Definitions

  • the present disclosure generally relates to wraparound package labeling, and more particularly, relates to a method of manufacturing wraparound package label for package labeling and a wraparound package label thereof.
  • Package labels are an essential part of packaging all sorts of products. In cases of products that are stored in high moisture environment, labels need to be strong and water resistant to sustain against the high moisture of the environment. Generally, labels of such products are made as wrap around labels, also known as banderole.
  • Banderoles are very common in the present times for packaging consumable products such as dairy products, juices, aerated drinks etc.
  • these packages and / or containers with wraparound are used for packaging products that are sold in portion packs, such as yoghurt, jelly, butter, or other edible products.
  • the banderoles are manufactured by using a paper or plastic film or laminate, which are printed and provided on the outside of the containers by a number of processes such as wraparound application on injection molding or thermoforming or blow molding process or by wrapping around the package.
  • the substrate selected for such labels generally has a high wet strength in order to sustain against moisture while storing these products in cold environments or deep freezers.
  • dairy products may be stored in refrigerators having high moisture environment or dipped in cold water and the material of the package label must be able to retain its strength, shape, printing, gloss etc.
  • Thick paper based substrates are most commonly used as banderole labels which still absorb certain level of moisture over the time and tend to lose their strength and are prone to damage easily during storage, handling or use. Therefore, there is a need for an improved wraparound label and a method of making the improved wraparound label having still greater barrier properties for moisture.

It may be appreciated by a person having ordinary skill in the art that the E-beam curable coating (306) provides stiffness and excellent gloss to the printed surface of the wraparound label (102). Further, the E-beam cured coating (306) increases the water and moisture resistance of the wraparound label and thereby making it resistant to loss in strength due to wetting, retaining the quality of the wraparound label substrate (302).
  • the E-beam cured coating (306) imparts more stiffness and strength to the label substrate (302) making it possible to use a lighter weight paper thereby reducing the cost of the wraparound label (102) and thus the cost of the container (100) having the wraparound label (102). Furthermore, the E-beam cured coating (306) makes the wraparound label (102) alkali resistant, thereby making it resistant to fading, discoloring, and other damages caused due to exposure or contact of the wraparound label (102) to high pH substances such as soaps, adhesives etc.

  • the web (302) obtained at the step 208 having the printed and e-beam cured (306) first surface (304) and hot melt adhesive coating (308) on the second surface (310) is punched or cut into desired length, shape and size of the wraparound label (102).
  • the label (102) is then wrapped around manually or automatically over the preformed containers such that the edges of the label (102) overlap and seal together, in another embodiment the labels are placed manually or automatically inside cavities of the mold before thermoforming, injection molding or blow molding is performed to obtain container (100) with label on the outer surface (106).
  • the wraparound label (102) with E-beam cured coating (306) is advantageous over the existing ones as the E-beam cured coating (306) provides strength and stiffness to the labej (102) and provides excellent gloss and rub resistance to the first surface (304) of the label (102).
  • the E-beam cured coating (306) makes the label (102) water / moisture resistant and alkali resistant, thereby ensuring that the label (102) remains in good condition throughout the shelf life of the container when stored in cold, moist or wet condition. Furthermore, by using the E-beam cured coating (306) on the label (102), the weight and thickness of the substrate (302) web for label ( 02) may be reduced, as the stiffness and the strength is increased by the E-beam cured coating (306). Therefore, the cost of substrate (302) for the wraparound label (102) is reduced significantly, thereby making it a more cost efficient method of making the wraparound labels (102) and thus the package and / or the container (100) having the wraparound label (102) thereof, with added advantages.
