Description

SYSTEM FOR LOCKING A GLAZING BEAD IN THE PROFILE OF A FRAME OF A WINDOW OR DOOR, A WINDOW OR DOOR EQUIPPED THEREWITH AND METHOD APPLIED THEREBY
The present invention relates to a lock for locking a glazing bead in the profile of a frame of a window or door.
Frame refers to both the frame of a movable leaf of a window or door and a fixed frame with a glass panel or other panel therein such as for a fixed window in a façade or the like.
As is known, the leaf of a window or door contains a frame that is composed of profiles from aluminium or the like which together define a rebate in which a panel is or can be mounted.
The panel is held in the rebate between a stop lip on the outside of the frame and one or more glazing beads on the inside of the window or door, said glazing beads being clipped into a fitting groove which is provided to this end in the rebate in the profiles and is delimited by two opposite undercut edges, respectively a first undercut edge at the distance from the inside of the frame and a second undercut edge closer to this inside.
The panel is caught between two seals, respectively an outer seal on said stop lip on the outside of the panel and an inner seal between the panel and the stop beads on the inside of the panel. Such glazing bead is classically executed as an essentially U-shaped profile with two legs, the free ends of which are provided with a clip detail to be able to clip the glazing bead between said undercut edges of the fitting groove behind the undercut edges of the fitting groove.
The glazing bead is clipped in by tilting it diagonally in relation to the window profile and first hooking a first leg behind the first undercut edge, after which the second leg is clipped behind the second undercut edge of the fitting groove by 'tilting back' the glazing bead and by the elasticity of the glazing bead.
Once the glazing beads are clipped in place, the inner seal is mounted between the glazing bead and the panel.
Such classic U-shaped glazing beads are easy to insert, but have the disadvantage that in case of a high wind load the first leg may deform, such that it no longer engages behind the first undercut edge and thus the glazing bead comes loose, with possible risk of the panel coming loose.
Another disadvantage is that in the event of a burglary attempt, a burglar will try to fold away the outer lip of the rebate of the frame, after which he can use a simple tool such as a screwdriver or the like to push the first leg of the glazing bead away towards the second leg, thus loosening the first leg and easily removing the panel from the frame of the window or door. To solve these disadvantages, 'burglary resistant' glazing beads were already applied in the past.
These are glazing beads where the opening between the two legs is bridged by an additional rigid connection, such that a tubular glazing bead is created. This ensures that the first leg can no longer be pushed away toward the second leg in the event of a burglary attempt. The tubular shape also makes the whole glazing bead more rigid, such that it is also more resistant to higher wind loads.
These glazing beads have the disadvantage that they are more expensive due to the extra material needed for the extra bridging.
Another disadvantage is that the increased rigidity means they cannot be clipped and therefore do not easily stay in place as long as the inner seal has not been placed which cause the glazing beads to be pushed downward.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a solution to one or more of the aforementioned and other disadvantages .
To this end, the invention relates to a system, comprising:
- a profile of a frame of a window or door with a fitting groove;
- a glazing bead and;
- a lock for locking a glazing bead in the fitting groove, whereby the fitting groove is provided with a bottom and two opposite undercut edges, respectively a first edge and a second edge and whereby the glazing bead is executed as an essentially U-shaped profile with two legs, the free ends of which are provided with a clip detail to be able to clip the glazing bead between said undercut edges of the fitting groove behind the undercut edges of the fitting groove, characterised in that the lock is executed as a slider which fits in the fitting groove with a certain lateral play, whereby the lock is laterally slideable on the bottom of the fitting groove in the transversal direction of the fitting groove and in that the lock is provided with two side edges, respectively a first side edge oriented toward the first undercut edge and a second side edge oriented toward the second undercut edge, whereby the second side edge of the lock is provided with a chamfer which, by co-operating with the clip detail on the second leg of the glazing bead, is intended to automatically slide the lock when clipping in the second leg in the direction of the first leg into a first outer sliding position while blocking the first leg against unintentional unclipping in the fitting groove.
Thanks to such lock according to the invention the glazing beads are blocked in the fitting groove against unintentional inward deformation of the legs.
This provides the advantage that consequently the window or the door is resistant to higher wind loads. Another advantage is that the burglary resistance and impact resistance to shocks can be improved. Yet another advantage is that cheaper U-shaped standard glazing beads can be used for burglary resistant systems and systems requiring higher wind loads. The protection against the panel falling out in the event of the impact of shocks, for example from someone failing against or bumping into the panel or glazing, is also much higher than without the use of the lock.
