Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of insect control and more specifically to a system and method for rearing and controllably releasing biological control agents (BCA) against plant pests.
  • BCA biological control agents
  • embodiments of the present invention provide a rearing apparatus capable of both controlled and time effective rearing and releasing of the biological control agents.
  • FIG. 7A-C are schematic illustrative diagrams of optional BCA containers featuring a rearing apparatus according to embodiments of the present invention.
  • the advantage of the rearing apparatus of the present invention is that it releases the prey in stable or stationary, low and controlled amounts. This is highly important for the maintenance and viability of the micro-ecosystem comprising the apparatus, and for the reproduction and continued release of the prey from the apparatus. Contrary to the conventional thinking, release of a very large amount of prey individuals, especially in a sharp peak, is problematic for the maintenance and reproduction of the BCA population, and its' continuous release from the eco-system containing the apparatus. This is in fact, the situation in the currently available BCA release products and sachets.
  • the present invention provides a desirable solution for this problem, by providing an apparatus that is designed to limit and control the accessibility of food for the prey population and thus enable the BCA population to be released to the environment containing the plant pests over an extended period of time.
  • the term “rearing composition” as used herein, generally refers to a composition suitable for breeding, bringing up, growing, raising, upbringing, reproducing or propagating a prey mite species suitable for rearing beneficial (non-pest) insect or mite species. It is herein acknowledged that rearing systems for predatory mites or insects heavily depend on the availability of suitable prey for the predators. Therefore, there is a continuing need to improve rearing systems of both predatory mites and mites suitable as a rearing prey.
