Abstract

発明の背景
歴史的に見て、テレビ視聴者は、テレビのチューニングを支配しており、その結果、視聴者のテレビ受像機の画面（モニタ）およびスピーカに与えられるテレビジョン信号の映像表示および音声を支配してきた。初期のテレビ受像機は手動でチューニング可能であったが、その後テレビ視聴者は赤外線遠隔制御装置を使ってテレビジョンのチューニング先のチャンネルを変えるようになった。

本発明は、テレビ視聴者がチャンネルを変えることなく視聴者が観ているものを変える機能を提供する。本発明の１つの応用は、視聴者のテレビ画面に表示されて視聴者が見る広告の変更である。
この応用が有益となる状況は、テレビ・ネットワークが広告のターゲットを定めたい場合である。たとえば、あるネットワーク、たとえばスーパーボールなどの大イベントを全国に生放送するＦＯＸについて考えてみる。これまで、広告主はスーパーボール放送区域におけるコマーシャル・ブレーク中のある時点で放送される広告のために莫大な金額を支払ってきた。ネットワークは、これまで、１回のコマーシャル・ブレーク中に次々に通常１５秒から６０秒の持続時間で広告をいくつか放送してきた。これまでネットワークが使っていた連続的な広告モデルと異なり、本発明は、広告のマルチキャスティング（多重放送）を可能にする。
つまり、本発明は、ネットワークが複数の広告チャンネル、たとえばＦＯＸ、ＦＯＸ１、ＦＯＸ２などを構成できるようにするシステムおよび方法を提供する。各チャンネルは、主チャンネル、たとえばＦＯＸにおいて放送される広告と時間的に一致するように同期化された別個の広告プログラムを提供することができる。本発明を使用すれば、視聴者が意識しないように、ＦＯＸでスーパーボールを観ている個々の視聴者のテレビ受像機が、コマーシャル・ブレーク中自動的に複数のＦＯＸチャンネルの１つにチューニングされる。１つの実施態様においては、テレビ受像機は自動的に連続的に複数のＦＯＸチャンネルの１つまたはそれ以上にチューニングする。
特定の視聴者のテレビがチューニングされるチャンネルを選択するための基準として、個々の視聴者のプロフィルを考慮することもできるし、ネットワークが定める他の基準を基にすることもできる。この種の選択を行うために使用できる基準については本出願において後に説明する。
本発明は、特定の選択基準に限定されない。逆に、本発明は、テーブル・ドライブン・ソフトウェア・プログラムおよび／またはデータベース・ドライブン基準選択など技術上周知の方法を使って選択を定義できることを開示する。選択基準の決定要因となるテーブルおよび／またはデータベースに含まれるデータは、前に述べたように、視聴者の個々のプロフィルを基にすることができる。ただし、選択の決定要因であるテーブルおよび／またはデータベースは、地理的位置および視聴者がテレビジョン信号を受信する時間帯など他のタイプのデータも含むことができる。さらに、選択の決定要因となる基準は自動的方法に限られない。
本出願は、繰り返し、特定の「チャンネル」にテレビを「チューニング」すると述べている。本出願において、「チャンネル」という言葉は、テレビ・チャンネル、ケーブル・チャンネルおよび衛星チャンネルなど従来の映像および音声通信の方法を含むが、これに限定されない。さらに、「チャンネル」という言葉は、インターネット・ウェブサイト・アドレスおよび外部データ・ソースを含めて（ただし、これに限定されない）映像、音声およびその他の通信のその他の方法も含む。
本発明は、パソコン、ＰＣＴＶ、セットトップ・ボックスに接続されたテレビ、マイクロプロセッサを含むテレビまたはその他の同種の装置で実現できる。米国暫定特許出願第６０／０５７．０８９号「音声および（または）映像ブロック機能を含む電子プログラミング・ガイド」が、あらゆる目的のために本文書に完全に含まれているかのように、参照により本文書に組み込まれる。ただし、本発明は、特定のハードウェア構成または特定のテレビジョン・システムに限定されず、コンピュータとテレビジョン・システムの新しい組み合わせが開発されるにつれて有用性を増大する。たとえば、本発明は、従来のアナログ・テレビに限定されず、デジタル・テレビおよびコンピュータ構成に同等に応用される。
Ａ．ヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更
