Definitions
- the invention relates to a vehicle occupant restraint system with a passenger airbag.
- Gas bags are well suited to catching vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle impacting an obstacle and thus protecting them from injury. However, efforts are still being made to further reduce, in particular, the load on the occupant's head in the event of an oblique impact.
- the object of the invention is to provide improved protection for a passenger's head.
- a vehicle occupant restraint system which has a passenger airbag with a first and a second inflatable chamber, the second chamber being provided for catching the head of a vehicle occupant assigned to the passenger airbag.
- the first chamber In a completely inflated state of the passenger airbag arranged in a vehicle, the first chamber has a higher internal pressure than the second chamber.
- the first chamber In an impact surface of the passenger airbag, the first chamber has a V-shape with two arms and a tip when viewed along a vehicle front-rear direction, the second chamber being arranged between the arms of the V and the tip of the V points downward with respect to a vehicle vertical direction.
- the V-shape can at least largely prevent the head from evading sideways, particularly in the event of an oblique impact and from twisting the head.
- the head is centered on the second chamber by the arms of the V. Due to the lower internal pressure, the impact surface in the area of the second chamber yields, so that the head can dip into the second chamber. In this way, the load acting on the head of the vehicle occupant can be kept as low as possible.
- the first chamber is preferably arranged in such a way that it offers an impact surface for the shoulders, torso and possibly the lower body of the vehicle occupant.
- the internal pressure of the second chamber should be chosen so low that the second chamber is compliant to allow head immersion.
- the internal pressure of the first chamber should be chosen so high that this chamber remains rigid and dimensionally stable while the vehicle occupant hits the passenger airbag.
- the angle at which the arms of the V of the first chamber enclose the second chamber can be, for example, about 60° to 85° and is preferably less than 90°.
- the arms of the first chamber also serve as a catching surface and to stabilize the shoulder area of the vehicle occupant and also offer protection against twisting of the shoulder area in the event of an oblique impact. It is therefore advantageous if the arms in the vertical direction of the vehicle reach into the shoulder area of the associated vehicle occupant.
- the portion of the passenger airbag formed by the apex of the V may be intended to cushion a torso and/or lower body of the vehicle occupant. As a result, a certain level of protection can also be achieved for vehicle occupants who are not wearing seat belts.
- the first chamber preferably has a larger volume than the second chamber, since it must both stabilize the passenger airbag and do the main part of the containment work.
- the filling volume of the first chamber can be, for example, about 1.5 to 4 times as large as that of the second chamber.
- the baffle preferably consists of sections of an outer wall of the first or second chamber.
- the portion of the outer wall of the second chamber at the baffle is, in one possible example, triangular to kite-shaped, with the apex of the triangle pointing downwards and the side surfaces joining the inside of the arms of the V of the first chamber, providing a suitable catching surface for the head is formed.
- the height of the second chamber on the impact surface may be about 30% to 80% of the total height of the impact surface from the top of the V along the vehicle vertical direction, while the height of the first chamber is correspondingly about 70% to 20% of the total height.
- the arms of the V of the first chamber can protrude at least in sections over the second chamber along the longitudinal direction of the vehicle when the front passenger airbag is in the completely inflated state.
- the arms form side walls in the upper area, which represent a lateral boundary and support the head and lead to the first chamber.
- the second chamber is surrounded on three sides by the first chamber in an upper side of the passenger airbag adjoining the impact surface.
- the second chamber can partially protrude beyond the first chamber in the vertical direction of the vehicle.
- the portion of the second chamber at the top is triangular, for example, with an apex of the triangle pointing toward the windshield of the vehicle and one side of the triangle adjoining the upper side of the triangular or kite-shaped portion of the second chamber in the impact surface.
- the upper side of the second chamber is surrounded by the first chamber in a U-shape, the U being open towards the vehicle occupant.
- the widest point of the second chamber in relation to a vehicle transverse direction is, for example, at the transition from the impact surface to the top.
- the filling gas for the passenger airbag is usually supplied by a gas generator which is present in the vehicle occupant restraint system.
- the gas generator is preferably only in direct flow communication with the first chamber.
- the second chamber is only filled indirectly via the first chamber and does not have its own direct connection to a gas generator. This makes it easy to set a lower internal pressure for the second chamber than for the first chamber.
- At least one valve can be arranged between the first and the second chamber, which valve only allows a gas flow from the first into the second chamber and which forms the only flow connection between the first and the second chamber. This makes it easy to regulate the internal pressure of the second chamber.
- valve it is possible for the valve to form the only outflow opening from the first chamber in order to be able to keep the internal pressure of the first chamber at a high level for as long as possible.
- the valve is in particular a check valve. If necessary, it would also be conceivable to provide a closable or a permanently open overflow opening instead of the valve.
- At least one outlet opening is preferably arranged in an outer wall of the second chamber.
