이하에서는 도 1 내지 도 10을 참조하여 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩에 대하여 설명하도록 한다.

도 1 내지 도 6을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩(10)은 모듈(200), 방열 부재(300), 덕트(400) 및 결합 부재(500)를 포함한다. 여기서, 도면에 도시된 것처럼 상기 모듈(200)은 2개를 포함하도록 구성될 수 있으나, 이것으로 본 발명을 한정하는 것은 아니다.
상기 모듈(200)은 다수의 단위 전지(100), 상기 단위 전지의 사이에 개재되는 스페이서(210), 상기 단위 전지(100)와 스페이서(210)가 수용되는 모듈 케이스(220) 및 상기 모듈 케이스의 일측 끝단에 결합되는 엔드 플레이트(230)를 포함한다.
상기 단위 전지(100)는 전극 조립체(110), 제 1 단자(120), 제 2 단자(130), 케이스(140) 및 캡 조립체(150)를 포함한다.
상기 전극 조립체(110)는 얇은 판형 혹은 막형으로 형성된 제 1 전극판(111), 세퍼레이터(113), 제 2 전극판(112)의 적층체가 권취되거나 겹쳐서 형성된다. 여기서, 제 1 전극판(111)은 음극 역할을 할 수 있으며, 제 2 전극판(112)은 양극 역할을 할 수 있다. 물론, 그 반대도 가능하다.
상기 제 1 전극판(111)은 구리, 구리 합금, 니켈 또는 니켈 합금과 같은 금속 포일로 형성된 제 1 전극 집전체에 흑연 또는 탄소 등의 제 1 전극 활물질이 도포되어 형성된다. 상기 제 1 전극판(111)은 제 1 전극 활물질이 도포된 영역인 제 1 전극 활물질층(111a) 및 제 1 전극 활물질이 도포되지 않는 영역인 제 1 전극 무지부를 포함한다. 상기 제 1 전극 무지부는 제 1 전극판(111)과, 제 1 전극판 외부 간의 전류 흐름의 통로가 된다. 한편, 본 발명에서 제 1 전극판(111)의 재질이 한정되지 않는다.
상기 제 2 전극판(112)은 알루미늄 또는 알루미늄 합금과 같은 금속 포일로 형성된 제 2 전극 집전체에 전이금속산화물 등의 제 2 전극 활물질이 도포되어 형성된다. 상기 제 2 전극판(112)은 제 2 전극 활물질이 도포된 영역인 제 2 전극 활물질층(미도시) 및 제 2 전극 활물질이 도포되지 않는 영역인 제 2 전극 무지부를 포함한다. 상기 제 2 전극 무지부는 제 2 전극판(112)과, 제 2 전극판 외부 간의 전류 흐름의 통로가 된다. 한편, 본 발명에서 상기 제 2 전극판(112)의 재질이 한정되지 않는다.
상기와 같은 제 1 전극판(111) 및 제 2 전극판(112)은 극성을 달리하여 배치될 수 있다.
세퍼레이터(113)는 제 1 전극판(111)과 제 2 전극판(112) 사이에 위치되어 쇼트를 방지하고 리튬 이온의 이동을 가능하게 하는 역할을 하며, 폴리에틸렌이나, 폴리 프로필렌이나, 폴리 에틸렌과 폴리 프로필렌의 복합 필름으로 이루어질 수 있다. 한편, 본 발명에서 상기 세퍼레이터(113)의 재질이 한정되지 않는다.
이러한 전극 조립체(110)는 실질적으로 전해액과 함께 상기 케이스(140)에 수납된다. 상기 전해액은 유기 용매에 리튬염이 용해된 혼합물로 이루어질 수 있다. 또한, 상기 전해액은 액체, 고체 또는 겔상일 수 있다.
한편, 상기 제 1 전극판(111)과 제 2 전극판(112)의 적어도 일 개소에는 제 1 전극탭(111b) 및 제 2 전극탭(112b)이 접속될 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)은 상기 전극 조립체(110)와 제 1 단자(120) 사이에 개재되고, 상기 제 2 전극탭(112b)은 상기 전극 조립체(110)와 제 2 단자(130) 사이에 개재된다. 본 명세서를 통하여 제 1 전극탭(111b) 및 제 2 전극탭(112b)은 전극탭(111b, 112b)으로 총괄적으로 호칭될 수도 있다.
상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)은 상기 전극 조립체(110)의 제 1 전극판(111) 중 제 1 활물질이 도포되지 않은 제 1 무지부 자체가 돌출된 구조로서 구성될 수 있다. 이 경우, 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)은 별도의 부재가 없이도, 권취 또는 적층된 전극 조립체(110)에서 제 1 무지부가 겹쳐져서 형성될 수 있다. 다만, 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)은 제 1 무지부에 접속된 별도 부재를 통해 형성되는 것도 가능하다. 또한, 상기 제 2 전극 탭(112b)도 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)과 마찬가지로 상기 전극 조립체(110)의 제 2 전극판(112) 중 제 2 활물질이 도포되지 않은 제 2 무지부 자체가 돌출된 구조로서 형성되거나, 또는 상기 제 2 무지부에 접속된 별도의 부재를 통해 형성될 수 있다.
상기 제 1 전극 탭(111b)은 상기 전극 조립체(110)의 상단으로부터 후술될 상기 제 1 단자(120)의 하단을 향하여 연장되며, 상기 제 2 전극 탭(112b)은 상기 전극 조립체(110)의 상단으로부터 후술될 상기 제 2 단자(130)의 하단을 향하여 연장된다. 각각의 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b) 및 제 2 전극탭(112b)은 상기 제 1 단자(120) 및 제 2 단자(130)에 직접 전기적으로 접속 또는 용접된다.
