Definitions

  • the invention relates to an ampoule opener.
  • An ampoule is a small sealed vial, which is used to contain and preserve liquid or solid products, usually
  • Ampoules are generally made of glass, though plastic ampoules also exist. They are hermetically sealed and comprise a body and a tip, connected by a narrowed neck. Ampoules are opened correctly by snapping at the neck, at a weakened line, in a clean break with no splinters of glass.
  • Ampoules can be opened by using just the hands, but in order to reduce the risk of injury to the hands, different mechanical ampoule openers have been devised, especially for use in the medical sector.
  • EP 1749801 Al discloses an ampoule opener apparatus of relatively complex construction. This apparatus comprises a suction device for removing snapped off ampoule tips, liquid and potential splinters of glass.
  • Another object is to provide an ampoule opener, which reduces risk of spillage of content of ampoules.
  • a further object is to provide an ampoule opener, which can be operated quickly and safely, even in stressful environments with limited space, such as in an ambulance.
  • the ampoule opener comprises a lid to a container or a container and means to snap off a tip of an ampoule, said means being arranged on the side of the lid or container and comprising an insertion tube that protrudes from the side in a downward direction at a sharp angle relative to the side and which has a flexible opening at its outwardly facing end.
  • flexible opening is meant that the opening is somewhat resilient allowing a slight increase in diameter of the opening. The flexibility is such that a grown up person can press the tip of the ampoule having a tip portion with slightly bigger diameter through the opening using finger pressure only.

The user may even insert the tip of the ampoule and leave the ampoule hanging by the neck portion if interrupted.
  • Another advantage of the flexible opening is that the user is provided a tactile feedback that the tip of the ampoule is correctly arranged in the ampoule opener enabling fast and reliable operation of the ampoule opener. Yet another advantage of the flexible opening is that the snapped off ampoule tip cannot fall out of the insertion tube.
  • the dimensions of the flexible opening in the insertion tube's outwardly facing end are constructed such that the tip of the ampoule can be pushed through the opening and be retained by the opening after being snapped off.
