Description

電池セル、およびレドックスフロー電池システム
 本開示は、電池セル、およびレドックスフロー電池システムに関する。
 本出願は、2023年12月1日に出願した日本出願第2023-203975号に基づく優先権を主張し、前記日本出願に記載された全ての記載内容を援用するものである。
 特許文献1は、蓄電池の一つとしてレドックスフロー電池システムを開示する。レドックスフロー電池システムは電池セルを備える。電池セルは、隔膜によって区画された正極セルと負極セルとを備える。レドックスフロー電池システムでは、正極セルに正極電解液を循環させると共に、負極セルに負極電解液を循環させることで、充電または放電を行う。これらの電解液は、価数が変化することで充電または放電を行う活物質イオンを含む。
 レドックスフロー電池システムの運転時、正極セルから負極セルに、または負極セルから正極セルに活物質イオンが移動することがある。活物質イオンの移動によって、正極電解液における正極活物質イオンの濃度と、負極電解液における負極活物質イオンの濃度とのバランスが変化し、レドックスフロー電池システムの電池特性の低下が生じる。特許文献1のレドックスフロー電池システムでは、正極電解液と負極電解液とを混合し、上記バランスの変化を是正している。

 本開示の電池セルは、正極電極と、負極電極と、隔膜と、多孔質体と、を備える。前記多孔質体は、前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間、前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間、または前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間および前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間のそれぞれ、に配置されている。前記多孔質体は、絶縁性材料によって構成された多孔質の基体と、前記基体の少なくとも一部に形成された被覆部と、を備える。前記被覆部は、陽イオン交換材料および陰イオン交換材料の少なくとも一方を含む。

 電池セルにおいて正極電解液と負極電解液とを混合すると、自己放電によって蓄電した電力の一部が無駄になる。そのため、正極セルから負極セルに、または負極セルから正極セルに移動する活物質イオンを減らしたいというニーズ、すなわち隔膜を透過する活物質イオンを減らしたいというニーズがある。さらに、正極電解液と負極電解液とを混合する頻度を低下させたいというニーズがある。
 本開示は、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンを減らすことができる電池セル、およびレドックスフロー電池システムを提供することを目的の一つとする。
 本開示の電池セルは、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンを減らすことができる。
 最初に本開示の実施態様を列記して説明する。本明細書では、正極電極と負極電極とを区別せず、単に電極と呼ぶ場合がある。陽イオン交換材料と陰イオン交換材料とを区別せず、単にイオン交換材料と呼ぶ場合がある。
 <1>本開示の一態様に係る電池セルは、正極電極と、負極電極と、隔膜と、多孔質体と、を備える。前記多孔質体は、前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間、前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間、または前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間および前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間のそれぞれ、に配置されている。前記多孔質体は、絶縁性材料によって構成された多孔質の基体と、前記基体の少なくとも一部に形成された被覆部と、を備える。前記被覆部は、陽イオン交換材料および陰イオン交換材料の少なくとも一方を含む。
 隔膜は、プロトン透過性を有する。つまり、電池としての電気的中性を保つためのイオン、代表的にはプロトン、が隔膜を透過する。陽イオン交換材料は、選択的に特定の陽イオンを交換する性質を有する材料である。陰イオン交換材料は、選択的に特定の陰イオンを交換する性質を有する材料である。
 イオン交換材料を含む多孔質体が隔膜と電極との間に配置されていることにより、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減できる。例えば、隔膜と負極電極との間に多孔質体が配置されていれば、負極活物質イオンが隔膜へ到達しにくく、したがって正極電解液に移動しにくい。この理由は、イオン交換材料が活物質イオンを移動しにくくしているためと考えられる。
 隔膜を透過する活物質イオンが少なくなると、電池セルを含むレドックスフロー電池システムの電流効率が向上し易い。また、正極電解液と負極電解液とを混合する頻度を低下させることができる。このため、レドックスフロー電池システムに蓄電した電力が無駄になりにくい。したがって、本開示の電池セルでは、電流効率が向上する。
 基体は三次元の網目構造の骨格を有する。被覆部はこの骨格の表面の少なくとも一部に形成されている。多孔質体は複数の空孔を有する。電解液が多孔質体の空孔を通過できるため、電池セルにおける電解液の流れが阻害されにくい。そのため、多孔質体が配置されても、電池セルのセル抵抗率は増加しにくい。
 多孔質体が配置されることによって、電極と隔膜とが接触しにくくなるので、隔膜が損傷しにくい。例えば、電極が複数の炭素繊維を有する繊維集合体で構成されていても、多孔質体が電極と隔膜との間に配置されていれば、炭素繊維が隔膜に突き刺さりにくく、隔膜が損傷しにくい。
 <2>上記<1>に記載される電池セルにおいて、前記多孔質体は、前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間および前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間のそれぞれに配置されていてもよい。