本発明の１つの態様によれば、ヘッドエンド・プロバイダが、テレビジョン・プログラミング送出信号を監視する。本発明のこの態様を、「ヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更」と呼ぶ。図５は、本発明のヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更態様を示す略図である。図６は、ヘッドエンドにおけるヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更プロセスの流れ図である。図７Ａは、単一の信号受信器／チューナーを持つテレビジョン・システムの略図である。図７Ｂは、視聴者のテレビ受像機におけるヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更プロセスの流れ図である。
ヘッドエンドでの監視１１０は電子的でも手動でもよい。予め決められた基準に従って、ヘッドエンド・プロバイダは、１つまたは複数のチャンネルの垂直帰線消去期間（ＶＢＩ）にチャンネル変更コマンドを挿入する。オプションで、チャンネル変更コマンドに、たとえば秒単位で表される持続時間を付加することができる。予め決められるＶＢＩチャンネル変更コマンド挿入の基準は、たとえば、チャンネル、プログラムおよび広告スケジュール・テーブルにおいて明示される広告のスケジュールを土台にすることができる。その代わりに、ヘッドエンド・プロバイダが送出信号を発して、たとえばテレビ番組から商業広告への変更など特定のイベントを探知することができる。チャンネル変更コマンドは、特定のチャンネルにチューニングするよう受信テレビに命じる。
ヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更の１つの実施態様においては、ヘッドエンド・プロバイダが、特定のチャンネル（チャンネルＡ）のテレビジョン・プログラミング送出信号を監視する１１０。監視されるチャンネルはテーブルまたはデータベース１３０のデータによりヘッドエンドに限定される。ヘッドエンド・モニタは、特定のチャンネルをインターセプトするかどうか３１０を決定する。監視対象のチャネルが広告を放送しだす場合、ヘッドエンド・プロバイダは、特定の広告をチャンネル変更コマンドでインターセプトすべきか否か３２０を決定するために必要な情報を含むテーブルまたはデータベース１４０をチェックする。テーブルおよび（または）データベース１４０は、特に、チャンネル、時間およびチャンネル変更情報を含む。
この集合的情報は、時に、「チャンネルおよび広告インターセプト・データベース情報」と呼ばれる。ヘッドエンド・プロバイダが広告をインターセプトすべきであると決定すると、ヘッドエンド・プロバイダは、第二のチャンネル（チャンネルＢ）に変えるよう受信テレビに命じるチャンネル変更命令をＶＢＩに挿入する３２５。すなわち、ＶＢＩにおけるチャンネル変更コマンド挿入のタイミングは広告の開始と一致する。チャンネルＢは、チャンネルＡの広告放送と時間的に同期化された代替広告および／またはテレビ番組を放送する。テレビはチャンネル変更コマンドを認識し、テレビをＶＢＩコマンドにおいて指示されるチャンネルにチューニングするようプログラムされたマイクロプロセッサを備える。
代わりの実施態様においては、ヘッドエンドは、ＶＢＩにチャンネル変更コマンドを挿入するが３２５、テレビをチューニングする特定のチャンネルを指定しない。この実施態様においては、テレビのマイクロプロセッサが、視聴者プロフィル情報、広告データベースおよびその他の情報を含めて（ただし、これに限定されない）テレビジョン・システムが利用できる情報に基づいてどのチャンネルにテレビをチューニングするかを決定する。
図７Ａは、単一の信号受信器／チューナーを持つテレビジョン・システムの略図である。図７Ｂは、視聴者のテレビ受像機におけるヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更プロセスを示す流れ図である。テレビ受信器２１０は入力テレビジョン信号を受信する。テレビ受信器２１０はチューナーを含んでいる。テレビ受信器は、信号のＶＢＩに含まれる情報をデコードするためにテレビジョン信号をＶＢＩデコーダ２３５に送る。ＶＢＩデコーダ２３５は、デコードされたＶＢＩ情報を解析のためにマイクロプロセッサ２４０に送る。
