Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND KEEHNOLD, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,243, dated February 12, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND KEEH- NOLD, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction and Manufacturing of Adjustable TWrenches for Machinery and Oarriages and other Purposes; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention diers in shape and construction from all other wrenches in use. It can be cast, or forged, of any metallic substance, with less labor and expense, than other adjustable wrenches.
To enable others skilled in the art to use and manufacture my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the wrench in three parts. A represents the handle, on one end of which is the jaw, B, and the crop bar, O, which forms the gage for the jaw D and which is iitted on to C, in order to be moved through the eccentric E. The grooves in O, and E, serve to keep it from slipping and by the help of the pin, F, which connects the jaw, D, with the eccentric, E, to eXert all the strength necessary to operate the same. The small nut, G, which is screwed on the end of the gage bar, O, will prevent the wrench from coming apart, making it a complete Xture, by one side of the handle, H, being secured to the sliding jaw, D, by the joint pin, F, causing the opening of the mouth which is in front, and contrary, as constructed in other wrenches usually used, making it more handy in its application to general use, and being so plainly constructed it can be made much cheaper than the adjusting Wrenches now in use, and may be made of diiferent sizes as want may dictate.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure `by Letters Patent is- The jaw D and lever I-I as constructed operating in connection with the ratchet bar O in the manner set forth.
FERDINAND KEEHNOLD.
