Description

Title: Filtration system for oil filtration, especially for marine machinery such as ship ' s engines
The invention relates to a filtration system for the filtration of oil, especially lubricating oil for marine machinery units such as ship's engines, with a supply reservoir for oil, with a
backflushable main flow filter with a filter housing in a main flow branch for oil between the supply reservoir and the marine unit, with a secondary flow filter with a filter housing in a secondary flow circuit for oil and with switchable switching valves, wherein the filter housing of the main flow filter and the filter housing of the secondary flow filter have in each case an inlet and an outlet, wherein the filter housing of the main flow filter has at least one outlet for backflushing fluid, and wherein at least one switching valve is connected upstream to the inlet for the main flow filter and to the inlet for the secondary flow filter in such a way that oil can be fed selectively via the main flow branch or via the secondary flow branch to the marine machinery unit(s) connected downstream.
Filtration systems on ships serve for the protection of the marine machinery unit which is connected to the filtration system.
Filtration systems for oil are used on ships especially in the lubricating oil circuit of the ship' s engines which are used to propel the ships, such as large diesel engines in particular. There are numerous demands upon the filtration system in this case since large volumetric flows have to be filtered, wherein even extreme contaminants of the lubricating oil or hydraulic oil have to be reliably eliminated, and at the same time a more trouble-free operation of the filtration system over long periods of time is required, in fact even at extreme or extremely fluctuating
temperatures and pressures because ships in some circumstances are underway for days or weeks without being able to be maintained in a harbour. Manufacturers of ships' engines therefore define degrees of cleanliness which have to be observed with such a filtration system since otherwise no certification and approval of the
filtration system for engines of this manufacturer can be acquired.
The filtration systems previously installed on ships use a plurality of fluid flow branches, wherein in the main flow branch, to which is connected the ship's engine, use is made of a backflushable
automatic filter (backflushing filter) which in most cases is equipped with filter candles for achieving a large filter surface. By means of a backflushing device, these filter candles can be automatically backflushed individually or in groups while all the other filter candles are available for filter operation. Reference is made, only by way of example, to WO 01/89658 Al or to EP 0 656 223 Al in which the basic construction of corresponding automatic filters is depicted and explained.
A filtration system is known from the generic JP 2003/120794, in which are provided a main flow branch with a main flow filter and a secondary flow circuit with a secondary flow filter which can be controlled via switching valves in such a way that the feed of filtered lubricant to an engine or to another consumer can be carried out either via the main flow filter or via the secondary flow filter. By means of the switching valves, the secondary flow circuit can be controlled in such a way that the secondary flow filter in the secondary flow circuit can treat a backflushing fluid from the main flow filter before the backflushing fluid is fed back into the reservoir. Relatively complex and expensive switching valves are required upstream and downstream of the main flow filter and the secondary flow filter in order to selectively ensure the feed of lubricant via the main flow filter or the secondary flow filter. Trials with the generic filtration system reveal problems during the backflushing of the filter medium of the backflushing filter and unsatisfactory service lives of said backflushing filter.
It is the object of the invention to improve the generic filtration system in such a way that the maintenance-free service life of the backflushing filter satisfies the demands of the manufacturers of ships' engines and expectations of the ships' operators.
For achieving this and further objects, it is proposed by the invention that the outlet for the backflushing fluid is connected via a secondary branch, which is provided with a pump, to the inlet of the filter housing for the secondary flow filter and/or to the supply reservoir. As a result of the pump which is provided in the secondary branch, a surprisingly positive effect for the
backflushing of the filter medium of the backflushing filter is achieved since adequate backflushing is established regardless of the operating pressure in the backflushing filter and an improved differential pressure between the clean side and dirty side of the part of the filter surface involved during the backflushing operation is achieved.
The main field of application of the invention relates to
backflushing filters which have a backflushing device for
backflushing with own medium (internal medium) , that is to say with the fluid which is cleaned during filtering operation and passed through the filter surface as filtrate, because at backflushing filters backflushed with internal medium, the differential pressure determines the degree of cleaning which can be achieved during backflushing .
In the especially preferred embodiment, the pump is formed by a forced feed pump. The pump in the filtration system according to th invention can preferably have a pump output which is designed for a flow rate of between 5% and 15% of the filter throughflow rate of the backflushing filter during the backflushing operation. Pumps with a corresponding rated flow improve the cleaning capabilities o the filter surface of the backflushing filter during the
backflushing operation providing the secondary flow filter is used for the treatment of the backflushing fluid. When the secondary flow circuit is used for the treatment of the backflushing fluid, the pump which is provided according to the invention in the inlet of the secondary flow filter increases the absorption capacity of the filter medium of the secondary flow filter on the dirty side an at the same time it ensures its better throughflow during the filtering operation.
