Definitions
- This invention relates to a portable dispensing device to dispense or unload material from a flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) bag in a controlled manner.
- FIBC flexible Intermediate bulk container
- a flexible Intermediate bulk container commonly referred to as a “FIBC Bag” is a large bag made from woven plastic. To quickly and completely empty the contents of the bag, it is typically lifted and its base is cut or torn manually. This method does not allow partial unloading of the FIBC bag and also flow of the material cannot be controlled.
- a special kind of dispensing device is used. This device pierces the FIBC from below with its tip, allowing the bulk material to be emptied out of the FIBC Bag.
- Patent FR2895728A3 discloses a device designed for use with big bags or other flexible bulk material containers for fertilizer. This is designed to pierce the woven plastics from below with its tip, so that the bulk material can be emptied out of the container through its openings. It also has a closing mechanism made with upper and lower plates pivoted about a screw or bolt that enables the emptying process 2 to be started and stopped, thereby allowing for control over the flow of material.
- US10589887B2 describes some changes in the FR2895728A3 to mitigate the disadvantages of mounting the lower plate on the upper plate by a downward protruding bolt and lack of clamping support for the lower plate.
- both the device are same and provides no technical advantage for the production process and for its use as a single device in unloading multiple type of FIBC Bags.
- FIBC bags In actual practice there are several types of FIBC bags being used. The most generalized categories being Single Use FIBC bags and Reusable FIBC Bags.
- Reusable FIBC bags has a flexible spout on its bottom surface as an integral part of its body to unload the material from the bag.
- the normal dispensing devices such as the prior art device has no inbuilt feature to make a single device suitable for unloading reusable FIBC bags along with the single use FIBC bags. There are other number of drawbacks that could reduce its performance and lifespan.
- the main object of the present invention is to improve portable controlled dispensing device for Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container or FIBC Bags that offers a myriad of benefits as compared to the prior art invention.
- the improved invention of the portable controlled dispensing device utilizes a hollow cylindrical body with twelve distinct openings.
- openings From these openings, four of them are large openings made with the four strut strips that starts from the inner surface of the hollow cylindrical body and merge in a sharp tip. These larger four openings allow material to flow from the cavity of FIBC bag into the hollow of the cylinder axially.
- the other four openings are flow through windows on the outer surface of the hollow cylinder that allows flow of material from FIBC bag to cylinder’s hollow part radially.
- the last four openings are slots for the installation of the flexible hooks that protrude outwards from the main body.
- These flexible hooks are mounted on the internal surface of the hollow cylindrical body and protrude outwards through the said slots in a manner that when the cylinder is penetrated inside of a flexible intermediate bulk container bag or a FIBC bag the flexible hooks will regain their original shape after penetration and act like hooks to fix the cylinder inside the bag.
- the upper surface of the strips is made smooth and glossy to minimize friction during the penetration inside FIBC bag while the bottom surface is made rough to improve better 4 grip with the fabric of FIBC bag after penetration.
- the cylinder has a bottom main opening which merges into filleted collar of the hollow cylindrical body which also makes the base of the hollow cylindrical body.
- the device also has a filleted gate with nearly same size of the filleted collar to match its periphery when put against each other.
- This filleted gate is mounted on the collar through a set of a nut-bolt so that it makes it a pivot joint to operate the gate about the pivot point to completely close or open the main opening of the hollow cylindrical body.
- the improved invention includes four wedges on the outer peripheral surface of the hollow cylindrical body 90 degrees apart from each other located right above the four slots of the flexible hooks.
- top wedges are so designed that while the cylinder is being penetrated inside of a flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) bag they would protect the flexible hook by acting as a protective barrier and avoiding direct contact of the FIBC bag with the flexible hook at the corner/edge from where the flexible hooks protrude outwards. This will also reduce the fatigue load directly acting upon the flexible hooks thus expanding its life.
- FIBC flexible intermediate bulk container
- top wedges are shaped so that a locking ring with a clamp can be attached on these wedges and the shape of the profile of this locking ring will match these wedges thus the fabric of the spout will be sandwiched between the wedges and the lock ring thus fixing the hollow cylindrical dispensing 5 device to the flexible unloading spout of the reusable FIBC bag.
- This way the same device can be used to dispense or unload material from all types of Flexible intermediate bulk container bags or FIBC bags i.e.