次に、チャンネルＡにチューニングされた視聴者のテレビ受像機について考えてみる。ヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更環境において、視聴者のテレビ受像機がチャンネルＡのＶＢＩにおいてチャンネル変更コマンドを受け取る場合６００／６１０、テレビジョン・システムは、チャンネル変更コマンドを実行し、テレビ・チューナーにチャンネルＢへのチューニング６２０を命じるようにプログラムされる。ＶＢＩチャンネル変更コマンドに持続時間成分が付加される場合、テレビジョン・システムは、ＶＢＩコマンドに示される持続時間（「チャンネルＢ持続時間」）の間チャンネルＢにチューニングされているようにプログラムされる６４０。チャンネルＢ持続時間が終了すると、テレビはチャンネルＡにチューニングされるようにプログラムされる６５０。本発明の本態様の１つ（「手動介入」実施態様）においては、視聴者がヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更シーケンスに介入し、テレビに特定のチャンネルたとえばチャンネルＣに変更するよう命令すると、テレビはチャンネルＢ持続時間の終了を無視するようにプログラムされる。この手動介入実施態様においては、テレビは、チャンネルＢ持続時間の終了後もチャンネルＣにチューニングされたままである。
別の実施態様においては、テレビは視聴者の手動介入を無視するようにプログラムされ、チャンネルＢ持続時間が終了すると再びテレビをチャンネルＡにチューニングする。別の実施態様においては、ヘッドエンドはチャンネルＡの広告を監視し続ける。チャンネルＡで広告が終了したとヘッドエンドが判定すると、ヘッドエンドは、チャンネルＡにチューニングし直すよう視聴者のテレビに命じるために、チャンネルＡのＶＢＩにチャンネル変更コマンドを挿入する。この実施態様においては、視聴者がチャンネルＢを観ている間も、テレビはチャンネルＡをモニタしている。
視聴者がテレビジョン・モードでテレビを観ている場合、チャンネル変更命令が実行される。本出願において、テレビジョン・モードとは、テレビジョン表示が完全にテレビ画面を占めている状態でリアルタイム・テレビジョン信号（録画された映像信号ではなく）がテレビに表示される間視聴者がテレビを観ているときのテレビジョン動作を意味する。さらに、視聴者がＥＰＧモードの時にもチャンネル変更命令は実行される。本出願において、ＥＰＧモードとは、視聴者がＥＰＧを起動しており、ＥＰＧによりフォーマットされた画面表示がテレビ画面上で明らかであるときのテレビジョン動作を意味する。上に述べたとおり、多くの新式のＥＰＧは、ガイド内画像（ＰＩＧ）ウィンドウとして知られるものを使用する。つまり、テレビがＥＰＧモードで動作するとき、テレビがチューニングされるチャンネルのテレビジョン信号は、テレビの画面の固定位置エリアなどの「ウィンドウ」、つまりガイド内画像ウィンドウに表示される。
図１０は、リアルタイム映像信号の表示のためにガイド内プログラム・ウィンドウ１２を持つ対話式電子プログラム・ガイドの画面表示例を図式的に表したものである。視聴者がＥＰＧモードであり、ＥＰＧがＰＩＧウィンドウ１２にテレビジョン信号を表示しつづける場合にチャンネル変更命令が実行されると、ＰＩＧ表示はＰＩＧウィンドウ１２において変更されたチャンネルを映す。
例として、チャンネルＡでスーパーボールがテレビ放送されている場合を考えてみる。チャンネルＡはいくつかの予定された広告を次々に流すためにスーパーボールのテレビ放送を中断する。ヘッドエンドは、広告が放送されることを意味するテレビジョン信号の変化を探知する。ヘッドエンドは、上に述べたチャンネルおよび広告インターセプト・データベース情報など、広告をインターセプトすべきか否かを決定するために使用できる情報をチェックする。広告をインターセプトすべきであれば、ヘッドエンドは、直ちにチャンネルＢにチューニングするよう命ずる命令をチャンネルＡのＶＢＩに挿入する。
この例において、視聴者は、チャンネルＡにチューニングされた視聴者のテレビ受像機でスーパーボールを観ている。チャンネルＡはビールのコマーシャルを流すためにスーパーボールを中断する。視聴者のテレビはＶＢＩチャンネル変更コマンドを認識しこれを実行するようプログラムされる。視聴者のテレビは、ＶＢＩチャンネル変更コマンドに出会うと、チャンネルＢにチューニングする。チャンネルＢは、全国的に評判のよいブランドのスポーツ用シューズのコマーシャルを流す。チャンネルＢでのコマーシャルが完了すると、視聴者のテレビはチャンネルＡに再びチューニングするようにプログラムされる。チャンネルの変更を視聴者は意識しない。