고용량 고출력 배터리의 경우에는 전극 조립체(110) 자체로부터 다수의 전극탭(111b, 112b)이 연장되므로 높은 출력 전류를 얻을 수 있다. 또한, 상기 전극 조립체(110)가 갖는 전극 탭(111b, 112b, 무지부 자체 또는 별도 부재)이 직접 단자에 전기적으로 접속되어 전기적 경로가 짧아짐으로써, 전극 조립체와 단자 사이의 전기적 접속 공정이 간단할 뿐만 아니라 이차 전지의 내부 저항 및 부품 개수가 감소한다. 더불어, 상기 전극 조립체(110)가 갖는 권취 축과 상기 제 1, 2 단자(120, 130)가 갖는 단자 축이 상호간 대략 평행 또는 수평하게 형성됨으로써, 전해액 주입 시 전극 조립체의 전해액 함침성이 우수할 뿐만 아니라, 과충전 시 내부 가스가 안전벤트로 신속하게 이동하여 안전벤트가 빠르게 동작한다.
상기 제 1 단자(120)는 상기 제 1 전극판(111)과 전기적으로 연결되며, 제 1 단자 기둥(121) 및 제 1 단자 플레이트(122)를 포함한다.
상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)은 후술되는 캡 플레이트(151)를 관통하여 상부로 일정 길이 돌출 및 연장된다. 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 하부에서 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)과 전기적으로 연결된다. 또한, 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 하부에서 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)이 캡 플레이트(151)로부터 빠지지 않도록 형성된 플랜지(121a)를 포함한다. 특히, 상기 플랜지(121a)에는 상기 제 1 전극탭(111b)이 전기적으로 접속 또는 용접된다. 한편, 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151)와 전기적으로 절연된다.
상기 제 1 단자 플레이트(122)는 그 중앙에 홀(미도시)을 포함한다. 그리고 상기 홀에는 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)이 결합되고 용접된다. 즉, 상부로 노출된 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)과 상기 제 1 단자 플레이트(122)의 경계 영역은 상호간 용접된다. 예를 들면, 레이저 빔이 상부로 노출된 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121)과 제 1 단자 플레이트(122)의 경계 영역에 제공됨으로써, 상기 경계 영역이 상호간 용융 및 냉각되어 용접된다.
상기 제 2 단자(130)는 상기 제 2 전극판(112)과 전기적으로 연결되며, 제 2 단자 기둥(131) 및 제 2 단자 플레이트(132)를 포함한다.
상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)은 후술되는 캡 플레이트(151)를 관통하여 상부로 일정 길이 돌출 및 연장된다. 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 하부에서 상기 제 2 전극탭(112b)와 전기적으로 연결된다. 또한, 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151) 하부에서 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)이 캡 플레이트(151)로부터 빠지지 않도록 형성된 플랜지(131a)를 포함한다. 특히, 상기 플랜지(131a)에는 상기 제 2 전극탭(112b)이 전기적으로 접속 또는 용접된다. 한편, 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151)와 전기적으로 절연된다. 또는, 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)은 상기 캡 플레이트(151)와 전기적으로 연결될 수도 있다.
상기 제 2 단자 플레이트(132)는 홀(미도시)을 포함한다. 그리고 상기 홀에는 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)이 결합되고 용접된다. 즉, 상부로 노출된 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)과 제 2 단자 플레이트(132)의 경계 영역은 상호간 용접된다. 예를 들면, 레이저 빔이 상부로 노출된 상기 제 2 단자 기둥(131)과 제 2 단자플레이트(132)의 경계 영역에 제공됨으로써, 상기 경계 영역이 상호간 용융 및 냉각되어 용접된다.
상기 케이스(140)는 알루미늄, 알루미늄 합금 또는 니켈이 도금된 스틸과 같은 도전성 금속으로 형성되며, 상기 전극 조립체(110), 제 1 단자(120) 및 제 2 단자(130)가 삽입 안착될 수 있는 개구부가 형성된 대략 육면체 형상으로 이루어진다. 즉, 상기 케이스(140)는 상호 일정 거리 이격되어 서로 마주보는 두 쌍의 측면부와 상기 두 쌍의 측면부의 하부에 이들과 수직으로 형성된 바닥부를 포함한다. 상기 케이스(140)의 내면은 절연 처리되어 상기 전극 조립체(110), 제 1 단자(120), 제 2 단자(130) 및 캡 조립체(150)와 절연될 수 있다.
상기 캡 조립체(150)는 상기 케이스(140)에 결합된다. 즉, 상기 캡 조립체(150)는 상기 케이스(140)의 개구부를 밀폐시킨다. 상기 캡 조립체(150)는 구체적으로 캡 플레이트(151), 가스켓(152c), 마개(153), 안전벤트(154), 상부 절연부재(152a) 및 하부 절연부재(152b)를 포함한다.
상기 캡 플레이트(151)는 상기 케이스(140)의 개구를 밀봉하며, 상기 케이스(140)와 동일한 재질로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 상기 캡 플레이트(151)는 레이저 용접 방식으로 상기 케이스(140)에 결합될 수 있다. 여기서, 상기 캡 플레이트(151)는 상술한 바와 같이 상기 제 2 단자(130)와 동일한 극성을 가질 수 있으므로, 상기 캡 플레이트(151) 및 케이스(140)는 동일한 극성을 가질 수 있다.
