U NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
WILLIAM BYMASTER, OEJ'AMESTOWN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 177,687, dated May 23, 1876; application filed March 21', 1876.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BYMASTER, of Jamestown, in the county ofBoone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Washers, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved Fig. 2 is a detail face view of the stationary rubber. Fig. 3 is a detail face view of the movable rubber. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved machine for washing clothes, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, easily operated, and effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoroughly,
. whether the articlesbe large .or small, coarse or tine.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in, the claim.
A represents an ordinary washetub, which is set upon a bench or platform, B, where it is kept in place by pins or cleats attached to said platform. The platform B is supported upon legs 0 of such a length as to raise the machine to a convenient height. To the opposite sides of the platform B are attached the lower ends of two posts, D, the upper ends of which project a little above the upper edge of the tub A. To the upper end of one of the posts D is pivoted one edge of the cover E, the opposite edge of which is secured to the upper end of the other post D by a hook, F, or other convenient fastening. In the bottom of the tub A is secured a board, G, to the face of which is attached a series of radial cleats, g, which forms the stationary rubber. H is the movable rubber, which is a board, to the face of which is attached a series of radial cleats, h". To the center of the movable rubber H h is attached the lower end of a shaft,I, which passes up through the center of the cover E and through a yoke, J, attached to said cover, and to its upper end is attached a cross-bar or round, K.
In using the machine the clothes to be washed areplaced upon the stationary rubber G g, and a sufficient quantity of soap and water are put in. Themovable rubber H h is lowered upon the clothes, and the cover E is secured in place. The operator then grasps the cross-bar Kin his hands, and turns the rubber H 71/ back, and forth, which washes the clothes very quickly and thoroughly.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The close cover E, pivoted to an end of one and fastening over an end of another post, D, in combination with a tub and rubber shaft, as shown and described.
WILLIAM BYMASTER.
