PIPE-TONGS.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 22,157, dated November 80, 1858.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. BeowN, ot' Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a side view of a pair of my improved pipe tongs.
F ig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, it being taken in the line of the axis of the adjusting screw. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the fulcrum pin and at right angles with the axis o the adjusting screw.
The nature of my improvement is to be found in the arrangement and application ot an adjusting screw with reference to the tulcrum pin, the slot, and the hooked jaw lever or its holding arm.
Tn the drawings, A, is the hooked jaw lever while B, is the toothed lever, they be ing crossed on one another and connected together by a tulcrum pin C, which passes through both and particularly through a slot, a, formed in the jaw lever. That part of the pin which is within the slot is made square or rectangular to fit the slot, and has a hole, Z), bored through it transversely for the reception of a ournal, c, projecting from the end of a male screw, D. The said journal passes through the fulcrum pin and is held therein by a washer' and pin as shown at, d, in Fig. 2. The screw D, is arranged in line with the slot and screws in and through the lever, A, and enters the slot in manner as shown in the drawings. By rotating the screw on its axis the hooked jaw may be made either to approach toward or recede from the tooth, f', as circumstances may require in order to adjust the same to a pipe.
The fulcrum pin, C, extends through the lever, B, and is confined in place by means of a screw nut, g, which is placed on a screw, 72, formed on the pin C. Thus the above described arrangement and application of the adjusting screw to the t'nlcrum pin, the slot and the levers ot the pipe tongs is one which though simple is ot' great advantage thereto, as must be admitted by all who may have occasion to make use ot pipe tongs.
l do not claim making one jaw ot a. pair ot pipe tongs adjustable in distance from or with respect to the other by means of a. screw, but,
