Abstract
無容器浮遊法によりガラス材を製造する際に、ガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制する。 浮遊させたガラス原料塊12にレーザー光を照射することによりガラス原料塊12を加熱融解させて溶融ガラスを得た後に、溶融ガラスを冷却することによりガラス材を得る。第1の照射工程と、第2の照射工程とを行う。第1の照射工程では、浮遊させたガラス原料塊12にレーザー光を照射することによりガラス原料塊12を加熱融解させる。第2の照射工程では、溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を低下させた後にレーザー光の照射を停止する。
Description
本発明は、ガラス材の製造方法に関する。
近年、ガラス材の製造方法として、無容器浮遊法に関する研究がなされている。例えば、特許文献1には、ガス浮遊炉で浮遊させたバリウムチタン系強誘電体の試料にレーザービームを照射して加熱溶融した後に、冷却することにより、バリウムチタン系強誘電体の試料をガラス化させる方法が記載されている。このように、無容器浮遊法では、容器の壁面との接触に起因する結晶化の進行を抑制できるため、従来の容器を用いた製造方法ではガラス化させることができなかった材料であってもガラス化し得る場合がある。従って、無容器浮遊法は、新規な組成を有するガラス材を製造し得る方法として注目に値すべき方法である。
例えば無容器浮遊法により大きなガラス材を製造しようとした場合など、ガラス材にクラックや割れが生じる場合がある。
本発明の主な目的は、無容器浮遊法によりガラス材を製造する際に、ガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制することにある。
本発明に係るガラス材の製造方法は、浮遊させたガラス原料塊にレーザー光を照射することによりガラス原料塊を加熱融解させて溶融ガラスを得た後に、溶融ガラスを冷却することによりガラス材を得るガラス材の製造方法である。本発明に係るガラス材の製造方法は、第1の照射工程と、第2の照射工程とを備える。第1の照射工程では、浮遊させたガラス原料塊にレーザー光を照射することによりガラス原料塊を加熱融解させる。第2の照射工程では、溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を低下させた後にレーザー光の照射を停止する。
本発明に係るガラス材の製造方法では、第2の照射工程において、レーザー光の強度を漸減させることが好ましい。
本発明に係るガラス材の製造方法では、ガラス原料塊を加熱融解させるときに照射するレーザー光の強度P1に対する、レーザー光の照射を停止する直前のレーザー光の強度P2の比(P2/P1)が0.95以下であることが好ましい。
本発明に係るガラス材の製造方法では、成形型の成形面に開口するガス噴出孔からガスを噴出させることにより、成形面の上方にガラス原料塊を浮遊させて保持した状態でガラス原料塊にレーザー光を照射し、ガス噴出孔に、予熱されたガスを供給することが好ましい。
本発明によれば、無容器浮遊法によりガラス材を製造する際に、ガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制することができる。
以下、本発明を実施した好ましい形態の一例について説明する。但し、下記の実施形態は、単なる例示である。本発明は、下記の実施形態に何ら限定されない。
また、実施形態等において参照する各図面において、実質的に同一の機能を有する部材は同一の符号で参照することとする。また、実施形態等において参照する図面は、模式的に記載されたものである。図面に描画された物体の寸法の比率などは、現実の物体の寸法の比率などとは異なる場合がある。図面相互間においても、物体の寸法比率等が異なる場合がある。具体的な物体の寸法比率等は、以下の説明を参酌して判断されるべきである。
(第1の実施形態)
本実施形態では、通常のガラス材をはじめ、例えば、網目形成酸化物を含まないような、容器を用いた溶融法によってはガラス化しない組成を有するガラス材であっても好適に製造し得る方法について説明する。本実施形態の方法によれば、具体的には、例えば、チタン酸バリウム系ガラス材、ランタン-ニオブ複合酸化物系ガラス材、ランタン-ニオブ-アルミニウム複合酸化物系ガラス材、ランタン-ニオブ-タンタル複合酸化物系ガラス材、ランタン-タングステン複合酸化物系ガラス材等を好適に製造し得る。
本実施形態では、通常のガラス材をはじめ、例えば、網目形成酸化物を含まないような、容器を用いた溶融法によってはガラス化しない組成を有するガラス材であっても好適に製造し得る方法について説明する。本実施形態の方法によれば、具体的には、例えば、チタン酸バリウム系ガラス材、ランタン-ニオブ複合酸化物系ガラス材、ランタン-ニオブ-アルミニウム複合酸化物系ガラス材、ランタン-ニオブ-タンタル複合酸化物系ガラス材、ランタン-タングステン複合酸化物系ガラス材等を好適に製造し得る。