상기 마개(153)는 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 전해액 주입구(151a)를 밀봉한다. 또한, 상기 안전벤트(154)는 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 벤트 홀(151b)에 대응되도록 형성된다. 상기 안전벤트(154)는 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 타영역에 비해 얇은 두께를 갖도록 형성되고, 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 벤트 홀(151b)을 커버함으로서 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 안전벤트(154)는 설정된 압력에서 상기 캡 플레이트(151)의 타영역에 비해 먼저 개방되어 전지의 폭발을 방지할 수 있다. 이 때, 상기 안전벤트(154)는 상기 설정된 압력에서 용이하게 개방될 수 있도록 그 일면에 노치(154a)가 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 캡 플레이트(151)에 별도의 벤트 홀(151b)이 구비되지 않더라도, 상기 캡 플레이트(151)를 가공하여 타영역에 비해 얇은 두께를 갖도록 하여 상기 안전벤트(154)를 일체로 형성하는 것도 가능하다.
상기 가스켓(152c)은 절연성 재질로 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121) 및 제 2 단자 기둥(131) 각각과 캡 플레이트(151) 사이에 형성되어, 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121) 및 제 2 단자 기둥(131) 각각과 캡 플레이트(151) 사이를 밀봉시킨다. 상기 가스켓(152c)은 외부의 수분이 상기 단위 전지(100)의 내부에 침투하지 못하도록 하거나, 상기 단위 전지(100)의 내부에 수용된 전해액이 외부로 유출되지 못하도록 한다.
상기 상부 절연부재(152a)는 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121) 및 제 2 단자 기둥(131) 각각과 캡 플레이트(151)의 사이에 형성된다. 또한, 상기 상부 절연부재(152a)는 상기 캡 플레이트(151)와 밀착된다. 더욱이, 상기 상부 절연부재(152a)는 상기 가스켓(152c)에도 밀착될 수 있다. 이러한 상부 절연부재(152a)는 상기 제 1 단자 기둥(121) 및 제 2 단자 기둥(131)과 캡 플레이트(151)를 절연시킨다.
상기 하부 절연부재(152b)는 상기 제 1 전극 탭(111b) 및 제 2 전극 탭(112b) 각각과 캡 플레이트(151) 사이에 형성되어, 불필요한 단락의 발생을 방지한다. 즉, 상기 하부 절연부재(152b)는 상기 제 1 전극 탭(111b)과 캡 플레이트(151) 사이의 단락, 그리고 상기 제 2 전극 탭(112b)과 캡 플레이트(151) 사이의 단락을 방지한다.
한편, 상기 캡 플레이트(151)가 상기 제 2 단자(130)와 동일한 극성을 가질 경우, 구조에 따라 상기 제 2 단자(130)와 캡 플레이트(151) 사이의 가스켓(152c), 상부 절연부재(152a) 및 하부 절연부재(152b)는 생략될 수 있다.
상기 단위 전지(100)는 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이 다수개가 일렬로 배열된다. 이 때, 단위 전지(100)의 제 1 단자(120) 또는 제 2 단자(130)는 인접한 단위 전지(100)의 제 1 단자 또는 제 2 단자(120, 130)와 접속되어 서로 직렬 또는 병렬 연결될 수 있다. 또한, 도시되지는 않았지만 이러한 제 1, 2 단자(120, 130)의 접속은 버스바에 의하여 이루어질 수 있다.
상기 다수의 단위 전지(100)의 사이에는 스페이서(210)가 개재된다. 상기 스페이서(210)는 인접한 단위 전지(100)들을 서로 전기적으로 절연시킨다. 즉, 상기 단위 전지(100)의 케이스(140)는 극성을 갖도록 형성될 수 있는데, 절연성 소재의 스페이서(210)를 사용함으로써 인접한 단위 전지(100)들 간의 전기적인 간섭을 차단할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 스페이서(210)는 최외곽에 위치한 단위 전지(100)의 외면에도 배치될 수 있다. 즉, 상기 스페이서(210)는 후술할 엔드 플레이트(230)와 단위 전지(100)의 사이에도 배치될 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 단위 전지(100)와 엔드 플레이트(230)는 상기 스페이서(210)에 의해 전기적 절연 상태를 이루게 된다.
더불어, 상기 스페이서(210)는 상기 단위 전지(100)의 스웰링(swelling)을 억제하는 역할을 한다. 즉, 상기 단위 전지(100)의 케이스(140)는 변형이 가능한 금속 소재로 형성되어 사용 도중 열적 팽창이 발생할 수 있다. 이 때, 상기 스페이서(210)를 고분자와 같이 변형이 적은 소재를 이용하여 형성함으로써, 단위 전지(100)의 스웰링을 억제할 수 있다.
상기 스페이서(210)는 단위 전지(100)들 사이의 경계 영역을 따라 형성된 다수의 방열 홀(210a)을 포함한다. 즉, 상기 방열 홀(210a)은 상기 스페이서(210)가 상기 단위 전지(100)들의 사이에서 접촉되는 면에 대해 외곽 둘레를 따라 형성된 4개의 측면에 다수개로 구비될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 방열 홀(210a)은 상기 스페이서(210)의 각각의 측면 에 대해다수개로 형성될 수 있다. 즉, 상기 방열 홀(210a)은 상기 스페이서(210)의 각 측면에서 서로 이격되도록 다수 개로 구비된다.
상기 단위 전지(100)에서 발생된 열은 상기 방열 홀(210a)을 통해 모듈(200)의 외부로 방출된다. 또한, 상기 방열 홀(210a)은 후술할 방열 부재(300)가 삽입되는 통로의 역할을 할 수도 있다. 이에 대해서는 후에 보다 구체적으로 설명하도록 한다.
