Abstract
본 발명은 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질, 및 이의 제조 방법에 관한 것으로, 구체적으로 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물; 및 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 상에 형성된 코팅층;을 포함하며, 상기 코팅층은 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질 및 이의 제조 방법에 관한 것이다.

[관련출원과의 상호인용]
본 발명은 2016.03.03에 출원된 한국 특허 출원 제10-2016-0025626호 및 2017.02.27에 출원된 한국 특허 출원 제10-2017-0025656호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용을 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함한다.
[기술분야]
본 발명은 양극활물질 및 이의 제조 방법에 관한 것으로, 구체적으로 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 화합물 함량을 저감시키고 표면 활성을 억제할 수 있는 코팅층을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질 및 이의 제조 방법과 관한 것이다.
휴대용의 소형 전기 전자기기의 보급이 확산됨에 따라 니켈 수소전지나 리튬 이차전지와 같은 신형의 이차전지 개발이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이 중 리튬 이차전지는 흑연 등의 카본을 음극활물질로 사용하고, 리튬을 함유하는 산화물을 양극활물질로 사용하며 비수용매를 전해액으로 사용하는 전지로서, 양극활물질로 사용되는 리튬이 이온화되는 경향이 큰 금속이기 때문에, 고전압 발현이 가능하여 에너지 밀도가 높은 전지를 제공할 수 있다.
상기 리튬을 함유하는 산화물로는 층상 구조의 리튬 함유 코발트 산화물 (LiCo2)이 주로 사용되고 있고, 그 외에 층상 결정 구조의 LiMnO2, 스피넬 결정구조의 LiMn2O4 등의 리튬 함유 망산 산화물과, 리튬 함유 니켈 산화물 (LiNiO2)의 사용이 고려되고 있다.
특히, 최근 Ni 함량이 높아 200mAh/g 이상으로 고용량 발현이 가능한 리튬-니켈계 고전압용 양극활물질에 대한 연구가 대두되고 있다.
그러나 상기 리튬-니켈계 양극활물질은 산소 분위기하에서 소성 공정을 진행함에도 불구하고, 제조된 양극활물질 표면에 리튬 카보네이트(Li2CO3) 및 리튬 하이드록사이드(LiOH)와 같은 리튬 유도체가 다량 잔류하게 된다. 더욱이, 상기 리튬-니켈계 양극활물질은 표면에 수분이 쉽게 흡착이 되어 장기 보관이 어렵다는 단점이 있다.
상기 양극활물질 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 전구체 및 수분은 양극 제조 공정 시에 젤레이션(gelation) 현상을 야기하여 전극 제조를 어렵게 할 뿐만 아니라, 이차전지 제조 후 충방전시에 양극활물질 표면의 퇴화를 가속화시켜 전지 성능을 저하시키는 원인이 되고 있다.
이러한 단점을 개선하기 위하여, 후속 수세 공정을 실시하는 방법이 제안되었다. 그러나 상기 방법은 추가 수세 공정으로 인해 공정 단계가 복잡하고, 제조 비용이 증가할 뿐만 아니라, 양산 규모에서 대량의 파우더를 짧은 시간 안에 수세하는 것은 사실상 불가능하다는 단점이 있다. 만약, 수세 공정 시간이 길어지는 경우, 양극활물질 표면뿐만 아니라 내부의 리튬 및 전이금속이 함께 용출되어 전지의 특성에 악영향을 준다.
이에, 리튬-니켈계 양극활물질 제조 시에, 양극활물질 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 및 수분으로 인한 전지 제조 어려움 및 성능 퇴화를 막을 수 있는 양극활물질 제조 방법에 대한 개발이 요구되고 있다.
상기와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위하여, 본 발명의 제1 기술적 과제는 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체 함량을 저감시키고 표면 활성을 억제할 수 있는 코팅층을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질을 제공하는 것이다.
또한, 본 발명의 제2 기술적 과제는 상기 코팅층을 포함하는 양극활물질의 제조 방법을 제공하는 것이다.
또한, 본 발명의 제3 기술적 과제는 상기 양극활물질을 포함함으로써, 성능 퇴화를 방지할 수 있는 양극을 제공하는 것이다.
또한, 본 발명의 제4 기술적 과제는 상기 양극을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공하는 것이다.
상기의 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 본 발명의 일 실시예에서는,
리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물; 및
상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 상에 형성된 코팅층;을 포함하며,
상기 코팅층은 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질을 제공한다.
상기 코팅층은 보론을 더 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 또 다른 일 실시예에서는, 상기 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질을 제조하는 방법을 제공한다.
구체적으로, 상기 양극활물질을 제조하는 방법(1)은
리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;
옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 제조하는 단계;
상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하여 혼합물을 형성하는 단계; 및
상기 혼합물을 열처리하여 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 방법에서, 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 액상 또는 파우더 상태일 수 있다.
상기 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 300℃의 온도 범위에서 실시할 수 있다.
상기 방법은 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하는 단계에서, 보론 전구체를 더 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질의 제조 방법(2)은
리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;
옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 제조하는 단계;
보론 전구체를 제조하는 단계;
상기 보론 전구체와, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 형성하는 단계;
상기 제1 혼합물을 1차 열처리하여 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 보론 화합물을 포함하는 제1 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;
상기 제1 코팅층이 형성된 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 형성하는 단계; 및
상기 제2 혼합물을 2차 열처리하여 상기 제1 코팅층 상에 제2 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 방법에서 1차 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 450℃의 온도 범위에서 실시할 수 있다.
상기 2차 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 300℃의 온도 범위에서 실시할 수 있다.