図1は、第1の実施形態に係るガラス材の製造装置1の模式的断面図である。図1に示されるように、ガラス材の製造装置1は、成形型10を有する。成形型10は、成形面10aを有する。成形面10aは、曲面である。具体的には、成形面10aは、球面状である。
成形型10は、成形面10aに開口しているガス噴出孔10bを有する。図2に示されるように、本実施形態では、ガス噴出孔10bが複数設けられている。具体的には、複数のガス噴出孔10bは、成形面10aの中心から放射状に配列されている。
なお、成形型10は、連続気泡を有する多孔質体により構成されていてもよい。その場合、ガス噴出孔10bは、連続気泡により構成される。
ガス噴出孔10bは、ガスボンベなどのガス供給機構11に接続されている。このガス供給機構11からガス噴出孔10bを経由して、成形面10aにガスが供給される。
ガスの種類は、特に限定されない。ガスは、例えば、空気や酸素であってもよいし、窒素ガスやアルゴンガス、ヘリウムガス等の不活性ガスであってもよい。
製造装置1を用いて、ガラス材を製造するに際しては、まず、ガラス原料塊12を成形面10a上に配置する。ガラス原料塊12は、例えば、ガラス材の原料粉末をプレス成形等により一体化したものであってもよい。ガラス原料塊12は、例えば、ガラス材の原料粉末をプレス成形等により一体化した後に焼結させた焼結体であってもよい。また、ガラス原料塊12は、例えば、目標ガラス組成と同等の組成を有する結晶の集合体であってもよい。
ガラス原料塊12の形状は、特に限定されない。ガラス原料塊12は、例えば、レンズ状、球状、円柱状、多角柱状、直方体状、楕球状等であってもよい。
次に、ガス噴出孔10bからガスを噴出させることにより、ガラス原料塊12を成形面10a上で浮遊させる。すなわち、ガラス原料塊12が成形面10aに接触していない状態で、ガラス原料塊12を保持する。その状態で、レーザー光照射装置13からレーザー光をガラス原料塊12に照射する。これによりガラス原料塊12を加熱溶融してガラス化させ、溶融ガラスを得る。その後、溶融ガラスを冷却することにより、ガラス材を得ることができる。ガラス原料塊12を加熱溶融する工程と、溶融ガラス、さらにはガラス材の温度が少なくとも軟化点以下となるまで冷却する工程とにおいては、少なくともガスの噴出を継続し、ガラス原料塊12、溶融ガラスまたはガラス材と成形面10aとが接触することを抑制することが好ましい。
図3に示されるように、本実施形態では、具体的には、まず、浮遊させたガラス原料塊12にレーザー光を照射することによりガラス原料塊12を加熱融解させる(第1の照射工程)。第1の照射工程においては、レーザー光の強度がP1となるようにレーザー光照射装置13の出力を調整する。強度P1のレーザー光を、ガラス原料塊12が完全に加熱融解する時間T1まで照射する。時間T1は、レーザー光の強度P1や、ガラス原料塊12の大きさ等により適宜設定することができる。時間T1は、例えば、10秒~30秒程度とすることができる。強度P1は、レーザー光源の種類やガラス原料塊12の大きさ等により適宜設定することができる。
次に、レーザー光照射装置13の出力を低下させることにより、溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を低下させ、その後、レーザー光の照射を停止する(第2の照射工程)。本実施形態では、具体的には、レーザー光の強度がP1よりも低いP2となるまで、レーザー光の強度を低下させる。強度P2は、強度P2のレーザー光を溶融ガラスに照射している期間において、溶融ガラスの温度が軟化温度よりも低くならない程度の強度である。ガラス原料塊12を加熱融解させるときに照射するレーザー光の強度P1に対する、レーザー光の照射を停止する直前のレーザー光の強度P2の比(P2/P1)は、0.95以下であることが好ましく、0.9以下であることがより好ましく、0.8以下であることがさらに好ましい。
本実施形態では、時間T1からT2までの間に、レーザー光の強度をP1からP2まで漸減させる。時間T1からT2までの期間(T2-T1)は、例えば、3秒~10秒程度であることが好ましい。もっとも、本発明は、これに限定されない。例えば、強度P1からP2までレーザー光の強度を一気に低下させてもよい。