상기 모듈 케이스(220)는 상기 다수의 단위 전지(100) 및 스페이서(210)를 수용한다. 상기 모듈 케이스(220)는 서로 마주보는 한 쌍의 측면 플레이트(221)를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 측면 플레이트(221)는 판 상으로 현성되어 상기 다수의 단위 전지(100)의 측면을 덮도록 형성된다. 구체적으로, 상기 측면 플레이트(221)는 상기 단위 전지(100)의 케이스(140) 중 상대적으로 면적이 작은 단측면을 덮도록 위치한다. 그리고 상기 측면 플레이트(221)의 양단에는 후술한 엔드 플레이트(230)가 결합되어 양측 최외곽에 위치한 단위 전지(100) 또는 스페이서(210)의 외면을 덮을 수 있다. 즉, 모듈 케이스(220)는 상기 측면 플레이트(221)를 통해 상기 다수의 단위 전지(100)의 배열의 측면을 덮도록 형성된다. 이 때, 상기 엔드 플레이트(230) 중 적어도 하나는 상기 측면 플레이트(221)에 대해 일체로 형성되는 것도 가능하다.
한편, 상기 측면 플레이트(221)에는 다수의 방열 홀(221a)이 형성될 수 있다. 상기 방열 홀(221a)은 상기 스페이서(210)와 대응되는 위치에 형성될 수 있다. 이 때, 상기 측면 플레이트(221)의 하나의 방열 홀(221a)은 하나의 스페이서(210)의 측면에 위치한 다수의 방열 홀(210a)과 대응된다. 따라서, 상기 다수의 단위 전지(100)로부터 배출된 열은 상기 스페이서(210)의 방열 홀(210a) 및 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(221a)을 통해 외부로 방출될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 방열 홀(221a)은 후술할 방열 부재(300)가 삽입되는 통로의 역할을 할 수도 있다.
상기 모듈 케이스(220)의 개방된 단부에는 판상의 엔드 플레이트(230)가 결합된다. 상기 엔드 플레이트(230)는 한 쌍으로 구비되어, 각 단부에서최외곽에 위치한 단위 전지(100) 또는 스페이서(210)의 외면을 덮는다. 상기 엔드 플레이트(230)는 볼트 결합 또는 후크 결합 등과 같은 기계적인 결합 방식에 의하여 상기 모듈 케이스(220)와 결합될 수 있다.
이처럼, 다수의 단위 전지(100) 및 스페이서(210)는 상기 모듈 케이스(220)의 개방된 단부를 통해 모듈 케이스(220)의 내부에 안착된다. 이후, 개방된 양단부에는 엔드 플레이트(230)가 조립된다. 그리고 상기 다수의 단위 전지(100)의 상부에 커버(240)를 결합함으로써 모듈(200)을 형성할 수 있다.
상기 방열 부재(300)는 상기 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(221a) 및 상기 스페이서(210)의 방열 홀(210a)을 통해 상기 스페이서(210)와 단위 전지(100)의 사이에 삽입된다. 또한, 상기 방열 부재(300)의 일 단부는 상기 모듈(200)의 측면으로 연장되어 모듈(200) 외부로 노출된다. 이러한 방열 부재(300)에 대해서는 후에 보다 구체적으로 설명하도록 한다.
상기 덕트(400)는 상기 모듈(200) 중 측면 플레이트(221)와 인접하도록 형성된다. 본 발명에서는 상기 덕트(400)가 상기 2개의 모듈(200)의 사이에 배치되도록 형성된다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 덕트(400)는 양측면이 상기 모듈(200)의 측면 플레이트(221)와 마주보도록 배치된다. 상기 덕트(400)는 일단부에 개방된 개구(410)를 포함하며, 개구와 마주보는 타단부은 밀폐되어 있다. 또한, 상기 덕트(400)는 내부에 통로(420)가 형성되어 공기를 유입시키거나 유출시키는 것이 가능하다.
상기 덕트(400)의 양측면, 즉, 상기 모듈(200)과 마주보는 면에는 다수의 방열 홀(430)이 형성된다. 여기서, 상기 방열 홀(430)은 상기 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(221a)과 대응되는 위치에 형성된다. 따라서, 상기 모듈(200)로부터 발생된 열은 스페이서(210)의 방열 홀(210a), 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(221a), 덕트(400)의 방열 홀(430) 및 통로(420)를 통과하여 개구(410)를 통해 방출될 수 있다. 또는, 상기 개구(410)를 통해 유입된 공기가 통로(420) 및 방열 홀(430, 221a, 210a)을 통과하여 상기 모듈(200) 내로 유입됨으로써 단위 전지(100)의 냉각이 이루어질 수도 있다.
상기 결합 부재(500)는 상기 모듈(200)의 엔드 플레이트(230)와 대응되는 영역에 결합된다. 보다 바람직하게는, 상기 결합 부재(500)는 상기 덕트(400)의 개구(410)와 대응되는 위치에 결합될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 결합 부재(500) 중 상기 개구(410)와 대응되는 영역에는 냉각 팬(510)이 형성된다. 따라서, 상기 냉각 팬(510)의 동작에 의하여 상기 덕트(400)로 공기가 유입되거나 방출될 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 냉각 팬(510)은 블로우(blow) 타입 또는 석션(suction) 타입이 적용될 수 있다.
블로우 타입의 경우, 상기 냉각 팬(510)의 동작에 의하여 상기 덕트(400)의 통로(420)로 외부 공기가 유입된다. 그리고 상기 덕트(400)의 방열 홀(430)을 통해 모듈(200) 내로 공기가 유입되어 단위 전지(100)의 냉각이 이루어진다. 또한, 열을 흡수한 공기는 덕트(400)와 반대편에 위치한 모듈(200)의 방열 홀(221a)을 통해 외부로 방출되어 모듈(200)의 방열 동작이 이루어질 수 있다.