According to one embodiment, as in the case of the generic
filtration system, a separate shutoff element can be connected as a switching valve upstream to the inlet for the main flow filter and to the inlet for the secondary flow filter in each case. According to an alternative embodiment, a single changeover valve, preferably a 3/2 multiway valve, can be connected as a common switching valve upstream to the inlet for the main flow filter and to the inlet for the secondary flow filter. This minimises the instrumentation construction of the filtration system and simplifies its operation.
When the secondary flow filter is being used for the treatment of the backflushing fluid the secondary branch can open into a line section of the secondary flow circuit between the inlet for the secondary flow filter and the switching valve which is connected upstream to this. The secondary branch, however, could also be connected in another way to the inlet of the secondary flow filter and therefore open into the dirty side of the filter medium of the secondary flow filter.
A separate shutoff element can be connected as a switching valve to the outlet for the main flow filter and to the outlet for the secondary flow filter in each case, as in the case of the generic filtration system. Alternatively, a changeover valve, preferably a 3/2 multiway valve, can be connected as a common switching valve downstream to the outlet for the main flow filter and to the outlet for the secondary flow filter in each case, as a result of which th instrumentation construction of the filtration system and its operation is again simplified. A still further simplification is achieved if the common changeover valve which is connected upstream to the filters and the common switching valve which is connected downstream to these are positively intercoupled . The coupling of the switching valves can for example be carried out by means of a control shaft which by its opposite ends engages in the changeover body, such as a switching ball, of the respective changeover valve in each case. Reference is made by way of example to DE 201 05 654 Ul which shows a changeover device with permanently coupled
changeover balls.
Alternatively or additionally, a further switching valve can be arranged in a return line between the outlet of the secondary flow filter and the supply reservoir. By means of this switching valve, especially when the feed of the lubricating or hydraulic oil to the marine machinery unit is carried out exclusively via the secondary flow circuit with the secondary flow filter, the feed line to the supply reservoir can be shut off.
It is especially expedient if the filter housing for the main flow filter and the filter housing for the secondary flow filter have in each case an installation space, which is fluidically arranged between its inlet and outlet, for an exchangeable filter insert or exchangeable filter elements. In the main flow filter, all or some of the backflushable filter elements can then be replaced by new at specified maintenance intervals, and in the secondary flow filter a filter insert can also be exchanged without other disassembly operations having to be undertaken and in particular without connecting pipes having to be undone. In the case of pluralities of filter elements, these can also be combined to form a unitarily exchangeable filter insert.
Further advantages and embodiments of a filtration system according to the invention are gathered from the following description of exemplary embodiments which are schematically depicted in the drawing. In the drawing:
Fig 1 schematically shows in a greatly simplified view in a hydraulic schematic diagram a filtration system according to the invention according to a first exemplary embodiment; Fig 2 schematically shows in a greatly simplified view in a hydraulic schematic diagram a filtration system according to the invention according to a second exemplary embodiment; and chematically shows in a greatly simplified view in hydraulic schematic diagram a filtration system ccording to the invention according to a third xemplary embodiment .
Shown in Fig. 1, in a hydraulic schematic diagram having overall the designation 50, is a filtration system according to the invention for a consumer 1, such as a ship's engine, which is only
schematically shown. In the case of the consumer, it can also be another unit which requires lubricating oil or hydraulic oil. The supply and storage of the oil is carried out in this case from a schematically shown supply reservoir 2 which can also be an oil sump or the pan of an engine. The oil to be filtered is drawn in from the supply reservoir 2 by means of a main pump 3 via a line 4, for example a hose or a pipe, and via a further line 5 is presented both at a first switching element 7 and at a second switching element 8 on account of a branch 6. The first switching element 7 forms the inlet side to a main flow branch 10 for the fluid to be filtered, wherein in the main flow branch 10 a backflushable fluid filter is arranged as the main flow filter 11. The main flow filter 11 has an housing 12, only schematically shown, the inlet 13 of which is located downstream of the switching valve 7 and the outlet 14 of which opens via a line into a switching valve 17, which is arranged downstream of the outlet 14, and from there opens into an inlet for the consumer 1 which is to be supplied with oil via the line 9.