 多孔質体が、正極電極と隔膜との間および負極電極と隔膜との間のそれぞれに配置されていれば、電池セルの電流効率がより向上し、隔膜がより損傷しにくい。
 <3>上記<1>に記載される電池セルにおいて、前記多孔質体は、前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間にのみ配置されていてもよい。
 負極活物質イオンが、正極活物質イオンよりも隔膜を透過し易い場合がある。例えば、バナジウム系レドックスフロー電池システムでは、2価のバナジウムイオンが隔膜を透過し易い。負極電極と隔膜との間に多孔質体が配置されていれば、負極活物質イオンが隔膜へ到達しにくく、したがって正極電解液に移動しにくい。
 多孔質体が負極電極と隔膜との間にのみ配置されていれば、多孔質体が配置されても電池セルのセル抵抗率が増加しにくい。また、電池セルの部品点数をできるだけ少なくすることができる。
 <4>上記<1>から<3>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記陰イオン交換材料は、1級から3級アミノ基を含む材料、4級アンモニウム基を含む材料、および窒素を有する複素環式分子を含む材料からなる群から選択される1つ以上の材料であってもよい。
 これらの陰イオン交換材料は、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減する。
 <5>上記<1>から<4>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記被覆部は、前記陽イオン交換材料および前記陰イオン交換材料の両方を含んでいてもよい。
 被覆部が陽イオン交換材料と陰イオン交換材料の両方を含むと、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンがより減少する。このため、電池セルを含むレドックスフロー電池システムの電流効率がより向上し易い。
 <6>上記<1>から<4>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記被覆部は、前記陽イオン交換材料を含まず、前記陰イオン交換材料のみを含んでもよい。
 被覆部に含まれるイオン交換材料が、陰イオン交換材料のみであっても、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンが減少し、電池セルを含むレドックスフロー電池システムの電流効率が向上し易い。
 <7>上記<1>から<5>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記陽イオン交換材料は、スルホン酸基を含む材料、カルボン酸基を含む材料、およびリン酸基を含む材料からなる群から選択される1つ以上の材料であってもよい。
 上記陽イオン交換材料は、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減する。
 <8>上記<1>から<7>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記陽イオン交換材料および前記陰イオン交換材料の少なくとも一方は、炭化水素系イオン交換材料を含んでいてもよい。
 炭化水素系イオン交換材料は、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減する。
 <9>上記<1>から<8>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記絶縁性材料は、ポリエチレン、ポリプロピレン、エチレン-αオレフィン共重合体、ビニル共重合体樹脂、エンジニアリングプラスチック、スーパーエンジニアリング系樹脂、またはハロゲン含有樹脂であってもよい。
 上記絶縁性材料によって構成された基体は、柔軟性に優れるため、多孔質体が隔膜に接触しても隔膜が損傷しにくい。
 <10>上記<1>から<9>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記隔膜の厚さは60μm以下であってもよい。
 隔膜の厚さが60μm(マイクロメートル)以下であれば、プロトンが隔膜を透過し易い。そのため、隔膜がプロトン透過性を有する場合、電池セルの抵抗率を低減し易い。隔膜が薄くなるほど、活物質イオンが隔膜を透過し易くなる。本開示の電池セルでは、隔膜が薄くても、多孔質体によって隔膜を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減できるので、レドックスフロー電池システムの電流効率が低下しにくい。
 <11>上記<10>に記載される電池セルにおいて、前記隔膜の厚さは5μm以上であってもよい。
 厚さが5μm以上の隔膜は損傷しにくい。
 <12>上記<1>から<11>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記基体は、複数の樹脂繊維を含み、前記樹脂繊維の平均直径は、0.1μm以上20μm以下であってもよい。
 平均直径が0.1μm以上の樹脂繊維は、隔膜に突き刺さりにくい。平均直径が20μm以下の樹脂繊維は、隔膜に引っ掛かり難い。そのため、本開示の電池セルでは、多孔質体が隔膜に接触しても、隔膜が損傷しにくい。したがって、正極電解液と負極電解液が混合されにくく、電池が短絡しにくい。
 <13>上記<1>から<12>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記基体の空孔率は、60%以上99%以下であってもよい。
 空孔率が60%以上である基体を含む多孔質体は、電池セル内の電解液の流れを阻害しにくい。そのため、多孔質体が配置されても、電池セルのセル抵抗率が上昇しにくい。空孔率が99%以下である基体は機械的強度に優れる。そのため、隔膜と電極との間で多孔質体が圧縮されても、隔膜と電極が接触しにくい。
 <14>上記<1>から<13>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記基体の目付量は、2g/m以上40g/m以下であってもよい。
 目付量が2g/m以上の基体を含む多孔質体では、電極と隔膜とが接触しにくく、隔膜が損傷しにくい。目付量が40g/m以下の基体を含む多孔質体は、電池セル内の電解液の流れを阻害しにくい。