- a single unit can be used to unload material from single use FIBC bag by penetration method and the same device can be used to unload material from reusable FIBC bag by locking it on the spout through a locking ring with clamp on the wedges provided on the hollow cylindrical body without requirement of any other device or tool.
- the wedges ensure that the spout remains securely locked in place, allowing for seamless and efficient dispensing of the material. This improvement make the proposed device a multipurpose tool.
- the invention features four more wedges that are located in the bottom part of the main body. These wedges are also placed on the outer peripheral surface of the hollow cylindrical body at an angle of 90 degrees apart from each other and 45 degrees apart from the top wedges.
- the described dispensing device are preferably and commonly produced through injection molding process which uses die-cast for 6 the production.
- the preferred embodiment of the device ensures that the surfaces of all the slots and all the openings are parallel to the tangent plane of the cylinder. The said tangent plane is perpendicular to the parting plane of the casting die for the injection molding process.
- the improved invention also includes more ergonomic handle with rounded corners to prevent any possible injury.
- the shape of the handle is designed to fit comfortably in the hand, reducing the chances of strain and discomfort while using the product.
- the rounded edges also ensure that the handle won't cause any unintended cuts or scrapes, making it safe to use.
- the handle is made of a durable material that is lightweight and easy to grip, making it easier to use for extended periods of time.
- our improved invention for the FIBC dispenser provides a number of advantages that make it a more efficient, reliable and sustainable tool for unloading material from FIBC bags.
- the device is easy to use, eliminates the need to use two different devices, and is more secure.
- users can unload material 7 from both types of FIBC bags with and without discharge spouts with ease and efficiency.

- Fig.10 represents the top view cut-out of the portable dispensing device according to the invention to show the surface of the slots being parallel to the tangent plan.
- the portable controlled dispensing device is a hollow cylindrical body 1 with multiple number of strut strips 2 integrally connected to the inner surface of the hollow cylindrical body 1 immerging upwards.
- the strut strips 2 merge in a single point and form the sharp edged tip of the device.
- the multiple strut strips 2 form sharp edged tip that is designed to pierce through the fabric of a flexible intermediate bulk container bag (FIBC Bag).
- the number of strut strips 2 can vary depending on the desired level of stability.
- the Strut Strips 2 Form four large openings on the top of the hollow cylindrical body 1 along with these large openings the Hollow Cylindrical Body 1 Incorporates four other openings on the outer surface of the cylinder which are Flow through Windows 3 On the bottom part of the hollow cylindrical body 1 it merges into Filleted Cylinder Collar 7 which is integrally connected to the cylinder and form the base of the body leaving a circular opening of the hollow cylindrical body 1. All of these components are preferably produced from reinforced engineering grade plastic.
- the invention a single integral unit without welded or glued joints it is preferably produced using injection molding process.
- This technology is preferred as it is a reliable and cost-effective way to mass-produce the present invented device.
- 10 In practice, during the use of portable dispensing device to control the flow of material the circular opening of the cylinder is covered by a pivoted Filleted Gate 9 with handle 8 which is connected to the filleted cylinder collar 7 which also have a handle 10. In closed position both these handles will stay 180 degrees apart from each other to provide better stability and grip for the operation person. As shown in Fig. 5 It is also preferred that the shape of the handles are more ergonomic so that any unintended injuries may be avoided.
- the Filleted Gate 9 and the Filleted Cylinder Collar 7 each have a hole through which the Pivot Joint 11 passes, fixing the Filleted Cylinder Collar 7 to the hollow cylindrical body 1 and allowing it to pivot around the axis of the Pivot Joint 11, the Filleted gate 9 is then pivoted, as illustrated in Figure 4.
- This arrangement offers a secure and easy-to-use locking mechanism of the gate, allowing the opening of the hollow cylindrical body 1 to be shut quickly and effectively.
- the Flexible Hooks 4 are made with Polyurethane material of desired elasticity.
- Polyurethane has properties such as better tensile & compression strength, impact resistance and elasticity it would perform well without getting damaged or damaging the fabric of the FIBC bag and provide multiple number of use.
- the Flexible Hook 4 are guided inwards through the slots as described in Fig.6 as slot for flexible hooks 16 and fixed on the inner side of the hollow cylindrical body 1 by rivet.
- injection molding process is used which requires to develop a die cast for this purpose.