Downstream of the consumer 1 the oil is then returned to the supply reservoir 2 via a line 29 in order to then be used again in the oil circuit of the filtration system 50. Arranged between the inlet 13 and the outlet 14 of the main flow filter 11 is a filter surface 15 which can be backflushed in a suitable manner for which the main flow filter 11 is provided with a backflushing device (not shown) which opens into an outlet 16 on the housing 12 of the main flow filter 11 and enables backflushing of the filter surface against the filtering direction preferably with natural medium, that is to say the filtrate which is passed through the filter medium during the filtering operation. The filter surface 15 can be formed by a filter cartridge or individual filter candles, for example with a screen fabric or wire winding as a shell, and the flushing device can suction clean the filter candles from its ends, also from the inside or outside in the case of a filter cartridge, in counterflow to the filtering direction, as is known to the person skilled in the art which is why no detailed description of the construction of a backflushing filter with a backflushing device is carried out here.
In the filtration system 50 according to FIG 1, a secondary flow circuit 30, which can be engaged and disengaged via the switching valve 8, is provided parallel to the main flow branch 10. The switching valve 8 is connected in the secondary flow circuit 30 upstream to a secondary flow filter 31, which is preferably not backflushable , but in its filter housing 32 a filter insert or a filter cartridge with preferably a larger filter surface 36 than the filter surface 15 of the main flow filter 1 is arranged, preferably in an exchangeable manner. The filter surface 36 of the secondary flow filter 31 is exposed to flow via an inlet 33 on the filter housing 32, and via the outlet 34 on the filter housing 32 of the secondary flow filter 31 the oil which is filtered on the filter surface 36 then discharges from this as filtrate and then, depending on the switched position of two switching valves 37, 38 which are connected downstream to the secondary flow filter 31, can be fed either to the consumer 1 if the switching valve 37 leading to the line 9 is open and the switching valve 38 is closed, or be fed to the supply reservoir 2 if the switching valve 37 is closed and the switching valve 38 arranged in a feed line 25 to the supply
reservoir 2 is open. The filter surface 36 of the secondary flow filter 31 preferably has a better filter rating than the filter surface 15 of the backflushable main flow filter 11. The filter surface 36 of the secondary flow filter can for example have a filter rating in the range of between 5 μιη and 20 μιη, and the filter rating of the filter surface 15 of the main flow filter can example be between 25 μιη and 50 μιη.
In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG 1, the outlet 16 of the main flow filter 12 is connected via a secondary branch 20 to the inlet 33 of the secondary flow filter 32. According to one aspect of the invention, a pump 21 is arranged in this secondary branch 20, wherein this pump 21 is preferably a forced feed pump which
permanently feeds the fluid flow of backflushing fluid which accumulates at the outlet 16 on the backflushing filter housing 12 during the backflushing operation and as a result of this lowers the fluid pressure at the outlet 16 and therefore increases the
differential pressure of a part of the filter surface 15 of the main flow filter 11 for efficiency increase of the backflushing of this filter surface 15. An outlet 22 of the pump 21, via the exemplarily depicted line 23, opens into the supply line of the secondary flow filter 31 at a branch point 24 between its inlet 33 and the
switching valve 8 which is connected upstream to this .
In the filtration system 50, two different operating modes are basically possible. In the one operating mode, the entire main flow branch 10 is inactive and the switching valve 7 and also preferably the switching valve 17 are closed and the pump 21 in the secondary branch 20 is switched off. The switching valve 8 and the switching valve 37 are then opened, wherein at the same time the switching valve 38 is closed. This operating mode of the filtration system 50, for example in the start-up operation of a consumer, that is to say in the first operating hours of the consumer or even of the entire line system, enables filtering of the oil exclusively by means of the secondary flow filter 31 and therefore by means of its filter surface 36 which preferably not only has a better filter rating but at the same time can be exchanged much more cost- effectively and furthermore does not feed back the filtered-out particles via a backflushing device into the entire fluid system and especially to the oil pan 2. The filtering of the oil which flows to the consumer 1 at the secondary flow filter therefore ensures a continuous improvement of the oil quality in this operating mode. The second possible operating mode of the filtration system 50 forms the control operation and uses the main flow branch 10 for filtering the oil in the feed line to the consumer by means of the filter surface 15 of the main flow filter 11. The switching valves 7 and 17 in the main flow branch 10 are then correspondingly opened and the switching valves 8 and 37 in the secondary flow circuit 30 are correspondingly closed. However, in the secondary flow circuit 30 the switching valve 38 is opened therefore the backflushing fluid which discharges at the outlet 16 of the main flow filter 11 is fed via the pump 21 to the secondary flow filter 31 before it flows back via the line 25 into the supply reservoir 2. The re-treatment of the backflushing fluid by means of the secondary flow filter 31 in this operating mode therefore again ensures a continuous improvement of the oil quality.
