Abstract

励起光源からの励起光を増幅用光ファイバで効率的に吸収させて残留励起光を低減することができる信頼性の高いファイバレーザ装置を提供する。ファイバレーザ装置1は、コア61と、励起光が伝搬可能なクラッド層62とを有する増幅用光ファイバ12と、励起光を生成可能な励起光源21~23と、励起光源21~23からの励起光を増幅用光ファイバ12に出力する光コンバイナ40とを備える。光コンバイナ40は、入力光ファイバ41~44と、増幅用光ファイバ12に接続される出力光ファイバ45と、光軸方向に次第に断面積が小さくなる絞り部47を含むブリッジファイバ90とを有する。吸収率が高い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源21は、ブリッジファイバ90の中心領域R1に接続される入力光ファイバ41に接続され、吸収率が低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源23は、中心領域R1よりも外側の領域R3,R4に接続される入力光ファイバ43,44に接続される。

Description

ファイバレーザ装置
 本発明は、ファイバレーザ装置に係り、特に複数の励起光源から出射される励起光を用いてレーザ光を出力するファイバレーザ装置に関するものである。
 ファイバレーザ装置においては、増幅用光ファイバのコアに添加された希土類元素イオンを励起するために複数の励起光源から出射される励起光を用いることがある(例えば、特許文献1参照)。このような励起光のうち増幅用光ファイバで吸収されなかった励起光(残留励起光)は、後流側に接続されている光デバイス(コンバイナやクラッドモードストリッパなど)に到達して吸収されることも考えられ、そのような場合には、これらの光デバイスが発熱して信頼性が低下してしまう。また、双方向励起型のファイバレーザの場合には、一方の励起光源からの励起光が他方の励起光源に到達して半導体レーザ素子を故障させるおそれがあり、例えば、残留励起光が半導体レーザ素子の活性層に入射すると素子故障が生じることも考えられる。

 本発明は、このような従来技術の問題点に鑑みてなされたもので、励起光源からの励起光を増幅用光ファイバで効率的に吸収させて残留励起光を低減することができる信頼性の高いファイバレーザ装置を提供することを目的とする。
 本発明の一態様によれば、励起光源からの励起光を増幅用光ファイバで効率的に吸収させて残留励起光を低減することができる信頼性の高いファイバレーザ装置が提供される。このファイバレーザ装置は、希土類元素イオンが添加されたコアと、上記希土類元素イオンを励起する励起光が伝搬可能なクラッド層とを有する増幅用光ファイバと、上記励起光を生成可能な複数の励起光源と、上記複数の励起光源からの上記励起光を結合して上記増幅用光ファイバに出力する光コンバイナとを備える。上記光コンバイナは、上記複数の励起光源のそれぞれと接続される複数の入力光ファイバと、上記増幅用光ファイバに接続される出力光ファイバと、上記複数の入力光ファイバから上記出力光ファイバに向かって光軸方向に次第に断面積が小さくなる絞り部を含むブリッジファイバとを有する。上記複数の励起光源は、第1の励起光を出射する第1の励起光源と、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が上記第1の励起光の波長よりも低い波長の第2の励起光を出射する第2の励起光源とを含む。上記ブリッジファイバは、上記複数の入力光ファイバが接続される入射端面を有する。上記複数の入力光ファイバは、上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の第1の領域に接続される第1の入力光ファイバと、上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に対して上記第1の領域よりも外側に位置する第2の領域に接続される第2の入力光ファイバとを含む。上記第1の励起光源は、上記第1の入力光ファイバに接続され、上記第2の励起光源は、上記第2の入力光ファイバに接続される。

 以下、本発明に係るファイバレーザ装置の実施形態について図1から図7を参照して詳細に説明する。なお、図1から図7において、同一又は相当する構成要素には、同一の符号を付して重複した説明を省略する。また、図1から図7においては、各構成要素の縮尺や寸法が誇張されて示されている場合や一部の構成要素が省略されている場合がある。
 図1は、本発明の一実施形態におけるファイバレーザ装置1の構成を示す模式図である。本実施形態におけるファイバレーザ装置1は、光共振器10と、光共振器10に励起光を導入する複数の励起光源21~23と、光ファイバ31~33を介してこれらの励起光源21~23と接続される光コンバイナ40とを備えている。
 光共振器10は、例えばイッテルビウム(Yb)やエルビウム(Er)、ツリウム(Tr)、ネオジム(Nd)などの希土類元素イオンが添加されたコアを有する増幅用光ファイバ12と、融着接続部54を介して増幅用光ファイバ12と接続される高反射ファイバブラッググレーディング(High Reflectivity Fiber Bragg Grating(HR-FBG))14と、融着接続部56を介して増幅用光ファイバ12と接続される低反射ファイバブラッググレーディング(Output Coupler Fiber Bragg Grating(OC-FBG))16とから構成されている。本実施形態では、増幅用光ファイバ12のコアにYbが添加されているものとして説明する。また、本明細書における「接続」は、物理的な接続だけではなく、光学的な接続をも含むものとする。
