  • the rotating arm 19 may comprise two parts coupled telescopically with one another.
  • the system for adjusting the length of the arm 19 may comprise, as in this embodiment, cam means 25 arranged on the support 21 of the arm.
  • the cam means 25 interacts with a (telescopically) movable part of the arm 19 so as to shorten the arm whilst the tape-carrying end 7 is resting on the rear side of the first product waiting for the front side of the second product to advance fast to come to rest against the end.
  • the cam means 25 may comprise, in particular, a cam profile coupled in contact with a cam follower member 32 (for example of the roller type) arranged on the (radially outer and movable) part of the arm 19 that carries the pad 11.
  • the cam profile may have a horizontal profile portion for controlling a horizontal movement 7 of the pad 11.
  • the tape-carrying end 7 advances in the (horizontal) advancing direction of the products 4 without having, for at least one advancing portion (in particular when the front side of the second product comes to rest on the tape-carrying end 7 to stick to the tape), any motion component in a (vertical) direction that is transverse to the advance of the products, but only a component parallel to this advance. It is possible, as in this case, to arrange a system for tensioning the motion transmission member 20 to compensate for the variations in length of the arm 19.
  • the applying apparatus 1 may comprise, in particular, tape supporting means 26 for supporting the tape whilst the tape-carrying end 7 passes on the product 4 to form a handle gripping portion (for example in the form of a loop) not applied to the product.
  • the tape supporting means 26 may be, for example, movable between an advanced position in which it supports the tape 3, and a retracted position, in which it does not support the tape 3 and does not interfere with the application path of the tape.
  • the tape supporting means 26 may comprise, as in these embodiments, at least one finger member (for example in the form of a peg or protrusion) which can be movable at the command of an actuator (which is not illustrated, for example a pneumatic cylinder).
  • the applying apparatus 1 may comprise, as in the embodiments disclosed here, sensor means 27 arranged for detecting the position of the handle reinforcing elements (of known type) arranged on the tape 3.
  • the sensor means 27 may comprise, for example, a photocell, or other sensor means of optical or also of other type (mechanical, magnetic, ultrasonic, etc).
  • the tape supporting means 26 may be movable in such a manner as to vary (in a vertical and/or horizontal direction) the advanced position (tape support position) for adjusting the formation of the gripping portions (loops) of the handle according to the position of the handle reinforcing elements detected by the sensor means 27.
  • the tape supporting means 26 may support the tape in various tape supporting positions (further up, further down, further forwards or further back) that is adjustable each time according to the detected position of the reinforcing elements.
  • the applying apparatus 1 may comprise, for example, means for cutting the adhesive tape 3 separating a handle.
  • the means for cutting may be carried, in particular, by the tape-carrying end 7 for cutting the tape 3, separating the handle of the first product, after the second product has come to rest against the tape-carrying end 7.
  • This cutting means may comprise, as in these embodiments, a linearly movable blade 28.
  • the cutting means may be driven by a (linear) actuator 29 arranged on the applying pad 11.
  • the cutting actuator 29 may comprise, for example, a (fluid-driven) cylinder with a stem 30 that carries the tape-cutting blade 28.
  • the tape-carrying end 7 of the applying pad 11 may have, as in these embodiments, an outlet 31 for the blade.
  • an applying apparatus 1 gives rise to a method for applying handles to products 4 advancing one after the other.
  • a first step may comprise applying the continuous tape 3 to the front side of the first product (arranged in the handle applying zone).
  • a second step, subsequent to the first step may comprise unwinding the tape 3 to apply the tape to the rear side of the first product.
  • a third step, subsequent to the second step may comprise applying the tape 3 to the front side of the second product by advancing the second product faster than the first product so as to rest the front side of the second product against the tape 3.
  • a fourth step, subsequent to the third step may comprise cutting the tape 3 to form the handle of the first product whilst the tape is applied to the rear side of the first product, and to the front side of the second product.
  • step A the pad 11 has already descended into the free space between the first product and the second product and starts to press on the rear side of the first product.
  • the tape 3 is in this case supported by the tape supporting means 26.