その代わりに、テレビ受像機がチャンネルＢにチューニングする場合、チャンネルＢは、選手のインタビューおよびチーム推奨のスポーツ設備など、スーパーボール関連の商業的および非商業的混合プログラムを放送する。視聴者のテレビは、チャンネルＢでの商業的および非商業的混合プログラムが終了するとチャンネルＡにチューニングするようプログラムされる。
Ｂ．テレビジョン・チャンネル変更
本発明の別の態様によれば、テレビジョン・システムは、テレビがチューニングしたテレビジョン・プログラミング信号をモニタするようプログラムされる。図９は、１つの実施態様における、ＥＰＧ 視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーションのために必要なコンポーネントを含めたテレビジョン・チャンネル変更プロセスの流れ図である。予め決められた基準に従って、テレビ受像機はテレビジョンにチャンネルを変更するよう命じる（「テレビジョン・チャンネル変更」）。オプションで、チャンネル変更コマンドははっきりと持続時間を指定できる。予め決められたチャンネル変更の基準は、たとえば、あるチャンネルにおいて明示される広告の予定、ＲＡＭに保存される番組および広告スケジュール・テーブル（「広告スケジュール・データベース」）５１０および５３０を基とすることができる。
広告スケジュール・データベースがＲＡＭに保存される実施態様においては、広告スケジュール・データベースのデータ内容は、技術上定評ある方法でたとえばＶＢＩを通じてのデータベース更新送信により更新される。この代わりに、広告スケジュール・データベース５１０および５３０を、インターネットなどテレビジョンがアドレス指定できるロケーションに保存することができる。広告スケジュール・データベースは、インターセプトされる各広告ごとにエントリを含む。各エントリは、特に、インターセプトされる広告を流す予定のチャンネル（チャンネルＡ）、インターセプトされる広告の開始時間、テレビがチューニングされるチャンネル（チャンネルＢ）、およびオプションでテレビがチャンネルＢにチューニングされている持続時間を指定する。
この代わりに、予め決められたチャンネル変更の基準を、チューニングされたテレビジョン信号において探知される特定の変化に基づくことができる。たとえば、テレビジョンはチューニングされた信号を送って、特定のイベントたとえばテレビ番組からコマーシャルへの変化を探知する。このプロセスは、図７Ｂのプロセス流れ図と類似する。テレビジョンは、予め定義されたイベントを探知すると、チャンネルを特定のチャンネルに変えるようにチューナーに命じる。テレビジョン・チャンネル変更の１つの実施態様においては、テレビジョンは、上記の広告スケジュール・データベースの中の情報からチャンネルを変更するための命令を構築する。テレビジョン・チャンネル変更の別の実施態様においては、テレビジョンは、本出願において後で詳細に説明する該当のチャンネル・データ・テーブル・エントリおよび（または）番組リスト・エントリの中の情報からおよび同じく本出願において後で詳細に説明する広告データベースの該当のエントリから、チャンネル変更のための命令を構築する。
前に述べたように、チャンネル変更命令は、視聴者がテレビジョン・モードでテレビを観ている場合に実行される。さらに、チャンネル変更命令は、視聴者がＥＰＧモードの時にも実行されて、ＰＩＧ表示１２はＰＩＧウィンドウ１２に変更されたチャンネルを映す。
これに代わる実施態様においては、テレビジョンは２つのチューナーを装備する。図８は、２つの受信器／チューナーを持つテレビジョン・システムの略図である。この実施態様においては、テレビは、インターセプトされる各コマーシャルの持続時間を保存しないで、チャンネルＢにチューニングするために１つのチューナーを使用する。つまり、テレビジョンは、ヘッドエンド・チャンネル変更に関連して本出願において上に説明したように、いつ広告が終了するかを決定するためにチャンネルＡを監視するために第二のチューナー２８０を使用する。第二のチューナー２８０が広告が終了したことを探知したら、第二のチューナー２８０は、チャンネルＡを画面に表示するようテレビジョンに命じる。これは、２つの方法のうち１つで実行できる。１つの方法は、チャンネルＡにチューニングするために第一のチューナーを使用するようテレビジョンに命じる方法である。第二の方法は、チャンネルＢにチューニングされる第一のチューナーからすでにチャンネルＡにチューニングされている第二のチューナーに画面表示の制御を切り替える方法である。