상기 방법에서, 보론 전구체, 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 액상 또는 파우더 상태일 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예에서는 상기 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질을 포함하는 양극을 제공한다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예에서는 상기의 리튬 이차전지용 양극과 음극, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공한다.
본 발명에 따르면, 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 표면에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층을 형성함으로써, 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 카보네이트 및 리튬 하이드록사이드 등의 리튬 유도체의 함량을 저감시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 장기 보관 시 수분 흡착량을 저감시킬 수 있는 양극활물질을 제공할 수 있다. 따라서, 잔류하는 리튬 유도체 및 수분으로 인해 발생하는 양극활물질의 젤레이션 현상을 방지할 수 있고, 이들과 전해액의 부반응에 의한 가스 발생을 억제할 수 있다.
그 결과, 본 발명의 양극활물질을 포함하는 양극과 이를 구비한 이차전지는 우수한 용량 특성을 가짐과 동시에 우수한 수명 특성을 나타낼 수 있다. 이에, 이를 필요로 하는 산업, 특히 전기자동차 등의 고용량, 장기 수명 특성을 필요로 하는 산업에 용이하게 적용할 수 있다.
명세서에 첨부되는 다음의 도면은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 전술한 발명의 내용과 함께 본 발명의 기술 사상을 더욱 이해시키는 역할을 하는 것이므로, 본 발명은 그러한 도면에 기재된 사항에만 한정되어 해석되어서는 안 된다.
도 1 및 도 2는 본 발명의 실험예 1에 따른 양극활물질 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량을 측정한 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 3 및 도 4는 본 발명의 실험예 2에 따른 리튬 이차전지의 용량 테스트 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 5 및 도 6은 본 발명의 실험예 3에 따른 리튬 이차전지의 사이클 수명 특성 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.
이하, 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
이하에서는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 코팅층을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질과, 이의 제조방법의 구성에 대하여 구체적으로 설명하도록 한다.

먼저, 본 발명의 일실시예에서는
리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물; 및
상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 상에 형성된 코팅층;을 포함하며,
상기 코팅층은 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질을 제공한다.
본 발명의 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질에 있어서, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물은 하기 화학식 1로 나타낼 수 있다.

상기 식 중에서,
M은 Al, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ag, Ca, Na, K, In, Ga, Ge, V, Mo, Nb, Si, Ti 및 Zr로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상의 금속 원소이고, -0.1≤a<0.2, 0≤b<1, 0≤c<1, 0≤d≤0.2이다.
이때, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 중 니켈은 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 중 리튬을 제외한 전이금속의 전체 몰수를 기준으로 40몰% 이상, 바람직하게 40 내지 95몰%로 포함될 수 있다.
상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물은 미소 입자들의 응집체로 이루어진 응집상(agglomerated) 구조의 2차 입자로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물의 평균 입경(D50)은 3㎛ 내지 30㎛일 수 있다. 만약, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물의 평균 입경이 3㎛ 미만인 경우, 전극 제조 시 작은 입자에 대한 바인더의 과량 사용으로 에너지 밀도 및 접착강도가 저하될 수 있고, 30㎛을 초과한 경우 출력 특성이 낮고, 전극 제조시 압연에 의한 입자 깨짐이 발생할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질에 있어서, 상기 코팅층에 포함되는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물은 양이온으로 Li, B, Mg, Ca, V, Sr, Ba, Y, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ir, Ni, Zn, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, La, Ce, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr, Sc, Fe, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, Sb, Hf, Ta, Re, Os, Pt, Au, Tl, Pb, Bi 및 Po로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상의 원소의 이온을 포함하고, 음이온으로 C2O4
2을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 양극활물질에 있어서, 상기 코팅층은 보론을 더 포함할 수 있다.
즉, 본 발명의 코팅층은 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 단층 구조, 또는 금속과 보론을 포함하는 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 단층 구조이거나, 또는 보론 화합물을 포함하는 제1 코팅층과 금속과 보론을 포함하는 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 제2 코팅층으로 이루어진 다층 구조일 수도 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 코팅층은 리튬 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-보론 옥살레이트 화합물, 마그네슘 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-마그네슘 옥살레이트 화합물, 마그네슘-보론 옥살레이트, 리튬 마그네슘-보론 옥살레이트, 나트륨 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-나트륨 옥살레이트 화합물, 나트륨-보론 옥살레이트, 리튬 나트륨-보론 옥살레이트, 알루미늄 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-알루미늄 옥살레이트 화합물, 알루미늄-보론 옥살레이트, 리튬 알루미늄-보론 옥살레이트, 칼슘 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-칼슘 옥살레이트 화합물, 칼슘-보론 옥살레이트, 리튬 칼슘-보론 옥살레이트, 망간 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-망간 옥살레이트 화합물, 망간-보론 옥살레이트, 리튬 망간-보론 옥살레이트, 지르코늄 옥살레이트 화합물, 리튬-지르코늄 옥살레이트 화합물, 지르코늄-보론 옥살레이트, 및 리튬 지르코늄-보론 옥살레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질에 있어서, 상기 금속 옥살레이트 화합물은 양극활물질 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 내지 5 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
상기 금속 옥살레이트 화합물이 상기 함량 범위로 포함되는 경우, 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 표면에 구조적으로 안정한 코팅층이 형성될 수 있다. 결론적으로 열적 안정성 및 용량 특성이 우수한 복합 양극활물질을 얻을 수 있다. 만약, 코팅층 내에 포함된 금속 옥살레이트 화합물의 함량이 5 중량%를 초과하면 과량의 금속 옥살레이트 화합물에 의해 코팅층의 두께가 증가함으로써, 저항층으로 작용하여 셀 용량이 크게 감소될 수 있다. 만약, 금속 옥살레이트 화합물의 함량이 0.01 중량% 미만인 경우 코팅층의 두께가 너무 얇아, 본 발명에서 목적하는 양극활물질의 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체 함량의 저감 효과 및 수분 흡착 저감 효과가 미미하고, 전해액에 의한 분해 방지 효과가 낮을 수 있다.