반대로, 석션 타입의 경우, 상기 냉각 팬(510)의 동작에 의하여 상기 모듈(200) 내의 뜨거운 공기가 덕트(400)의 통로(420)로 흡입된다. 여기서, 뜨거운 공기라 함은 덕트(400)와 반대편에 위치한 방열 홀(221a)을 통해 모듈(200)로 유입된 외부 공기가 모듈(200) 내의 열을 흡수함으로써 형성된 것일 수 있다. 즉, 상기 덕트(400)가 방열 홀(430)을 통해 상기 모듈(200) 내의 공기를 흡입함으로써 단위 전지(100)의 냉각이 이루어진다. 그리고 이러한 공기는 덕트(400)의 개구(410)를 통해 외부로 방출되어 모듈(200)의 방열 동작이 이루어질 수 있다.
한편, 구체적으로 도시되지는 않았지만, 상기 결합 부재(500)에는 상기 전지 팩(10)을 외부 기기와 연결하기 위한 외부 단자 또는 전지 팩(10)의 충방전을 제어하는 보호회로모듈 등이 형성될 수도 있다.
도 7은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩 중 방열 부재의 분해 사시도이다. 도 8은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩 중 단위 전지, 스페이서 및 방열 부재의 결합을 설명하기 위한 사시도이다. 도 9는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩 중 모듈과 방열 부재의 결합을 설명하기 위한 정면도이다. 도 10은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩 중 모듈과 방열 부재의 결합 영역을 도시한 측면도이다.
도 7 내지 도 10을 참조하여 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 방열 부재 및 그 결합 구조에 대하여 보다 구체적으로 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
먼저, 상기 방열 부재(300)는 방열판(310) 및 방열 패드(320)를 포함하여 구성될 수 있다.
상기 방열판(310)은 상기 모듈(200) 내부로부터 외부까지 연장되어 상기 단위 전지(100)로부터 발생된 열을 흡수 및 전달하여 외부로 방출시키는 역할을 한다. 상기 방열판(310)은 알루미늄 또는 구리 등과 같은 열전도율이 좋은 재질로 구성되는 것이 바람직하다. 상기 방열판(310)은 모듈(200) 내부로 삽입되는 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)로부터 모듈(200) 외측으로 연장되는 연장 플레이트(312)를 포함한다. 즉, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)를 통해 모듈(200) 내의 열이 흡수되고, 이러한 열은 외측에 위치한 연장 플레이트(312)로 전달 및 방출됨으로써 모듈(200)의 냉각이 이루어질 수 있다.
상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 상기 모듈(200) 내부로 삽입되어 단위 전지(100) 및 스페이서(210)의 사이에 개재된다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(221a) 및 스페이서(210)의 방열 홀(210a)을 통해 삽입된다. 여기서, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 상기 덕트(400)의 반대편에 위치하는 측면 플레이트(221)를 통해 삽입된다.
상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 단위 전지(100)의 두 쌍의 측면부 중 상대적으로 면적이 넓은 장측면부를 따라 연장되도록 형성된다. 또한, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 서로 이격되도록 한 쌍이 구비될 수 있다. 즉, 2개의 삽입 플레이트(311)가 구비되어 상기 장측면부의 상측 및 하측에 하나씩 배치될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 상기 단위 전지(100)에서 발생된 열이 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)를 통해 골고루 흡수 및 전달되어 외부로 방출될 수 있다. 물론, 이러한 구조로 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)를 한정하는 것은 아니며, 경우에 따라 다양한 형태가 적용될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 상기 스페이서(210)의 측면에 위치한 삽입 홀(210a)들 중 하나에 삽입된다. 본 실시예에서는 한 쌍의 삽입 플레이트(311)가 서로 이격된 삽입 홀(210a)에 각각 하나씩 삽입되도록 형성되었다. 따라서, 상기 방열 부재(300)는 별도의 고정 부재 없이 상기 모듈(200)에 안착 및 결합될 수 있다.
상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 전기적으로 중성을 유지하기 위하여 상기 단위 전지(100)와 이격되어 위치한다. 즉, 상기 방열판(310)이 알루미늄, 구리 등과 같은 금속 재질로 형성되므로, 극성을 갖는 단위 전지(100)의 케이스(140)와 접촉하지 않도록 위치하는 것이 바람직하다. 구체적으로, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 후술할 방열 패드(320)를 그 사이에 개재시킨 채로 단위 전지(100)와 접촉하게 된다. 따라서, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 상기 방열 홀(210a)을 통해 삽입되어 실질적으로는 스페이서(210)와 직접 접촉하게 된다.
상기 연장 플레이트(312)는 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)로부터 모듈(200)의 외측으로 연장된다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 연장 플레이트(312)는 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)로부터 대략 수직으로 절곡되어 모듈(200)의 측부를 따라 연장된다. 즉, 상기 연장 플레이트(312)는 상기 측면 플레이트(221)를 따라 형성된다. 이 때, 하나의 연장 플레이트(312)는 인접한 방열판(310)의 연장 플레이트(312)와 간섭되지 않도록 그 너비가 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(221a)들 사이의 너비보다 크지 않도록 형성된다.
상기 연장 플레이트(312)가 상기 모듈(200) 내의 삽입 플레이트(311)로부터 연장되어 모듈(200) 외부에 위치함으로써, 삽입 플레이트(311)가 흡수한 열을 모듈(200) 외부로 용이하게 전달할 수 있다. 그리고 연장 플레이트(312)는 모듈(200)의 외부에서 외부 공기에 의해 자연 냉각됨으로 모듈(200)의 방열 동작이 이루어질 수 있다.