- the Hollow Cylindrical body 1 has strut strips 2 and flow through windows 3 along with the slots for flexible hooks 16 in the prior art designs surfaces of all these slots are kept perpendicular to the periphery of the cylinder surface due to which complexity of the die cast is increased.
- the complexity of the die cast is reduced 12 tremendously which reduces the making and operational cost of the die cast.
- With reduced complexity the die cast also requires less time to operate during the injection molding process thus reducing the cycle time in the injection molding machine. This increases the production efficiency and energy efficiency of the production.
- the Portable dispensing device will be operated by placing it on a flat surface of the ground, then the flexible intermediate bulk container bag or FIBC bag can be lifted above the Portable dispensing device and lowered on it such that the fabric of the bottom surface of the FIBC bag will press against the sharp edged tip of the dispenser.
- the sharp tip will penetrate the Fabric of the FIBC bag and further lowering the FIBC bag onto the portable dispensing device it will be completely penetrated into the FIBC Bag.
- the flexible hooks 4 will be bent downwards and then after penetration they will have regained their shape due to their property of elasticity, this way the flexible hooks 4 will be lodged into the FIBC bag and securely fix the Portable dispensing device to the FIBC bag.
- FIBC Bags Flexible intermediate bulk container bags
- the reusable FIBC bag has flexible spout 13 with spout tie 14.
- the invention introduces a fundamental improvement to the embodiment of the hollow cylindrical body 1 by including eight wedges along the outer peripheral surface of the hollow cylindrical body 1. These eight wedges are grouped in set of fours as Top Wedges 5 and bottom wedges 6 as shown in Fig.1, Fig.2, Figure 3 and Fig.5.
- top wedges 5 are located above the Slots for flexible hook 16 on the outer peripheral surface of the hollow cylindrical body 1 and as described in Fig. 6 bottom wedges 6 are located on the lower part of the hollow cylindrical body 1 these four wedges in a set are located 90 degrees apart from each other thus forming evenly distributed set of four wedges along the outer peripheral surface of the cylinder.
- the Bottom wedges 6 are located 45 degrees apart from the top wedges 5 and also 90 degrees apart from each other thus forming another set of four wedges.
- Shape of these 14 wedges as described in Fig.6 is such that a locking ring with clamp 12 as shown in Fig. 7 can be fitted on these wedges directly.
- the locking ring with clamp 12 can be fitted on the Top wedges 5 as shown in Fig. 8.
- the shape of the Top wedges 5 and the profile of the locking ring with clamp 12 will ensure that the fabric of the spout 13 of reusable FIBC bag will be sandwiched in between the top wedges 5 and the Locking ring 12 perfectly thus fixing the entire dispensing device onto the spout 13 of the Reusable FIBC Bag 15 for the Reusable FIBC bag with longer discharge spout
- the bottom wedges 6 may also be used to fit the locking ring with clamp 12 over it which would increase the strength and stability of the entire arrangement.
- the Dispensing device is inserted into the discharge spout 13 with the spout tie 14 in tied condition. Then the locking ring with clamp 12 can be fixed on the top wedges 5 thus securing the dispensing device to the discharge spout 13 as shown in Fig. 8. Afterwards the Spout tie 14 can be opened to lower the material from the cavity of the bag towards the hollow of the hollow cylindrical body 1 as shown in Fig. 9 the material will travel to the hollow of the cylinder from the openings made from the Strut strips 2 by operating the pivoted filleted gate 9. The opening of the hollow cylindrical body 1 can be controlled to let the material out of the bag.
- the hollow cylindrical body 1 15 proves to be very useful as it enables the single portable dispensing device to be used for unloading of material from both types of FIBC bags i.e. Single use FIBC bags as well as Reusable FIBC bags.
- FIBC bags i.e. Single use FIBC bags as well as Reusable FIBC bags.
- bending force is exhibited on the flexible hooks 4 under fatigue load condition the flexible hooks 4 tend to get damaged after multiple usages.
- the top wedges 5 are intendedly located right above the Slots for the flexible hooks 16 as shown in Fig. 6.
- top wedges 5 as a protective barrier and avoiding direct contact of the FIBC bag with the flexible hook 4 at the corner/edge from where the strips protrude outwards. This will also reduce the fatigue load directly acting upon the flexible hooks 4 thus expanding its lifespan.