 図2は、増幅用光ファイバ12を模式的に示す断面図である。図2に示すように、本実施形態における増幅用光ファイバ12は、上述した希土類元素イオンが添加されたコア61と、コア61の周囲に形成された内側クラッド62と、内側クラッド62の周囲に形成された外側クラッド63とを有するダブルクラッドファイバによって構成されている。増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62の屈折率はコア61の屈折率よりも低く、外側クラッド63の屈折率は内側クラッド62の屈折率よりも低くなっている。これにより、内側クラッド62の内部には励起光源21~23からの励起光が伝搬するようになっている。
 また、ファイバレーザ装置1は、OC-FBG16から延びるデリバリファイバ50をさらに有しており、このデリバリファイバ50の後流側の端部には増幅用光ファイバ12からのレーザ発振光を例えば被処理物に向けて出射するレーザ出射部52が設けられている。
 励起光源21は、例えば発振波長976nmの高出力マルチモード半導体レーザ素子を含んでおり、波長976nm(=λ1)の励起光P1を生成するように構成されている。励起光源22は、例えば発振波長973nmの高出力マルチモード半導体レーザ素子を含んでおり、波長973nm(=λ2)の励起光P2を生成するように構成されている。励起光源23は、例えば発振波長970nmの高出力マルチモード半導体レーザ素子を含んでおり、波長970nm(=λ3)の励起光P3を生成するように構成されている。本実施形態では、励起光源21は1個、励起光源22は6個、励起光源23は13個設けられている。光コンバイナ40は、これらの励起光源21~23から出力される励起光P1~P3を結合して上述した増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に導入するものである。これにより、増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62の内部を励起光P1~P3が伝搬する。
 HR-FBG14は、周期的に光ファイバの屈折率を変化させて形成されるもので、所定の波長帯の光を100%に近い反射率で反射するものである。OC-FBG16は、HR-FBG14と同様に、周期的に光ファイバの屈折率を変化させて形成されるもので、HR-FBG14で反射される波長帯の光の一部(例えば10%)を通過させ、残りを反射するものである。このように、HR-FBG14と増幅用光ファイバ12とOC-FBG16とによって、HR-FBG14とOC-FBG16との間で特定の波長帯の光を再帰的に増幅してレーザ発振を生じさせる光共振器10が構成される。
 光共振器10において、増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62を伝搬する励起光P1~P3は、コア61を通過する際に希土類元素イオンに吸収され、この希土類元素イオンが励起されて自然放出光が生じる。この自然放出光がHR-FBG14とOC-FBG16との間で再帰的に反射され、特定の波長(例えば1064nm)の光が増幅されてレーザ発振が生じる。光共振器10で増幅された波長のレーザ光は、増幅用光ファイバ12のコア61内を伝搬し、その一部がOC-FBG16を透過して後流側に伝搬する。OC-FBG16を透過したレーザ光は、デリバリファイバ50を通ってレーザ出射部52から例えば被加工物に向けて出射される。
 図1に示す例では、HR-FBG14側にのみ励起光源21~23が設けられた前方励起型のファイバレーザ装置となっているが、OC-FBG16側に励起光源21~23を設けた後方励起型のファイバレーザ装置としてもよく、あるいはHR-FBG14側及びOC-FBG16側の双方に励起光源21~23を設けた双方励起型のファイバレーザ装置としてもよい。また、光共振器10内でレーザ発振させるための反射手段としてFBGに代えてミラーを用いることもできる。
 図3は、光コンバイナ40を示す斜視図である。図3においては、理解を容易にするために、光コンバイナ40の構成要素が光軸方向に沿って互いに離間して示されているが、実際には、これらの構成要素は互いに融着接続されている。図3に示すように、光コンバイナ40は、励起光源21から延びる光ファイバ31の少なくとも一部を構成する入力光ファイバ41と、励起光源22から延びる光ファイバ32の少なくとも一部を構成する入力光ファイバ42と、励起光源23から延びる光ファイバ33の少なくとも一部を構成する入力光ファイバ43,44と、これらの入力光ファイバ41~44の後流側に配置されるブリッジファイバ90と、ブリッジファイバ90の後流側に接続される出力光ファイバ45とを含んでいる。なお、出力光ファイバ45は、HR-FBG14が形成された光ファイバと融着接続されていてもよいし、出力光ファイバ45自体にHR-FBG14を形成することも可能である。
 それぞれの入力光ファイバ41~44は、図示しないコアを有しており、励起光源21~23からの励起光はこのコアを伝搬するようになっている。図4は、入力光ファイバ41~44の配置を示す模式図である。図4に示すように、本実施形態では、光コンバイナ40は、1本の入力光ファイバ41と、6本の入力光ファイバ42と、6本の入力光ファイバ43と、6本の入力光ファイバ44とを含んでおり、合計で19本の入力光ファイバを有している。これらの入力光ファイバ41~44の本数に対応して励起光源21~23が設けられている。
 図3に示すように、ブリッジファイバ90は、光軸に沿って一定の外径を有する円筒部46と、光軸に沿って次第に断面積が小さくなる絞り部47とを含んでいる。本実施形態におけるブリッジファイバ90は、内部にコア-クラッド構造を有しておらず、ブリッジファイバ90全体が光導波路となっている。ブリッジファイバ90の円筒部46は、入力光ファイバ41~44が融着接続される入射端面46Aを有している。