 <15>上記<1>から<14>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記多孔質体の厚さは、0.5μm以上200μm以下であってもよい。
 厚さが0.5μm以上の多孔質体では、電極と隔膜とが接触しにくいため、隔膜が損傷しにくい。厚さが200μm以下の多孔質体では、電池セルのセル抵抗率が増加しにくく、電池セル内の電解液の流れが阻害されにくい。
 <16>上記<1>から<15>のいずれかに記載される電池セルにおいて、前記正極電極および前記負極電極の少なくとも一方は、複数の炭素繊維を有する繊維集合体であってもよい。前記繊維集合体は、不織布、織布、またはペーパーであってもよい。
 炭素繊維は導電性に優れる上、電解液に対する耐性に優れる。
 <17>本開示の一態様に係るレドックスフロー電池システムは、上記<1>から<16>のいずれかに記載の電池セルと、前記電池セルに正極電解液を循環させる第一循環機構と、前記電池セルに負極電解液を循環させる第二循環機構と、を備える。前記正極電解液は、正極活物質としてバナジウムイオンを含む。前記負極電解液は、負極活物質としてバナジウムイオンを含む。
 本開示のレドックスフロー電池システムは上記電池セルを備えるため、電流効率が向上する。本開示のレドックスフロー電池システムによれば、正極電解液と負極電解液とを混合する頻度を低下させることができる。
<本開示の実施形態の詳細>
 以下、本開示の実施形態に係る電池セルおよびレドックスフロー電池システムの具体例を図面に基づいて説明する。実施形態では、レドックスフロー電池をRF電池と表記する。図中の同一符号は同一または相当部分を示す。図面が示す部材の大きさは、説明を明確にする目的で表現されており、必ずしも実際の大きさを表していない。本発明はこれらの例示に限定されるものではなく、請求の範囲によって示され、請求の範囲と均等の意味および範囲内でのすべての変更が含まれることが意図される。
<実施形態>
 〔RF電池システム〕
 図1に示されるRF電池システム1は、電池セル10と第一循環機構10Pと第二循環機構10Nとを備える。電池セル10は、正極電極14と、負極電極15と、隔膜11と、多孔質体17とを有する。隔膜11は、正極電極14と負極電極15との間に配置されている。第一循環機構10Pと第二循環機構10Nとは、電池セル10に電解液を循環させる。RF電池システム1の特徴の一つは、多孔質体17が、正極電極14と隔膜11との間、負極電極15と隔膜11との間、または正極電極14と隔膜11との間および負極電極15と隔膜11との間のそれぞれ、に配置されていることである。図1では、正極電極14と隔膜11との間および負極電極15と隔膜11との間のそれぞれに多孔質体17が配置されている。
 [RF電池システムの概要]
 図1に示すRF電池システム1は、電力を充放電する。充電電力は、発電部510で発電された電力である。放電電力は、負荷530に供給される。発電部510は、例えば、太陽光発電装置、風力発電装置、または一般の発電所に備わるその他の発電装置である。負荷530は、例えば、電力の需要家である。代表的には、RF電池システム1は交流/直流変換器500に接続され、交流/直流変換器500は変電設備520に接続され、変電設備520は発電部510および負荷530に接続される。図1における交流/直流変換器500と変電設備520との間の実線矢印は充電を意味し、破線矢印は放電を意味する。RF電池システム1は、例えば、負荷平準化、瞬時電圧低下補償、または自然エネルギー発電の出力平滑化に利用される。自然エネルギー発電は、例えば、大量導入が進められている太陽光発電または風力発電である。RF電池システム1は、非常用電源としても使用できる。RF電池システム1は、正極電解液および負極電解液を使用する。正極電解液および負極電解液は、代表的には、酸化還元により価数が変化する金属イオンを活物質イオンとして含有する。RF電池システム1の充放電は、正極電解液に含まれる活物質イオンの酸化還元電位と負極電解液に含まれる活物質イオンの酸化還元電位との差を利用して行われる。
 [RF電池の基本構成]
 RF電池システム1は、電池セル10を備える。電池セル10は、正極セルと負極セルとを備える。正極セルと負極セルとは、後述する隔膜11で分離されている。
 正極セルには、後述する正極電極14が内蔵されている。正極セルには、第一循環機構10Pによって正極電解液が循環される。第一循環機構10Pは、正極電解液タンク18と、供給管20と、排出管22と、ポンプ24とを備える。正極電解液タンク18は、正極電解液を貯留する。供給管20と排出管22には、正極電解液が流通する。供給管20は、正極電解液タンク18と正極セルとを接続する。排出管22は、正極セルと正極電解液タンク18とを接続する。ポンプ24は、正極電解液タンク18内の正極電解液を圧送する。ポンプ24は、供給管20の途中に設けられている。
 負極セルには、後述する負極電極15が内蔵されている。負極セルには、第二循環機構10Nによって負極電解液が循環される。第二循環機構10Nは、負極電解液タンク19と、供給管21と、排出管23と、ポンプ25とを備える。負極電解液タンク19は、負極電解液を貯留する。供給管21と排出管23には、負極電解液が流通する。供給管21は、負極電解液タンク19と負極セルとを接続する。排出管23は、負極セルと負極電解液タンク19とを接続する。ポンプ25は、負極電解液タンク19内の負極電解液を圧送する。ポンプ25は、供給管21の途中に設けられている。
 RF電池システム1の運転時、ポンプ24およびポンプ25によって圧送された正極電解液および負極電解液は次のように流通する。正極電解液は、供給管20を流通して正極電解液タンク18から正極セルに供給される。正極電解液は、排出管22を流通して正極セルから正極電解液タンク18に排出される。負極電解液は、供給管21を流通して負極電解液タンク19から負極セルに供給される。負極電解液は、排出管23を流通して負極セルから負極電解液タンク19に排出される。充放電が行われない待機時、ポンプ24およびポンプ25は停止し、正極電解液および負極電解液は流通しない。