상기 방열 패드(320)는 상기 방열판(310) 중 삽입 플레이트(311)와 동일한 형태로 형성된다. 또한, 상기 방열 패드(320)는 상기 연장 플레이트(312)에 부착되고, 상기 단위 전지(100)와 직접 접촉한다. 즉, 상기 방열 패드(320)는 상기 단위 전지(100) 및 삽입 플레이트(311)의 사이에 개재되어 둘 사이를 절연시킨다. 또한, 상기 방열 패드(320)는 상기 방열판(310)과 단위 전지(100)의 밀착력을 높이는 역할을 할 수 있다. 더불어, 상기 방열 패드(320)는 상기 단위 전지(100)의 열을 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)로 용이하게 전달시키는 역할을 한다. 따라서, 상기 모듈(200) 내에서 발생된 열은 방열 패드(320)를 통해 상기 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 연장 플레이트(312)로 전달되어 외부로 방출된다. 상기 방열 패드(320)는 실리콘 또는 아크릴과 같은 재질로 형성될 수 있으나, 이것으로 본 발명을 한정하지는 않는다.
한편, 도 8에서는 상기 단위 전지(100), 스페이서(210) 및 방열판(310)의 배치 구조를 나타내기 위하여 방열판(310)이 스페이서(210)의 외곽에 위치하도록 도시되었으나, 실질적으로 방열판(310)은 스페이서(210)의 방열 홀(221a)에 삽입되어 위치한다.
더불어, 상기 방열 부재(300)가 상기 방열 홀(221a, 210a)을 통해 모듈(200)의 내부에 삽입되더라도, 도 10에 도시된 바와 같이, 방열 홀(221a, 210a)이 형성하는 외부와의 공기 유로도 함께 존재하게 된다. 따라서, 방열 부재(300)에 의한 전도를 통한 방열뿐만 아니라 방열 홀(221a, 210a)에 의한 대류에 의한 방열도 동시에 이루어질 수 있다.
한편, 상기 방열 부재(300)는 다수개로 구비되어 상기 단위 전지(100)의 사이 마다 삽입될 수 있고, 여기서 상기 방열 부재(300) 각각에 형성된 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 방열 패드(320)는 모든 방열 부재(300)에서 동일한 위치에 있지 않을 수 있다. 즉, 배열된 다수개의 방열 부재(300)에서 상기 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 방열 패드(320)의 위치가 서로 다르게 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 단위 전지(100)의 중앙에 위치한 방열 부재(300)의 경우 상기 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 방열 패드(320)가 상대적으로 많은 개수로 구비되어 상하 방면에서 균일하게 배치되고, 상기 단위 전지(100)의 단부에 위치한 방열 부재(300)의 경우 상기 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 방열 패드(320)가 상대적으로 적은 개수로 구비되어 상하 방면에서 대략 중앙에 밀집하도록 배치되는 형태가 될 수 있다. 이러한 구성을 통하면, 상기 덕트(400)를 통해 이동되는 공기의 유속과 압력을 제어할 수 있기 때문에 보다 효율적인 방열이 가능할 수 있다.
도 1 내지 도 10을 참조하여 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩의 방열 동작을 설명하면 다음과 같다.
본 발명에 따른 전지 팩(10)은 2개의 모듈(200) 사이에 덕트(400)가 개재된다. 그리고 상기 모듈(200) 중 덕트(400)와 반대편에 위치한 측면 플레이트(221)에는 방열 부재(300)가 삽입된다. 즉, 상기 모듈(200) 중 덕트(400)의 반대편에 위치한 스페이서(210)와 측면 플레이트(221)의 방열 홀(210a, 221a)에 방열 부재(300)가 삽입 설치된다. 이 때, 상기 방열 부재(300)는 상기 단위 전지(100) 및 스페이서(210)의 사이에 위치할 수 있다.
한편, 상기 방열 부재(300)는 모듈(200) 내부에 위치하는 삽입 플레이트(311)와 모듈(200) 외부에 위치하는 연장 플레이트(312)를 포함하는 방열판(310) 및 삽입 플레이트(311)에 부착되는 방열 패드(320)를 포함한다. 또한, 실질적으로, 상기 삽입 플레이트(311)는 스페이서(210)와 접촉되고, 상기 방열 패드(320)는 단위 전지(100)와 접촉된다. 따라서, 상기 단위 전지(100)에서 발생한 열은 방열 패드(320), 삽입 플레이트(311) 및 연장 플레이트(312)를 따라 전도 방식으로 모듈(200) 외부로 전달된다. 그리고 상기 연장 플레이트(312)는 상기 모듈(200)의 외부에서 외부 공기에 의한 냉각을 통해 모듈(200)의 방열 동작이 이루어질 수 있다.
더불어, 상기 덕트(400)의 개구(410)에는 냉각 팬(510)이 설치된다. 상기 냉각 팬(510)은 블로우 타입 또는 석션 타입일 수 있다. 블로우 타입일 경우, 덕트(400) 내부로 유입된 공기가 모듈(200)을 통과하며 열을 흡수하고 외부로 방출됨으로써 냉각이 이루어질 수 있다. 석션 타입일 경우, 모듈(200) 내부에 존재하는 열이 흡수된 뜨거운 공기가 덕트(400)로 흡입되어 개구(410)를 통해 외부로 방출됨으로써 냉각이 이루어질 수 있다.
한편, 본 발명에 따른 전지 팩(10)에서는, 방열 부재(300)가 덕트(400) 반대편의 모듈(200) 외측에 위치하므로, 상기 냉각 팬(510)이 블로우 타입일 경우 방열 효과가 보다 극대화될 수 있다. 즉, 방열 부재(300)의 열 전달 경로와 블로우 타입의 공기 배출 경로가 모두 덕트(400)의 반대편에 위치한 측면 플레이트(221)를 향함으로써, 모듈(200) 내의 열 방출이 보다 용이하게 이루어질 수 있다.