Ｃ．ＥＰＧ インプリメンテーション
本発明の別の態様によれば、視聴者が観ているテレビジョン信号の変更は、視聴者がＥＰＧを起動するときにしか実行されない。本発明のこの態様は、「ＥＰＧインプリメンテーション」と呼ばれる。
ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションにおいては、データベース・エンジン（ＤＢＥ）は、ＲＡＭにデータベースを構築する。図１は、このデータベースの階層構造を示している。１つの実施態様においては、データベースは、ハンドルおよびハンドル・テーブルによってリンクされるスケジュール・データ構造およびテーマ・データ構造として内部に構成される。各ハンドルは、データベースの構造が記憶されるメモリのブロックのポインタを含むハンドル・テーブルのインデクスである。
１つの実施態様において、スケジュール・データ構造の階層は、降順で下記のとおりである：
チャンネル・データ・テーブル：加入者ユニットのチャンネル・リストを含んでいる。
番組リスト：１つのチャンネルで放送予定の各番組に関するタイム・スロットを含んでいる。
番組タイトル：タイトル・テキストおよび番組タイトル属性を含んでいる。
番組説明：番組の評価、属性および説明テキストを含んでいる。
図２Ａに示されるチャンネル・データ・テーブルは、上記の階層の最上位のデータ構造である。このテーブルは、視聴者のテレビが受信する各チャンネルごとにエントリを含んでいる。チャンネル・データ・テーブルのエントリはあまり変更されることはなく、加入者ユニットのロケーションおよび受けるサービスのタイプによって決まる。チャンネル・データ・テーブルの各エントリは、該当チャンネルに関する情報およびそのチャンネルに関する番組リスト・ハンドル・テーブルのハンドルを含んでいる。さらに、ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションにおいては、チャンネル・データ・テーブルは、ＤＢＥが受け取るコマンドによって設定される音声ブロック・ビット（ＡＢＢ）および映像ブロック・ビット（ＶＢＢ）を含む。
図２Ｂに示されるとおり、階層の次のデータ構造は番組リストである。番組リストは、通常ＧＭＴ真夜中を開始時間として２４時間のスケジュールを含む。チャンネルのスケジュールは番組スロットのシーケンスで示され、特定の日に特定のチャンネルが放送する各番組ごとに番組スロットを１つ持つ。各スロットは、持続時間、番組タイトル・ハンドルおよび番組説明ハンドルを含む。所定の開始時間に該当するエントリを探すためには、番組リストの始めから順番にエントリをスキャンし、持続時間値を加算する必要がある。ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションにおいては、番組スロットはＡＢＢおよびＶＢＢを含む。
ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様においては、チャンネル・テーブル・ハンドルおよび番組リスト・エントリの両方のＡＢＢおよびＶＢＢに、下に説明する広告データベースのエントリへのポインタを含めた追加情報が付加される。
上に説明したプログラム・スケジュール・データのほかに、ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様は、ローカル・テレビジョン・システムに広告データベースを作成し、保存する。広告データベースは、映像、音声、グラフおよび／またはテキスト・コンポーネントから成る広告を含む。広告データベースは、また、特定のチャンネルにチューニングするための命令を含むことができる。システムはチャンネル・チューニング命令を使って広告を流すチャンネルにテレビをチューニングする。
ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様においては、本発明は、現在視聴者のテレビ受像機がチューニングされている映像および／または音声信号をブロックすべきか否かを決定するために、上に説明され図２Ａおよび２Ｂに示されるチャンネル・データ・テーブルのチャンネルＩＤエントリおよび番組リスト・データ構造の番組リスト・エントリにおいて音声ブロック・ビット（ＡＢＢ）および映像ブロック・ビット（ＶＢＢ）を使用する。図３は、１つの実施多様における音声および（または）映像ブロックを起動するためのステップのフロー・チャートである。ＡＢＢおよびＶＢＢデータ・フィールドに保存される値は、各チャンネルおよび各番組ごとに事前に設定される。図４Ａは、ＥＰＧ表示がテレビジョン信号のリアルタイム映像表示の一部だけをオーバーレイしているテレビ画面上のＥＰＧ表示を示す略図である。図４Ｂは、ＥＰＧ表示がテレビジョン信号のリアルタイム映像表示全体をオーバーレイ（ブロック）しているテレビ画面４００上のＥＰＧ表示４０５を示す略図である。