 電池セル10は通常、セルスタック200の内部に設けられる。セルスタック200は、複数の電池セル10が積層された積層体と、2枚のエンドプレート220と、締付機構230とを備える。本実施形態の積層体では、セルフレーム16、正極電極14、多孔質体17、隔膜11、多孔質体17、および負極電極15が、この順番で積層されている。2枚のエンドプレート220は、積層体をその外側から挟み込む。締付機構230は、両エンドプレート220を締め付ける。セルスタック200は、複数のサブセルスタックを備えてもよい。各サブセルスタックの主体は上記積層体である。
 セルフレーム16は、双極板161と枠体162とを備える。セルフレーム16は、正極電極14または負極電極15を配置する凹部を備える。凹部は、双極板161の表面と枠体162の内周面とで形成される。隣接する二つのセルフレーム16の双極板161の間に一つの電池セル10が配置されている。正極セルと隣の電池セル10の負極セルの間に、一つの双極板161が配置されている。双極板161と枠体162とは、公知の構成であってもよい。枠体162と枠体162の間には、環状のシール部材167が配置されている。シール部材167によって、電池セル10から電解液が漏洩しにくくなる。
 正極電解液に含まれる正極活物質イオンは、例えば、バナジウムイオン、マンガンイオン、鉄イオン、ポリ酸、キノン誘導体、アミン、有機化合物、および有機金属錯体からなる群より選択される1種以上である。負極電解液に含まれる負極活物質イオンは、例えば、バナジウムイオン、チタンイオン、クロムイオン、ポリ酸、キノン誘導体、アミン、および有機金属錯体からなる群より選択される1種以上である。活物質イオンの価数変化反応に伴って充電および放電が行われる。電解液の溶媒は、例えば、硫酸、リン酸、硝酸、および塩酸からなる群より選択される1種以上の酸または酸塩を含む水溶液である。
 正極活物質イオンおよび負極活物質イオンがバナジウム(V)イオンである場合、正極活物質イオンを構成するVイオンは、V4+およびV5+である。充電時にV4+が酸化され、V5+になる。放電時にV5+が還元され、V4+になる。負極活物質は、V2+およびV3+である。充電時にV3+が還元され、V2+になる。放電時にV2+が酸化され、V3+になる。隔膜11はプロトン透過性を有する。プロトンが隔膜11を透過することに加えて、金属イオン、例えば陽イオンであるVイオン、が隔膜11を透過することがある。隔膜11がプロトン透過性を有する場合、V2+以外のVイオンに比べてV2+が隔膜11を透過し易い。正極活物質イオンが隔膜11を通って負極電解液に移動した場合、または負極活物質イオンが隔膜11を通って正極電解液に移動した場合、正極電解液と負極電解液における活物質イオンの量に差が生じることがある。そのため電池容量が低下することがある。
 RF電池システム1は多孔質体17を備えるので、活物質イオンが正極電解液と負極電解液の間を移動しにくい。以下、RF電池システム1、主として多孔質体17、を説明する。
 [多孔質体]
 図2に示されるように、電池セル10では、正極電極14、多孔質体17、隔膜11、多孔質体17、および負極電極15が、この順で接するように配置されている。多孔質体17は、隔膜11を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減させる。具体的には、負極セルに配置される多孔質体17は、隔膜11を透過して負極セルから正極セルに向かう負極活物質イオンの量を低減させる。正極セルに配置された多孔質体17は、隔膜11を透過して正極セルから負極セルに向かう正極活物質イオンの量を低減させる。このような効果は、多孔質体17によってもたらされると考えられる。
 図3に示されるように、多孔質体17は、隔膜11と負極電極15との間にのみ配置されていてもよい。例えば正極活物質イオンと負極活物質イオンとがVイオンである場合、負極活物質イオンが正極活物質イオンよりも隔膜11を透過し易い。負極セルにのみ多孔質体17が配置され、正極セルには多孔質体17が配置されていなくてもよい。以降の説明では、正極電極14と負極電極15とを区別せず、単に電極100と呼ぶ場合がある。
 多孔質体17は、電極100とは独立した部材である。多孔質体17の平面形状の一例は、矩形である。平面形状とは、多孔質体17の第一面または第二面を平面視したときの第一面または第二面の輪郭形状である。第一面は、電極100に対向する面である。第二面は、隔膜11に対向する面である。ここでの矩形は、正方形を含む。矩形の意味は、電極100の平面形状および隔膜11の平面形状に関しても同じである。
 多孔質体17が配置されると、電極100が隔膜11に接触しにくい。電極100と隔膜11が接触しにくければ、隔膜11が損傷しにくい。したがって、正極電解液と負極電解液とが混合されにくく、電池が短絡しにくい。このため、高い電流効率が維持される。
 多孔質体17の厚さは、例えば、0.1μm以上200μm以下である。多孔質体17の厚さは、圧縮された状態の多孔質体17の厚さである。厚さが0.1μm以上の多孔質体17は、隔膜11を透過する活物質イオンを低減できると共に、電極100と隔膜11との接触に伴う隔膜11の損傷を減らすことができる。厚さが200μm以下の多孔質体17は、電池セル10内の電解液の流れを阻害しにくい。多孔質体17の厚さは、5μm以上200μm以下でもよく、30μm以上200μm以下でもよく、または50μm以上150μm以下でもよい。
 多孔質体17は、図4に示すように、絶縁性材料、例えば絶縁性樹脂、によって構成された多孔質の基体171と、基体171の少なくとも一部に形成された被覆部172とを備える。
 (基体)
 基体171は、絶縁性材料によって構成されている。基体171は、電解液が流通可能な複数の空孔を有する。基体171は、例えば、樹脂繊維を含む繊維集合体、樹脂の発泡体、または樹脂の網目状部材である。繊維集合体は、例えば、不織布または織布である。不織布では独立した樹脂繊維が交絡している。織布では樹脂繊維の縦糸と横糸とが交互に織り合わされている。樹脂は、例えば、ポリエチレン(polyethylene)、ポリプロピレン(polypropylene)、エチレン-αオレフィン共重合体、ビニル共重合体樹脂、エンジニアリングプラスチック、スーパーエンジニアリング系樹脂、またはハロゲン含有樹脂である。エンジニアリングプラスチックまたはスーパーエンジニアリング系樹脂は、例えば、ポリフェニレンスルフィド(polyphenylene sulfide:PPS)、またはポリスチレン(polystyrene)である。ハロゲン含有樹脂は、例えば、ポリテトラフルオロエチレン(polytetrafluoroethylene)、ポリ塩化ビニル(polyvinyl chloride)、またはポリフッ化ビニリデン(polyvinylidene fluoride)である。これらの樹脂は、電解液に対する耐性に優れるため、基体171が損傷しにくい。基体171の材質は、赤外吸光分光法、ラマン分光分析法、熱分解ガスクロマトグラフィー質量分析法、飛行時間型二次イオン質量分析法、および核磁気共鳴分析の少なくとも1つの分析法を用いて、分子構造を特定することによって判別できる。