An added advantage is that where necessary the lock can simply be mounted on already installed windows with standard glazing beads to thus increase the burglary resistance without having to install new burglary resistant glazing beads or without the need for operations to be performed on the standard glazing beads for mounting any extra fastening pieces.
Indeed, the lock can be very easily installed in the fitting groove during mounting, whereby it suffices to slide the lock as far as possible toward the second undercut edge, after which the glazing bead can then be clipped into the fitting groove whereby, by clipping in the second leg, the lock is automatically slid toward the first leg thanks to the chamfer to enclose the clip detail of the first leg between the lock and the first undercut edge of the fitting groove, such that this clip detail can no longer unintentionally come loose, even in the event of a burglary attempt in the classic way as explained before.
To hold the lock in place in the fitting groove during mounting, the lock is preferably provided with a through slot hole which extends perpendicularly to the side edges of the lock, said slot hole allowing a screw to be screwed through the slot hole in the underlying bottom of the fitting groove to fix the lock with a very light tension against the bottom while still allowing the lock to slide.
In this case it is useful to provide the lock with means to reduce the contact surface between the lock and the head of the screw when tightening the screw, for example with one or more pointed local surface irregularities on the top side of the lock.
The invention also relates to a window or door equipped with one or more of such locks according to the invention.
The invention also relates to a method for locking a panel in the rebate of a frame of a window or door or the like, whereby the frame is composed of profiles with a fitting groove in the rebate, said fitting groove being provided with a bottom and two opposite undercut edges, respectively a first edge and a second edge, and whereby the panel is held in the frame by means of glazing beads which are essentially executed as a U-shaped profile with two legs, the free ends of which are provided with a clip detail with which the glazing beads between said undercut edges of the fitting groove can be clipped behind the undercut edges of the fitting groove, characterised in that the method comprises the following steps,
- mounting the panel in the rebate of the frame; - slideably mounting one or more locks according to any one of the claims 1 to 15 in the fitting groove with the chamfer facing away from the panel;
- sliding the locks in the fitting groove in a direction away from the panel into their second outer sliding position;
- using the glazing bead to insert the clip detail on the first leg in a slanted position in the space between the lock and the first undercut edge and clipping said first leg behind said first undercut edge;
- letting the glazing bead tilt around the first clip detail on the first leg until the second clip detail on the second leg comes into contact with the chamfer of the lock;
- letting the glazing bead tilt further until the second clip detail is clipped behind the second undercut edge of the fitting groove, whereby this tilting movement causes the second clip detail to push away the lock in the direction of the first leg by co-operating with the chamfer. With the intention of better showing the characteristics of the invention, a few preferred embodiments of a lock for a glazing bead according to the invention and a method applied thereby are described hereinafter by way of an example, without any limiting nature, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: figure 1 schematically shows a cross-section of a known classic window; figures 2 to 4 illustrate consecutive steps during the mounting of the window of figure 1, but with omission of some parts; figure 5 shows an accessory according to the invention; figures 6 to 9 show consecutive steps of the mounting of a window as shown in figure 1, but with use of the accessory of figure 5 according to the invention; figure 10 shows an alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention; figures 11 and 12 show consecutive steps of a window, using the accessory of figure 10; figure 13 shows a cross-section according to line XIII-XIII in figure 12; figure 14 shows a next step when mounting the window with the accessory of figure 10. The window shown in figure 1 is a classic window, containing a frame 2 that is composed of profiles 3 and a panel 4 mounted in the frame, in this case a glass panel. The profiles 3 are composite profiles with an outer shell 3a on the outside 5 of the frame 2 and an inner shell 3b on the inside 6, said shells being connected by so-called insulating bars 3c.
The frame 2 is provided with a rebate 7 which is delimited by a transverse wall 8 of the composite profile and a stop lip 9 on the outside 5 of the frame.
The inner shell 3b is provided with a fitting groove 10 with a bottom 10a and two opposite undercut edges 10b and 10c, respectively a first edge 10b at a distance from the inside 6 of the frame 2 and a second edge at a shorter distance. The fitting groove 10 is delimited between two upstanding walls 10d with two facing ribs which form said undercut edges 10b and 10c.