 出力光ファイバ45は、コア81と、コア81の周囲を覆うクラッド82と、クラッド82の周囲を覆う被覆83とを有している。出力光ファイバ45のコア81の外径は、ブリッジファイバ90の絞り部47の端面の外径以上である。この出力光ファイバ45のコア81には、ブリッジファイバ90の絞り部47が融着接続されている。出力光ファイバ45のクラッド82の屈折率はコア81の屈折率よりも低くなっており、コア81の内部には、ブリッジファイバ90から出射した光が伝搬する光導波路が形成されている。この出力光ファイバ45のコア81は、増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62と光学的に接続される。なお、ブリッジファイバ90との融着接続部の近傍では、出力光ファイバ45の被覆83が除去されている。
 このような構成の光コンバイナ40によれば、入力光ファイバ41~44のコアを伝搬する励起光は、円筒部46の端面からブリッジファイバ90に入射し、円筒部46及び絞り部47の外周面で反射しながらブリッジファイバ90の内部を伝搬して、絞り部47の端面から出力光ファイバ45のコア81に入射する。そして、出力光ファイバ45のコア81に入射した励起光は、光コンバイナ40の後流側に接続された増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62を伝搬する。
 ところで、希土類元素イオンが添加された増幅用光ファイバの励起光吸収率をA(dB/m)、増幅用光ファイバの長さをB(m)、励起光のパワーをPIn(W)とすると、増幅用光ファイバを透過する残留励起光のパワーは、以下の式(1)で表される。

 この式(1)から、励起光吸収率Aを高めるか、増幅用光ファイバの長さBを長くすると残留励起光のパワーを低減できることがわかる。
 励起光吸収率Aを高めるためには、添加する希土類元素イオンの濃度を高める、あるいは励起光の波長を希土類元素イオンの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長に合わせることが考えられるが、添加する希土類元素イオンの濃度を高め過ぎると、光ファイバの導波損失が上昇してファイバレーザの出力が低下するため、希土類元素イオンの添加濃度を高めるのには限界がある。また、半導体レーザ素子の製造上のバラツキにより、すべての半導体レーザ素子の励起光の波長を希土類元素イオンの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長に合わせることは困難である。例えば、イッテルビウム(Yb)を添加した光ファイバの場合には、図5に示すように、Yb添加ファイバの場合、Ybの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長(976nm)の帯域が狭く、すべてのレーザ素子の励起光の波長をこの帯域に合わせるためには、半導体レーザ素子の選別が必要となり、歩留まりが悪化してコストが上昇する。また、増幅用光ファイバの長さBを長くすると、非線形光学効果による誘導ラマン光が増大してファイバレーザの出力の安定性が損なわれてしまう。
 本発明者は、より効率的に増幅用光ファイバに励起光を吸収させて残留励起光を低減するために、光ファイバに対する励起光の入射角度と吸収量との関係及び励起光の波長と吸収率との関係に着目した。すなわち、上述したファイバレーザ装置1の増幅用光ファイバ12のコア61における励起光の吸収量は、励起光の内側クラッド62への入射角度にも依存している。図2に示す例では、励起光71,72は、増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62と外側クラッド63との界面で全反射して伝搬するが、入射角度の小さい励起光71よりも入射角度の大きな励起光72の方が、希土類元素イオンが添加されたコア61を通過する回数が多くなるため、励起光71よりも単位長さ当たりの吸収量が増える。
 励起光源から出射される励起光の波長が、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長からずれると、増幅用光ファイバ12における励起光の吸収量が少なくなるが、そのような励起光の増幅用光ファイバ12への入射角度を大きくすれば、波長のずれにより低下した吸収量を増やすことが可能である。したがって、本実施形態では、以下に述べるように、増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射する励起光P1~P3の入射角度を上述した光コンバイナ40により調整することで、増幅用光ファイバ12における励起光P1~P3の吸収が効率的に行われるようにしている。
 上述したように、光コンバイナ40の入力光ファイバ41~44からブリッジファイバ90に入射した光は絞り部47で反射するために、その伝搬方向が変化して出力光ファイバ45のコア81への入射角度が増大する。絞り部47における入射角度の増大率は、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心から離れた領域(例えば、図3の薄い塗り潰し領域R3,R4)に導入される励起光ほど大きくなり、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心領域(例えば、図3の濃い塗り潰し領域R1)に導入される励起光が最も小さい。このように入射角度が増大した励起光は、出力光ファイバ45の後流側に接続された増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に導入される。