이와 같이 하여, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전지 팩(10)은 모듈(200)의 내부로부터 외부로 연장된 방열 부재(300)를 포함함으로써, 모듈(200) 내의 열이 외부로 용이하게 방출될 수 있다. 또한, 덕트(400) 및 냉각 팬(510)을 더 포함하도록 구성함으로써, 모듈(200)의 냉각 효과를 극대화시킬 수 있다. 즉, 본 발명에 따른 전지 팩(10)은 방열 부재(300)에 의한 전도 방식의 방열과 덕트(400) 및 냉각 팬(510)에 의한 대류 방식의 방열이 동시에 이루어짐으로써 전지 팩(10)의 방열 성능을 극대화시킬 수 있다.
이하에서는 도 11 및 도 12을 참조하여 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 전지 팩에 대하여 설명하도록 한다.
도 11은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 전지 팩의 사시도이다. 도 12는 도 11에서 하나의 모듈을 생략하여 도시한 사시도이다. 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 전지 팩은 방열 부재(600)의 설치 위치 및 덕트(700)의 구조를 제외하고는 앞선 실시예와 동일하므로 이들 구성을 위주로 설명하도록 한다.
도 11 및 도 12를 참조하면, 전지 팩(20)은 2개의 모듈(200) 및 그 사이의 덕트(700)를 포함한다. 또한, 상기 모듈(200)에는 상기 덕트(700)와 마주보도록 다수의 방열 부재(600)가 설치된다.
상기 방열 부재(600)는 상기 모듈(200) 중 덕트(700)와 인접한 측면 플레이트(221, 도 4 참조)에 설치된다. 즉, 앞선 실시예에서는 방열 부재(300)가 덕트(700) 반대편의 측면 플레이트에 설치되었으나, 본 실시예에서는 방열 부재(600)가 덕트(700)와 마주보도록 설치된다. 상기 방열 부재(600)는 상기 모듈(200)의 내부로부터 외측면까지 연장되도록 형성된다. 따라서, 상기 방열 부재(600)는 모듈(200) 내부의 열을 모듈(200) 외부로 전달시킬 수 있다. 상기 방열 부재(600)의 구조 및 결합 형태는 앞선 실시예와 동일하므로 중복 설명은 생략하도록 한다.
상기 덕트(700)는 2개의 모듈(200)의 사이에 배치된다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 덕트(700)는 양측부가 상기 모듈(200)의 측면 플레이트(221)와 마주보도록 배치된다. 상기 덕트(700)는 일단부에 개방된 개구(710)를 포함하며, 개구와 마주보는 타단부은 밀폐되어 있다. 또한, 상기 덕트(700)는 내부에 통로(720)가 형성되어 공기를 유입시키거나 유출시키는 것이 가능하다.
상기 덕트(700)의 양측부, 즉, 상기 모듈(200)과 마주보는 양측부에는 각각 방열 홀(730)이 형성된다. 특히, 상기 방열 홀(730)은 다수의 상기 방열 부재(600)들과 전체적으로 대응되도록 형성된다. 즉, 상기 방열 부재(600)들 중 연장 플레이트(도 7의 312 참조)는 모두 상기 방열 홀(730)과 대응되도록 위치하게 된다. 따라서, 상기 덕트(700)의 내부로 유입되거나 유출되는 공기에 의하여 상기 모듈(200) 외부로 노출된 방열 부재(600)가 용이하게 냉각될 수 있다.
한편, 앞선 실시예와 마찬가지로 전지 팩(20)의 정면에는 결합 부재가 설치될 수 있다. 또한, 결합 부재에는 앞선 실시예와 마찬가지로 덕트(700)의 개구(710)와 대응되도록 냉각 팬이 설치될 수 있다. 이 때, 냉각 팬은 블로우 타입 또는 석션 타입으로 구성될 수 있다.
이와 같이 하여, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 전지 팩(20)은 모듈(200)의 내부로부터 외부로 연장된 방열 부재(600)를 포함함으로써, 모듈(200) 내의 열이 외부로 용이하게 방출될 수 있다. 또한, 덕트(700) 및 냉각 팬을 더 포함하도록 구성함으로써, 모듈(200)의 냉각 효과를 극대화시킬 수 있다. 특히, 상기 방열 부재(600)가 상기 덕트(700)의 방열 홀(730)과 대응되도록 위치한다. 따라서, 덕트(700)의 내부로 유입되거나 유출되는 공기에 의하여 방열 부재(600)의 냉각이 보다 효과적으로 이루어질 수 있다. 특히, 덕트(700)가 석션 타입일 경우 모듈(200)을 냉각시키고 덕트로 흡입된 공기를 통해 덕트 내부에 위치한 방열 부재까지 함께 냉각될 수 있으므로 보다 효과적인 방열 동작이 이루어질 수 있다.
이하에서는 전지 팩에 덕트와 냉각 팬 및 방열 부재를 적용함에 따른 방열 성능을 측정한 결과에 대하여 설명하도록 한다.
아래의 표 1은 전지 팩 1 내지 4에 적용된 냉각 팬과 방열 부재의 조건을 나타낸 것이다.

전지 팩 1, 2, 4의 경우 석션 타입의 냉각 팬이 적용되었고, 전지 팩 3의 경우 블로우 타입의 냉각 팬이 적용되었다. 또한, 전지 팩 1의 경우 방열 부재는 설치되지 않았으며, 전지 팩 2, 3에는 모듈 중 덕트의 반대편에 방열 부재가 설치되었고, 전지 팩 4에는 덕트의 방열 홀과 대응되도록 방열 부재가 설치되었다.
도 13은 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 전지 팩의 온도 분포를 도시한 도면이다. 도 13의 왼쪽은 전지 팩 1의 온도 분포가 도시된 것이며, 오른쪽은 전지 팩 2의 온도 분포가 도시된 것이다.
도 13을 참조하면, 전지 팩 2의 온도가 전지 팩 1의 온도보다 전체적으로 낮은 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 전지 팩 2의 경우 모듈을 구성하는 단위 전지들의 전체적인 온도 분포가 전지 팩 1에 비하여 보다 균일하게 이루어진 것을 확인할 수 있다.