ユーザーがＥＰＧを起動すると、ＥＰＧは、視聴者がＥＰＧを入力する前にチューニングされていたチャンネルのチャンネル・テーブル・エントリのＶＢＢをチェックする。ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様においては、現在チューニングされているチャンネルのチャンネル・テーブル・エントリのＶＢＢが「オン」に設定されている場合、ＥＰＧ表示は、完全に画面にかぶるように調整される。つまり、視聴者が観ていた番組は完全にブロックされる。
同様に、現在チューニングされているチャンネルのＡＢＢがチェックされる。現在チューニングされているチャンネルのチャンネル・テーブル・エントリのＡＢＢが「オン」に設定されている場合、ＥＰＧは、視聴者がＥＰＧを入力したときチューニングされていたチャンネルの音声部分をブロックする。つまり、テレビジョン・システムに送られる信号がチャンネル３／４出力に変調される場合、音声信号は出力信号に変調されない。
音声ブロックか映像ブロックが起動されると、上記の広告データベースがアクセスされる。ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様においては、システムは、時間帯、曜日、ＥＰＧを起動する直前まで視聴者が観ていた番組のタイプおよび（または）ＥＰＧを起動する直前まで視聴者がチューニングしていたチャンネルを含めた（ただしこれに限定されない）基準に応じて予めプログラムされた一連の命令に従って、広告データベースにアクセスする。予めプログラムされた一連の命令は、該当のウィンドウおよび／またはＥＰＧ 表示のウィンドウに表示する適切な広告を決定する。予めプログラムされた一連の命令は、さらに視聴者のテレビ画面に表示する適切な広告を決定するために視聴者プロフィル特性を利用することもできる。
ＥＰＧインプリメンテーションの別の実施態様においては、チャンネル・テーブル・エントリおよび番組リスト・エントリの両方のＡＢＢおよびＶＢＢに、上に説明した広告データベース５３５のエントリへの追加ポインタが付加される。この実施態様においては、ＡＢＢかＶＢＢが「オン」に設定されていると、システムは、ＡＢＢおよび／またはＶＢＢの連想ポインタが命じるとおりに広告データベースにアクセスする。システムは、次に、映像か、音声か、グラフか、テキストかまたはコマンドかに関係なく、広告データを使って、別のチャンネルにチューニングして、視聴者にＰＩＧ表示ウィンドウでまたはＥＰＧのその他のウィンドウまたは表示装置で代替広告を送る。その代わりに、インターネットへのリンクにより代替広告データにアクセスすることができる。また、この代わりに、ＥＰＧプロバイダがヘッドエンドからたとえばＶＢＩを通じて、映像、音声、グラフおよび（または）テキストを含めて代替広告データを送ることができる。
Ｄ．ＥＰＧ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーション
本発明のさらに別の態様によれば、視聴者が観ているテレビジョン信号への変更は、テレビジョンがＥＰＧを備え、ＥＰＧが視聴者プロフィルとして知られるデータ収集に基づいて広告をカスタマイズするようプログラムされている場合のみ、実行される。本発明のこの態様は、「ＥＧＰ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーション」と呼ばれる。米国特許出願第０９／１２０４８８号、事件整理番号第３２７１４／ＬＴＲ／Ｅ１９０号（その開示はあらゆる目的のために参照により本文書に組み込まれる）は、視聴者プロフィル・データの収集について開示している。ＥＰＧ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーションは、必ずしも実際にＥＰＧを起動する視聴者に依存しない。
