Definitions
- Absorbent composition device containing the absorbent composition and method for depleting carbon dioxide from gas mixtures
- the invention relates to an absorbent composition containing at least one alkaline earth hydroxide and water, the use thereof, a device containing the absorbent composition and a method for depleting carbon dioxide (CO2) from gas mixtures, in particular breathing gas, using the absorbents -Composition.
- CO2 carbon dioxide
- Removing or reducing gaseous pollutants from gas flows is a material separation process. Such separation processes are particularly important in the field of personal respiratory protection.
- Absorbent compositions in filters or filter inserts in combination with respiratory masks, respiratory masks, escape hoods, regeneration respiratory protective devices etc. protect the wearer from vapors and gases that are hazardous to health.
- the pollutants are either adsorbed in the absorbent composition or converted into harmless substances and / or chemically bound by chemical reactions.
- the absorbent compositions are also used in the treatment of breathing gas in respirators or regeneration respirators.
- the carbon dioxide can be depleted using alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, for example according to the following reaction scheme:
- DE 3721317 A1 discloses absorbent compositions which, in addition to Ca (OH) 2, optionally contain sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and iron-II and iron-III salts as transition metal salts. These compositions have been proposed for the removal of pollutants such as HCl, HF, SO2, SO3, NO2, HCN, phenols or carboxylic acids from exhaust gases, but not for binding CO2 from breathing air, and they are also not suitable for this , since these are dried and used in powder form. Especially with respiratory protection devices, a small design is generally desired, since such devices are often worn on men for longer periods of time, should not disturb the user and should not interfere with the escape due to the weight and / or design. It is also desirable that the respiratory protection device can be stored or used even when the temperature is below zero and has sufficient functionality or adsorption.
- NaOH sodium hydroxide
- iron-II and iron-III salts as transition metal salts.
- LiOH Lithium hydroxide
- the absorbent composition comprises
- At least one alkaline earth metal hydroxide in particular at least Ca (OH) 2;
- the absorbent composition is intended for the absorption of at least carbon dioxide.
- the alkali hydroxide (b1)) is preferably LiOH or NaOH or a mixture of both.
- alkali metal hydroxide (b1)) and alkali metal chloride and / or alkaline earth metal chloride (b2)) are used together (b1) and b2)), in another only b1) is not used but b2) or is only b2) but not b1 ) used.
- the alkali and / or alkaline earth chloride (b2)) is preferably NaCl, LiCl, calcium chloride or mixtures thereof and in particular calcium chloride.
- an aluminum oxide c2) such as boehmite or Al2O3, in particular Al2O3, can also be used.
- the transition metal salt c1) is not used, but the aluminum oxide c2)).
- the presence of a sufficient amount of water in the absorbent composition is important for the present invention since it also serves as a reaction mediator for the reaction with CO2.
- An absorbent composition comprising at least: • at least 65% by weight, in particular 73 to 87% by weight, at least one alkaline earth metal hydroxide (a)), preferably calcium hydroxide in each case;
- the at least one alkali and alkaline earth chloride (b2)) is preferably NaCl, LiCl, calcium chloride or mixtures thereof and in particular calcium chloride;
- the other or other components can e.g. Be binders that support the granulation process.
- Be binders that support the granulation process.
- examples include superabsorbents, cellulose; Alkali silicates; Bentonites, sulfates e.g. B. CaS04 or clays.
- the binders can e.g. with 1 to 15% by weight, preferably with 3 to 7% by weight in the composition.
- the above-mentioned proportions preferably add up to 100% by weight.
- Ca (OH) 2 (a)), LiCl (b2)) and NaCl (b2)) are preferably used together.
- the absorbent composition is in the form of granules.
- the granules ensure a sufficiently large reaction surface for gas cleaning with a sufficiently low flow resistance of a filter cartridge or cartridge filled with the absorbent composition. see.
- the use of the absorbent in granular form ensures that the breathing resistance is low and that there is no clumping in the cold (ie below 0 ° C) or as a result of the reaction.
- each granulate is composed essentially the same as another granulate, i.e. the granules are homogeneous with one another and contain mixtures which essentially correspond to the total mixture in terms of their proportions.
- the granular shape can be irregular, hemispherical, spherical or cylindrical. Hollow cylinders are also possible.
- the granules preferably have an average diameter (weight average) of 0.5 to 6 mm, preferably 2 to 4 mm, each determined by means of sieve analysis (DIN 66165).
- the granules are further identified as follows:
- the absorbent composition instead of the granulate form, it is also possible to pull the absorbent composition onto porous bodies or to incorporate the granulate or a homogeneous mass in layers into a winding body, so that the granulate or the homogeneous mass is distributed in a spiral in plan view along the winding axis.
- the winding body is preferably flowed through in the direction of the winding axis.