 基体171は、複数の樹脂繊維171aを含む繊維集合体によって構成されている。基体171は、樹脂繊維171aに囲まれることで形成された複数の空孔を有する。樹脂繊維171aの平均直径が大きいほど、電池セル10内の電解液の流れを阻害しにくい多孔質体17を形成しやすい。樹脂繊維171aの平均直径は、例えば、0.1μm以上である。樹脂繊維171aの平均直径は、0.5μm以上でもよく、1μm以上でもよく、2μm以上でもよく、または5μm以上でもよい。
 樹脂繊維171aの平均直径は、例えば、20μm以下である。樹脂繊維171aの平均直径が小さいほど、多孔質体17が隔膜11に接触しても、隔膜11が損傷しにくい。平均直径が20μm以下の樹脂繊維171aは低剛性であるため、多孔質体17が隔膜11に接触しても、隔膜11が損傷しにくい。樹脂繊維171aの平均直径は、18μm以下でもよく、または15μm以下でもよい。
 樹脂繊維171aの平均直径は、0.1μm以上20μm以下であってもよく、0.5μm以上18μm以下であってもよく、または1μm以上15μm以下であってもよい。
 基体171を構成する樹脂繊維171aは、電極100を構成する炭素繊維111a(図5参照)よりも柔らかくてもよい。樹脂繊維171aで構成された基体171は、柔軟性に優れる。したがって、多孔質体17が隔膜11に接触しても、隔膜11は損傷しにくい。
 樹脂繊維171aの平均直径は、次のようにして求められる。多孔質体17を切断して樹脂繊維171aの断面を露出させる。多孔質体17を、多孔質体17の電極に対向する面に垂直な面に沿って切断する。断面を顕微鏡またはマイクロスコープで拡大する。拡大倍率は、例えば、1000倍である。5本以上の樹脂繊維171aについて、各樹脂繊維171aの直径を求める。上記直径は、樹脂繊維171aの断面の面積と同じ面積を有する円の直径である。求めた全ての直径の平均が、樹脂繊維171aの平均直径である。
 基体171は、樹脂以外の絶縁性材料によって構成されていてもよい。樹脂以外の絶縁性材料は、例えば、セラミックスおよびガラスなどの無機材料である。基体171は、セラミックス繊維またはガラス繊維を含む不織布であってもよい。
 基体171の空孔率は、例えば、60%以上99%以下である。本明細書における基体171の空孔率は、圧縮されていない基体171の空孔率である。空孔率が60%以上である基体171で形成された多孔質体17では、電池セル10内の電解液の流れが阻害されにくい。そのため、多孔質体17が配置された電池セル10のセル抵抗率は上昇しにくい。空孔率が99%以下である基体171は機械的強度に優れる。そのため、隔膜11と電極100との間で多孔質体17が圧縮されても、隔膜11と電極100とは接触しにくい。基体171の空孔率は、70%以上95%以下でもよく、または75%以上90%以下でもよい。多孔質体17の空孔率は、電極100の空孔率以下でもよく、または電極100の空孔率より大きくてもよい。基体171の空孔率が電極100の空孔率以下の場合、多孔質体17が配置されていることにより、電極100が隔膜11に接触しにくく、隔膜11が損傷しにくい。基体171の空孔率が電極100の空孔率よりも大きくても、多孔質体17の厚さが十分であれば、電極100が隔膜11に接触しにくく、隔膜11が損傷しにくい。
 溶剤を用いて基体171から被覆部172を除去した後、基体171の体積と質量と真密度を測定することによって、基体171の空孔率を求めることができる。基体171の真密度は、基体171の材質を特定することで求められる。多孔質体17を構成する基体171の空孔率は、製造過程で用意した基体171の空孔率と実質的に同じであることが多い。
 基体171の目付量は、例えば、2g/m以上40g/m以下である。目付量が2g/m以上の基体171は、適量の被覆部172を保持可能である。このため、隔膜11を透過する活物質イオンが減少し、電極100と隔膜11との接触に伴う隔膜11の損傷が低減する。目付量が40g/m以下の基体171で形成された多孔質体17では、電池セル10のセル抵抗率が増大しにくく、電池セル10内の電解液の流れが阻害されにくい。基体171の目付量は、5g/m以上40g/m以下でもよく、8g/m以上35g/m以下でもよく、または10g/m以上30g/m以下でもよい。
 (被覆部)
 被覆部172は、基体171の骨格の表面の少なくとも一部を覆うように形成されている。被覆部172が形成されると、基体171の空孔の体積が小さくなり得る。被覆部172には、多孔質体17に電解液が流通可能なように、空孔が形成されていてもよい。電解液が多孔質体17を流通できる限り、多孔質体17は被覆部172によって閉塞された空孔を含んでもよい。
 被覆部172は、樹脂繊維171aの表面の少なくとも一部に形成されている。樹脂繊維171aの表面全体に被覆部172が形成されていてもよい。その場合、樹脂繊維171aは被覆部172でコーティングされている。
 被覆部172はイオン交換材料を含む。イオン交換材料には、陰イオン交換材料と陽イオン交換材料とがある。被覆部172は、単一のイオン交換材料を含んでいてもよく、または複数の異なるイオン交換材料を含んでいてもよい。被覆部172は、陽イオン交換材料を含まず、陰イオン交換材料のみを含んでいてもよい。被覆部172は、陰イオン交換材料を含まず、陽イオン交換材料のみを含んでいてもよい。被覆部172は、陰イオン交換材料と陽イオン交換材料の両方を含んでいてもよい。活物質イオンが金属イオンのような陽イオンである場合、被覆部172は、陰イオン交換材料またはイオン選択性に優れる陽イオン交換材料を含んでもよい。イオン選択性に優れる陽イオン交換材料は、電池としての電気的中性を保つためのイオン、例えばプロトン、を交換対象として選択し、活物質イオンを選択しない。したがって、プロトンはイオン選択性に優れる陽イオン交換材料を含む多孔質体17を透過し、活物質イオンはイオン選択性に優れる陽イオン交換材料を含む多孔質体17を透過しにくい。
