Definitions
- the present invention refers to a traceability marker preferably for animals, based on polymers of fossil origin.
- the marker is biodegradable once its function is complete, which means that it completely disintegrates without contaminating the environment.
- Animal markers are currently made of plastic and their design meets several objectives: it allows the identification of the animal, it is easy to read and it can withstand the living conditions of the animal. There is a great variety of ear tags depending on the species.
- Labels or markers are commonly made from laminated polyethylene (“PET”) or a polyvinyl chloride (“PVC”), polypropylene, rubber vulcanized rubber, nylon, achlonithlo-butadiene-styrene (“ABS”) thermo-polymer , or polycarbonate (“PC”), all of which are difficult-to-degrade polymers.
- PET laminated polyethylene
- PVC polyvinyl chloride
- ABS achlonithlo-butadiene-styrene
- PC polycarbonate
- Patent application US20080222930A1 describes a plastic ear tag for animals that includes a tag body and a locking insert, wherein once the locking insert is positioned within the projection of a receptacle of the ear tag body ear, the insert does not easily detach from it.
- the label is made of urethane, vinyl and/or acrylic resins. The degradability of these polymers in the environment is difficult to control since it depends on multiple factors such as temperature or the presence of certain enzymes or microorganisms.
- the present invention intends to solve the problems of marker degradation, ensuring that when they have performed their function they can be biodegraded.
- the scoreboard must maintain its functionality in different weather conditions. That is why the use of conventional plastics has been the quick solution to this problem, although it creates a serious pollution problem due to the waste it generates.
- the present invention solves this problem.
- a new traceability marker has been developed with materials that give the capsule the necessary elasticity and rigidity even when it is in humid conditions, or in contact with bacteria and the sun, and maintaining its biodegradation condition once it is discarded.
- Biodegradable polymers will be used in the marker of the invention.
- a polymer capable of degrading is understood to be those that indistinctly exceed the parameters of any of these regulations.
- EN 13.432 2000 "Requirements for containers and packaging to be recovered by composting and biodegradation”
- EN 14.855 Determination of final aerobic biodegradability and disintegration of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions
- ASTM D6400-99 Standard Specification for compostable plastics
- ASTM D5338-98 Standard test method for the determination of the aerobic degradation of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions
- the present invention refers to a traceability marker that comprises: a first biodegradable polymer of fossil origin in a percentage by weight with respect to the total weight between 10% weight/total weight and 99% weight/total weight ; and a second polymer in a percentage by weight with respect to the total weight comprised between 1% weight/total weight and 50% weight/total weight selected from among: polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, polylactic acid of fossil origin, thermoplastic polyurethane of biological origin, polyamide or combinations of these.
- traceability marker refers to an element for the identification and preferably control of animals that can be made up of two pieces that fit together or a unitary element, for example, as a tape or band. The marker is placed somewhere visible on the animal.
- a first aspect of the invention refers to a traceability marker that comprises: a first biodegradable polymer of fossil origin in a percentage by weight with respect to the total weight between 10% weight/total weight and 99% weight /total weight; and a second polymer in a percentage by weight with respect to the total weight between 1% weight/total weight and 50% weight/total weight selected from among: polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, polylactic acid of fossil origin, thermoplastic polyurethane of biological origin, polyamide or combinations thereof.
- a mixture of polymers is used to adjust both its mechanical characteristics and its degradation time, adjusting to the average life of the animal that carries it.
- the polymers used by the traceability marker of the invention are selected from a first group that, while maintaining their mechanical characteristics, are more or less fast in terms of biodegradation times and are used depending on the average life of farm animals, For example, the average life of a chicken on the farm can be a few months, while a dairy cow can be on the farm for 20 years.
- the various plastic materials of fossil origin used in the marker of the present invention are susceptible to degradation processes as a consequence of physical agents such as heat, solar radiation, deformation by mechanical action and chemical agents such as oxygen, humidity, ozone, atmospheric pollutants. For this reason, mixtures have been developed that control the degradation time so that they can perform their function and, once finished, degrade without creating environmental problems.
- the present invention shows a variety of mixtures taking advantage of the different materials and their properties in order to configure the same product but with different useful life periods.
- the mixtures are compatible with industrial manufacturing processes, especially by injection. Searching for the texture, fluidity and adequate temperature to make it feasible to manufacture. In most of the materials in their pure state, it has been detected that some of the injection manufacturing requirements are not met, either because of their low melting temperature that makes transformation impossible, or because they result in very rigid or too flexible, resulting in a defective product for use, or parts that would not meet composting time regulations.
- total weight (w-r) in the present invention refers to the weight of all polymeric compounds and/or additives and/or fillers comprising the marker.
- Biodegradable polymers of fossil origin have been improved in their mechanical properties by being mixed with other polymers such as: polylactic acid of fossil origin, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) of biological origin and/or polyamide.
- TPU thermoplastic polyurethane
- TPU of biological origin preferably refers to TPU of vegetable origin, that is, TPU that is obtained from biomass of vegetable origin.
- TPU that is obtained from biomass of vegetable origin.
- One of the advantages of this type of TPU is its biodegradability.
- This type of TPU in addition to being biodegradable, is safe for health and reduces the impact on human health, is light and reduces contamination with it. They are preferably obtained from vegetable oils.
- the use of the TPU of plant origin has the advantage of the total biodegradation of the TPU, the TPU that does not have this plant origin is not degradable in various environmental conditions due to the presence of the isocyanate molecule.