本発明者は、鋭意研究の結果、驚くべきことに、溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を一旦低下させた後にレーザー光の照射を停止することにより、例えば、ガラス材が大きな場合などにおいても、製造されるガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制できることを見出した。一般的には、製造されるガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制するためには、軟化温度付近から歪点付近までの温度域における冷却速度を低くすることが重要であると考えられており、軟化温度よりも高い温度における冷却速度はクラックや割れに影響しないと考えられている。このため、この事実は、当業者にとって非常に驚くべき事実であった。
溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を一旦低下させた後にレーザー光の照射を停止することにより、製造されるガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制できる理由としては、定かではないが、以下の理由が考えられる。すなわち、溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を一旦低下させた後にレーザー光の照射を停止することにより、ガラス材の中央部と外側部分との温度差の最大値を小さくすることができる。このため、ガラス材の中央部と外側部分との間に生じる内部応力を小さくすることができる。従って、ガラス材にクラックや割れが生じにくくなるものと考えられる。
製造されるガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることをより効果的に抑制する観点からは、第2の照射工程において、レーザー光の強度を漸減させることが好ましい。また、図4に示されるように、レーザー光の強度をP2まで漸減させた後に、レーザー光の強度をP2で保持する期間を設けることが好ましい。期間(T3-T2)は、3秒以上であることが好ましく、5秒以上であることがさらに好ましい。但し、期間(T3-T2)が長すぎると、ガラス材の製造に要する時間が長くなる。従って、期間(T3-T2)は、20秒以下であることが好ましく、10秒以下であることがさらに好ましい。
比(P2/P1)を0.95以下にすることが好ましく、0.9以下にすることがより好ましく、0.8以下とすることがさらに好ましい。レーザー光の強度がゼロになるまで、レーザー光の強度を漸減させてもよい。すなわち、P2=0としてもよい。
ガス供給機構11とガス噴出孔10bとの間に加熱機構14を設け、予熱されたガスをガス噴出孔10bに供給することが好ましい。そうすることにより、ガラス材の外側部分の冷却速度を低くすることができる。よって、ガラス材の中央部と外側部分との温度差の最大値をより小さくすることができる。ガス噴出孔10bに供給するガスの温度を100℃以上とすることが好ましく、200℃以上とすることがより好ましく、400℃以上とすることがさらに好ましい。但し、ガス噴出孔10bに供給するガスの温度が高すぎると、成形型10の温度が高くなりすぎる場合がある。成形型10の温度が高くなりすぎると、溶融ガラスが成形面10aに融着して、ガラス材中に結晶が生じる場合がある。従って、ガス噴出孔10bに供給するガスの温度を1000℃以下とすることが好ましく、900℃以下とすることがより好ましい。
以下、本発明の好ましい実施形態の他の例について説明する。以下の説明において、上記第1の実施形態と実質的に共通の機能を有する部材を共通の符号で参照し、説明を省略する。

第1の実施形態では、複数のガス噴出孔10bが成形面10aに開口している例について説明した。但し、本発明は、この構成に限定されない。例えば、図5に示されるガラス材の製造装置2のように、成形面10aの中央に開口しているひとつのガス噴出孔10bが設けられていてもよい。この場合であっても、第1の実施形態と同様に、溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を一旦低下させた後に、レーザー光の照射を停止することにより、ガラス材にクラックや割れが生じることを抑制でき、ガラス材を安定して製造し得る。

- 浮遊させたガラス原料塊にレーザー光を照射することにより前記ガラス原料塊を加熱融解させて溶融ガラスを得た後に、前記溶融ガラスを冷却することによりガラス材を得るガラス材の製造方法であって、
前記浮遊させたガラス原料塊にレーザー光を照射することにより前記ガラス原料塊を加熱融解させる第1の照射工程と、
前記溶融ガラスに照射しているレーザー光の強度を低下させた後に前記レーザー光の照射を停止する第2の照射工程と、

- 成形型の成形面に開口するガス噴出孔からガスを噴出させることにより、前記成形面の上方に前記ガラス原料塊を浮遊させて保持した状態で前記ガラス原料塊にレーザー光を照射し、
前記ガス噴出孔に、予熱されたガスを供給する、請求項1~3のいずれか一項に記載のガラス材の製造方法。
