Abstract

939,813. Beverage making apparatus. RUDD-MELIKIAN Inc. Oct. 7, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958], No. 34042/59. Class 129. A beverage dispenser comprises an extraction chamber consisting of two relatively movable members 12, 27 having respectively inlet and outlet ports 52, 28 for extraction fluid, indexing means 15 being provided for advancing cartridges 14 of beverage material, serially mounted in an elongated carrier 13, successively into and out of the extraction chamber. As shown, an indexing head 11 has a series of stations 25 and pins 15 which engage apertures 16 in assembly 13 to locate the cartridges 14 at the stations 25. Head 11 is carried on a shaft 17 rotated by a Geneva stop movement driven from the main shaft 22 which is driven by motor 24. During one revolution of shaft 22, head 11 occupies one position for two-thirds of the time and the next position for one-third of the time. Each station 25 comprises a cup 27 with an outlet duct 28 which receives spring clips 30 supporting a screen 29. When a cup 27 is in its top position, its duct 28 is connected to a nozzle 35 beneath which is placed a cup 36. The head 12 is carried on a pivoted arm 37 connected by a link 39 to a yoke member 40 with a cam follower 41 which engages a cam track 43 in a cam 44 rotating with shaft 22. One complete revolution of cam 44 causes one cycle during which the head 12 moves downwards, dwells in the lower position, rises and dwells in the upper position. Head 12 comprises a dome 45 carried on a sleeve 47 which telescopes in a hood 48 against the action of a coil spring 49. A valve member 53 secured to hood 48 engages a valve seat 54 to close port 52. When head 12 is moved downwards and a gasket 46 surrounding dome 45 engages head 11, movement of dome 45 ceases but hood 48 continues and port 52 is opened to allow extracting fluid to be fed to the beverage material in the cartridge currently held between heads 11 and 12. Motor 24 is controlled by a push-button or coin-operated switch which causes the motor 24 to drive the shaft 22 through one revolution and is then de-energized. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the dispenser includes an arrangement for stripping an impermeable strip from the cartridge assembly 13. Specification 939,814 is referred to.