즉, 본 발명에 따른 전지 팩은 방열 부재뿐만 아니라 덕트와 냉각 팬을 함께 적용함에 따라 보다 효과적으로 방열 기능을 향상시킬 수 있다. 또한, 전지 팩을 구성하는 단위 전지들간의 온도 편차를 감소시킴으로써 전지 팩의 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
아래의 표 2는 전지 팩 2 내지 전지 팩 4의 평균 온도를 측정하여 냉각 팬의 타입 및 방열 부재의 위치에 따른 방열 성능을 비교한 결과이다.

표 2에 나타낸 바와 같이, 석션 타입의 냉각 팬 및 덕트의 반대편에 위치한 방열 부재를 적용한 전지 팩 2의 경우 51.3 내지 57.5℃의 온도를 갖는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한, 석션 타입의 냉각 팬 및 덕트의 방열 홀에 위치한 방열 부재를 적용한 전지 팩 4의 경우 51.0 내지 56.5℃의 온도를 갖는 것으로 확인되었다. 즉, 석션 타입의 냉각 팬이 적용되었을 경우 방열 부재가 덕트의 방열 홀에 위치할 때 방열 성능이 보다 우수함을 알 수 있다.
반면, 블로우 타입의 냉각 팬 및 덕트의 반대편에 위치한 방열 부재를 적용한 전지 팩 3의 경우 48.6 - 55.4℃의 온도를 갖는 것이 확인되었다. 즉, 방열 부재가 덕트의 반대편에 위치하는 전지 팩 2와 전지 팩 3을 비교한 결과, 석션 타입보다는 블로우 타입이 방열 효과가 우수함을 알 수 있다.
결과적으로, 방열 부재가 덕트와 반대편에 위치한 모듈의 측면 플레이트에 설치되고, 냉각 팬에 블로우 타입이 적용될 경우 방열 효과가 가장 우수함을 확인할 수 있다.
이상에서 설명한 것은 본 발명에 의한 전지 팩을 실시하기 위한 하나의 실시예에 불과한 것으로서, 본 발명은 상기 실시예에 한정되지 않고, 이하의 특허청구범위에서 청구하는 바와 같이 본 발명의 요지를 벗어남이 없이 당해 발명이 속하는 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 누구든지 다양한 변경 실시가 가능한 범위까지 본 발명의 기술적 정신이 있다고 할 것이다.
본 발명은 모듈의 내부로부터 외부로 연장된 방열 부재를 포함함으로써 모듈 내의 열을 외부로 용이하게 방출할 수 있으며, 여기에 덕트 및 냉각 팬을 더 포함하도록 구성함으로써 모듈의 냉각 효과를 극대화시킬 수 있는 전지 팩을 제공한다.

Claims (13)

  1. 다수의 단위 전지, 상기 단위 전지 사이에 개재되는 다수의 스페이서, 및 상기 단위 전지와 스페이서를 수용하는 모듈 케이스를 포함하는 적어도 하나의 모듈;
    상기 모듈에 삽입되며, 상기 모듈의 내부로부터 외부로 연장되는 다수의 방열 부재;
    개구를 포함하고, 상기 모듈의 일면에 설치되는 덕트; 및
    상기 덕트의 개구에 연결되는 냉각 팬을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서,
    상기 방열 부재는,
    상기 모듈 내로 삽입되어 상기 단위 전지와 스페이서 사이에 개재되는 삽입 플레이트와, 상기 삽입 플레이트로부터 절곡되어 상기 모듈의 외측으로 연장되는 연장 플레이트를 포함하는 방열판; 및
    상기 삽입 플레이트에 부착되는 방열 패드를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  3. 제 2 항에 있어서,
    상기 삽입 플레이트는 상기 단위 전지와 이격되고, 상기 스페이서와 직접 접촉하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  4. 제 2 항에 있어서,
    상기 방열 패드는 상기 단위 전지 및 삽입 플레이트 사이에 개재되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  5. 제 1 항에 있어서,
    상기 스페이서는 상기 다수의 단위 전지 사이의 경계를 따라 형성되는 다수의 방열 홀을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  6. 제 5 항에 있어서,
    상기 모듈 케이스는 상기 단위 전지의 서로 마주보는 한 쌍의 면을 덮는 한 쌍의 측면 플레이트를 포함하고,
    상기 측면 플레이트에는 상기 스페이서의 방열 홀과 대응되는 다수의 방열 홀이 형성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  7. 제 6 항에 있어서,
    상기 방열 부재는 상기 스페이서 및 측면 플레이트의 방열 홀을 통해 상기 모듈 내로 삽입되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  8. 제 6 항에 있어서,
    상기 덕트는 상기 한 쌍의 측면 플레이트 중 하나와 인접하도록 위치하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  9. 제 8 항에 있어서,
    상기 방열 부재는 상기 덕트와 반대편에 위치한 측면 플레이트의 방열 홀을 통해 상기 모듈 내로 삽입되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  10. 제 9 항에 있어서,
    상기 덕트는 상기 측면 플레이트의 방열 홀과 대응되는 다수의 방열 홀을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  11. 제 8 항에 있어서,
    상기 방열 부재는 상기 덕트와 인접한 측면 플레이트의 방열 홀을 통해 상기 모듈 내로 삽입되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  12. 제 11 항에 있어서,
    상기 덕트 중 상기 측면 플레이트와 인접한 일면에는 상기 다수의 방열 부재와 동시에 대응되는 하나의 방열 홀이 형성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
  13. 제 1 항에 있어서,
    상기 냉각 팬은 블로우(blow) 타입 또는 석션(suction) 타입 중 선택된 어느 하나로 이루어지는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지 팩.