본 발명의 양극활물질에 있어서, 상기 코팅층은 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 전면 또는 일부에 형성될 수 있으며, 그 두께는 5㎚ 내지 1㎛ 일 수 있다. 만약, 상기 두께가 5㎚ 미만인 경우 두께가 너무 얇아 본 발명에서 목적하는 양극활물질의 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체 함량의 저감 효과 및 수분 흡착 저감 효과가 미미하고, 전해액 분해 방지 효과가 저하될 수 있으며, 1㎛ 이상이면 저항을 증가시켜 셀 용량이 크게 감소할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 코팅층을 포함하는 본 발명의 양극활물질의 평균 입경(D50)은 3㎛ 내지 30㎛인 것이 바람직하다. 만약, 평균 입경이 3㎛ 미만인 경우 양극활물질 슬러리 내 분산이 어렵거나, 전극 내 양극활물질이 응집하는 문제가 있을 수 있고, 평균 입경이 30㎛를 초과하는 경우, 전극 제조 시 압연에 의한 입자 깨짐이 발생할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 안정화되지 않는 새로운 표면이 전해액과 접촉하게 되어 전해액 분해 반응을 방지 효과가 미비하기 때문에, 전지의 수명이 감소될 수 있다.
이때, 상기 양극활물질의 평균 입경(D50)은 레이저 회절법(laser diffraction method)을 이용하여 측정할 수 있다. 상기 레이저 회절법은 일반적으로 서브미크론(submicron) 영역에서부터 수 mm 정도의 입경의 측정이 가능하며, 고 재현성 및 고 분해성의 결과를 얻을 수 있다.
본 발명의 양극활물질에 있어서, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물의 표면에는 코어부로부터 확산된 리튬이 리튬 카보네이트(Li2CO3) 또는 리튬 하이드록사이드(LiOH) 등과 같은 리튬 유도체의 형태로 존재하게 된다. 이러한 리튬 유도체들은 열처리 과정에서 용해 또는 용융된 상태의 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물에 존재하는 옥살산 이온 또는 옥살레이트기와 반응하여 강한 금속-산소 공유 결합을 형성하면서, 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물의 표면에 안정한 코팅층을 형성할 수 있다.
즉, 본 발명의 양극활물질은 코팅층 형성을 위해 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물의 표면에 존재하는 리튬 및 리튬 유도체가 소모되면서, 리튬 유도체 함량을 저감시킬 수 있고, 이에 따라 양극활물질 표면의 pH를 낮추어 장기 보관 시 수분 흡착량을 줄여 양극활물질의 전극 제조 시 발생하는 슬러리의 젤레이션에 현상을 방지할 수 있다. 나아가, 상기 코팅층은 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 표면에 형성되어, 전해액과의 직접적인 접촉을 차단하여 표면 활성을 억제함으로써 전해액에 의한 산화 및 부반응을 억제하는 효과를 가져올 수 있다.
특히, 본 발명의 양극활물질은 보론 화합물을 더 포함함으로써 더욱 안정한 단층 또는 다층 구조의 코팅층을 형성하여, 더욱 향상된 장기 수명 효과를 구현할 수 있다.
이러한 본 발명의 양극활물질을 포함하는 경우, 이차전지의 양극 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체 및 수분에 의한 전해액과의 부반응, 및 이로 인한 가스 발생을 억제할 수 있으므로, 안전성 및 사이클 특성이 향상된 이차전지를 제조할 수 있다.

또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예에서는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질을 제조하는 방법을 제공할 수 있다. 이때, 본 발명에서는 양극활물질을 제조하기 위한 방법은 다음과 같은 하나 이상의 방법을 포함할 수 있다.
구체적으로, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른, 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법(1)은 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;
옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 제조하는 단계;
상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하여 혼합물을 형성하는 단계; 및
상기 혼합물을 열처리하여 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)에 있어서, 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자는 통상적인 방법에 의해 제조할 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자는 전이금속 전구체와 리튬 원료를 혼합하고 소성하여 제조할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)에 있어서, 상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 액상 또는 파우더 상태일 수 있다.
상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체가 액상인 경우는 용매에 옥살산 또는 금속-옥살레이트 화합물을 용해시켜 제조할 수 있다.
상기 용매는 옥살산 또는 금속-옥살레이트 화합물을 용해할 수 있는 유, 무기 용매면 특별히 제한하지 않으며, 그 대표적인 예로 물, 에탄올, 메탄올, 이소프로필 알코올, 에틸렌 글리콜, 부틸렌 글리콜 등 알코올류, 벤젠, 톨루엔, 디클로로메탄, 클로로포름, 디클로로에탄, 트리클로로에탄, 테트라클로로에탄, 디클로로에틸렌, 트리클로로에틸렌, 테트라클로로에틸렌 클로로벤젠, 오르소-디클로로벤젠, 에틸에테르, 디옥산, 테트라하이드로부탄, 아세톤, 메틸에틸케톤(MEK), 메틸부틸케톤(MBK), 메틸이소부틸케톤(MIBK), 에틸렌글리콜모노메틸에테르, 에틸렌글리콜모노에틸에테르, 에틸렌글리콜모노에틸에테르, 또는 에틸렌글리콜모노부틸에테르 등의 유무기 용매를 포함할 수 있다
상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체가 액상인 경우, 액상 코팅 용액 농도는 0.01 중량% 내지 50 중량%인 것이 바람직하다. 만약, 코팅 용액의 농도가 0.01 중량% 미만인 경우, 건조시간 및 에너지 소비가 크다는 단점이 있고, 50 중량%를 초과한 경우, 코팅의 균일성이 저하된다는 단점이 있다.
