Description
A WASHING MACHINE
The present invention relates to a washing machine wherein excessive foam formed during the washing of the laundry is detected.
In washing machines, the formation of excessive foam occurs in the drum if detergent is used in an amount more than necessary or the foamability the detergent used is high. Excess foam in the tub prevents the discharge pump from working effectively and may reach the detergent dispenser through the tub water inlet and thus may leave the washing machine. Moreover, the foam accumulated between the tub and the drum resists the movement of the drum and prevents the drum from reaching high speed by forcing the motor. In this case, the motor cannot rotate the drum at the desired high speed during the rinsing and spin-drying step and the detergent cannot be removed from the laundry. Therefore, manufacturers develop various embodiments to detect and remove excess foam forming in the drum. In one of the state of the art embodiments, the liquid pressure in the tub is continuously monitored by means of a pressure sensor and the excessive foam formation is detected depending on the pressure increase. However, other factors which may cause pressure increase, such as turbulence in the tub during the rotation of the drum, may cause the foam to be detected incorrectly and the foam removal algorithm to be activated even though there is no excessive foam formation. This causes an increase in the amount of water consumed and a longer program duration.
In the state of the art European Patent Application No. EP1971714, a washing machine and the control method thereof are disclosed, wherein excessive foam formation is detected by means of a foam level sensor and a foam removal algorithm is activated.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washing machine wherein the excessive foam formation is correctly detected.
The washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a pressure sensor which detects the liquid pressure in the tub, and a control unit which is configured to determine a pressure difference value by calculating the difference between at least
one control pressure value and an initial pressure value which is measured by the sensor at different times such that a predetermined measurement time elapses in between, during any of the program steps in a washing program comprising a washing step, a rinsing step and a spin-drying step, and configured to detect the foam level is excessive or normal by comparing the determined pressure difference value with a limit pressure difference value predetermined by the manufacturer, which corresponds to the excessive foam level in the tub. Since the foam level is determined according to the change between the initial pressure value and the control pressure value measured in the same program step, the effect of variables such as detergent concentration, washing liquid level and drum rotation speed, which vary in different program steps, is minimized, and excessive foam formation caused by the amount and type of detergent is detected with high accuracy.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the pressure difference value is calculated in the washing step and the amount of foam in the washing step is determined. The excessive foam forming according to the amount and type of detergent can be detected with high accuracy in the washing program step where the detergent concentration in the washing liquid is the highest. This embodiment is also advantageous in that it provides that in case excessive foam is detected in the washing step, at least one operating parameter such as water level, drum rotation, operation status of the discharge pump can be changed in the next program steps so as to ensure the removal of excess foam. Thus, the efficiency of the washing program is increased.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the initial pressure value measurement is performed after at least 10 minutes passes from the start of the washing step. Thus, the initial pressure value measurement is performed after the laundry in the tub is completely soaked so as to absorb the washing water at the maximum level, and incorrect measurement which may result from the change in the liquid level is prevented.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the pressure difference value is calculated in the spin-drying step and the amount of foam in the spin-drying step is determined. By determining the foam level in the spin-drying step where the motor speed is the highest, it is possible to detect the excessive foam which may occur due to the
drum rotation. Thus, if excessive foam is detected during the spin-drying step, it becomes possible to change at least one operating parameter such as the drum rotation speed, the operating status of the discharge pump, and the motor is prevented from straining.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the measurement time between the initial pressure value measurement and the control pressure value measurement is determined to be at least five minutes. Thus, any increase in the amount of foam as a result of effects such as drum rotation and increase in the washing liquid temperature during the measurement time between the initial pressure value measurement and the control pressure value measurement can be detected.
In another embodiment of the present invention, a foam reduction step wherein the liquid in the tub is discharged by opening the discharge pump is defined to the control unit, and upon determining that the pressure difference value measured in the relevant program step is higher than the limit pressure difference value, the control suspends the relevant program step and activates the foam reduction step. Thus, the foamy washing liquid in the tub is at least partially discharged such the amount of foam in the tub is reduced to a level which will not strain the discharge pump and/or the motor.