 陰イオン交換材料は、例えば、1級から3級アミノ基を含む材料、4級アンモニウム基を含む材料、または窒素を有する複素環式分子を含む材料である。被覆部172が複数の陰イオン交換材料を含む場合、被覆部172は上記の三つの材料からなる群から選択される1つ以上の材料を含んでもよい。
 1級から3級アミノ基を含む材料は、例えば、ポリエチレンイミン(polyethylenimine)もしくはその塩、ポリアニリン(polyaniline)もしくはその塩、ポリアリルアミン(polyallylamine)もしくはその塩、ポリスチレン系3級アミン、またはポリフェノール(polyphenol)系3級アミンである。
 4級アンモニウム基を含む材料は、例えば、ジアリルジメチルアンモニウムクロリド(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)重合体、ジアリルアミン(diallylamine)塩酸塩・二酸化硫黄共重合体、テトラブチルアンモニウム(tetrabutylammonium)、ベンジルトリエチルアンモニウム(benzyltriethylammonium)、ポリスチレン(polystyrene)系4級アンモニウム、またはベンゼトニウム(benzethonium)である。
 窒素を含有する複素環式分子を含む材料は、例えば、ポリピロール(polypyrrole)もしくはその塩、ジアリルアミン(diallylamine)重合体もしくはその塩、ポリ(4-ビニルピリジン)(poly(4-vinylpyridine))もしくはその塩、ビニルピリジン/ジビニルベンゼン共重合体もしくはその塩、ビニルピリジン/スチレン共重合体もしくはその塩、ポリベンゾイミダゾール(polybenzimidazole)もしくはその塩、ポリジアリルジメチルアンモニウム(poly(diallyldimethylammonium))もしくはその塩、またはセチルピリジニウム(cetylpyridinium)である。
 陰イオン交換材料は、炭化水素系イオン交換材料を含んでいてもよい。陰イオン交換材料は、上記以外の公知の陰イオン交換樹脂でもよい。
 陽イオン交換材料は、例えば、スルホン酸基を含有する材料、カルボン酸基を含む材料、またはリン酸基を含む材料である。被覆部172が複数の陽イオン交換材料を含む場合、上記の三つの材料からなる群から選択される1つ以上の材料を含んでもよい。スルホン酸基を含有する材料は、例えば、スルホン化ポリマー(sulfonated polymer)、パーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸(perfluorocarbonsulfonic acid)樹脂、ポリスチレンスルホン酸(polystyrene sulfonic acid)樹脂、スルホン化ポリエーテルスルホン(sulfonated polyether sulfone)、スルホン化ポリエーテルエーテルケトン(sulfonated polyetheretherketone)、スルホン化ポリイミド(sulfonated polyimide)、スルホン化ポリエーテル(sulfonated polyether)、スルホン化ポリベンゾイミダゾール(sulfonated polybenzimidazole)、またはスルホン化ポリアリーレン(sulfonated polyarylene)である。カルボン酸基を含む材料は、例えば、メタクリル酸系弱酸性陽イオン交換樹脂、またはアクリル酸系弱酸性陽イオン交換樹脂である。リン酸基を含む材料は、例えばリン酸エステルポリマー、またはポリリン酸である。陽イオン交換材料は炭化水素系イオン交換材料を含んでいてもよい。
 イオン交換材料が、上述の陰イオン交換材料および陽イオン交換材料からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種であれば、電池セル10において隔膜11を透過する活物質イオンの量を低減することができる。
 被覆部172の質量は、製造された多孔質体17の質量から、基体171の質量を減ずることで求められる。
 被覆部172の形成方法は、例えば、以下の形成方法である。イオン交換材料を含む原料液を作製する。その原料液を基体171に塗布する、あるいは原料液に基体171を浸漬する。原料液に含まれるイオン交換材料の量は、多孔質体17における被覆部172の割合が適切になるように調整される。原料液に含まれるイオン交換材料は、原料液中に分散した粒子状であってもよく、または原料液に溶解していてもよい。原料液には架橋剤が含まれていてもよい。原料液の種類によっては、基体171に前処理を行ってもよい。前処理は、例えば、コロナ処理、プラズマ処理、またはオゾン処理である。上記前処理によって、基体171と被覆部172との密着性を向上できる場合がある。樹脂繊維171aの表面に原料液が付着している基体171を乾燥し、原料液の液成分を蒸発させることで、被覆部172が形成される。乾燥は、樹脂繊維171aの融点以下の温度の雰囲気で実施してもよい。原料液に架橋剤が含まれていれば、架橋のための処理、例えば熱処理を行うことでイオン交換材料が架橋される。イオン交換材料が架橋されると、被覆部172が樹脂繊維171aの表面から剥離しにくくなる。
 [正極電極・負極電極]
 正極電極14の構成は、負極電極15の構成と同じでもよく、または異なっていてもよい。電極100の平面形状の一例は、矩形である。
 電極100は、多孔質材料で構成される。本実施形態では、多孔質材料は、図5に示すように、繊維集合体111である。繊維集合体111は、複数の炭素繊維111aを有する。炭素繊維111aは導電性を有する。繊維集合体111では、炭素繊維111a同士の接点を多くし易い。そのため、繊維集合体111で構成された電極100では、導電性が向上し易い。繊維集合体111では、空孔が形成され易い。そのため、繊維集合体111で構成される電極100では、電解液の流通性が向上し易い。繊維集合体111の形態は、例えば、不織布、織布、またはペーパーである。不織布では、独立した炭素繊維111aが交絡している。織布では、炭素繊維111aの縦糸と横糸とが交互に織り合わされている。ペーパーは、例えば、複数の炭素繊維111aと、炭素繊維111aを結着するバインダーとを有するカーボンペーパーである。不織布には、フェルト、スパンレース、およびマリフリースが含まれる。炭素繊維111aには公知の炭素繊維を利用できる。
