Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. J. LAMSON, OF CHERRY VALLEY, MASSACHUSETTS.
BELT-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,206, dated September 15, 1857.
To all whom "it may concern: Be it known that I, D. A. J. LAMsoN, o Cherry Valley, in the county of Leicester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combination-Tool for Mecha-nies and Others; and I do hereby declare thatA the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a face view of the tool as in condition for being used as a punch or wrench. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the tool as in condition to be used as a screw driver.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of the several tools herein specified, in one instrument, when constructed and operating as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, A, represent two levers pivoted together at B.
On one of the short ends or nipper jaws C, of these levers a hollow punch E, is formed, and on the other end or nipper jaws C, a socket E', is provided to receive the punch, and thus allow of the jaws coming close together when the tool is not in use, or when it is desired to bring the jaws together, and make the tool serve the office of nippers; which office is served by the portion b, b, of the short ends or jaws.
D, D, are V-shaped notches cut on the inner edge of the short ends or jaws, between the pivot B, and the punch E, and socket E. These notches when brought together, by the closing of the jaws, form a square or four sided wrench.
On the inner edge of each of the long ends A, A, of the levers A, A, a V-shaped notch L, is cut, these notches when brought together form a square or four sided wrench.
Beyond these notches in the inner edge of each of the long ends A', A, a chamber or oblong recess K, is made. At the back of these chambers or recesses K, K, a thin elliptic spring z', is arranged.
G, H, represent two implements fitted in these chambers or recesses; G, being a screw driver, and I-I, an awl. The screw driver and awl have each a shoulder J, formed on it and are pivoted at c, c, to the extremity of the long ends A', A, of the levers.
By examining the drawing Fig. 1, it will be seen that the chambers or recesses K, K, are of corresponding form with the tools and thus receive the shoulders J, J, snugly. It will also be seen by examining Fig. 2, that when the screw driver is thrown out, the shoulder of 1the same rests upon the shoulder of the awl, and vice versa when the awl is thrown out, and thus a firm stop or support is secured to the screw driver or awl, and all chance of the same closing into its socket while in use prevented.
This combination tool meets the wants of the factory, machine shop, store, hotel, oiiice and the household, and will be a great convenience to mechanicians who travel from city to city repairing clocks and doing light job work.
I-Iaving thus described my invention I will now state that I do not claim broadly the combination of a number of implements together so as to form a complex or universal tool, irrespective of the construction and arrangement of the parts forming such a tool, but
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the several tools herein specified in one instrument, when constructed and operating substantially as herein described.