By means of the present invention, a washing machine is realized, wherein the excessive foam formation is detected with high accuracy, and the extension of washing program and the excessive water consumption due to the erroneous detection of the foam are prevented.
The washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figure, where:
Figure 1 - is the schematic view of the washing machine related to an embodiment of the present invention.
The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Washing machine
2. Drum
3. Tub
4. Motor
5. Discharge pump
6. Pressure sensor
7. Control unit
The washing machine (1) comprises a drum (2) wherein the laundry is loaded; a tub (3) wherein the drum (2) is disposed; a motor (4) which rotates the drum (2); a discharge pump (5) which discharges the washing water from the tub (3); a pressure sensor (6) which measures the liquid pressure in the tub (3), and a control unit (7) which is configured to activate at least one washing program comprising the program steps of washing step, rinsing step and spin-drying step. The control unit (7) is configured to run at least one washing program selected by the user, comprising the washing step wherein the detergent is taken, a rinsing step wherein water is taken into the drum to ensure that the detergent is removed from the laundry after the washing step is completed, and a spin-drying step wherein the drum (2) is rotated at high speed to remove water from the rinsed laundry. The control unit (7) provides that the discharge pump (5) is operated at the end of the washing step and the spin-drying step, and the liquid in the tub (3) is discharged. The control unit (7) is also configured to operate the pressure sensor (6) at different times during the washing program and to determine the pressure of the washing liquid in the tub (3) according to the data received from the pressure sensor (6).
The dishwasher (1) of the present invention comprises a control unit (7) which provides that a pressure difference value (Pd) is determined by calculating the difference between an initial pressure value (Pi) measured by means of the pressure sensor (6) in the same program step and at least one control pressure value (Pc) measured at the end of a predetermined measurement time (t) after the measurement of the initial pressure value (Pi) and that the foam level in the drum (3) is detected by comparing the determined pressure difference value (Pd) with a predetermined limit pressure difference value (Pl). When one of the washing step, the drying step and the spin-drying step is active, the control unit operates the pressure sensor (6) at least twice in the same program step such that a measurement time predefined in the control unit (7) by the manufacturer elapses
in between so as to determine the initial pressure value (Pi) and the control pressure value (Pc), respectively, and calculates the pressure difference value (Pd), which is the difference (Pc-Pi) between the initial pressure value (Pi) and the control pressure value (Pc), and compares the pressure difference value (Pd) with the limit pressure different value (Pl) predefined in the control unit (7) by the manufacturer. If the measured pressure difference value (Pd) is greater than the limit pressure difference value (Pl), the control unit (7) detects that excessive foam is formed in the program step wherein the pressure difference value (Pd) is calculated. The control unit (7) is configured to detect excessive foam formation and to change at least one operating parameter such as the predefined washing water height for the washing program, the drum rotation speed, etc. By measuring the pressure difference value (Pd) in the same program step, excessive foam formation can be detected with high accuracy in each program step.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (7) calculates the pressure difference value (Pd) in the washing step. The control unit (7) determines the pressure difference value (Pd) by determining the initial pressure value (Pi) measured by the pressure sensor (6) in the washing step of the washing program and at least one control pressure value (Pc) at the end of the measurement time (t), and, upon determining that the pressure difference value (Pd) is higher than the limit pressure difference value (Pl), detects that excessive foam is formed in the washing step. Thus, excessive foam which may occur due to the type or amount of detergent taken into the tub (3) in the washing step of the washing program is detected.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (7) is configured to operate the pressure sensor (6) such that the initial pressure value (Pi) is measured at least 10 minutes after the start of the washing step. The control unit (7) is configured to ensure that the initial pressure value (Pi) measurement is performed at the earliest at the 10th minute of the washing step of the washing program by means of the pressure sensor (6). Thus, in the first 10 minutes of the washing step, sufficient time is provided for the water and detergent to be mixed and for all the laundry in the tub (3) to absorb the washing liquid by making contact with the washing liquid, in other words, with the water and detergent mixture. Thus, it is ensured that the initial pressure value measurement is