The panel 4 is enclosed with its outer contour in the rebate 7 between the stop lip 9 and a glazing bead 11 which are clipped into said fitting groove 10.
The panel 4 is clamped between an outer seal 12 on the stop lip 9 and an inner seal 13 which after mounting the glazing bead 11 is mounted between the glazing bead 11 and the panel 4. The glazing bead 11 is a classic glazing bead which essentially is executed as a ϋ-shaped profile with two legs 11a and 11b, respectively a first leg 11a and a second leg 11b, which can be elastically pressed toward each other.
The legs 11a and 11b are provided at their free ends with a hook shaped clip detail, respectively a first clip detail 11c and second clip detail 11d, with which the glazing bead 11 between said undercut edges 10b and 10c of the fitting groove 10 is clipped behind the undercut edges 10b and 10c of the fitting groove 10.
As shown in figure 2 the glazing beads 11 are clipped in the fitting groove 10 by clipping the glazing beads 11 in a slanted tilting position toward the panel 4, first with a first clip detail 11c behind the first undercut edge 10b and subsequently with the second clip detail 11d behind the second undercut edge 10c by tilting the glazing bead 11 away from the panel 4 around the first undercut edge 10b as tilting point into the position of figure 3 in which the panel and the outer seal 12 are not shown for simplicity.
Once the glazing bead 11 is mounted, the inner seal is mounted as shown in figure 1.
Burglary cases are known whereby the stop lip 9 is folded outward as shown in figure 4, such that the first leg 11a of the glazing bead 11 becomes accessible from the outside to a screwdriver or other tool 14, which can be inserted into the opening between the panel 4 and the transverse wall 8 of the profile 3 to push away and unclip the first leg 11a and thus loosen the glazing bead 11. When all glazing beads around the panel have been loosened in this way the panel can be pushed out.
To prevent this the invention provides a lock 15, a first embodiment of which is shown in figure 5 and is mounted in the fitting groove between the legs 11a and 11b of the glazing bead 11 such that, as shown in figure 9 the space between the two legs 11a and 11b of the glazing bead 11 is filled, such that folding away the first leg 11a in the event of a burglary or under a wind load is no longer possible.
The lock of figure 5 is formed as an essentially slat- shaped element with an underside 16 and a top side 17 and two parallel longitudinal side edges, respectively a first squared side edge 18 and a second side edge 19 which is provided with a chamfer 20 and a connecting stop 21, in this case in the form of a laterally protruding lip.
The chamfer 20 extends from the top side 17 to the stop 21 below and encloses a sharp A angle with the underside 16 of, for example, approximately 60°.
The lock 15 has a thickness B which in the example is approximately equal to the depth C of the fitting groove 10 and a short length D of a few centimetres.
The lock 15 has a width E which is such that a slider fits in the fitting groove 10 with a .certain lateral play, such that the lock 15 is laterally slideable with its underside 16 on the bottom 10a of the fitting groove 10 in the transversal direction of the fitting groove 10. In the example the width E is less than the width F of the opening of the fitting groove 10 between the undercut edges 10b and 10c.
Preferably, the lock 15 is provided with a through slot hole 22 which extends perpendicularly to the side edges 18 and 19.
One or more locks 15 are mounted in the fitting groove 10 at a spaced distance from each other, with their underside resting on the bottom 10a of the fitting groove 10.
The locks 15 can be attached in the fitting groove 10 by means of screws 23 which are screwed in the bottom 10a as shown in figure 7 and which in this case are provided with a head 23a with a flat underside 23b.
On the top side 17, one or more local surface irregularities 24 are provided, in this case two nodules, at a distance from the centre line of the slot hole 22 which is smaller than the radius of the underside 23b of the head 23a of the screw 23.
These surface irregularities 24 are a means to ensure that when tightening the screw 23, the contact surface between the lock 15 and the head 23a of the screw is reduced, which allows the lock 15 to be slid in the fitting groove 10, even in the event of a lightly tightened screw 23.
For mounting a glazing bead 11 first the locks 15 are mounted in the fitting groove 10 as shown in figure 6 and attached therein by means of said screws 23 which are lightly tightened until they come into contact with the surface irregularities 24.
The locks are then laterally slid toward the second undercut edge 10c into a second outer sliding position in which the stop forming lip 21 comes to rest on the upstanding wall 10d of the fitting groove 10.