또한, 상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체가 파우더 형태인 경우는 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 막자사발(乳鉢)에 넣고 분쇄하여 제조한 것을 사용할 수 있다.
본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)에 있어서, 상기 옥살산 또는 금속-옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 혼합하는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 약 0.01 중량% 내지 5 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
만약 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체 함량이 혼합하는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 미만인 경우, 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에서 리튬 유도체 함량 감소 효과가 충분하지 않고, 혼합하는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 중량을 기준으로 5 중량% 초과인 경우 전지용량 및 출력 특성이 감소하는 문제점이 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)에 있어서, 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체가 액상인 경우, 건조를 위하여 상기 열처리 단계 전에 액상 용액을 구성하는 용매를 제거하는 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 용매 제거 단계는 사용된 용매를 용이하게 제거할 수 있도록 용매의 비점 이상의 온도로 가열하여 실시하는 것이 바람직하며, 약 130℃ 이상, 구체적으로 130℃ 내지 200℃의 온도 범위에서 실시하는 것이 바람직하다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)은 상기 용매 제거 단계 후에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 함유 코팅층 형성과 동시에 수분제거 효과를 부여하기 위하여, 열처리 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 300℃ 온도 범위에서 실시할 수 있으며, 만약 150℃ 미만의 온도에서 열처리하는 경우, 리튬 및 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 함유 코팅층 형성 반응이나, 수분 제거 효과가 충분하게 이루어지지 않고, 350℃ 초과의 온도에서 열처리하는 경우 리튬 및 금속 옥살레이트 화합물이 분해되는 단점이 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)은 상기 열처리 단계 후에 경우에 따라서 유발에 넣고 분쇄하거나 체질하는 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
바람직하게, 본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(1)은 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하는 단계에서, 장기 수명 향상 효과를 얻을 수 있는 보론 전구체를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 보론 전구체는 그 대표적인 예로 붕산, 보론 옥사이드, 리튬 붕산염, 마그네슘 붕산염, 소듐 붕산염, 칼륨 붕산염, 및 칼슘 붕산염으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 보론 전구체를 포함하는 경우, 금속 보론 옥살레이트 화합물의 코팅 효과를 향상시켜, 장기 수명 효과를 추가로 구현할 수 있다. 상기 보론 전구체는 상기 리튬 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 내지 10 중량%로 포함되는 것이 바람직하다. 상술한 범위 미만이면 보론 전구체로 인한 효과를 구현할 수 없고, 상술한 범위를 초과하면, 과도한 코팅층의 형성으로 양극재의 용량이 저하되고 저항이 증가하는 문제점이 있다.
전술한 바와 같은, 본 발명의 양극활물질의 제조 방법(1-1)은
리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;
용매에 옥살산 또는 금속-옥살레이트 화합물을 용해시켜 코팅 용액을 제조하는 단계;
상기 코팅 용액에 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 혼합 후, 가열하여 용매를 제거하는 단계; 및
용매 제거 후, 상기 혼합물을 열처리하여 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질의 제조 방법(1-2)은
리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;
옥살산 파우더 또는 금속 옥살레이트 파우더를 제조하는 단계;

리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;

상기 보론 전구체와, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 형성하는 단계;

상기 방법에서, 보론 전구체, 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 액상 또는 파우더 상태일 수 있으며, 상기 보론 전구체는 파우더 상태인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 내지 5 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
만약 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체 함량이 혼합하는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 미만인 경우, 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에서 리튬 유도체 함량 감소 효과가 충분하지 않고, 혼합하는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 중량을 기준으로 5 중량% 초과인 경우 전지용량 및 출력 특성이 감소하는 문제점이 있다.
또한, 상기 방법에서 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체가 액상인 경우, 상기 2차 열처리 전에 용매를 제거하는 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 용매 제거 단계는 사용된 용매를 용이하게 제거할 수 있도록 용매의 비점 이상의 온도로 가열하여 실시하는 것이 바람직하며, 약 130℃ 이상, 구체적으로 130℃ 내지 200℃의 온도 범위에서 실시하는 것이 바람직하다.
또한, 상기 보론 전구체는 그 대표적인 예로 붕산, 보론 옥사이드, 리튬 붕산염, 마그네슘 붕산염, 소듐 붕산염, 칼륨 붕산염, 및 칼슘 붕산염으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 보론 전구체는 상기 리튬 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 내지 10 중량%로 포함되는 것이 바람직하다. 보론 전구체를 포함하는 경우, 금속 보론 옥살레이트 화합물의 코팅 효과를 추가로 향상시킬 수 있다. 상술한 범위 미만이면 보론 전구체로 인한 효과를 구현할 수 없고, 상술한 범위를 초과하면, 과도한 코팅층의 형성으로 양극재의 용량이 저하되고 저항이 증가하는 문제점이 있다.
한편, 상기 제2 코팅층은 금속과 보론을 포함하는 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함할 수 있는데, 이 경우 상기 제2 코팅층 내에 포함된 보론은 상기 제2 코팅층 형성과정에서 상기 제1 코팅층에 포함된 보론이 상기 제2 코팅층으로 확산된 것일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 형성하는 단계에서, 장기 수명 향상 효과를 얻을 수 있는 상기 보론 전구체를 더 포함할 수 있다.