earned out after the washing liquid level and homogeneity in the tub (3) are balanced, and measurement errors are prevented.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (7) calculates the pressure difference value (Pd) in the spin-drying step. The control unit (7) determines the pressure difference value (Pd) by determining the initial pressure value (Pi) measured by the pressure sensor (6) in the spin-drying step of the washing program and at least one control pressure value (Pc) at the end of the measurement time (t), and, upon determining that the pressure difference value (Pd) is higher than the limit pressure difference value (Pl), detects that excessive foam is formed in the spin-drying step. Thus, excessive foam which may occur due to high speed rotation of the drum (2) during the spin-drying step of the washing program is detected.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the measurement time (t) is at least five minutes. The control unit (7) is configured to operate the pressure sensor (6) such that the measurement time (t) between the initial pressure value (Pi) and the control pressure value (Pc) measurement is at least five minutes. Thus, sufficient time is provided between the initial pressure value (Pi) and control pressure value (Pc) measurements in order to measure a significant increase in the amount of foam in the tub(3), and the effect of small pressure differences, which may be caused by instantaneous changes such as drum (3) movement, turbulence of the washing liquid, etc. on the measured pressure difference value (Pd) is minimized.
In another embodiment of the invention, the limit pressure difference value (Pl) is determined as approximately 8 mmH20. The limit pressure difference value (Pl) is predefined to the control unit (7) by the manufacturer as an average of 8 mmH20. The limit pressure difference value (Pl) is determined as 8 mmH20, which is determined to correspond to the amount of excessive foam formed when the suction of the discharge pump (5) beings to stop and the motor (4) begins to strain due to the resistance. When it is determined that the pressure difference value (Pd) approaches 8 mmH20 by measuring the difference between the initial pressure value (Pi) and the control pressure value (Pc), the control unit (7) decides that the excessive foam is formed. Thus, excessive foam
formation can be detected before the discharge pump (5) and the motor (4) are strained excessively and malfunction
In another embodiment of the invention, the control unit (7) activates a foam reduction step wherein the discharge pump (5) is operated if the pressure difference value (Pd) is greater than the limit pressure difference value (Pl). A foam reduction step is defined to the control unit (7), wherein the discharge pump (5) is operated such that the washing liquid in the tub (3) is at least partially discharged. If excessive foam formation is detected, the control unit (7) pauses the program step wherein the pressure difference value (Pd) is measured so as to activate the foam reduction step, and resumes the relevant program step after the foam reduction step is completed. Thus, as soon as excessive foam formation is detected in the relevant program step, excessive foam is removed and the washing performance is increased in the remaining steps of the washing program.
In another embodiment of the invention, the control unit (7) is configured to control the motor (4) such that the drum (2) is rotated at a target rotation speed (wt) lower than a predetermined normal rotation speed (wn) for the program step wherein the pressure difference value (Pd) is calculated. For each of the washing step, the rinsing step and the spin-drying, a normal rotation speed (wn) is predefined to the control unit (7). The control unit (7) is configured to control the motor (4) such that the drum (2) is driven at a target rotation speed (wt) predefined to the control unit (7), which is lower than the normal rotation speed (wn) in case of the detection of excessive foam. Thus, the rotation speed of the drum (2) is decreased and the amount of foam formed due to the mechanical action is reduced.
In another embodiment of the invention, the target rotation speed (wt) is determined to be approximately 150 rpm. Thus, while the drum (2) is rotated at an appropriate speed for the removal of water from the laundry, the amount of foam formed due to mechanical action is reduced.
By means of the present invention, a washing machine (1) is realized, wherein the amount of foam formed in the washing program is accurately determined. Consequently, the washing performance of the washing machine is increased by preventing the
extension of the program duration and the increase in the water consumption due to the erroneous foam detection.