- This outlet opening is advantageously permanently open, so that gas can flow out of the second chamber with little flow resistance and the internal pressure of the second chamber remains at a low level throughout the restraint situation.
- the internal pressure of the second chamber can be adjusted via the size and/or number of the outlet openings.
- the outlet opening is arranged, for example, on the upper side of the passenger airbag.
- the first and second chambers are preferably separated from one another within the passenger airbag by an inner wall, with the first chamber directly adjoining the second chamber.
- the valve is advantageously located in the inner wall.
- the outer wall of the passenger airbag is formed by the outer sides of the first and second chambers, while the inner wall lies between the first and second chambers inside the passenger airbag.
- the inner wall can also assume the function of tethers for shaping and stabilizing the shape of the passenger airbag.
- the second chamber may be wedge or teardrop shaped when inflated, with the majority of the second chamber lying inside the passenger airbag.
- the second chamber forms neither an independent further inflatable bag placed as a separate chamber on the gas bag formed by the first chamber, nor merely a fabric flap placed on the outer wall of the first chamber.
- the second chamber when inflated and installed, protrudes with its sections defining the impact surface towards the rear of the vehicle, i.e. against the direction of travel, with the sections of the impact surface formed by the second chamber, so that the impact surface has a central indentation when viewed from above has the offset second chamber, with which the occupant is additionally stabilized in the lateral direction.
- the second chamber can protrude upwards in the area of the impact surface in relation to the arms and, seen in the direction of travel, define an elevation on the airbag.
- the first chamber forms a kind of base of the gas bag, from which the arms extend upwards.
- the second chamber is received between the arms and protrudes upwards over the arms.
- FIG. 1 shows a schematic perspective illustration of a completely filled passenger airbag of a vehicle occupant restraint system according to the invention in the position arranged in a vehicle;
- FIG. 2 shows the passenger airbag from FIG. 1 in a plan view on its upper side
- FIG. 3 shows a schematic side view of a vehicle occupant restraint system according to the invention with the passenger airbag from FIG. 1;
- FIG. 4 shows a schematic side view of the passenger airbag from FIG. 1 in the completely inflated state
- FIG. 5 shows a schematic top view of the passenger airbag from FIG. 1 in the completely inflated state
- FIGs 6 to 11 the gas flow during the filling of the passenger airbag from Figure 1.
- Figures 1 to 5 show a passenger airbag 10 of a vehicle occupant restraint system 12.
- the passenger airbag 10 is assigned to an individual vehicle occupant 14, here a passenger, and before it is unfolded it is accommodated in an instrument panel 16 of the vehicle (only indicated schematically).
- the passenger airbag 10 lies along a vehicle longitudinal direction L between the instrument panel 16 and the vehicle occupant 14 and extends along a vehicle vertical direction H up to a windshield 18 of the vehicle in order to support itself on the windshield 18 and instrument panel 16.
- FIG. 1 shows the inflated passenger airbag 10 in a view along the longitudinal direction L of the vehicle, so that essentially an impact surface 20 can be seen, which serves to catch the vehicle occupant 14 .
- FIG. 2 shows the passenger airbag 10 in a plan view along the vertical direction H of the vehicle, an upper side 22 being shown essentially.
- FIG. 3 shows the passenger airbag 10 in a side view along a transverse direction Q of the vehicle. It can also be seen here that the impact surface 20 faces the vehicle occupant 14 while the upper side 22 is supported on the windshield 18 .
- the entire interior volume of the passenger airbag 10 is formed by a first inflatable chamber 24 and a second inflatable chamber 26 .
- the internal pressure of the second chamber 26 is lower than that of the first chamber 24.
- the second chamber 26 is arranged such that it catches a head 28 of the vehicle occupant 14 when the latter dips into the passenger airbag 10 .
- the impact surface 20 is composed of an approximately V-shaped section 30 of an outer wall of the first chamber 24 and an approximately triangular to kite-shaped section 32 of an outer wall of the second chamber 26, as can be seen in FIG.
- the V-shaped section 30 is arranged below the section 32 with respect to the vertical direction H of the vehicle, the section 32 lying between the two arms 34 of the V.
- the internal pressure in the first chamber 24 is chosen so high that the passenger airbag 10 remains dimensionally stable when the vehicle occupant 14 dives in, the arms 34 being arranged in such a way that they support a shoulder area 36 of the vehicle occupant 14 .
- the two arms 34 converge to form a tip 38, which catches the torso 40 and/or lower body of the vehicle occupant 10 when the vehicle occupant dives in (see FIG. 1).
- the first chamber 24 forms a kind of base of the gas bag 10, from which the plate-shaped arms 34 extend upwards.
- the second chamber 26 is accommodated between the arms 34 and projects upwards over the arms 34 .
- the arms 34 run towards each other towards the front of the vehicle, seen in plan view, and merge into one another in an arc (see FIG. 2).
