Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION
COMPOSITION OF DURIAN AND MANGOSTEEN EXTRACTS AND METHOD
OF PREPARATION THEREOF.
TECHNICAL FIELD
This invention relates to chemistry, in particularly related to the composition of durian and mangosteen extracts and method of preparation thereof.
BACKGROUND ART
Durian is common name and a scientific name is Durio zibethinus L. (synonym scientific names are Durio acuminatissimus Merr., Durio stercoraceus Noronha) of Family Bombaceae, mostly grown in eastern and southern region of Thailand. Durian is a perennial plant and is not deciduous. Durian trees are growing to 8-12 metres in height. Durian is classified into dicotyledons with simple leaves type. The leaves are 5-8 cm in width and 15-20 cm in length. The top of the leaves is dark green and the beneath is brown. The durian flowers are perfect flower with a bell-shape and are grown in bunches. Durian fruit has thick rind and sharp thorns on the surface. The texture of the durian fruit is light yellow, depending on the condition of the soil or variety.
Durian is a tropical fruit and widely known as "The King of Fruits" which is very popular around the world. Thailand is one of the most important planting areas for durian and is the top of the producer of durian of the world. In this regard, the waste of durian rinds was increased. There are several methods to get rid of the durian rinds by using them as fertilizer or fuel. In addition to that, there are also the studies to seek on how to use the durian rind in more useful way. The study found that the durian rind is rich in dietary fiber and the extract from the durian rind is also beneficial to the human body in many ways.
Mangosteen is widely known as "The Queen of Fruits". According to the scientific studies, it was found that an extract from the mangosteen peel has antioxidant activity and medical properties. There have been use of the extract of mangosteen peel for medical and cosmetics purposes. In 2011, Li Wang and Xican Li studied the antioxidant activity of durian rind in vitro using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and total phenolic content method. It was found that the extract of durian rind extracted with methanol had antioxidant activity in vitro. This makes Durian rind a natural source of antioxidant and may have medical benefit (Wang, L., Li, XC 2011. Antioxidant activity of Durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) Shell in vitro. Asian J. of Pharmaceut. Biol.Res., 1, 542-551.)
In 2018, Jiarying Feng et.al, studied triterpenoid and glycosides from durian rind extract regarding the anti-inflammatory effect by studying chromatography method and biological activity testing. Durian rind was found to be anti-inflammatory (J. Feng, X. Yi, W. Huang, Y. Wang & X. He. 2018. Novel triterpenoids and glycosides from durian exert pronounced anti-inflammatory activities. Food Chemistry, 241, 215-211.)
In 2018, Dr. Shela Gorinstein presented the study of antioxidant content found in the durian by conducting two-factor studies including durian varieties and the stage of ripening. The study found that Monthong durian had higher antioxidant activity than Chanee, Kanyao, Puangmanee and Kradum Durian.
The problems encountered from the utilization of durian rind in extraction for the extracts are that the durian rinds are large, and having sharp thorns surface. It is also difficult to transport. It is required to proceed with the process of handling the durian rind into small pieces in order to extract. The disadvantage is that it is a time consuming process. Raw material source management is not stable so that it is unable to control the quality of the raw material used for extraction for further commercial use.
Durian flowers often blossom in large quantities by using synthetic nutrient to raise flowers. In order to control the good condition of growth of durian fruits, the growers have to cut and trim flowers continuously in order to balance the nutrient to raise fruits. As well as for the durian tops and young leaves that need to be trimmed in order for great condition for growth of the fruits. Therefore, the durian tops, durian flowers and durian young leaves are the waste parts of the durian trees. The inventor then created the concept to using durian tops, durian flowers, and durian leaves in extraction to study antioxidant activity for further use in particular for cosmetics purpose. According to the search result, it was not found that there is the extraction of durian tops, durian flowers and durian leaves by using propylene glycol as a solvent. In addition, it is also not found that there is the mix between durian extracts and mangosteen extracts for using as an antioxidant active ingredient in cosmetics. Therefore, this invention was developed by using the durian tops, durian flowers and durian leaves were tested for analysis of antioxidant.
Therefore, this invention was developed to decrease such disadvantages and limitations by inventing the extracts of the durian tops, durian flowers and durian leaves and the combination of the said extracts mixed with the extract of mangosteen peel that having high antioxidant activity to be utilized in various fields, especially for cosmetics purpose.