전술한 바와 같이, 본 발명에서는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 2층 구조의 코팅층, 예컨대 보론을 포함하는 제1 코팅층을 형성한 다음, 그 표면에 금속과 보론을 포함하는 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 제2 코팅층을 형성함으로써, 양극재의 용량이 증가하고, 장기 수명 특성 및 사이클 특성이 향상된 이차전지용 양극활물질을 제조할 수 있다.
이때, 본 발명의 양극활물질의 제조 방법(2)은 양극재의 용량이 증가하고, 사이클 특성이 향상되는 효과를 부여하기 위하여, 상기 보론 화합물을 포함하는 제1 코팅층이 형성된 제1 입자를 150℃ 내지 450℃ 온도에서 1차 열처리하는 단계를 실시할 수 있다.
만약, 150℃ 미만의 온도에서 열처리하는 경우, 보론 화합물 코팅층 형성 반응이나, 수분 제거 효과가 충분하게 이루어지지 않고, 450℃ 초과의 온도에서 열처리하는 경우 보론 화합물이 분해되는 단점이 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 양극활물질 제조 방법(2)은 상기 용매 제거 단계 후에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 함유 코팅층 형성과 동시에 수분제거 효과를 부여하기 위하여, 2차 열처리 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 2차 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 300℃ 온도 범위에서 실시할 수 있으며, 만약 150℃ 미만의 온도에서 열처리하는 경우, 리튬 및 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 함유 코팅층 형성 반응이나, 보론의 제2 코팅층 내 확산이 이루어지지 않을 수 있고 수분 제거 효과가 충분하게 이루어지지 않고, 350℃ 초과의 온도에서 열처리하는 경우 리튬 및 금속 옥살레이트 화합물이 분해되는 단점이 있다.
리튬 이차전지용 양극
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예에서는 상기의 양극활물질을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극을 제공한다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 상기 양극은 상기 양극활물질을 포함하는 양극활물질 슬러리를 양극 집전체에 도포하고 건조 및 압연하여 제조할 수 있다.
이때, 상기 양극 집전체는 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소 또는 알루미늄이나 스테인레스 스틸 표면에 탄소, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면 처리한 것 등이 사용될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 집전체는 통상적으로 3㎛ 내지 500㎛의 두께를 가질 수 있으며, 상기 집전체 표면 상에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 양극활물질의 접착력을 높일 수도 있다. 예를 들어 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 사용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 양극활물질은 선택적으로 도전재, 바인더 및 충진제 중 선택된 하나 이상을 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 도전재는 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들어 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 카본블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 써멀 블랙 등의 탄소계 물질; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본, 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스키; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 도전재는 통상적으로 양극활물질을 포함한 혼합물 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 내지 30 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 활물질과 도전재 등의 결합 및 집전체에 대한 결합에 조력하는 성분이면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들어 폴리불화비닐리덴, 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복시메틸셀룰로우즈(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로우즈, 재생 셀룰로우즈, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔 모노머(EPDM), 술폰화 EPDM, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무, 불소 고무, 다양한 공중합체 등을 들 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 통상적으로 양극활물질을 포함하는 혼합물 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 중량% 내지 30 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
상기 충진제는 전극의 팽창을 억제하는 성분으로서 선택적으로 사용될 수 있으며, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않는 섬유상 재료라면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌 등의 올레핀계 중합체; 유리섬유, 탄소섬유 등의 섬유상 물질이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 도포는 당업계에 통상적으로 공지된 방법에 의하여 수행할 수 있으나, 예컨대 상기 양극활물질 슬러리를 상기 양극 집전체 일측 상면에 분배시킨 후 닥터 블레이드(doctor blade) 등을 사용하여 균일하게 분산시켜 수행할 수 있다. 이외에도, 다이 캐스팅(die casting), 콤마 코팅(comma coating), 스크린 프린팅(screen printing) 등의 방법을 통하여 수행할 수 있다.
상기 건조는 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니나 50℃ 내지 200℃의 진공오븐에서 1일 이내로 수행하는 것일 수 있다.
리튬 이차전지
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예에서는
양극, 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해액을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공할 수 있다.
상기 음극은 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니나, 음극 집전체 일측 상면에 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극 활물질 슬러리를 도포한 후 건조하여 제조할 수 있으며, 상기 음극 활물질 슬러리는 음극 활물질 이외에 필요에 따라 앞서 설명한 바와 같은 도전재, 바인더, 충진제 등의 성분들이 포함될 수 있다.
상기 음극 집전체는 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 구리, 스테인레스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 구리나 스테인레스 스틸의 표면에 탄소, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면처리한 것, 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 집전체는 통상적으로 3㎛ 내지 500㎛의 두께를 가질 수 있으며, 양극 집전체와 마찬가지로, 상기 집전체 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 음극활물질의 결합력을 강화시킬 수도 있다. 예를 들어, 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 사용될 수 있다.
상기 음극활물질로는, 예를 들어, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 팽창 흑연, 탄소섬유, 난흑연화성 탄소, 카본블랙, 카본나노튜브, 플러렌, 활성탄 등의 탄소 및 흑연재료; 리튬과 합금이 가능한 Al, Si, Sn, Ag, Bi, Mg, Zn, In, Ge, Pb, Pd, Pt, Ti 등의 금속 및 이러한 원소를 포함하는 화합물; 금속 및 그 화합물과 탄소 및 흑연재료의 복합물; 리튬 함유 질화물 등을 들 수 있다. 그 중에서도 탄소계 활물질, 규소계 활물질, 주석계 활물질, 또는 규소-탄소계 활물질이 더욱 바람직하며, 이들은 단독으로 또는 둘 이상의 조합으로 사용될 수도 있다.
