WASHING-MACHINE OPERATING MECHANISM.
Application filed August 4, 1915.
The object of my invention is to provide awashing machine operating mechanism of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
A further object is to provide such a device in which all of the operating mechanism is mounted on the movable cover portion of the washing machine.
A further object is to provide such a device so arranged that the mechanism is mounted on the hinged cover of a washing machine in such a manner that the weight is evenly balanced for making it comparatively easy to raise or lower the cover.
Still a further obj eot is to provide such a device in which part of the heavy mechanism is located in line with the hinged points of the movable cover in such a manner that said portion of the mechanism need not be lifted by the raising of the cover.
A further object is to provide such a washing machine operating mechanism mounted on a tub having a hinged cover, in such a manner that the fly wheel and all parts of the gearing mechanism are mounted on a single bracket or support secured to the movable cover.
Still a further object is to provide simple, durable and inexpensive means for connecting the clothes agitator mounted in a washing machine tub with the gearing mechanism and the fly wheel or operating pulley.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally the tub of a washing machine mounted on the supporting legs 11. The
tub 10 is provided with a fixed cover member 13, to which is hinged the movable cover member l i, by means of hinges l2. lock devices 15 and 16 may be used ing the cover in its closed position.
Mounted on the top of the cover member 1% is a gearing supporting bracket 19, preferably comprising a single casting extending from the center of the cover 14 to one side thereof and having near said side a substantially right angled horizontal extension 17. Near one end of the extension 17 is a downward extension 18.
Suitably mounted in the inner portion of the member 19 is a vertical agitator shaft 29, on the upper end of which is a gear 30 in Coacting for lockinesh with the curved rack bar 32 on an arm 33, which is pivotally mounted by means of a belt or shaft 34. on the member 19 at a point between the ends of the arm 33. The end of said arm farthest removed from the curved rack bar 32 is hollow, and slidably end of which is the ball 36,
,On the extension 18 is a downward extension 22 approximately below the outer end of the member 19. Pivotally mounted on the extension 22 is a bracket 37, the upper portion of which is hollow to receive the ball 36 and is provided with a slot 23, to permit play of the rod 35. The bracket 37 has an arm 38 provided with two sockets 38 and t0 to selectively receive the end of a. handle 50. The bracket 37 has a downwardly extending arm 51 to which is pivoted a pitman 52 extending toward the gear 28, suitably mounted on the extension 18, the pitman being pivoted to a wrist-pin 53 ecentrically mounted on said gear. Mounted on the extension 18 is a fly wheel or pulley 26 on a shaft 5% having suitable bearings. On the shaft 5% is a small gear 55 in mesh with the gear 28. The gears 28 and are protected by a suitable casing 56.
It will be understood that any suitable as a dolly 58 may be secured to the shaft 29.
In the practical use of my improved washing machine and operating mechanism there for, it will be noted that the entire operating mechanism is really mounted on the hinged cover member. The gear 28 is preferably arranged below and on the opposite side of the line through the hinge points from the part 19 and the bracket 88, to counterbalance the bracket 38 and the parts connected therewith. The heavy fly wheel 26 is arranged substantially in line with the hinge points, so that when the lid is raised the operator need not move the weight of the fly wheel. By mounting the handle and parts immediately connected therewith at the side of the hinged cover member, and n'iounting the gear 28 rearwardl'y of the hinge points, it will be seen that the weight of the operating mechanism may be so distributed as to largely reduce the weight which the operator must raise when the lid is lifted, and to impose a minimum strain on the hinges. My machine has the advantages set forth in the above description, including the feature of the balanced parts and arrangement of the heavy fly wheel in such position that its weight will not ordinarily be imposed on the washing machine operator when the lid or cover is being raised or lowered.
In this connection attention is called to the simplicity and effectiveness of the means for operatively connecting the handle 50 with the dolly for actuating the dolly. Only two bracket castings are necessary for mounting the entire mechanism on the machine.
It will be understood that some changes may be made in the arrangement and construction of the parts of my improved device, without departing from its essential features and purposes, and it is my intent to cover by this application any such changes which may be included within the scope of my claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of: the class described, the combination of a support, a member hingedly mounted thereon, an upright shaft rota tably mounted in said movable member, an arm pivotally mounted between its ends on said movable member, a curved rack bar on one end of said arm, a gear on said shaft in mesh with said rack bar, a lever pivoted at one side of said movable member operatively connected with said arm for reciprocating it when the lever is moved for imparting alternating rotary motion to said shaft, a gear member supported on said movable member at one side of said support in line with the hinged points of the movable member, and means whereby motion may be transmitted from said lever to said gearing member, or from said gearing member to said lever.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support, a member hingedly mounted thereon, an upright shaft rotatably mounted in said movable member, an arm pivotally mounted between its ends on said movable member, coacting gearing devices on said arm and said shaft, a lever pivoted at one side of said movable member operatively connected with said arm for reciprocating it when the lever is moved, for imparting alternating rotary motion to said shaft, a gear member supported on said movable member at one side of said support in line with the hinged points of the movable member, means for operating said gearing member, and means whereby motion may be transmitted from' said lever to said gearing member, or from said gearing member to said lever, said means comprising a gear operatively connected with both of said other gears and with said arm.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a support, a member hingedly mounted thereon, an upright shaft rotatably mounted in said movable member, an arm pivotally mounted on said movable member between the ends of said arm, coacting gearing devices on said arm and said shaft, a lever pivoted at one side of said movable member, means for operatively connecting said lever with said arm, said means comprising a socket rigidly connected with said lever, a rod slidably mounted in said arm having oneend slidably mounted on said socket, and means for connecting said lever and said rod for sliding and universal movement. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support, a member hingedly mounted thereon, an upright shaft rotatably mounted in said movable member, an arm pivotally mounted between its ends on said movable member, a curved rack bar on one end of said arm, a gear on said shaft in mesh with said rack bar, a lever pivoted at one side of saidmovable member operatively connected with said arm for reciprocating it when the lever'is moved for imparting alternating rotary motion to said shaft, a gear member supported on said movable member at one side of said support in line with the hinged points of the movable members, means for operating said gearing member, and means whereby motion may be transmitted from said lever to said gearing member, or from said gearing member to said lever, said means comprising a shaft, a gear thereon operatively connected with said gearing member, a pitman pivoted to said lever and pivotally connected oft center to said gear, said gear being mounted on the opposite side of the hinged points from said arm, and being supported on said movable member.
5. In a device of the class described, a support, a movable member pivoted thereon, a bracket on said movable member extending from the central portion thereof outwardly to the edge thereof, a right angled extension on said bracket near the edge of said pivoted member, a downward extension formed on said bracket, a second downward extension formed on said first extension, a bracket pivoted to said first described downward extension, an arm pivoted between its ends on said first described bracket, a shaft rotatably mounted in said pivotal member, coacting gearing-devices on said arm and said shaft, a rod slidably mounted on said arm, a ball on theend of said rod, a socket on said second bracket for receiving said ball and for permitting, sliding movement of said rod with relation to the socket, a handle on said second bracket, a gearing device mounted on one of the extensions on said first bracket substantially in line with the pivotal point of said gearing member, gearing devices mounted on one of the extensions of said first bracket on the side of said pivotal point farther away from the first and second brackets are mounted, and means for operatively connecting said gearing devices with each other and with said second bracket.