- the absorbent composition is produced according to a configuration in such a way that the required alkaline earth metal hydroxide is mixed with water or aqueous solvent. is added in which the remaining chemicals are dissolved.
- Alkaline earth oxides can also be used, which then convert into the corresponding alkaline earth hydroxide.
- the alkaline earth hydroxide is the active species.
- a further method of production consists in first adding water or sodium hydroxide to the alkaline earth hydroxide or oxide and then kneading in the chemicals, either as a solution or as a dry powder.
- a paste is formed, which is then shaped to the preferred granule size by a granulation process and then dried to the desired water content. It can also be completely dried and then moistened again to the desired water content.
- the absorbent composition is used in the treatment of breathing gas with removal of CO2 in respiratory protective devices or respirators, such as short-term rescue devices, long-term respiratory protective devices or diving devices.
- the breathing apparatus usually contains at least one breathing circuit, which has a mouthpiece or a hood, a breathing tube, a filter housing, a breathing bag and a gas supply.
- the filter housing contains the absorbent, the amount depends on the desired operating time, for 15 minutes this is approx. 360 mL, for example. These are preferably 150 to 800 mL in relation to a breathing apparatus.
- the filter housing generally has a retention system for the granulate, which allows breathing air to flow through but prevents the absorption composition from escaping.
- the absorbent composition can be introduced into the filter housing in the form of interchangeable cartridges or can also be present as granules in the form of a bed in the filter housing.
- Short-term rescue devices are used to provide a person with air that is independent of outside air in an emergency. A safe area must then be reached during this time. Short term is usually 15-30 minutes, but can go up to an hour.
- the absorbent composition can also be used in other types of circulatory devices, such as long-term breathing apparatus or diving equipment, in particular those in which there are increased demands on the absorption behavior (e.g. refrigeration applications).
- circulatory devices such as long-term breathing apparatus or diving equipment, in particular those in which there are increased demands on the absorption behavior (e.g. refrigeration applications).
- the invention is also used in breathing circuit devices and in anesthesia.
- Breathing systems are used here in which the breathing gas circulates and, after removal / depletion of the exhaled carbon dioxide, is fed back to the breathing person.
- breathing circuit devices are circuit diving devices, also called “rebreather”.
- Breathing circuit devices can be closed or semi-closed.
- Half-closed breathing circuit devices are those in which the used oxygen is replaced with the help of a (mixed) gas source.
- Breathing circuit devices are used in fire brigades, for pits, but also as escape devices, diving devices or in submarines. Breathing gas can be saved by routing the breathing air in a circuit using C02 absorbents. This is particularly important for use in anesthesia. Volatile anesthetics are added in anesthesia systems. It is necessary to deplete the carbon dioxide produced and exhaled by the user in the circulated breathing air, especially without changing the concentration of anesthetics.
- a rebreather is a device that partially or completely saves and reuses a user's breath. Even with physical exertion, a person consumes only a fraction of the oxygen inhaled. A rebreather recirculates unused oxygen in the system and replenishes the oxygen consumed by the wearer. This allows a very small oxygen tank to last much longer than is possible with conventional breathing apparatus.
- Main components of typical rebreathers include a gas supply, an oxygen control, a counter-lung and a carbon dioxide removal system in the form of the absorbent composition described above.
- the granules obtained had the following grain size distribution (determined by sieve analysis):
- the service life measured in accordance with DIN EN 13974_2003 is shown in FIG. In Fig. 2, the service life is measured according to DIN EN for the same products 13974_2003 at - 15 ° C.
- the standard soda lime cannot be shown because it breaks through immediately at the temperature (no CO2 absorption).

Description
CÖ2 + H20 -> H2CO3
H2CO3 + 2 NaOH -> Na2C03 + 2 H2O
Na2C03 + Ca(OH)2 -> CaCOs + 2 NaOH
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 -> CaCOs + H2O + Wärme AHR = -113 kJ/mol
a) zumindest ein Erdalkalihydroxid, insbesondere zumindest Ca(OH)2;
und
b1 ) zumindest ein Alkalihydroxid und/oder
b2) zumindest ein Alkalichlorid und/oder Erdalkalichlorid;
und
c1 ) zumindest ein Übergangsmetallsalz und/oder
c2) zumindest ein Aluminiumoxid; und
und
d) Wasser.
• mindestens 65 Gew.%, insbesondere 73 bis 87 Gew.%, zumindest ein Erdal- kalihydroxid (a)), vorzugsweise jeweils Calciumhydroxid;
oder nur NaOH ist, und wobei das zumindest eine Alkali- und Erdalkalichlorid (b2)) vorzugsweise NaCI, LiCI, Calciumchlorid oder deren Mischungen und insbesondere Calciumchlorid ist;
In Anästhesiesyste- men werden volatile Anästhetika zugegeben.