 本実施形態の光コンバイナ40においては、図3及び図4に示すように、励起光源21からの励起光P1が伝搬する入力光ファイバ41の周囲に、励起光源22からの励起光P2が伝搬する6本の入力光ファイバ42が配置されており、これらの入力光ファイバ42の周囲に、励起光源23からの励起光P3が伝搬する12本の入力光ファイバ43,44が配置されている。すなわち、励起光源21からの励起光P1が伝搬する入力光ファイバ41は、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心領域R1(図3の濃い塗り潰し領域)に接続され、励起光源22からの励起光P2が伝搬する6本の入力光ファイバ42は、入射端面46Aの中心に対して中心領域R1よりも外側に位置する領域R2(図3の中程度の濃さの塗り潰し領域)に接続され、励起光源23からの励起光P3が伝搬する12本の入力光ファイバ43,44は、入射端面46Aの中心に対して領域R2よりも外側に位置する領域R3,R4(図3の薄い塗り潰し領域)に接続されている。
 上述したように、励起光源21からの励起光P1の波長λ1は、Ybの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長(図5参照)である976nmであり、励起光源22からの励起光P2の波長λ2は、このピーク波長から少しずれた973nmであり、励起光源23からの励起光P3の波長λ3は、さらにピーク波長からずれた970nmとなっている。したがって、増幅用光ファイバ12のコア61のYbに対する吸収率は、励起光P1が最も高く、その次に励起光P2が高く、励起光P3が最も低くなっている。
 本実施形態では、最も吸収率が高い976nmの波長λ1を有する励起光P1を伝搬する入力光ファイバ41を入射端面46Aの中心領域R1に接続することで、励起光P1~P3の中で最も吸収率が高い波長の励起光P1が、最も小さな入射角度で出力光ファイバ45のコア81及びその後流側の増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射するように構成している。また、吸収スペクトルのピーク波長から少しずれ、励起光P1よりも低い吸収率の波長λ2(=973nm)を有する励起光P2を伝搬する入力光ファイバ42を中心領域R1よりも外側の領域R2に接続することで、励起光P1の波長よりも吸収率が低い波長の励起光P2が、励起光P1の入射角度よりも大きな入射角度で出力光ファイバ45のコア81及びその後流側の増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射するように構成している。吸収スペクトルのピーク波長からさらにずれ、励起光P2よりも低い吸収率の波長λ3(=970nm)を有する励起光P3を伝搬する入力光ファイバ43,44を領域R2よりもさらに外側の領域R3,R4に接続することで、励起光P2の波長よりも吸収率が低い波長の励起光P3が、励起光P2の入射角度よりも大きな入射角度で出力光ファイバ45のコア81及びその後流側の増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射するように構成している。
 このように、本実施形態では、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心から相対的に遠い領域に接続される入力光ファイバに接続されており、吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光が相対的に大きい入射角度で増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射するように(増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に高い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心に相対的に近い領域に接続される入力光ファイバに接続されており、吸収率が相対的に高い波長の励起光が相対的に小さい入射角度で増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射するように)ファイバレーザ装置1が構成されている。したがって、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光が、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンが添加されたコア61を通過する回数が増えるため(図2参照)、増幅用光ファイバ12におけるこの励起光の吸収量を増やすことができる。この結果、複数の励起光源21~23の励起光の波長が異なっていても、増幅用光ファイバ12に対する励起光の吸収量を高いレベルで均一化することが可能となり、増幅用光ファイバ12における励起光の吸収を効率的に行うことができる。このため、希土類元素イオンの添加濃度を増加したり、増幅用光ファイバ12を長くしたりすることなく、残留励起光を低減することができ、増幅用光ファイバ12における導波損失の増加や誘導ラマン散乱光の増大という問題が生じない。さらに、励起光源21~23に使用される半導体レーザ素子から出射される励起光が、レーザ素子の製造上のバラツキによって希土類元素イオンの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長からずれた波長を有していても、そのようなレーザ素子を有効に利用して残留励起光を低減することができるので、ファイバレーザ装置1の製造コストを低減することもできる。
