Definitions
- the present invention refers to an automotive reformer and catalyst, or catalytic converter, integrated in a system to increase fuel energy from the thermal reform or synthesis of a fraction of this fuel in a device that maximizes the use of heat in the internal combustion engine (MCI) exhaust.
- the invention also relates to a method for catalytic reforming fuel.
- the scope of this invention includes conventional fuels for internal combustion engines (ethanol, methanol, gasoline, natural gas or diesel).
- the present invention is intended to promote the energy increase of a fraction of fuel that flows, together with ambient air and/or alternatively with a fraction of the exhaust gas, within a device with impregnation of catalytic content (for example: R, Pd, Rh, etc.), and this device under certain temperatures promotes the production of compounds with greater calorific value compared to the original fuel.
- catalytic content for example: R, Pd, Rh, etc.
- the fuel fraction submitted to this process and in the form of steam will have a higher energy content that will be mixed with the Air/Fuel mixture that enters the MCI. Therefore, due to the higher energy content, the MCI combustion process, operating preferably with ethanol (or any other fuel), will be improved, resulting in greater energy efficiency and reduced levels of greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants.
- gasoline has an energy content, or calorific value, approximately 30% greater than that of ethanol.
- an internal combustion engine when operating on gasoline, has a lower fuel consumption, that is, greater autonomy compared to operating with ethanol. This difference is proportional to the energy difference between the two fuels.
- a complementary objective of the present invention comprises a reformer and catalyst device integrated in a single equipment.
- an integrated automotive reformer and catalyst device comprising a housing which surrounds and defines at least two individual and adjacent chambers, the first chamber being intended for the catalytic conversion of the exhaust gases of the MCI and at least one second chamber for fuel reforming, and the heat generated in the first chamber is transferred to the second chamber by thermal conduction.
- the reforming system with production of compounds for fuel energy increase provides for the integration of the vehicle's catalytic converter in the reformer, thus allowing the maximized use of the heat generated.
- the heat of the catalytic converter is generated by its operation (exothermic chemical reactions due to the catalytic conversion of harmful exhaust gases). In this way, and in the device of the invention, in addition to the heat that is normally rejected by the internal combustion engine due to exhaustion, the heat generated by the activity of the catalytic converter is also used.
- this invention aims to contribute to further enable the use of "Flex Fuel” engines, making the increased use of ethanol even more attractive due to the improvement in performance and autonomy with this fuel.

- Figure 1 is a schematic view of an internal combustion engine illustrating the elements directly related to the system of the present invention
- figure 2 is a schematic view of an embodiment of the reforming catalyst system, according to the invention.
- figure 3 is a schematic view of a second embodiment of the reforming catalyst system according to the invention, in which two fuel reformers are provided, one on each side of the catalyst; and
- Figure 4 is a schematic view of a third embodiment of the reformer catalyst system, according to the invention, in which the reformer is positioned in the central part of the automotive catalyst, the reformer being completely radially enveloped.
- the MCI (1) comprises a block (2) which defines, in its interior, the cylinders (3). Said cylinders (3) are fed by an Air/Fuel mixture in stoichiometric ratio, which can be formed upstream of the intake manifold (4) in indirect injection systems, or inside each cylinder (3), in the systems of direct injection.
- an ECU (5) or electronic central, is responsible for providing the admission of a certain amount of fuel, through the injectors (9), according to the driver's requests and the fresh air flow being admitted. in the system - function of the inlet negative pressure and throttle position (6).
- the exhaust gases are discharged from the exhaust manifold (7), downstream from which a lambda probe (not shown) is provided to determine the amount of residual O2. in the exhaust gases and thus determine the quality of combustion, which information is sent to the ECU (5) and used to regulate the Air/Fuel mixture to be admitted.
- the exhaust gases are then conducted by the exhaust (8) of the vehicle, not without first passing a catalyst, or catalytic converter, responsible for treating the exhaust gases in order to eliminate the most harmful chemical forms such as , for example, carbon monoxide that is oxidized to form CO2, hydrocarbons that are also oxidized to form CO2 and H2O.
- a catalyst or catalytic converter
- Another reaction carried out conventionally on the catalyst is the catalytic reduction of NOx emitted in the forms of N2 and O2. Also as is known, despite the need for a minimum initial temperature for such catalytic reactions to occur, these reactions are exothermic.
- the present invention comprises a catalytic system, or catalyst reformer device (10) that integrates a catalyst to a fuel reformer, particularly of ethanol fuel, or of fuel mixtures containing ethanol, in order to maximize the use of the heat generated by the automotive catalyst, or catalytic converter, by a fuel reformer.
- a fuel reformer particularly of ethanol fuel, or of fuel mixtures containing ethanol
- this description makes specific reference to ethanol as the fuel, it is clear to technicians in the sector that the same concepts and constructions of the catalytic reformer from invention can also be implemented for other fuels, such as methanol, natural gas or CNG, gasoline and diesel.
- the device (10) of the invention is externally defined by a housing (11) which surrounds and defines two individual and adjacent chambers, the first chamber (12) being for the catalytic conversion of exhaust gases from the MCI and the second chamber (13) for the reform of fuel alcohol.
- the first chamber (12) is connected, upstream, to said exhaust manifold (7) of the MCI from the inlet nozzle (14).
- the plenum of the first chamber (12) is filled with a catalytic mesh so that, when the exhaust gases from the MCI flow through it, the catalysts dispersed in this mesh catalyze the oxidation or reduction reactions of the exhaust gas components to the In less harmful ways, as indicated above, such processed and minimized gases are then exhausted from the device from the exhaust (8) downstream, which connects to the outlet nozzle (15).
