Description

Set of cartridges intended for the preparation of a drink using a machine
The present patent relates to a set of cartridges intended for the preparation of a drink using a machine.

The assembly according to the invention is capable of being used in machines intended in particular for the distribution of coffee, tea and other beverages which are produced by infusion of a solid base material soluble in water.

The assembly object of the invention is characterized in that it comprises an elongate support in a flexible material permeable to the fluid in which are arranged distinct masses of material for the preparation of the drink, regularly spaced and which are retained and covered by the flexible material, and indexing means arranged on the support and intended to cooperate with corresponding means of the machine so that each of these masses can be brought into a precise position in which it is subjected to the preparation of the beverage.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the set of cartridges which are the subject of the invention, capable of being used in the machine forming the subject of patent No. 362816, the detailed description of this machine that can be seen in said patent.

Fig. 1 is a vertical section of one of the cartridges intended for the preparation of a drink in position in said machine, certain parts of this machine being shown in elevation.

Fig. 2 is an end view of the machine of FIG. 1, from the left of this figure, and also shows the set of cartridges.

Fig. 3 is a partial plan view of the machine of FIG. 2 with the extraction head removed.

Fig. 4 is a schematic perspective view of a mechanism for removing a protective film from the cartridge assembly.

The machine shown comprises a frame bearing the general reference index 10 on which are supported a feed head generally indicated by 1 1 and an extraction head generally indicated by 12. The heads 11 and 12 cooperate with a set of cartridges bearing the general reference index 13 to produce and dispense a beverage.

As can be seen in fig. 2, the cartridge assembly 13 comprises a series of cartridges 14 containing material for the preparation of a beverage such as, for example, ground coffee.

The assembly 13 is formed of two continuous bands of a material permeable to the fluid, such as paper, fixed by gluing to one another along their edges and transversely between the cartridges 14 so as to leave a space in each cartridge 14 for a determined quantity of material for the preparation of a drink. Indexing means are arranged on the assembly to cooperate with other means arranged on the machine so that the cartridges can be brought into a position such that the drink can be extracted by the machine. In the drawing, an example of such indexing means has been shown on the set of cartridges in the form of openings 16.

The set of cartridges can be manufactured in any convenient length depending on the service for which the set is intended; if, for example, we are dealing with a coffee dispensing machine capable of delivering 100 cups of coffee between the different services, a set of 7.60 m long cartridges on which the cartridges are spaced at 75 mm axis in axis will provide the necessary capacity.

In fig. 2, a set of cartridges 13 is shown in engagement with the advance head 11, which engagement is maintained by pins 15 formed on the advance head 11 and entering the indexing means, that is to say say in 16 punched openings in 13 cartridge set.

The feed head 11 is mounted so that it can be rotated - clockwise in fig. 2 - but it should be noted that the set of cartridges intended for the preparation of a drink could be used in other dispensing machines having other means for bringing the cartridges into the extraction position.

In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the set of cartridges is prepared for use by threading the end of the set of cartridges 13 over the top of the feed head 11 so that the first cartridge 14 is juxtaposed with a screen 29 of the station of the advance head which is in the highest position, so that the openings 16 of the set of cartridges 13 are crossed by the pins 15 of the advance head 11.

The dispensing machine can then automatically bring one of the cartridges into the position ensuring the dispensing of a cup of drink, then withdraw the used cartridge from this position while it brings another into said position ensuring a new dispensing.

The cartridge assembly described is useful when beverages need to be dispensed under conditions such as relatively long periods of time - on the order of several days may elapse between uses of the machine.

It may then be desirable to provide greater protection to the material enclosed in the cartridges than that afforded to it by the permeable layers thereof.

For this purpose, an impermeable sheath can be provided for the assembly of cartridges, for example a sheath such as that shown in FIG. 4.

Said sheath may comprise two strips 63 of an impermeable material such as an aluminum foil or a polyethylene film, fixed by gluing on one or the other of their edges as indicated at 64. The ends of the strips can also be attached to each other; such a treatment of the bands is shown at 65 in FIG. 4. It will be understood that the two ends of the sheath are treated in this way at the time of manufacture, and that a vacuum can be created in the space included inside the sheath or that the latter can be filled with a inert gas to protect the contents until the set of cartridges is introduced into the dispensing machine.

Part of a machine which uses such sheathed cartridge assemblies is also shown in fig. 4. This part includes means for removing the impermeable material. These means are arranged on each side of a supply channel for the set of cartridges, that is to say a channel leading to the extraction position, and may comprise two pairs of rollers arranged in such a manner. that their rollers clamp the two impermeable bands 63 together so as to separate them from one another and from the support 13 comprising the cartridges 14. The outer rollers 66 of each pair are driven in synchronism with the advance head 11 so as to wind at each advance step of the head 11, a length of protective material equal to the distance separating the centers of two neighboring cartridges 14 of the cartridge holder 13.

The inner rollers 67 of each pair are idle rollers which can be elastically urged against the drive rollers 66 by any suitable means.

When a machine comprising the members of FIG. 4 is put into service, the sealed leading end of the set of cartridges is opened by separating the two protective strips 63 which are threaded into the interstices between the two pairs of rollers. At the same time, the first cartridge is threaded onto the feed head 1 1 as described above. The pairs of rollers 66, 67 remove a length of the protective cover strips 63 from the cartridge assembly.
