shaft D out of the inclined slot F,
and lift the cylinder 0 from the tub A; unhook the wash-board from the staples N and lift it from the tub A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination, a wash-tub, A, rigidly attached uprights B and B, the latter having the inclined slot F extending through tub, and the hinged bearing G, corrugated cylinder 0, curved wash-board I K M, rubber bands 0, and cross-bar R provided with hooked arms I: and hooks S S, all constructed and operating as hereinbefore set forth, for the purpose I In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in washing-machines as above described I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of May, 1872.
RICHARD BROOKES.