The lock 15 is formed and dimensioned such that in this outer sliding position there is still a space 25 between the chamfer 20 and second undercut edge 10c as shown in figure 7, whereby this space is such that the chamfer 20 still partly extends to under the second undercut edge 10c. In this second outer sliding position of figure 7, there is still a space 26 between the side edge 18 of the lock 15 and the first undercut edge 10b of the fitting groove which is wider than the width of the clip detail 11c of the glazing bead 11.
Now the glazing bead 11 without inner seal 13 is inserted at an angle G in a tilted position vis-a-vis the first clip detail 11c in the space 26 as shown in figure 8 and using said clip detail 11c as tilting point is tilted up again into the position of figure 9, whereby the second clip detail 10c ends up in the space 25 and on tilting comes into contact with the chamfer 20, such that the lock 15 is then pushed away in the direction of the first leg 11a as shown with arrow H, into a first outer position in which the width of the remaining space 26 is narrower than the width of the first clip detail 11c of the first leg of the glazing bead 11.
In this way the clip detail 11c is locked in its clip position and is thus protected against the first leg 11a being pushed away by a burglar or by a fierce gust of wind or the like.
To finish the window 1 the inner seal 13 is now mounted.
Figure 10 shows an alternative embodiment of a lock 15 according to the invention, whereby in this case the slot hole 22 is mounted in a sunken recessed part 27 which in the example is executed as a slot with slanted flanks 27a which form a seat for the head 23a of a screw 23 with conical underside 23b, all this such that the head of the screw 23 can lie in the recessed part 27 as shown in the figures 12 to 14.
In this case, the means to reduce the contact surface with the head 23a of the screw 23 are formed by one or more surface irregularities 24 in the form of pointed ribs on the slanted flanks 27a of the slot.
The lock 15 can be made for example in synthetic material or the like and is very simple to make.
It is clear that a lock according to the invention is applicable in combination with a classic glazing bead 11.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiments described as an example and shown in the drawings, but a lock for a glazing bead according to the invention can be realised in all kinds of forms and dimensions without departing from the scope of the invention.

Claims

Claims.
1 - System containing:
- a profile (3) of a frame (2) of a window or door with a fitting groove (10);
- a glazing bead (11) and;
- a lock (15) for locking a glazing bead (11) in the fitting groove (10), whereby the fitting groove (10) is provided with a bottom (10a) and two opposite undercut edges, respectively a first edge (10b) and a second edge (10c) and whereby the glazing bead (11) is executed as an essentially U-shaped profile with two legs (11a,11b), the free ends of which are provided with a clip detail (11c,11d) to be able to clip the glazing bead (11) between said undercut edges (10b,10c) of the fitting groove behind the undercut edges of the fitting groove, characterised in that the lock (15) is executed as a slider which fits in the fitting groove (10) with a certain lateral play, whereby the lock (15) is laterally slideable on the bottom (10a) of the fitting groove (10) in the transversal direction of the fitting groove (10) and in that the lock (15) is provided with two side edges, respectively a first side edge (18) oriented toward the first undercut edge (10b) and a second side edge (19) oriented toward the second undercut edge (10c), whereby the second side edge (10c) of the lock (15) is provided with a chamfer (20) which, by co-operating with the clip detail (11d) on the second leg (11b) of the glazing bead (11) is intended to automatically slide the lock (15) when clipping in the second leg (11b) in the direction of the first leg (11a) into a first outer sliding position while blocking the first leg (11a) against unintentional unclipping in the fitting groove (10).
2.- Lock according to claim 1, characterised in that the lock (15) is provided with a stop (21) on its second side edge (19) which determines a second outer sliding position of the lock (15) in the fitting groove (10) in the direction of the second undercut edge (10c), whereby this stop (21) is such that in this second outer sliding position there is still a space (25) between the chamfer (20) and the second undercut edge (10c).
3.- Lock according to claim 2, characterised in that the bottom (10a) of the fitting groove (10) is delimited breadthways of the fitting groove (10) between two upstanding walls (10d) and that the second outer sliding position is determined by the contact of the stop (21) with an upstanding wall (10d).
4.- Lock according to claim 2 or 3, characterised in that the stop (21) is executed as a laterally protruding lip relative to the chamfer (20) .
