Description
GEORGE BENJAMIN,
OF AVOCA,
NEWv YORK.
DEVICEv FOR HOLDING BITS IN BRACES.
. Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,479, dated June 9, 1857.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE BENJAMIN, of Avoca, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new Bit-Fas tener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the brace or bit stock with a convenient and substantial fastening to hold the bit irmly to the bit stock in a manner to be ot' the most practical utility.
No. l represents the brace, No. 2 the bit, o. 3, the hook and lever, No. 4 the standard and Jfulcrum, No. 5 the fulcrum screw or pivot that holds the hook and lever to the standard that passes through the brace socket, No. 6 the spring that holds the hook Firm to the notch in the shank of the bit, No. 7 the bur that holds the standard to the socket, No. 8 notch in the bit.
I will proceed to describe its construction and operation: I construct my hook and lever as shown in Figure 3 by locating it on the outside of the brace in a manner not to prevent the use of the brace in any form or place that any now constructed can be used, making it more convenient fitting the bit to the socket of the brace, by having the hook on the outside and the notch in the bit in plain open sight and no inconvenience in ascertaining the place to make the notch in the bit to receive the hook, the standard and fulcrum possessing all the strength and durability necessary to overcome any amount of force necessary to draw the bit that could be applied without breaking the shank of the bit, also the ease and convenience of removing t-he bit from the brace by means of a slight pressure of the thumb or finger on the end of the lever (No. 3)
which raises the hook fromV the notch in the bit thereby leaving no obstruction to removlng the bit as occasion may require,
the standard and fulcrum being constructed in a manner to be applied to any brace now in use with little or no inconvenience except to drill a hole through the socket of the brace and insert the shank of the standard and the only means necessary to secure the same and make it permanent and durable is by the bur or nut on the shank of the stand ard on theV opposite side of the brace socket from the hook and lever thereby combining simplicity, cheapness, and durability. The fulcrum screw No, 5 that passes through the standard and lever also combines strength and durability, the spring No. 6 that holds the hook in the notch of the bit being placed on the outside of the brace with room to construct the same with any amount of strength and durability required and the location being such as to render any defect Visible and the ease with which the same can be removed and its place supplied with a new one if its material or construction should prove defective.
The hook and lever is made of cast steel, the standard and vfulcrum of steel or iron, the spring of steel, the fulcrum screw and standard bur of steel or iron.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The invention of the hook and lever and standard as shown in the drawing Nos. 3 and 4 as applied to the brace socket, and the application of the spring No. 6 the bur No. 7 and the notch No. 8 on the outside of the brace socket as represented in the drawing and specification herein described.
' GEORGE BENJAMIN. Witnesses:
HENRY GOEE, JOHN D. GRIsWoLD.
