Description

'NTTED STATES PATENT oTErcE.
JOHN L. HARVEY AND C. A. MILLS, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
PAPER-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,232, dated July 1, 1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOHN L. HARVEY and O. A. MILLS, of the city and county of Dubuque, State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Clip; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
The nature of our invention is that we have attached the clip and spring which closes the clip to an outer cylinder which works over an inner cylinder by means of a screw thus enabling the clip to be raised or lowered so as to accommodate a larger or smaller quantity of paper.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a top view. A represents the clip; b, the screw passing through the clip for the purpose of raising and lowering it; 0l, the board on which the paper rests; la, the thumb piece for working the spring.
Fig. 2 is a side view.
E is a hinge by which the clip is attached to the outer cylinder; C, the spring attached to the outer cylinder which shuts the clip.
Fig. 3 is a vertical Section showing wherein our clip diers from all other clips now in use.
We construct a cylinder, at theJ upper end ofwhich we place the nut i through which the extension screw Z) works, the bottom of the cylinder being attached to the board in any convenient way.
f is the outer cylinder which is made to slide over the inner cylinder by means of the screw b, thus enabling the clip to be raised or lowered to accommodate a larger or smaller quantity of paper. i
J is the collar by which the screw is attached to the outer cylinder holding it rmly in its place.
L is a pin attached to the inner cylinder and working in a Slot M, M, M, in the outer cylinder to prevent the outer cylinder from turning.
What we claim as our invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent is- The attachment of the clip and spring to the outer cylinder by which the clip can be raised or lowered so as to accommodate a larger or smaller quantity of paper the effect of the spring upon the clip being the same in any position.
JOHN L. HARVEY. C. A. MILLS.
