- the main noise generated by a typical outdoor unit is a narrowband rotational noise (NZ noise) generated when the fan is operating, i.e., a peak noise (primary peak noise) calculated based on the number of blades and the rotation frequency of the fan.
- NZ noise narrowband rotational noise
- Such outdoor units often employ large fans (e.g., fan 20 with a diameter of approximately 40 cm to 50 cm) to increase the volume of air blown.
- the fan rotation speed is low, and as a result, the fan rotation noise, while still within the audible range, is a low-frequency sound of approximately 50 Hz (wavelength of 6 m or more).
- this low-frequency fan rotation noise is less effectively silencing with typical noise-absorbing materials, making it difficult to implement silencing measures.
- the inventors focused on the fact that the source of fan rotation noise is a dipole sound source in acoustics.
- a "dipole sound source” is characterized by radiating sound in opposite directions, with the phases of the sounds radiated in opposite directions being inverted. Since the fan rotation noise in an outdoor unit is radiated in opposite directions, the inventors hypothesized that interference between the radiated sounds cancels out the other sounds, providing a noise reduction effect. Based on this assumption, the inventors came up with the idea of a configuration in which resonators are placed on both sides of the sound source. The noise reduction effect of this configuration was evaluated using a simulation model of an acoustic tube equivalent to the outdoor unit. The evaluation results are shown below.
- the simulation model for comparison is a model in which a resonator is placed at a position corresponding to one of the sounds emitted in opposite directions from a sound source (hereinafter also referred to as a "single-sided placement model").
- a 50 Hz sound source G serving as a dipole sound source was set inside an acoustic tube Ac, and a tubular resonator Re was curved and arranged along the outer circumferential surface of the acoustic tube Ac.
- An opening was arranged at one end of the resonator Re, and the opening was connected to the internal space of the resonator Re.
- the sound source G and the resonator Re were arranged at different positions in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac; more specifically, they were arranged at a distance D3 apart. Note that, as shown in Fig. 6, the distance D3 corresponds to the distance between the center of the sound source G and the center of the opening at one end of the resonator Re in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac.
- the resonant frequency of the resonator Re was set to 50 Hz, the same as that of the sound source G, and the length of the resonator Re was set to 149.7 cm.
- FIG. 5 is a graph showing the relationship between the distance D3 between the sound source G and the resonator Re and the amount of sound attenuation of the sound emitted by the acoustic tube Ac.
- the horizontal axis represents the distance D3
- the vertical axis represents the amount of sound attenuation. Note that the distance D3 was evaluated within 0.3 m, assuming that the first resonator Re1 is installed compactly. As a result of the evaluation of the one-sided arrangement model, as shown in FIG. 5, no sound silencing effect was obtained, and rather the sound emitted by the acoustic tube Ac was louder than when the resonator Re was not arranged.
- the simulation model according to the present invention is a model in which resonators are arranged at positions corresponding to sounds on both sides of sounds radiated in opposite directions from a sound source (hereinafter also referred to as a "double-sided arrangement model").
- a double-sided arrangement model As shown in FIG. 7 , a 50 Hz sound source G serving as a dipole sound source was set inside an acoustic tube Ac, and a first resonator Re1 and a second resonator Re2, each forming a tubular body, were curved and arranged along the outer circumferential surface of the acoustic tube Ac.
- the first resonator Re1 and the second resonator Re2 were arranged on both sides of the sound source G in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac. More specifically, they were arranged in opposite directions from the sound source G by a distance D4 in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac. Note that, as shown in FIG. 9 , the distance D4 corresponds to the distance between the center of the sound source G and the center of the opening at one end of each resonator Re1 and Re2 in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac.
- the resonant frequencies of the resonators Re1 and Re2 were set to 50 Hz, the same as that of the sound source G, and the lengths of the tubes forming the resonators Re1 and Re2 were set to 149.7 cm.
- FIG. 8 is a graph showing the relationship between the distance D4 between the sound source G and each of the resonators Re1 and Re2 and the amount of sound attenuation generated by the acoustic tube Ac.
- the horizontal axis represents the distance D4
- the vertical axis represents the amount of sound attenuation. Note that the distance D4 was evaluated within 0.3 m, assuming that the first resonator Re1 is installed compactly.
- FIG. 8 when the distance D4 was 0.1 m, a silencing level of approximately 3 dB was obtained, and when it was 0.3 m, a silencing level of approximately 7 dB was obtained, demonstrating a sufficient silencing effect.
- the noise reduction mechanism in such a double-sided arrangement model will be described in more detail with reference to FIG.
- the double-sided arrangement model first, sounds with inverted phases are radiated from the sound source G in opposite directions in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac.
- the sound radiated from the sound source G toward the first resonator Re1 reaches the position of the first resonator Re1, it is reflected by the first resonator Re1 and travels toward the second resonator Re2 in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac.
- the sound reflected by the first resonator Re1 has an inverted phase.
- the sound radiated from the sound source G toward the second resonator Re2 reaches the position of the second resonator Re2, it is reflected by the second resonator Re2 and travels toward the first resonator Re1 in the extension direction of the acoustic tube Ac.
- the sound reflected by the second resonator Re2 has an inverted phase.