 また、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光が相対的に大きい入射角度で増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射するようにファイバレーザ装置1を構成することで、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する単位長さ当たりの吸収量がすべての励起光P1~P3で同一になるようにしてもよい。この場合には、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する励起光P1~P3の吸収量をより高いレベルで均一化することが可能となるので、増幅用光ファイバ12における励起光P1~P3の吸収をより効率的に行うことができ、増幅用光ファイバ12よりも後流側での残留励起光を効果的に低減することができる。これによって、ファイバレーザ装置1の信頼性が高まる。
 また、励起光源21~23の中で増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が最も低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源(本実施形態では励起光P3を出射する励起光源23)が、入力光ファイバ41~44の中でブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心から最も離れた領域(本実施形態では領域R4)に接続される入力光ファイバ(本実施形態では入力光ファイバ44)に接続されることが好ましい。この場合には、全励起光P1~P3の中で最も吸収率の低い波長の励起光が、全励起光P1~P3の中で最も大きな入射角度で増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射することとなる。
 さらに、励起光源21~23の中で増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が最も高い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源(本実施形態では励起光P1を出射する励起光源21)が、入力光ファイバ41~44の中でブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心に最も近い領域(本実施形態では領域R1)に接続される入力光ファイバ(本実施形態では入力光ファイバ41)に接続されることが好ましい。この場合には、全励起光P1~P3の中で最も吸収率の高い波長の励起光が、全励起光P1~P3の中で最も小さな入射角度で増幅用光ファイバ12の内側クラッド62に入射することとなる。
 上述した実施形態では、すべての励起光源21~23について、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心から相対的に遠い領域に接続される入力光ファイバに接続されているが、励起光源21~23の一部についてのみ、増幅用光ファイバ12の希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心から相対的に遠い領域に接続される入力光ファイバに接続されていてもよい。
 また、透過する光の波長を狭帯域化可能な波長安定化素子を用いてそれぞれの励起光源21~23から出射される励起光P1~P3の波長を調整してもよい。例えば、所定の格子間隔で屈折率が周期的に変化するVolume Bragg Gating(VBG)と呼ばれる波長安定化素子をそれぞれの励起光源21~23のレーザ素子から出射されるレーザ光の光路上に配置してもよい。このような波長安定化素子を用いることにより、励起光源21~23内のレーザ素子の出射端面と波長安定化素子との間に外部共振器が形成され、それぞれの波長安定化素子の格子間隔に応じた波長帯域に狭帯域化された励起光が波長安定化素子から出射され、励起光源21~23から出射される励起光の波長を調整することができる。
 上述した実施形態では、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心領域R1に接続される入力光ファイバ41には、励起光源21から波長976nmの励起光P1が導入され、入射端面46Aの中心に対して中心領域R1よりも外側の領域R2に接続される入力光ファイバ42には、励起光源22から波長973nmの励起光P2が導入され、入射端面46Aの中心に対して領域R2よりも外側の領域R3,R4に接続される入力光ファイバ43,44には、励起光源23から波長970nmの励起光P3が導入される例を説明したが、これらの励起光の波長はこの例に限られるものではない。例えば、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心領域R1に接続される入力光ファイバ41に、励起光源21から波長976nmの励起光を導入し、中心領域R1よりも外側の領域R2に接続される入力光ファイバ42に、励起光源22から波長972nmの励起光を導入し、領域R2よりも外側の領域R3,R4に接続される入力光ファイバ43,44に、励起光源23から波長970nmの励起光を導入してもよい。あるいは、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心領域R1に接続される入力光ファイバ41には励起光源を接続せずに、中心領域R1よりも外側の領域R2に接続される入力光ファイバ42に、励起光源22から波長976nmの励起光を導入し、領域R2よりも外側の領域R3,R4に接続される入力光ファイバ43,44に、励起光源23から波長915nmの励起光を導入してもよい。