상기 음극에 사용되는 도전재, 바인더, 충전제 등은 앞서 언급한 양극 제조에 사용된 것과 동일하거나, 포함되는 것일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 분리막은 양극과 음극 사이에 개재되며, 높은 이온 투과도와 기계적 강도를 가지는 절연성의 얇은 박막이 사용될 수 있다. 분리막의 기공 직경은 일반적으로 0.01㎛ 내지 10㎛이고, 두께는 일반적으로 5㎛ 내지 300㎛일 수 있다.
상기 분리막은 예를 들어, 내화학성 및 소수성의 폴리프로필렌 등의 올레핀계 폴리머; 유리섬유 또는 폴리에틸렌 등으로 만들어진 시트나 부직포 등이 사용될 수 있다.
전해질로서 폴리머 등의 고체 전해질이 사용되는 경우에는 고체 전해질이 분리막을 겸할 수도 있다.
상기 리튬염 함유 비수계 전해액은 전해액과 리튬염으로 이루어져 있으며, 상기 전해액으로는 비수계 유기용매 또는 유기 고체 전해질 등이 사용된다.
상기 비수계 유기용매로는, 예를 들어, N-메틸-2-피롤리디논, 프로필렌 카르보네이트, 에틸렌 카르보네이트, 부틸렌 카르보네이트, 디메틸 카르보네이트, 디에틸 카르보네이트, 감마-부티로락톤, 1,2-디메톡시에탄, 테트라히드록시푸란, 2-메틸 테트라하이드로푸란, 디메틸술폭시드, 1,3-디옥소런, 포름아미드, 디메틸포름아미드, 디옥소런, 아세토니트릴, 니트로메탄, 포름산 메틸, 초산메틸, 인산 트리에스테르, 트리메톡시 메탄, 디옥소런 유도체, 설포란, 메틸 설포란, 1,3-디메틸-2-이미다졸리디논, 프로필렌 카르보네이트 유도체, 테트라하이드로푸란 유도체, 에테르, 프로피온산 메틸, 프로피온산 에틸 등의 비양자성 유기용매가 사용될 수 있다.
상기 유기 고체 전해질로는, 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌 유도체, 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드 유도체, 폴리프로필렌 옥사이드 유도체, 인산 에스테르 폴리머, 폴리 에지테이션 리신(agitation lysine), 폴리에스테르 술파이드, 폴리비닐 알코올, 폴리 불화 비닐리덴, 이온성 해리기를 포함하는 중합제 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 리튬염은 상기 비수계 전해질에 용해되기 좋은 물질로서, 예를 들어, LiCl, LiBr, LiI, LiClO4, LiBF4, LiB10C10, LiPF6, LiCF3SO3, LiCF3CO2, LiAsF6, LiSbF6, LiAlCl4, CH3SO3Li, CF3SO3Li, (CF3SO2)2NLi, 클로로보란 리튬, 저급 지방족 카르본산 리튬, 4-페닐붕산리튬, 이미드 등이 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 전해액에는 충방전 특성, 난연성 등의 개선을 목적으로, 예를 들어, 피리딘, 트리에틸포스파이트, 트리에탄올아민, 환상 에테르, 에틸렌 디아민, n-글라임(glyme), 헥사 인산 트리 아미드, 니트로벤젠 유도체, 유황, 퀴논 이민 염료, N-치환 옥사졸리디논, N,N-치환 이미다졸리딘, 에틸렌글리콜 디알킬에테르, 암모늄염, 피롤, 2-메톡시 에탄올, 삼염화 알루미늄 등이 첨가될 수도 있다. 경우에 따라서는, 불연성을 부여하기 위하여, 사염화탄소, 삼불화에틸렌 등의 할로겐 함유 용매를 더 포함시킬 수도 있고, 고온 보존 특성을 향상시키기 위하여 이산화탄산 가스를 더 포함시킬 수도 있다.
본 발명의 리튬 이차전지는 전지의 용도에 따른 외형에 제한이 없으며, 예를 들면, 캔을 사용한 원통형, 각형, 파우치(pouch)형 또는 코인(coin)형 등이 될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지는 소형 디바이스의 전원으로 사용되는 전지셀에 사용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다수의 전지셀들을 포함하는 중대형 전지모듈에 단위전지로도 바람직하게 사용될 수 있다. 상기 중대형 디바이스의 바람직한 예로는 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차, 전력 저장용 시스템 등을 들 수 있지만, 이들 만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명한다. 그러나 본 발명에 따른 실시예는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예는 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.

상기 양극활물질과 도전재로 카본블랙 및 바인더로 PVDF를 96 : 2 : 2 중량비로 혼합하여 양극 슬러리를 제조한 후, 상기 슬러리를 Al 호일에 도포한 후 압연 및 건조하여 이차전지용 양극을 제조하였다.
상기 양극과, 음극활물질로 Li 금속을 사용하고, 양극과 음극 사이에 다공성 폴리에틸렌의 분리막을 개재하고, 전해액을 주입하여 이차전지를 제조하였다. 상기 전해액은 에틸렌카보네이트/ 디메틸카보네이트/ 에틸메틸카보네이트(EC/DEC/EMC의 혼합 부피비=3/4/3)로 이루어진 유기 용매에 1.0M 농도의 리튬헥사플루오로포스페이트(LiPF6)를 용해시켜 제조한 것이었다.

100g의 증류수 중에 5g의 시트르산 (C6H8O7)를 용해시킨 후 교반하여 농도 5%의 시트르산 용액을 제조하였다.