- said second chamber (13) comprises a plenum filled with a catalytic mesh similar to the mesh of the first chamber, i.e., it may be palladium, platinum, rhodium, silver and/or other suitable catalysts .
- the inlet nozzle (16) of the second chamber (13) is designed to receive both ambient air (alternatively a fraction of the exhaust gas) and the ethanol to be reformed.
- the ambient air is filtered, via the filter (20) before entering the inlet nozzle (16).
- Said supply nozzle (16) can be connected so as to receive a fresh ambient air flow, locally combined with a vaporized fuel alcohol flow by means of a fuel injector (17) specific for this purpose.
- said fuel injector (17) is connected to the fuel pump outlet (not shown), or directly to a specific outlet of the fuel gallery (not shown) in which the injectors (9) of feeding the cylinders (3).
- said inlet nozzle (16) can also receive a partial flow of exhaust gases, which comprises chemical species of interest for the catalytic reactions to be carried out in the catalytic mesh.
- exhaust gases which comprises chemical species of interest for the catalytic reactions to be carried out in the catalytic mesh.
- Table 1 below presents information from the art and compiled in order to correlate the compounds of interest, with the catalyst needed for the production of these compounds of interest and the operating temperatures necessary for the catalytic system to synthesize said compounds of interest.
- the alcoholic fuel injected by said fuel injector (17) may comprise an electrical fuel pre-heating system (cold start system), similar to the one used in the feed injector(s) (9) of fuel from the cylinders (3), and/or can be heated using the heat of the exhaust gases of the MCI, transferred by convection between the respective pipes.
- ambient air or alternatively the mixture of ambient air with a fraction of the exhaust gas, which is introduced into the reformer can be electrically preheated, and/or can be heated using heat from the MCI exhaust gases , transferred by contact between the respective pipes.
- pre-heating is essential to increase the guarantee of evaporation of fuel, specifically ethanol, when injected into the reformer chamber, which is also heated.
- the electric pre-heating system of ethanol and ambient air can remain activated while the exhaust of the MCI is not yet hot enough to transfer heat to these two fluids in the cold start of the MCI operation.
- the catalytic reforming system of the invention can be timed in relation to the start of the MCI, in order to start the fuel reform only after the operating conditions have been reached (estimated MCI heating time) minimum requirements for fuel reform.
- the catalytic reforming system of the invention can be conditioned to the identification of a functional parameter of the MCI, such as the temperature of the coolant and/or ambient air temperature (identification of cold engine).
- each of the second chambers (13) is laterally disposed in relation to the first chamber (12).
- Each of the second chambers (13) comprises a plenum filled with a catalytic mesh; an inlet nozzle (16) designed to receive both ambient air and fuel to be reformed; an exhaust nozzle (18), connected upstream of the intake manifold (4); and a fuel injector (17), arranged upstream of the inlet nozzle (16), for injecting the fuel to be reformed in the respective second chamber (13).
- this solution is illustrated in which two reformers, that is to say two second chambers (13) are arranged on opposite sides in relation to the catalyst, or first chamber (12).
- Each of the second chambers (13) of the reformer in this case, has a respective inlet (16) and respective injector (17). In this solution, there is an increase in relation to the heat exchange from the first chamber (12) to the second chamber (13).
- the first chamber (12) surrounds the second chamber (13); or the second chamber (13) surrounds the first chamber (12).
- the second chamber (13) is cylindrical and completely surrounds the first chamber (12) so that a very significant portion of the heat produced by the first chamber (12) is exclusively directed towards the second chamber (13).
- an inversion is foreseen between the said chambers of figure 4, that is, with the second cylindrical chamber (13) being totally surrounded by the first chamber (12), also cylindrical. In this situation, it is possible to obtain a more accurate control in relation to the percentage of heat emanating from the first chamber and which is directed to the second chamber (13).
- the first chamber (12) can surround the second chamber (13), which also results in a better utilization of the heat released by the first chamber (12) by the second chamber (13).
- the reformer catalyst device (10) of the invention is externally coated with a thermal insulating cover (23), also in order to allow a more accurate control between the amount of heat generated in the first chamber (12 ) and transferred to the second chamber (13).
- said thermal insulating cover (23) may enclose, totally or partially, the first chamber (12) and the second chamber (13).
- the reformer catalyst device (10) of the invention when provided to be installed in an MCI (1) turbocharged, or equipped with a supercharger type super-feeding system, the nozzle of exhaust (18) is connected to a point of the supply system upstream of the turbocharger or supercharger.
- an air filter (20) is provided in order to prevent the ambient air from introducing foreign elements and thus compromising the environment of the plenum of the second chamber (13), as well as the catalytic reactions conducted in this.
- a heat exchanger integrated to a filter at the output of the reform products is provided, in order to prevent new fuels from entering the feed system at an excessively high temperature and accompanied by solid impurities.
- a water reservoir (21) is also provided in order to inject water vapor inside the second chamber (13).
- said water reservoir (21) is intended to increase the amount of water originally provided for in the ethanol fuel, which may not be sufficient to ensure sufficient H2 production in the reformer. Furthermore, and in the event that fuels other than fuel ethyl alcohol are reformed, such extra water supply will guarantee the raw material necessary for the production of gaseous hydrogen.
- the method of the present invention comprises the step of reforming via catalyst the fuel from the heat generated by the catalytic conversion of the MCI exhaust gases and also by the heat normally rejected in this same exhaust system (1).

Description
REFORMADOR E CATALI SADOR AUTOMOTI VO I NTEGRADOS E MÉTODO DE
- a figura 1 é uma vista esquemática do de um motor a combustão interna ilustrando os elementos diretamente correlatos ao sistema da presente invenção;
- a figura 2 é uma vista esquemática de uma forma de realização do sistema catalisador reformador, de acordo com a invenção;