5 Lock according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that in the first outer sliding position of the lock (15) there is a space (26) between the first side edge (18) of the lock (15) and the first undercut edge (10b) of the fitting groove (10) which breadthways is narrower than the width of the free end with the clip detail (11c) of the first leg (11a) of the glazing bead (11)-
6.- Lock according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that the first side edge (18) of the lock (15) is a perpendicular side edge.
7.- Lock according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that the lock (15) has a thickness (B) which approximately corresponds with the depth (C) of the fitting groove (10).
8.- Lock according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that the lock (15) is provided with a through slot hole (22) which extends perpendicularly to the side edges (18, 19) for a screw (23) which can be screwed through the slot hole (22) in the underlying bottom (10a) of the fitting groove (10).
9.- Lock according to claim 8, characterised in that the lock (15) is provided with means to reduce the contact surface of the screw between the lock (15) and the head (23a) of the screw (23) when tightening it.
10.- Lock according to claim 9, characterised in that the means for reducing the contact surface with a screw (23) are formed by one or more local surface irregularities (24) of the lock (15), for example in the form of a nodule, at a distance from the centre line of the slot hole (22) which is smaller than the radius of the head (23a).
11.- Lock according to claim 10, characterised in that the surface irregularities (24) are located on the top side (17) of the lock (15) for a screw (23) with a head (23a) with a flat underside (23b).
12.- Lock according to claim 10 or 11, characterised in that the slot hole (22) is mounted in a sunken recessed part (27) of the top side (17) of the lock (15).
13.- Lock according to claim 12, characterised in that the recessed part (27) is executed as a slot with slanted flanks (27a), whereby the means to reduce the contact surface between the lock (15) and the head (23a) of the screw (23) are formed by surface irregularities(24) in the form of one or more pointed ribs on the slanted flanks (27a) of the slot.
14.- Window or door containing a frame that is composed of profiles and a panel mounted in the frame, whereby the profiles (3) are provided with a fitting groove (10) with a bottom (10a) and two opposite undercut edges, respectively a first edge (10b) and a second edge (10c), and whereby the panel (4) in the frame (2) is held by means of glazing beads (11) which essentially are executed as a U-shaped profile with two legs (11a, 11b) the free ends of which are provided with a clip detail (11c, 11d) with which the glazing beads (11) between said undercut edges (10b, 10c) of the fitting groove (10) are clipped behind the undercut edges of the fitting groove, characterised in that the legs (11a, 11b) of the glazing beads (11) are locked in the fitting groove (10) by means of a lock (1.5) according to any one of the previous claims which is mounted on the bottom (10a) of the fitting groove (1.0) between the clip details (11c, 11d) of both legs of a glazing bead (11) to prevent that the legs (11a, 11b) can unintentionally unclip or be unclipped.
15.- Method for locking a panel (4) in the rebate (7) of a frame (2) of a window or door (1) or the like, whereby the frame (2) is composed of profiles (3) with a fitting groove (10) in the rebate (7), said fitting groove (10) being provided with a bottom (10a) and two opposite undercut edges, respectively a first edge (10b) and a second edge (10c), and whereby the panel (4) in the frame (2) is held by means of glazing beads (11) which essentially are executed as a U-shaped profile with two legs (11a, 11b), the free ends of which are provided with a clip detail (lie, 11d) with which the glazing beads (11) between said undercut edges (10b, 10c) of the fitting groove (10) can be clipped behind the undercut edges of the fitting groove, characterised in that the method comprises the following steps :
- mounting the panel (4) in the rebate (7) of the frame
(2);
- slideably mounting one or more locks (15) according to any one of the claims 1 to 15 in the fitting groove (10) with the chamfer (20) facing away from the panel (4);
- sliding the locks (15) in the fitting groove (10) in a direction away from the panel (4) into their second outer sliding position;
- using the glazing bead (11) to insert the clip detail (11c) on the first leg (11a) in a slanted position in the space (26) between the lock (15) and the first undercut edge (10b) and clipping said first leg (11a) behind said first undercut edge (10b);
- letting the glazing bead (11) tilt around the first clip detail (11c) of the first leg (11a) until the second clip detail (11d) on the second leg (11b) comes into contact with the chamfer (20) of the lock (15);
- letting the glazing bead (11) tilt further until the second clip detail (11d) is clipped behind the second undercut edge (10c) of the fitting groove (10), whereby this tilting movement causes the second clip detail (11d) to push away the lock (15) in the direction of the first leg (11a) by co-operating with the chamfer (20) .
