Description

A METHOD FOR PRINTING GENERIC IMAGES ON LEATHER SHEETS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the technical sector concerning methods for printing generic images on leather sheets.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
In the following the term“generic images” is taken to mean, for example, a generic writing which is repeated, or the text of a letter as illustrated in figure 1 , or the printing of a newspaper, or a series of identical images, such as, for example, logos, geometric or floral figures or the like, or combinations thereof which are repeated in order to be equidistant and aligned according to a transversal axis and a longitudinal axis.
At present, printing on leather sheets of generic images, for example “designs”, which are continuously repeated or which are repeated in a defined order, is carried out by positioning the leather sheet, on a work plane of a printing machine.
The printing head of the above-described machine, appropriately controlled by a control system, begins printing, starting from a side of the work plane then to proceed over the whole surface thereof and printing both on the external surface of the leather sheet and on the surface of the plane that is not occupied by the leather sheet, as schematically illustrated in figure 1.
This method leads to a waste of colorant substances used to print on the leather sheet, as the printing head prints indistinctly on both the work plane and the surface of the leather sheet.
Following the removal of the printed leather sheet from the work plane, an operator will clean the plane of the colorant substance and prevent a subsequent leather sheet to be printed from being fouled by the colorant substance present on the plane, which will make it partly unusable for realising articles.
The cleaning operation of the plane has a negative effect on the work cycle for the printing of a plurality of leather sheets, as the printing machine will be inoperative for the whole time that the operator is cleaning the plane.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention has the aim of providing a method for printing generic images on leather sheets which obviates the drawbacks mentioned in the foregoing and in particular a method enabling printing generic images on only the surface of the leather sheet.
Another aim of the invention consists in providing a method distinguished by operating steps that are particularly simple and rapid, which further enables obtaining a finished product of proven quality.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a method which enables minimising the time required for printing only the surface of a series of leather sheets.
The above-mentioned advantages of the invention are obtained according to the contents of the claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The characteristics of the invention are specified in the following with particular reference to a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment, with reference to the accompanying tables of drawings, in which:
- figure 1 schematically illustrates a view from above of the printing of generic images on leather sheets as in the state of the art;
- figure 2 schematically illustrates a view from above of a printing machine on which a leather article to be printed has been position according to a method for printing generic images of the present invention;
- - figure 3 is a schematic illustration of a block diagram of some significant steps of the described method;
- figures 4A, 4B, 4C schematically illustrate some of the steps;
- figure 5 schematically illustrates the above-described printing machine as well as the leather article on which generic images have been printed.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
With reference to the accompanying tables of drawings, reference number 1 denotes a printing machine of known type having a work plane (10) and a printing head (11), and 2 denotes a leather article on which generic images, memorised in a processor (E) (figure 3) are to be printed.
Stored in the processor (E) is a work file (FL) comprising at least an image (I) defined by a series of components, being, by way of example, texts in written and/or printed form, and/or logos, and/or photographs, and/or drawings of various type, and/or geometric and/or floral figures, the components following one another in a continuous or discontinuous way (figure 4A).
Reference numeral 3 denotes an optical reader, positioned above the work plane (10) of the printing machine (1) and connected to the processor (E).
The method of the invention includes random positioning of a leather article (2) to be printed, having a profile and size and spread on the printing plane (10) of the printing machine (1).
The optical reader (3) detects the dimension and border (C) of the leather sheet resting on the work plane (10), and the positioning and orientation thereof with respect thereto: this representation is transmitted to the processor, which by means of known systems transforms the corresponding information into a leather article file (F*) wherein the positioning and the orientation of the leather sheet is identified with respect to the work plane and the border (C), which delimits the surface and the shape of the leather sheet, internally of which the memorised generic image is to be printed.
The method of the invention further includes: creating a service file (Fs) comprising a portion (P) of the generic image (I) of an extension such as to contain the area of the leather article (2) delimited by the border (C), the border (C) being indicated with a broken line (figure 4B); creating an operating file (F0), memorised in the processor (E), obtained from the service file by eliminating the fraction of the portion of generic image at least external of the border (C) of the leather article (see figure 4C).
The information originating from the operating file (F0) and the leather article file (F*) are loaded, via an RIP (Raster Image Processor) program of known type, in a print layout (F) (or file). Following the creation of this file, the printing head (11) (figure 2) of the printing machine (1), managed by the RIP, is activated and is then controlled, for example by means of a Cartesian reference system with an origin coinciding with the origin of the work plane (10) on which the leather article is stretched in order for the contents of the operating file (F0) (see figure 5) to be printed thereon.
The proposed method is particularly advantageous, as it enables printing generic images exclusively on the surface of leather articles positioned on the work plane (10) of a printing machine (1).
Following the positioning of the leather article on the work plane (10), the method enables detecting the size, the orientation, the border of the leather sheet and, with a processing of the information, combined with the information in the operating file (F0), controlling the printing head (11) to carry out the printing of generic images on the whole surface of the leather article within the border (C) detected by the optical reader (3) (figure 3).
With this method, therefore, only the necessary quantity of ink necessary for printing on the surface of the leather article will be used, thus avoiding the useless and expensive spending of colorant substances necessary today in printing on leather articles.
Further, the fouling of the work plane with the colorant substances is avoided, thus optimising the times required for the consecutive printing of a plurality of leather articles.
This method further makes the printing machine very versatile, since as well as printing exclusively on the surface of a leather article it enables printing on a plurality of leather articles of different formats having regular or irregular borders.
It is specified that the work plane (10) of the printing machine can include a series of holes connected to an aspiration source utilisable in a case in which there is a need to print on a leather article with a thickness of a few millimetres, for example leather. The leather article includes curvatures deriving from the rigidity of the material, so following positioning thereof on the work plane (10) it is possible to activate the aspiration source in such a way that the leather article is brought, in all its parts, perfectly into adherence to the work plane and, consequently, the printing head, following the detecting of the position, orientation and border of the leather article, can print perfectly on the whole surface thereof.
In definition, a generic image (I) (figure 4A) is used, from which a portion (P) is “trimmed away” (figure 4B); an external fraction is cut from the portion (P), external of the border (C) (figure 4C) that is printed on the leather article (2) (figure 5).
In accordance with these steps, the generic image (I) can be used to print a series of leather articles.
In other terms, one image is not used for each leather sheet to be printed, but the same image on which the operation as described in the foregoing is used. In a variant of the method, the operating file (F0) can be defined by narrowing the portion (P) of generic image (I) so that the border (C) of the leather article (2) circumscribes the portion; this can be obtained in a known way, for example by reducing either the dimensions of the component of the generic image and/or the mutual distance between the components themselves.
It is understood that the above has been described by way of non-limiting example and that any modifications of detail, and variants of form and dimensions of the described elements, and any technical-functional variants of the steps of the method are understood to fall within the same protective scope, as claimed in the following.