 [隔膜]
 隔膜11は、正極電極14と負極電極15との間に配置されている。隔膜11は、正極セルと負極セルとを区画する。隔膜11は、プロトン透過性、すなわち水素イオン透過性を有する。隔膜11には、公知の隔膜を利用できる。隔膜11の平面形状の一例は、矩形である。
 隔膜11の厚さは、例えば、60μm以下である。厚さが60μm以下の隔膜11は、セル抵抗率を低減し易い。この理由は、このような隔膜11は、水素イオンを透過させ易いからである。隔膜11の厚さは、40μm以下でもよく、または30μm以下でもよい。隔膜11の厚さの下限は、例えば、5μmである。厚さが5μm以上の隔膜11は損傷し難い。隔膜11の厚さは、8μm以上でもよく、または10μm以上でもよい。隔膜11の厚さは、例えば、5μm以上60μm以下、8μm以上40μm以下、または10μm以上30μm以下である。
 <試験例>
 試験例では、多孔質体がRF電池システム1の電池性能に及ぼす影響を調べた。具体的には、正極電極14と負極電極15とを一つずつ備える単セル電池を作製し、その単セル電池のセル抵抗率と電流効率を測定した。
 ≪試料No.1から試料No.12≫
 試料No.1から試料No.12の単セル電池それぞれにおいて、第一のセルフレーム16、正極電極14、多孔質体17、隔膜11、多孔質体17、負極電極15、および第二のセルフレーム16が順に接触するように積層された。これらの試料では、正極セルと負極セルのそれぞれに多孔質体17が配置された。つまり、正極電極14と隔膜11との間および負極電極15と隔膜11との間のそれぞれに、多孔質体17が配置された。電池セル10の主要構成は以下の通りである。
・隔膜11:パーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸樹脂製のプロトン透過性を有する隔膜
・隔膜11の厚さ:20μm
・圧縮されていない多孔質体17の厚さ:80μm
・基体171:PPS樹脂製の不織布
・圧縮されていない基体171の空孔率:81%
・基体171の目付量:20g/m
・被覆部172の形成方法:イオン交換材料を含む原料液を基体171に塗布した後、乾燥させる塗布法
・被覆部172の材質:表1に示す。
 表1中の「両極」は、正極セルと負極セルのそれぞれに、つまり正極電極14と隔膜11との間および負極電極15と隔膜11との間のそれぞれに、多孔質体17が配置されたことを意味する。「負極」は、負極セルにのみ、つまり負極電極15と隔膜11との間にのみ、多孔質体17が配置されたことを意味する。
 表1中の「pC系」は陰イオン交換材料を意味し、「pA系」は陽イオン交換材料を意味する。試料No.6における「ポリ(4-スチレンスルホン酸ナトリウム)」は、ポリスチレンスルホン酸樹脂の一種である。また、「+」は、複数種のイオン交換材料が順次形成されたことを意味する。例えば、「ポリジアリルジメチルアンモニウム+パーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸樹脂」は、基体171にポリジアリルジメチルアンモニウムを塗布した後にパーフルオロカーボンスルホン酸樹脂を塗布することで被覆部172が形成されたことを意味する。
 ≪試料No.13≫
 試料No.13の単セル電池では、第一のセルフレーム16、正極電極14、隔膜11、多孔質体17、負極電極15、および第二のセルフレーム16が順に接触するように積層された。試料No.13の単セル電池では、負極セルにのみ多孔質体17が配置された。つまり、負極電極15と隔膜11との間にのみ多孔質体17が配置された。試料No.13の単セル電池の構成は、負極セルにのみ多孔質体17が配置されたこと以外、試料No.2の単セル電池の構成と同じであった。
 ≪試料No.101≫
 試料No.101の単セル電池では、被覆部172を有さない多孔質体が、正極セルおよび負極セルのそれぞれに配置された。つまり、被覆部172を有さない多孔質体が、正極電極14と隔膜11との間および負極電極15と隔膜11との間のそれぞれに配置された。被覆部172を有さない多孔質体は、基体171のみからなる多孔質体である。試料No.101の単セル電池の構成は、被覆部172を有さないこと以外、試料No.1から試料No.12の単セル電池の構成と同じであった。
 ≪試料No.102≫
 試料No.102の単セル電池では、第一のセルフレーム16、正極電極14、隔膜11、負極電極15、および第二のセルフレーム16が順に接触するように積層された。試料No.102の単セル電池の構成は、多孔質体17を備えないこと以外、試料No.1から試料No.13の単セル電池の構成と同じであった。
 ≪電池特性の試験≫
 正極電解液および負極電解液の各々には、硫酸バナジウム水溶液を用いた。バナジウムの濃度は1.7mol/Lであった。バナジウムイオンは活物質イオンとして働く。充放電試験は、電流密度が70mA/cmの定電流で行い、電池電圧が予め設定した切り替え電圧に達したら、充電と放電とを切り替えた。この電池特性の試験では充電および放電を5サイクル行った。
 試験によって得られたデータに基づいて、各試料のセル抵抗率(Ω・cm)および電流効率(%)を求めた。結果を表1に示す。
 セル抵抗率は、セル抵抗値に電極100の面積を掛けることにより算出した。セル抵抗値は、充電の中間電圧と放電の中間電圧との差を2で割り、その値をさらに電流値で割った値である。「中間電圧」とは、充電または放電を開始してから、充電または放電の開始から終了までの時間の1/2の時間が経過した時点における電圧値である。
 電流効率は、5サイクル目の充電時間に対する放電時間の割合である。具体的には、電流効率は、(放電時間の合計/充電時間の合計)×100である。