- the reflected sounds with inverted phases interfere with each other near the sound source G, canceling each other out.
- the sound that is not canceled out is reflected again by the first resonator Re1 and the second resonator Re2, and the re-reflected sounds cancel each other out.
- the noise reduction mechanism in such a double-sided arrangement model is also applied to the blower with silencer 10 according to this embodiment. More specifically, in the silencer-equipped blower 10, sounds with opposite phases are first radiated in opposite directions in the front-to-rear direction from the sound source of the fan 20, i.e., from the leading ends of the blades 23. The sound radiated from the sound source of the fan 20 toward the first resonator 50 is reflected by the first resonator 50, which is positioned at a distance D1 from the sound source of the fan 20, as shown in Fig. 2, and travels toward the second resonator 60 in the front-to-rear direction. At this time, the sound reflected by the first resonator 50 has an inverted phase.
- the sound radiated from the sound source of the fan 20 toward the second resonator 60 is reflected by the second resonator 60, which is positioned at a distance D2 from the sound source of the fan 20, and travels in the front-to-rear direction toward the first resonator 50.
- the sound reflected by the second resonator 60 has an inverted phase. Then, the reflected sounds with inverted phases interfere with each other near the fan 20, and cancel each other out.
- the silencer-equipped blower 10 can appropriately muffle the sound emitted by the blower 11 by reflecting and canceling out the sound emitted from the sound source of the fan 20. Furthermore, because the sound pressure at the sound source of the fan 20 is reduced, the sound emissivity is also reduced, resulting in more appropriate muffled sound emitted by the blower 11.
- the blower 11 of this embodiment is equipped with a side intake port 35 in addition to the intake port 33. This makes the air flow inside the blower 11 complex, and therefore the sound distribution is also complex.
- a blower 11 equipped with such a side intake port 35 may emit a louder sound than a blower without an intake port 33.
- blower 11 there are two air paths through the casing 30: a first path that extends linearly in the front-to-rear direction from the intake port 33 toward the exhaust port 34; and a second path that extends to the right from the side intake port 35 when viewed from the front, and then changes course to the front after reaching a point where it joins the first path.
- the air entering through the side intake port 35 travels to the right from the side intake port 35 when viewed from the front, and then joins with the air entering through the intake port 33 at the rear of the blades 23 and further rearward.
- the second opening 61 is positioned closer to the side intake port 35 than the center of the casing 30 in the left-right direction. As a result, as shown in FIG. 3, the second opening 61 is positioned at a point closer to the point where noise caused by wind turbulence is generated among all points circumferentially around the edge of the exhaust port 34 when viewed from the front-to-back direction. This allows noise caused by wind turbulence to properly enter the internal space S2 of the second housing 62, and as a result, the noise caused by wind turbulence can be properly silenced by the second resonator 60.
- the silencer 12 has a first resonator 50 and a second resonator 60, and the second opening 61 is positioned closer to the side intake port 35 than the center of the casing 30 in the left-right direction. This ensures that the intake volume of the blower 11 is maintained while adequately silencing the sound emitted by the blower 11.
- the first resonator 50 is attached to one end 38 of the casing 30 in the front-rear direction
- the second resonator 60 is attached to the other end 39 of the casing 30 in the front-rear direction.
- the first resonator 50 is attached to the first holder 36
- the second resonator 60 is attached to the second holder 37. This makes it easier to arrange the first opening 51 of the first resonator 50 closer to the intake port 33, and makes it easier to arrange the second opening 61 of the second resonator 60 closer to the exhaust port 34.
- the sound emitted by the blower 11 in the front-to-rear direction can be more appropriately silenced.
- the point where the wind from the intake port 33 and the wind from the side intake port 35 meet is located on an extension of the virtual axis K of the side intake port 35.
- the virtual axis L perpendicular to the second opening 61 is parallel to the virtual axis K perpendicular to the side intake port 35, so the second opening 61 can be oriented near the point where noise caused by wind turbulence occurs. This allows the sound emitted by the blower 11 to be appropriately muted.
- the first resonator 50 when the peak frequency of the sound generated by the rotation of the fan 20 is F, the first resonator 50 is configured so that its resonant frequency is 0.9 F or more and 1.1 F or less, and the second resonator 60 is configured so that its resonant frequency is 0.9 F or more and 1.1 F or less.
- the first resonator 50 and the second resonator 60 can appropriately reflect the sound generated by the rotation of the fan 20 and can also appropriately muffle the sound generated by the rotation of the fan that has entered the internal space S1 and the internal space S2.
- the sound generated by the blower 11 can be appropriately muffled.
- the fan 20 is an axial fan, and the airflow direction is along the axial direction of the rotation axis R of the axial fan. Therefore, the sound emitted by the blower 11 in the axial direction of the rotation axis R (front-rear direction) can be appropriately muted.

- the first opening 51 is disposed at a point closer to the point where noise caused by wind turbulence is generated among all points along the edge of the intake port 33 in the circumferential direction of the intake port 33. This allows noise caused by wind turbulence to properly enter the internal space S1 of the first housing 52, and as a result, the noise caused by wind turbulence can be properly muffled by the first resonator 50.