 また、上述の実施形態では、励起光源21~23から出射される励起光P1~P3の波長のすべてが、Yb添加ファイバの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長の976nm以下である例を説明したが、励起光P1~P3の波長がYb添加ファイバのピーク波長以上(例えば977nmなど)であってもよい。さらに、励起光P1~P3の波長の一部がピーク波長以下であって、他の波長がピーク波長以上であってもよい。また、上述の実施形態では、Yb添加ファイバの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長として976nmを用いた例を説明したが、976nmのピーク波長に代えて915nmのピーク波長を用いることもできる。また、これら2つのピーク波長を組み合わせて用いることもできる。また、これらの励起光源21~23から出射される励起光P1~P3の波長の差を5nm以上設けてもよい。ここで、本明細書における「ピーク波長帯域」は、最も高い吸収率を示す波長から±3nmの幅を有する波長帯域を意味するものである。なお、複数の励起光源21~23から出射される励起光の波長が1つのピーク波長帯域に入っていてもよい。
 上述の実施形態では、19本の入力光ファイバ41~44及び19個の励起光源21~23を用いた例を説明したが、入力光ファイバの個数及び励起光源の個数はこれに限られるものではない。また、複数の励起光源の波長の組み合わせも任意である。例えば31本の入力光ファイバを用いた場合にも、同様に構成することができる。また、例えば、7本の入力光ファイバを用いる場合には、図6に示すように、ブリッジファイバ90の円筒部46の中心領域に接続される1本の入力光ファイバ141に、Yb添加ファイバの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長である976nmの波長を有する励起光を出射する励起光源を接続し、中心領域よりも外側に位置する領域に接続される6本の入力光ファイバ142に、ピーク波長からずれた波長972nmの励起光を出射する励起光源を接続してもよい。あるいは、中心領域に接続される1本の入力光ファイバ141に、ピーク波長である976nmの波長を有する励起光を出射する励起光源を接続し、中心領域の外側に位置する領域に接続される6本の入力光ファイバ142に、別のピーク波長である波長915nmの励起光を出射する励起光源を接続してもよい。
 また、10本の入力光ファイバを用いる場合には、図7に示すように、ブリッジファイバ90の入射端面46Aの中心領域に接続される2本の入力光ファイバ241に、Yb添加ファイバの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長である976nmの波長を有する励起光を出射する励起光源を接続し、入射端面46Aの中心に2番目に近い領域に接続される2本の入力光ファイバ242に、ピーク波長からずれた波長974nmの励起光を出射する励起光源を接続し、入射端面46Aの中心に3番目に近い領域に接続される4本の入力光ファイバ243に、波長972nmの励起光を出射する励起光源を接続し、入射端面46Aの中心から最も遠い領域に接続される2本の入力光ファイバ244に、波長915nmの励起光を出射する励起光源を接続してもよい。この場合において、2本の入力光ファイバ242のうち一方を励起光源に接続しない構成としてもよい。
 これまで本発明の好ましい実施形態について説明したが、本発明は上述の実施形態に限定されず、その技術的思想の範囲内において種々異なる形態にて実施されてよいことは言うまでもない。
 以上述べたように、本発明の一態様によれば、励起光源からの励起光を増幅用光ファイバで効率的に吸収させて残留励起光を低減することができる信頼性の高いファイバレーザ装置が提供される。このファイバレーザ装置は、希土類元素イオンが添加されたコアと、上記希土類元素イオンを励起する励起光が伝搬可能なクラッド層とを有する増幅用光ファイバと、上記励起光を生成可能な複数の励起光源と、上記複数の励起光源からの上記励起光を結合して上記増幅用光ファイバに出力する光コンバイナとを備える。上記光コンバイナは、上記複数の励起光源のそれぞれと接続される複数の入力光ファイバと、上記増幅用光ファイバに接続される出力光ファイバと、上記複数の入力光ファイバから上記出力光ファイバに向かって光軸方向に次第に断面積が小さくなる絞り部を含むブリッジファイバとを有する。上記複数の励起光源は、第1の励起光を出射する第1の励起光源と、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が上記第1の励起光の波長よりも低い波長の第2の励起光を出射する第2の励起光源とを含む。上記ブリッジファイバは、上記複数の入力光ファイバが接続される入射端面を有する。上記複数の入力光ファイバは、上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の第1の領域に接続される第1の入力光ファイバと、上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に対して上記第1の領域よりも外側に位置する第2の領域に接続される第2の入力光ファイバとを含む。上記第1の励起光源は、上記第1の入力光ファイバに接続され、上記第2の励起光源は、上記第2の入力光ファイバに接続される。上記希土類元素は、イッテルビウム、エルビウム、ツリウム、又はネオジムであってもよい。上記複数の入力光ファイバの数は7、10、19、又は31であってもよい。