- the arms extend inwardly around the lateral edges of the second chamber 26.
- the internal pressure of the second chamber 26 is chosen to be significantly lower, so that the section 32 yields when the head 28 hits it and the head 28 can dip into the impact surface 20 .
- the higher internal pressure of the arms 34 of the first chamber 24 stabilizes the passenger airbag 10.
- the upper ends of the arms 34 protrude a little beyond the section 32 along the longitudinal direction L of the vehicle, as is shown in FIGS.
- the arms 34 develop an additional steering effect on the head 28 and limit its sideways movement and guide it into the center of the section 32 without additional twisting even in the event of an oblique impact. This is indicated in FIG.
- Figure 2 shows that the upper side 22 of the passenger airbag 10 is composed of a section 42 of the outer wall of the first chamber 24 and a section 44 of the outer wall of the second chamber 26, the section 44 being triangular and the section 42 the section 44 U- surrounds shaped, with the open side of the U facing the vehicle occupant 14.
- the side surfaces and the back of the passenger airbag 10 do not have any parts of the outer wall of the second chamber 26 here, but are formed exclusively by sections of the outer wall of the first chamber 24 .
- the second chamber 26 is designed in the shape of a wedge or drop and protrudes, so to speak, from the top 22 into the passenger airbag 10 in.
- the outer wall of the passenger airbag 10 is composed exclusively of sections of the outer wall of the first chamber 24 and the outer wall of the second chamber 26 . Further inflatable chambers are not provided in the passenger airbag 10 in this example.
- the second chamber 26 protrudes far into the interior of the passenger airbag 10 .
- the height of section 32 of second chamber 26 along vehicle vertical direction H on impact surface 20 accounts for 30-80% of the total height of impact surface 20 .
- the arms 34 of the first chamber 26 here enclose an angle a of less than 90°, for example between 60° and 85°.
- the extent of the section 32 along the vehicle transverse direction Q is equal to or greater than the dimension of the two arms 34 together, so that the section 32 of the second chamber 26 is wider than the head 28 of the vehicle occupant 14.
- the filling volume of the first chamber 24 is larger than that of the second chamber 26.
- the first chamber 24 and the second chamber 26 are directly connected to one another inside the passenger airbag 10 along an inner wall 46 or, in other words, they directly adjoin one another, with the inner wall 46 being at least largely gas-tight.
- the inner wall 46 runs along the boundary to the impact surface 20 along the inside of the arms 34 and on the upper side 22 along the inside of the U (see Figure 2) and extends from there downwards into the depth of the passenger airbag 10, as in FIGS Figures 3 and 4 can be seen.
- a conventional gas generator 48 is provided, which is in direct flow connection with the first chamber 24 and is inserted into it here (see FIGS. 4 to 11).
- the second chamber 26 is connected to the first chamber 24 solely through one or more overflow openings 50 in the inner wall 46, es there is therefore no direct flow connection from the gas generator 48 to the second chamber 26.
- a single overflow opening 50 is provided, in which a valve 52 is arranged (not shown in detail), which only allows gas to flow from the first chamber 24 into the second chamber 26 .
- the valve 52 is a check valve that prevents gas from flowing back into the first chamber 24 .
- An outlet opening 54 through which gas can escape from the second chamber 26 is arranged in the outer wall of the second chamber 26 .
- the outlet opening 54 is arranged here at the transition from the impact surface 20 to the upper side 22 and is permanently open in this example.
- the size, number and gas permeability of the overflow openings 50 or of the valve 52 and the outlet openings 54 determine the internal pressure that is established in the second chamber 26 when the gas generator 48 is activated.
- filling gas initially flows exclusively into the first chamber 26, as the arrows 1 in FIGS. 6 and 7 illustrate. From there, the filling gas passes through the overflow opening 50 and the valve 52 into the second chamber 26 (see arrow 2 in FIGS. 8 and 9).
- Part of the filling gas can escape from the second chamber 26 through the outflow opening 54 (see arrow 3 in FIGS. 10 and 11).
- the vehicle occupant 14 can also be caught in the event of an oblique impact in such a way that his head 28 experiences only very small rotational loads.
- the first chamber 24 with its sections defining the impact surface protrudes towards the rear of the vehicle, i.e. opposite to the direction of travel, with the sections of the impact surface formed by the second chamber 26, so that the impact surface in has a central indentation through the offset second chamber 26 in plan view, providing additional lateral stability to the occupant.
- the second chamber 26 can protrude upwards in the area of the impact surface in relation to the arms (see FIG. 1) and define an elevation on the gas bag as seen in the direction of travel.
- the first chamber 24 forms a kind of base of the gas bag, from which the arms 34 extend upwards.
- the second chamber 26 is accommodated between the arms 34 and projects upwards over the arms 34 .