FIG 2 shows a slightly modified filtration system 150 in comparison to the previous exemplary embodiment, wherein all system components with the same arrangement and functioning principle as in the previous exemplary embodiment are identified by the same
designations as in the exemplary embodiment according to FIG 1. As in the previous exemplary embodiment, oil is therefore extracted from the supply reservoir 2 by means of the main pump 3 and
depending on the switched position of the switching valves 7 and 8 is fed either to the main flow branch 10 with the backflushable main flow filter 11 or to the secondary flow circuit 30 with the
secondary flow filter 31. With the switching valve 7 open and consequently with the main flow filter 11 serving for the cleaning of the oil which is fed to the consumer, the switching valve 17 which is connected downstream to this is also open. Unlike in the case of the previous exemplary embodiment, however, the outlet 16 on the housing 12 of the main flow filter 11 does not open into the feed line of the secondary flow filter but provision is made here for a secondary branch 120 which opens directly into the supply reservoir 2 via a suitable line 125. A pump 121 is also arranged in the secondary branch 120 in order to increase the differential pressure on the filter surface 15 of the main flow filter 11 during the backflushing operation, as a result of which the cleaning of the filter surface 15 involved in the backflushing operation is improved and therefore the service life of the main flow filter 11 is increased. A switching valve 137 is connected downstream to the secondary flow filter 31, wherein either the pairs of switching valves 7 and 17 in the main flow branch are open or the pairs of switching valves 8 and 137 in the secondary flow circuit 30 are open, while at the same time the switching valves of the
respectively other branch or circuit are closed. In the filtration system 150 provision is made for a second secondary flow circuit 170 for the continuous improvement of the oil in the filtration system 150, which comprises a secondary pump 171 for oil extraction from the supply reservoir 2 and a cleaning device such as a separator or a centrifuge before the oil circulating in this secondary flow circuit flows back into the supply reservoir 2. Since the switching valves 7 and 8 or 17 and 137 have to be operated simultaneously in order to permanently ensure an oil inflow to the consumer 1, the switching valves could be positively coupled, for example by means of a control shaft (not shown) .
Fig 3 shows a filtration system 250 in a once more slightly modified embodiment variant. In this case also, the same designations are used for functionally identical system components, as in the case of both previous exemplary embodiments; the fluid to be cleaned is extracted from the supply reservoir 2 via the main pump 3 and flows to the consumer 1 either via a main flow branch 10 and a main flow filter 11 which is arranged in this, or via a secondary flow circuit 30 and the secondary flow filter 31 which is arranged in this. As in the case of the first exemplary embodiment, the outlet 16 on the filter housing 12 of the main flow filter 11 is connected via a secondary branch 20 to the inlet 33 of the filter housing 32 of the main flow filter 11, and arranged in the secondary branch 20 is a pump 21 via which the backflushing fluid which accumulates during the backflushing operation is correspondingly forced fed. The instrumentation construction in the filtration system 250 is simplified by the use in each case of a common changeover valve 207 in the feed line of the main flow branch 10 and of the secondary flow circuit 30 and also a common changeover valve 217 in the outlet line of the main flow branch 10 and secondary flow circuit 30. In the case of both changeover valves 207, 217 they can especially be multiway valves, especially a 3/2 multiway valve in each case, for example with a switching ball, wherein in the switching valve 207 in the one switched position of its switching ball the fluid is fed to the main flow branch 10 and in the switched position which is rotated for example by 90° in relation to this, the fluid is fed to the secondary flow circuit 30. Depending on the switched position of the switching valve 217, only the active branch then leads to the consumer 1 via the line 9. With this embodiment, it is particularly advantageously possible to positively couple the two switching valves 207, 217, as is indicated via a control shaft which is shown symbolically by the dash-dot line 280.
For the person skilled in the art, numerous modifications are apparent which shall fall within the extent of protection of the attached claims. In all the exemplary embodiments, further
secondary flow circuits could be provided. As a result of the permanent treatment of the oil, the oil can also be used as
hydraulic oil. In the individual lines, additional shutoff
elements, especially for maintenance of the individual system parts, can be arranged.