 このような構成によれば、増幅用光ファイバの希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が第1の励起光の波長よりも低い波長の第2の励起光を出射する第2の励起光源が、ブリッジファイバの入射端面の中心に対して第1の領域よりも外側に位置する第2の領域に接続される第2の入力光ファイバに接続されるので、第2の励起光が第1の励起高の入射角度よりも大きい入射角度で増幅用光ファイバに入射することとなる。このため、第2の励起光が増幅用光ファイバの希土類元素イオンが添加されたコア領域を通過する回数が増えるので、増幅用光ファイバにおける第2の励起光の吸収量を増やすことができる。したがって、増幅用光ファイバに対する第1の励起光と第2の励起光の吸収量を高いレベルで均一化することが可能となるので、希土類元素イオンの添加濃度を増加したり、増幅用光ファイバを長くしたりすることなく、増幅用光ファイバで吸収されずに伝搬する残留励起光を効果的に低減することができる。
 上記複数の励起光源は、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が上記第2の励起光の波長よりも低い波長の第3の励起光を出射する第3の励起光源をさらに含んでいてもよい。上記複数の入力光ファイバは、上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に対して上記第2の領域よりも外側に位置する第3の領域に接続される第3の入力光ファイバをさらに含んでいてもよい。この場合において、上記第3の励起光源は、上記第3の入力光ファイバに接続される。これにより、増幅用光ファイバに対する第1の励起光、第2の励起光、及び第3の励起光の吸収量を高いレベルで均一化することが可能となるので、増幅用光ファイバで吸収されずに伝搬する残留励起光を効果的に低減することができる。
 増幅用光ファイバにおいてより効果的に励起光を吸収させるために、上記複数の励起光源の中で上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が最も低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、上記複数の入力光ファイバの中で上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心から最も離れた領域に接続される上記入力光ファイバに接続されることが好ましい。また、上記複数の励起光源の中で上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が最も高い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、上記複数の入力光ファイバの中で上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に最も近い領域に接続される上記入力光ファイバに接続されることが好ましい。
 上記複数の励起光源のすべての励起光源に関して、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い励起光を出射する励起光源が、上記複数の入力光ファイバの中で上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に対して相対的に外側に位置する領域に接続される上記入力光ファイバに接続されることが好ましい。また、上記複数の励起光源のすべての励起光源に関して、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に高い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、上記複数の入力光ファイバの中で上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に相対的に近い領域に接続される上記入力光ファイバに接続されることが好ましい。
 上記複数の励起光源から出射される励起光の波長及び上記複数の励起光源が接続される上記入力光ファイバは、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンに対する単位長さ当たりの吸収量が上記複数の励起光源から出射される全励起光で同一になるように設定されていてもよい。この場合には、増幅用光ファイバに対する全励起光の吸収量を高いレベルで均一化することが可能となるので、増幅用光ファイバで吸収されずに伝搬する残留励起光をより効果的に低減することができる。
 上記複数の励起光源のうち少なくとも1つの励起光源は、上記増幅用光ファイバの上記希土類元素イオンの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長帯域の波長を有する励起光を出射するものであってもよい。この場合において、上記ピーク波長帯域の波長を有する励起光を出射する上記少なくとも1つの励起光源は、上記複数の入力光ファイバの中で上記ブリッジファイバの上記入射端面の中心に最も近い領域に接続される上記入力光ファイバに接続されることが好ましい。
 上記第1の励起光の波長と上記第2の励起光の波長との差は5nmよりも大きくてもよい。また、上記複数の励起光源のうち少なくとも1つの励起光源は、レーザ素子から出射される光の波長を狭帯域化可能な波長安定化素子を含んでいてもよい。