 試料No.1から試料No.13と、試料No.101とを比較する。多孔質体にイオン交換材料が含まれていることにより、電流効率が改善された。試料No.1から試料No.3、試料No.6および試料No.7の電流効率は98%以上であった。試料No.1から試料No.3では、多孔質体に特定の陰イオン交換材料のみが含まれていた。試料No.6および試料No.7では、多孔質体に陽イオン交換材料と陰イオン交換材料の両方が含まれていた。したがって、隔膜を透過する活物質イオンの量が低減したことによって、電流効率が改善されたと推察される。
 試料No.1から試料No.12と、試料No.102とを比較する。正極セルおよび負極セルのそれぞれに多孔質体を配置しても、セル抵抗率の増加は0.1Ω・cm以下であった。多孔質体が電解液の流れを阻害しないため、多孔質体はセル抵抗率を顕著に増加させないと推察される。
 試料No.13の電流効率は、試料No.1から試料No.12の電流効率よりも低かった。その理由は、試料No.13では、正極電極と隔膜との間に多孔質体が存在しないため、隔膜の一部に損傷が発生したからであると考えられる。隔膜の一部に損傷があったと考えられるものの、試料No.13の電流効率は、試料No.101の電流効率よりも高かった。負極セルにのみ多孔質体が配置されていても、隔膜11を厚くする、または正極電極14を柔らかい材質によって構成することにより、電流効率は改善すると推察される。ただし、隔膜を厚くすると、セル抵抗率は増加すると考えられる。

Claims (17)

  1.  正極電極と、負極電極と、隔膜と、多孔質体と、を備え、
     前記多孔質体は、前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間、前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間、または前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間および前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間のそれぞれ、に配置され、
     前記多孔質体は、絶縁性材料によって構成された多孔質の基体と、前記基体の少なくとも一部に形成された被覆部と、を備え、
     前記被覆部は、陽イオン交換材料および陰イオン交換材料の少なくとも一方を含む、
     電池セル。
  2.  前記多孔質体は、前記正極電極と前記隔膜との間および前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間のそれぞれに配置されている、請求項1に記載の電池セル。
  3.  前記多孔質体は、前記負極電極と前記隔膜との間にのみ配置されている、請求項1に記載の電池セル。
  4.  前記陰イオン交換材料は、1級から3級アミノ基を含む材料、4級アンモニウム基を含む材料、および窒素を有する複素環式分子を含む材料からなる群から選択される1つ以上の材料である、請求項1から請求項3のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  5.  前記被覆部は、前記陽イオン交換材料および前記陰イオン交換材料の両方を含む、請求項1から請求項4のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  6.  前記被覆部は、前記陽イオン交換材料を含まず、前記陰イオン交換材料のみを含む、請求項1から請求項4のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  7.  前記陽イオン交換材料は、スルホン酸基を含む材料、カルボン酸基を含む材料、およびリン酸基を含む材料からなる群から選択される1つ以上の材料である、請求項1から請求項5のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  8.  前記陽イオン交換材料および前記陰イオン交換材料の少なくとも一方は、炭化水素系イオン交換材料を含む、請求項1から請求項7のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  9.  前記絶縁性材料は、ポリエチレン、ポリプロピレン、エチレン-αオレフィン共重合体、ビニル共重合体樹脂、エンジニアリングプラスチック、スーパーエンジニアリング系樹脂、またはハロゲン含有樹脂である、請求項1から請求項8のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  10.  前記隔膜の厚さは、60μm以下である、請求項1から請求項9のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  11.  前記隔膜の厚さは、5μm以上である、請求項10に記載の電池セル。
  12.  前記基体は、複数の樹脂繊維を含み、
     前記樹脂繊維の平均直径は、0.1μm以上20μm以下である、請求項1から請求項11のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  13.  前記基体の空孔率は、60%以上99%以下である、請求項1から請求項12のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  14.  前記基体の目付量は、2g/m以上40g/m以下である、請求項1から請求項13のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  15.  前記多孔質体の厚さは、0.5μm以上200μm以下である、請求項1から請求項14のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  16.  前記正極電極および前記負極電極の少なくとも一方は、複数の炭素繊維を有する繊維集合体であり、
     前記繊維集合体は、不織布、織布、またはペーパーである、請求項1から請求項15のいずれか1項に記載の電池セル。
  17.  請求項1から請求項16のいずれか1項に記載の電池セルと、
     前記電池セルに正極電解液を循環させる第一循環機構と、
     前記電池セルに負極電解液を循環させる第二循環機構と、を備え、
     前記正極電解液は、正極活物質としてバナジウムイオンを含み、
     前記負極電解液は、負極活物質としてバナジウムイオンを含む、
     レドックスフロー電池システム。