시트르산 용액 4g과 제조예 7의 리튬-니켈 전이금속 산화물 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2) 50g을 혼합한 다음, 상기 혼합물을 150℃에서 6시간 동안 건조한 후, 250℃에서 6시간 동안 열처리하고 유발 및 체질하여 리튬-니켈 전이금속 산화물(LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2) 표면에 리튬 시트레이트 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층이 형성된 양극활물질(평균입경(D50): 10㎛)을 제조하였다.
상기 양극활물질과 도전재로 카본블랙 및 바인더로 PVDF를 96 : 2 : 2 중량비로 혼합하여 양극 슬러리를 제조한 후, 상기 슬러리를 Al 호일에 도포한 후 압연 및 건조하여 이차전지용 양극을 제조하였다.
상기 양극과, 음극활물질로 Li 금속을 사용하고, 양극과 음극 사이에 다공성 폴리에틸렌의 분리막을 개재하고, 전해액을 주입하여 이차전지를 제조하였다. 상기 전해액은 에틸렌카보네이트/ 디메틸카보네이트/ 에틸메틸카보네이트(EC/DEC/EMC의 혼합 부피비=3/4/3)로 이루어진 유기 용매에 1.0M 농도의 리튬헥사플루오로포스페이트(LiPF6)를 용해시켜 제조한 것이었다.
실험예
실험예
1. 표면 잔류 리튬 유도체 함량 평가
실시예 1 내지 실시예 14, 비교예 1, 비교예 2 및 비교예 3의 양극활물질 5g을 증류수 100㎖가 담긴 비이커에 넣고, 5분간 200rpm의 속도로 교반하여 표면에 잔류하는 리튬을 용해시킨 후, 평균 기공크기 0.5 내지 5㎛의 필터를 이용하여 잔류하는 리튬 용해액에서 양극활물질을 제거하였다.
양극활물질이 제거된 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체를 1N 농도의 HCl 용액으로 적정하여 용해액 중 리튬의 양을 측정하였다.
상기 용해액 중 리튬의 양 측정은 자동적정기를 사용하며 pH 7 내지 9에서 pH가 급속히 변하는 1차 변곡점(EP1)과 pH가 5에 도달하는 종말점(FP)을 측정하고 다음의 식으로 Li2CO3의 함량과 LiOH의 함량을 계산한다.
Li2CO3의 함량(%): (FP-EP1) × 0.1 × 0.001 × (Li2CO3의 Mw(73.89)/5) × 100
LiOH의 함량(%): (2 × EP1-FP) × 0.1 × 0.001 × (LiOH의 Mw(23.94)/5) × 100
계산된 Li2CO3의 함량과 LiOH의 함량을 합하여 최종 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량을 측정하였고, 상기 표면에 잔류 리튬 유도체의 함량을 양극활물질 총 중량에 대하여 중량%로 환산하여, 그 결과를 도 1 및 도 2에 나타내었다.

먼저, 도 1을 살펴보면, 코팅층이 형성되기 전인 비교예 1의 양극활물질 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량은 0.6중량%인 반면, 코팅층을 포함하는 본 발명의 실시예 1 내지 3, 실시예 5, 실시예 7 내지 10, 실시예 12, 및 실시예 13의 양극활물질 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량은 모두 0.4중량% 이하로 감소한 것을 알 수 있다.
또한, 도 2를 살펴보면, 코팅층이 형성되지 않은 비교예 2의 양극활물질의 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량은 1.2중량%로 높은 반면, 코팅층을 포함하는 본 발명의 실시예 4, 실시예 6, 실시예 11 및 실시예 14의 양극활물질 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량은 모두 0.7중량% 이하로 감소한 것을 알 수 있다.
하지만 금속 시트레이트를 포함하는 코팅층이 형성된 비교예 5의 양극활물질은 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량이 1.4중량%로 오히려 증가한 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
따라서, 본 발명과 같이 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 함유 코팅층을 포함하는 본 발명의 양극활물질은 표면에 잔류하는 리튬 유도체의 함량을 저감시킬 수 있음을 알 수 있다.
실험예
2.
실시예 1 내지 실시예 14, 비교예 1 내지 비교예 3, 참고예 1 및 참고예 2의 이차전지에 대한 셀 용량 테스트를 실시하였다. 구체적으로, 25℃에서 0.1C의 정전류(CC) 4.35V가 될 때까지 충전하고, 이후 4.35V의 정전압(CV)으로 충전하여 충전전류가 0.05C가 될 때까지 1회째의 충전을 행하였다. 이후 20분간 방치한 다음 0.1C의 정전류로 3.0V가 될 때까지 방전하여 방전전류가 0.05C가 될 때까지 방전하여 1회째의 방전용량을 측정하였다. 그 결과를 도 3 및 도 4에 나타내었다.

먼저, 도 3을 살펴보면, 비교예 1의 이차전지와, 금속 옥살레이트 함량이 적은 코팅층을 포함하는 양극활물질을 이용한 참고예 1의 이차전지의 경우, 방전용량이 180 mAh/g인 것을 알 수 있다. 특히, 과량의 금속 옥살레이트 화합물이 형성된 코팅층을 포함하는 양극활물질을 이용한 참고예 2의 이차전지의 경우, 방전용량이 165 mAh/g 이하로 가장 낮은 것을 알 수 있다. 반면에, 금속 옥살레이트를 포함하는 코팅층을 포함하는 본 발명의 양극활물질을 이용한 실시예 1 내지 3, 실시예 5, 실시예 7 내지 10, 실시예 12, 및 실시예 13의 이차전지는 방전용량이 모두 180 mAh/g 이상으로 향상되었음을 알 수 있다.
