Description
Holder and vehicle window with holder
Technical Domain of the Invention
The present invention relates to a holder and a vehicle window with a holder, particularly, a holder to be attached to a vehicle window and at the same time to be attached to a lifting device for lifting and lowering the vehicle window, and a vehicle window which is provided with such a holder.
Background of the Invention
In a vehicle, some windows are movable especially side windows. The movement is given by a lifting device. The position of the window in its closed position is important to avoid sealing issues and whistling noises.
To avoid these problems and to fulfill the requirements of OEM’s, movable windows mounted in the vehicle have to be positioned correctly in the vehicle. These problems can be even more critical when the windows are not guided during lifting and lowering in an guiding structure. In a convertible vehicle, windows are not guided but they have to be in their correct position in space to be coupled with the sliding roof.
Requirements of vehicle makers give a shape, dimensions and tolerances for the window itself but also the position of the window in the space when this window is mounted in a vehicle and is lifted at his closing position. This position is defined by points in the space and depends of the design of the vehicle body and the position of the sliding roof.
Due to tolerances of the shape and dimensions of the window, tolerances of fixation in the holder and others tolerances accepted by the vehicle maker, it’s difficult to position the window in the correct position after that the window is attached on the holder and without tuning this position on the lifting device when the window is mounted on the car body via the lifting device.
Heretofore, a holder is attached to a vehicle window and at the same time is attached to a lifting device for lifting and lowering the vehicle window. These known holders are rigid and the window is attached on the holder. The attachment on the holder can be done by gluing, clipping or screwing. Due to that attachment, once the window is fixed in the holder and mounted on the vehicle, it’s impossible to reposition correctly the window if it is not well positioned.
To adapt the position of the window before gluing, the window can be forced into the holder with a certain angle and maintained in with this angle during the gluing. A lot of manipulations and settings are compulsory to fix the window in the holder in a this position. And once the window is glued it is not possible to change the angle formed between the holder and the glazing to compensate remaining tolerances.
The invention provides a solution to overcome the above described issues.
The following description relates to a vehicle window panel but it is understood that the invention may be applicable to other fields like transportation, architectural,...
Summary of the Invention
The invention relates to a holder to be attached to a vehicle window.
According to the invention, the holder comprises at least
- An upper part able to be attached to the vehicle window,
- A lower part able to be attached to a lifting device for lifting and lowering the vehicle window;
- A mean for articulating the upper part and the lower part. The mean for articulating the upper part and the lower part of the holder allows to adapt the alignment between the two parts in order to create an angle between the two parts. The angle is measured by the misalignment between the upper part and the lower part. Preferably, the mean for articulating the upper part and the lower part could be a hinge to facilitate the misalignment between the lower and the upper parts of the holder.
In one embodiment, the hinge comprises a male element and a female element; the male element is a linear protuberance and the female element is a partially opened channel surrounding the male element. One of the male element or the female element is
on the upper part and the other element is on the lower part of the holder to reduce the number of manufactured parts as well as the cost.
The mean for articulating the upper part and the lower part could be at least a ball joint, to match the curve of the vehicle window and to facilitate the misalignment between the lower and the upper parts of the holder.
Preferably, the rotation of the means for articulating the upper part and the lower part, meaning the angle of misalignment, is at most io°, preferably at most 6° to facilitate handling and installation. A limited angle of misalignment limits the upper edge of the window to shift about at most 40mm preferably at most 20mm depending of the design and the size of the window. The upper edge of the window is defined as the opposite edge of the window from the edge fixed in a holder.
The holder comprises also at least one fixing mean for locking the articulation in a determined angle to correct the position in the space of the upper edge of a vehicle window. It means that the means for articulating is locked with a misalignment between the upper part and the lower part corresponding to the determined angle. This misalignment allows the window to be correctly positioned in the space when this window is mounted in a vehicle and is lifted at its closing position.
Preferably, the at least one fixing mean is a mechanical fixing means to unlock and lock the means for articulating in another misalignment if the position of the window is not correct and preferably the mechanical fixing means is a screw. In one embodiment, the at least one fixing means could be a chemical fixing means to ensure the locking of the means for articulating time and preferably a glue.
More preferably, a chemical consolidation means is added to the at least one mechanical fixing means, preferably a glue, to ensure the locking of the means for articulating time.
Preferably, the upper part is an U-shaped cross section part for fitting the vehicle window in place.
More preferably, an elastically deformable element is added in the U-shaped cross section part of the upper part to facilitate the fixing of the window in the upper part. Preferably, the window is fixed by clamping in the upper part and more preferably, a glue is added to fix in time the window.
In one embodiment, the U-shaped cross section part of the upper part has a stopper element to ensure the thickness of glue. In case for example of a single-component glue, a glue thickness between o.6mm and 1.2mm allows to maximize the gluing effect and to avoid shearing, too much flexibility and elongation of the glue.
In one embodiment, the upper part and/or the lower part are made of metal such as steel, stainless steel, metal alloys.
Preferably, the upper part and/or the lower part comprises aluminum. The aluminum can have some impurities such Fe, Mn Si,... Parts of the holder can be extruded separately to reduce the cost of manufacture. Extruded parts can be cut to the desired size and processed.
In another embodiment, at least the surface where the window is fixed in the upper part is treated by a surface treatment to ensure a better surface tension and to improve gluing and corrosion resistance. In case of an upper part made of aluminum, an anodization of the upper part improves the lifetime of the part.
In one embodiment, the upper part and/or the lower part are made of plastic and preferably a synthetic resin, by using, for example, a polybutylene terephthalate resin, a polyethylene terephthalate resin or a polyamide resin as the main component. The holder is molded e.g. by injection molding wherein a synthetic resin material is heated, melted and injected into a mold, followed by being cooled and solidified. Parts made of plastic can be reinforced by using at least one insert to improve the stiffness of the part.
In one embodiment, the upper part and the lower part are made of different material.
In another embodiment, the upper part and the lower part can be made by 3D printing or any suitable method.
The window can be a single pane or a laminated window. The window can be a glass sheet. The glass sheet can be processed and/or tempered.
The invention also relates to a method to correct the position in the space of the upper edge of a vehicle window with at least one holder according to claims l to 9 comprising following steps:
a. Assemble the lower and the upper parts of the holder together;
b. Attach the vehicle window to the upper part of the holder;
c. Misalign lower and upper parts to shift the upper edge of the window in the correct position in the space by changing the angle of the means for articulating the upper part and the lower part by a determined angle;
d. Lock the means for articulating the upper part and the lower part with the at least one locking means.