ＥＰＧ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様においては、テレビジョン・システムは、視聴者が見ているテレビ番組のリアルタイム放送中見ることができる放送広告の紹介および（または）予定をカスタマイズするために視聴者プロフィル情報５２０を使用する。一例は、地理的区域に基づいて広告へのオーバーレイ・メッセージをカスタマイズするものである。たとえば、ある視聴者の地理的位置がテレビジョン・システムに分かっているとする。放送局またはヘッドエンドは、郵便番号ごとに異なるメッセージ（たとえば視聴者の地域の３店のバーガー・キングなど）を受けるようにメッセージをカスタマイズするために郵便番号に合わせてパケットすることができる。
１つの実施態様においては、カスタマイズされたメッセージを、郵便番号別に特定の視聴者のテレビジョン・システムのメモリにＥＰＧを使うなどしてプレロードすることができる。プレロードされたメッセージは、ヘッドエンドが閑散時に送信して、たとえばテレビ番組中または広告ウィンドウ１４および（または）１６のビデオクリップにおいて広告を流すときに使用するために視聴者のターミナルに保存することができる。メッセージを流すための電子トリガは、リアルタイムでテレビジョン信号といっしょに送信することができ、使用する必要のあるユーザー・ターミナルに保存されているメッセージを識別することができる。
ＥＰＧ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーションの別の実施態様においては、ヘッドエンドに保存される視聴者プロフィル情報に従って、カスタマイズされたメッセージがテレビ放送広告といっしょに限定放送される。カスタマイズされたメッセージを限定放送するための１つの方法は、広告映像ストリームにカスタマイズされた情報を埋め込む方法である。別の方法は、広告の映像ストリームでデジタル「ウォーターマーク」を送信する方法である。
ＥＰＧ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーションの１つの実施態様においては、複数の広告チャンネルを用意し、広告が放送される予定の時間にテレビ番組の放送中にテレビを自動的に特定の広告チャンネルにチューニングし、広告終了時に視聴者が選択したテレビ番組にテレビをチューニングし直すことにより、広告のリアルタイム視聴をカスタマイズする。ＥＰＧ視聴者プロフィル・インプリメンテーションにおいては、ＥＰＧは、視聴者プロフィル５２０に基づいて複数の広告チャンネルのうちどのチャンネルにチューニングするようテレビに命じるかを決定する。
別の実施態様においては、広告が特定のチャンネルで放送されるときに、ヘッドエンドに保存される視聴者プロフィル情報１６０に基づいて、広告用サービス・モニタが垂直帰線消去期間（ＶＢＩ）にチャンネル変更コマンドを挿入し、このチャンネル変更コマンドがテレビを特定のチャンネルにチューニングする。この代わりに、ヘッドエンドがチャンネル変更コマンドを挿入して、視聴者のテレビのＥＰＧが、視聴者プロフィル５２０に従って複数の選択可能な広告チャンネルのうちどのチャンネルにテレビをチューニングすべきかを決定することができる。
本出願において、視聴者プロフィルとは、ＥＰＧが収集できる視聴者のあらゆるデータを含み、米国特許出願第０９／１２０４８８号、事件整理番号第３２７１４／ＬＴＲ／Ｅ１９０号において視聴者プロフィル・データ、視聴者プロフィル特性、視聴者プロフィル情報および／または視聴者プロフィルとして説明される情報を含み（ただし、これに限定されない）、また上記の文書において説明される「アクセス内容」情報モデル、「直前内容」情報モデルおよび「使用履歴」情報モデルも含む。
ＥＰＧは、視聴者のターミナルのＲＡＭに記憶される広告ライブラリ５３５を含めて（ただし、これに限定されない）様々なロケーションから広告を選択できる。広告ライブラリは、ＶＢＩを通じてダウンロードされるか、ヘッドエンドで保存されるか、インターネット／ＷＷＷへのＥＰＧ リンクを通じてアクセスできる。広告５３５としては、グラフ、テキスト、ビデオクリップ、オーディオクリップおよびこれらの組み合わせが考えられる。各広告にはテーマ・コード、プロフィル・コードおよびその他の選択情報を割り当てることができる。１つの実施態様においては、広告表示をカスタマイズするために、ＥＰＧは、「アクセス内容」、「直前内容」、「使用履歴」および（または）視聴者プロフィル情報について広告主が設定する基準に合致する広告を突き止めるために使用可能広告のライブラリを検索する。別の実施態様においては、ＥＰＧは、予め定められた選択基準に従って表示する広告を選択する。