또한, 도 4를 살펴보면, 코팅층이 형성되지 않은 양극활물질을 이용한 비교예 2의 이차전지 보다 본 발명의 실시예 4, 실시예 6, 실시예 11 및 실시예 14의 이차전지의 방전용량이 모두 향상되었음을 알 수 있다. 이에 반해 리튬 시트레이트를 포함하는 코팅층이 형성된 비교예 3의 리튬이차전지의 방전용량은 코팅층 형성 전에 비해 감소하였음을 알 수 있다.
실험예

실시예 1 내지 실시예 14, 비교예 1 내지 비교예 3, 참고예 1 및 참고예 2의 이차전지에 대한 사이클 수명 테스트를 실시하였다. 구체적으로, 25℃에서 1C의 정전류(CC) 4.35V가 될 때까지 충전하고, 이후 4.35V의 정전압(CV)으로 충전하여 충전전류가 0.05C가 될 때까지 1회째의 충전을 행하였다. 이후 20분간 방치한 다음 2C의 정전류로 3.0V가 될 때까지 방전하여 방전전류가 0.05C가 될 때까지 방전하였다. 이를 1 내지 50회 사이클로 반복 실시하고 얻어진 결과를 도 5 및 6에 나타내었다.

먼저, 도 5를 살펴보면, 코팅층이 형성되지 않은 양극활물질을 이용한 비교예 1의 이차전지와, 금속 옥살레이트 함량이 적은 코팅층을 포함하는 양극활물질을 이용한 참고예 1의 이차전지, 및 과량의 금속 옥살레이트 화합물이 형성된 코팅층을 포함하는 양극활물질을 이용한 참고예 2의 이차전지의 경우, 사이클 수명이 10번째 사이클부터 급격히 저하되는 반면에, 본 발명의 실시예 1 내지 3, 실시예 5, 실시예 7 내지 10, 실시예 12, 실시예 13의 이차전지는 사이클 수명 특성이 향상되었음을 알 수 있다.
또한, 도 6을 살펴보면, 코팅층이 형성되지 않은 양극활물질을 이용한 비교예 2의 이차전지 보다 본 발명의 실시예 4, 실시예 6, 실시예 11 및 실시예 14의 이차전지의 사이클 수명 특성이 향상되었음을 알 수 있다. 이에 반해 리튬 시트레이트를 포함하는 코팅층이 형성된 비교예 3의 이차전지의 사이클 수명 특성은 코팅전에 비해 악화되었음을 알 수 있었다.
Claims (24)
- 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물; 및상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 상에 형성된 코팅층;을 포함하며,상기 코팅층은 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물은 하기 화학식 1로 나타내는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.[화학식 1]Li1+aNi1-b-cMnbCocMdO2상기 식 중에서,M은 Al, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ag, Ca, Na, K, In, Ga, Ge, V, Mo, Nb, Si, Ti 및 Zr으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상의 금속 원소이고, -0.1≤a<0.2, 0≤b<1, 0≤c<1, 0≤d≤0.2이다.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 중 니켈은 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 중 리튬을 제외한 전이금속의 전체 몰수를 기준으로 40몰% 이상 포함되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물은 미소 입자들의 응집체로 이루어진 응집상 구조의 2차 입자로 형성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물의 평균 입경(D50)은 3㎛ 내지 30㎛인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 금속 옥살레이트 화합물은 양이온으로 Li, B, Mg, Ca, V, Sr, Ba, Y, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ir, Ni, Zn, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, La, Ce, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr, Sc, Fe, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, Sb, Hf, Ta, Re, Os, Pt, Au, Tl, Pb, Bi 및 Po로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상의 원소의 이온을 포함하고,음이온으로 C2O4 2 -을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.

- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 금속 옥살레이트 화합물은 양극활물질 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 내지 5 중량%로 포함되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 코팅층의 두께는 5nm 내지 1㎛인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 양극활물질의 평균 입경(D50)은 3㎛ 내지 30㎛인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질.
- 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 제조하는 단계;상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하여 혼합물을 형성하는 단계; 및상기 혼합물을 열처리하여 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 금속 옥살레이트 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 제조하는 단계;옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 제조하는 단계;보론 전구체를 제조하는 단계;상기 보론 전구체와, 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자를 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 형성하는 단계;상기 제1 혼합물을 1차 열처리하여 상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자 표면에 보론 화합물을 포함하는 제1 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;상기 제1 코팅층이 형성된 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 형성하는 단계; 및상기 제2 혼합물을 2차 열처리하여 상기 제1 코팅층 상에 제2 코팅층을 형성하는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 13 또는 청구항 14에 있어서,상기 옥살산 또는 금속-옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 내지 5 중량%로 포함되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 13에 있어서,상기 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 300℃의 온도 범위에서 실시하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 13에 있어서,상기 리튬-니켈계 전이금속 산화물 입자와 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체를 혼합하는 단계에서, 보론 전구체를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 14 또는 청구항 17에 있어서,상기 보론 전구체는 붕산, 보론 옥사이드, 리튬 붕산염, 마그네슘 붕산염, 소듐 붕산염, 칼륨 붕산염, 및 칼슘 붕산염으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 14 또는 청구항 17에 있어서,상기 보론 전구체는 상기 리튬 전이금속 산화물 전체 중량을 기준으로 0.01 중량% 내지 10 중량%로 포함되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 13 또는 청구항 14에 있어서,상기 옥살산 또는 금속 옥살레이트 화합물 전구체는 액상 또는 형태인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 14에 있어서,상기 1차 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 450℃의 온도 범위에서 실시하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
- 청구항 14에 있어서,상기 2차 열처리 단계는 150℃ 내지 300℃의 온도 범위에서 실시하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬 이차전지용 양극활물질의 제조 방법.