 本発明によれば、増幅用光ファイバの希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が第1の励起光の波長よりも低い波長の第2の励起光を出射する第2の励起光源が、ブリッジファイバの入射端面の中心から外側に位置する第2の領域に接続される第2の入力光ファイバに接続されるので、第2の励起光が第1の励起高の入射角度よりも大きい入射角度で増幅用光ファイバに入射することとなる。このため、第2の励起光が増幅用光ファイバの希土類元素イオンが添加されたコア領域を通過する回数が増えるので、増幅用光ファイバにおける第2の励起光の吸収量を増やすことができる。したがって、増幅用光ファイバに対する第1の励起光と第2の励起光の吸収量を高いレベルで均一化することが可能となるので、希土類元素イオンの添加濃度を増加したり、増幅用光ファイバを長くしたりすることなく、増幅用光ファイバで吸収されずに伝搬する残留励起光を効果的に低減することができる。

  1.  希土類元素イオンが添加されたコアと、前記希土類元素イオンを励起する励起光が伝搬可能なクラッド層とを有する増幅用光ファイバと、
     前記励起光を生成可能な複数の励起光源と、
     前記複数の励起光源からの前記励起光を結合して前記増幅用光ファイバに出力する光コンバイナと
    を備え、
     前記光コンバイナは、
      前記複数の励起光源のそれぞれと接続される複数の入力光ファイバと、
      前記増幅用光ファイバに接続される出力光ファイバと、
      前記複数の入力光ファイバから前記出力光ファイバに向かって光軸方向に次第に断面積が小さくなる絞り部を含むブリッジファイバと
    を有し、
     前記複数の励起光源は、
      第1の励起光を出射する第1の励起光源と、
      前記増幅用光ファイバの前記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が前記第1の励起光の波長よりも低い波長の第2の励起光を出射する第2の励起光源と
    を含み、
     前記ブリッジファイバは、前記複数の入力光ファイバが接続される入射端面を有し、

  3.  前記複数の励起光源の中で前記増幅用光ファイバの前記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が最も低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、前記複数の入力光ファイバの中で前記ブリッジファイバの前記入射端面の中心から最も離れた領域に接続される前記入力光ファイバに接続される、請求項1又は2に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  4.  前記複数の励起光源の中で前記増幅用光ファイバの前記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が最も高い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、前記複数の入力光ファイバの中で前記ブリッジファイバの前記入射端面の中心に最も近い領域に接続される前記入力光ファイバに接続される、請求項1から3のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  5.  前記複数の励起光源のすべての励起光源に関して、前記増幅用光ファイバの前記希土類元素イオンに対する吸収率が相対的に低い波長の励起光を出射する励起光源が、前記複数の入力光ファイバの中で前記ブリッジファイバの前記入射端面の中心に対して相対的に外側に位置する領域に接続される前記入力光ファイバに接続される、請求項1から4のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  6.  前記複数の励起光源から出射される励起光の波長及び前記複数の励起光源が接続される前記入力光ファイバは、前記増幅用光ファイバの前記希土類元素イオンに対する単位長さ当たりの吸収量が前記複数の励起光源から出射される全励起光で同一になるように設定される、請求項1から5のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  7.  前記複数の励起光源のうち少なくとも1つの励起光源は、前記増幅用光ファイバの前記希土類元素イオンの吸収スペクトルのピーク波長帯域の波長を有する励起光を出射し、
     前記ピーク波長帯域の波長を有する励起光を出射する前記少なくとも1つの励起光源は、前記複数の入力光ファイバの中で前記ブリッジファイバの前記入射端面の中心に最も近い領域に接続される前記入力光ファイバに接続される、
    請求項1から6のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  8.  前記第1の励起光の波長と前記第2の励起光の波長との差は5nmよりも大きい、請求項1から7のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  9.  前記複数の励起光源のうち少なくとも1つの励起光源は、レーザ素子から出射される光の波長を狭帯域化可能な波長安定化素子を含む、請求項1から8のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  10.  前記希土類元素はイッテルビウムである、請求項1から9のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
  11.  前記複数の入力光ファイバの数は7、10、19、又は31である、請求項1から10のいずれか一項に記載のファイバレーザ装置。