  • the pad 11 moves in a (horizontal) direction parallel to the advancing direction of the products 4, so that the vertical movement of the pad 11 is nil or almost nil.
  • step B whilst the products 4 continue to advance continuously, the second product is advanced faster than the first product (controlled by the means for slowing the products, in this case by the lateral containing member 8) and has thus reached the applying pad 11 so as to adhere to the adhesive tape carried by the pad.
  • the blade 28 protrudes from the tape-carrying end 7 for cutting the tape and separating the carrying handle already formed on the first product.
  • the tape supporting means 26 retracts to return to the inactive position in which it is outside the tape 3.
  • the pad 11 emerges upwards (parallel to itself) to exit from the products 4, whereas the products continue to advance.
  • the tape 3 remains applied to the front side of the second product, so the formation of the handle of a new product starts.
  • the pad 11 has both a horizontal (forward) movement and a vertical (upward) movement.
  • steps F and G the pad 11 has exited from the products and continues upward movement, thus continuing formation of the handle.
  • step H the tape supporting means 26 advances to the active position, in which it can interact with the tape 3.
  • step I the applying pad 11 has already started a (horizontal) return movement, to the inlet zone of the apparatus 1, to start to form the gripping (loop) portion of the handle that is not applied to the product.
  • step L the backward movement of the pad 11, to the inlet zone of the apparatus 1, continues, so that the tape 3 can go to rest on the tape supporting means 26.

  • the next product has already come to rest on the applying pad 11.
  • the adhesive tape 3 is applied to the rear side of a product and to the front side of the product immediately following.
  • the blade 28 cuts the adhesive tape 3 to separate the handle of the product arranged in front.
  • steps B to E the arm 19 rotates (in an anticlockwise direction with reference to the figures) whilst the pad 11 carried by the arm 19 emerges upwards (with a translation motion) to start exiting from the two products.
  • step F the pad 11 is near to being freed of the products.
  • the tape supporting means 26 is carried forwards to the active position above the product being processed (the handle of which is currently being formed) in the zone in which the tape 3 is unwound.
  • step G the applying pad 11 is completely free of the products.
  • the rotation speed of the arm 19 increases to recover the position with respect to the product being processed.
  • steps H and I whilst fast rotation of the arm 19 and the advancement of the products 4 continue, the applying pad 11 is near reaching the intermediate insertion position between two products.
  • the adhesive tape 3 rests on the tape supporting means 26 to create the loop (non-applied gripping portion) of the handle forming the space that will be used to insert the hand and lift the product.
  • step L the advancing speed of the product after the product being processed has increased, supplied by the conveying device 9 (driven faster than the inlet conveyor 10), to approach the applying pad 11 rapidly, whilst the product being processed is slowed by the means for slowing the products (member 8).
  • step M the applying pad 11 has reached the rear side of the product being processed, closing the formation of the handle, whilst the subsequent product has come to rest on the pad 11 to apply the tape to the front side thereof.
  • step A the blade 28 cuts the tape 3 to separate the handle from the rest of the tape and close the cycle.
  • step N shows an identical step to step B, with reference to the new cycle.
  • the apparatus is arranged to apply the handles in a vertical direction. It is nevertheless possible to provide for the apparatus to be arranged to apply the handles in a horizontal or oblique direction.
  • the apparatus for applying handles to the objects may be provided with a device, arranged upstream of the objects processing zone, to apply the reinforcing elements that form the handles (in general made with card) to the tape material.
  • This device (which is not shown) may comprise, in particular, a device of known type. It is alternatively possible to use a tape material (for example unwound from a reel) that also has the reinforcing elements for reinforcing card handles, which reinforcing elements have been previously applied to the tape.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé pour poser des poignées de transport sur des produits qui avancent en continu l'un après l'autre, dans lesquels un ruban adhésif, pourvu de poignées constituées de carton ou d'un autre matériau, est déroulé et glissé sur une extrémité d'un tampon d'application qui pénètre dans un espace défini entre un côté arrière d'un produit et un côté avant du produit suivant qui avance à une vitesse supérieure à celle du produit précédent jusqu'à ce que le côté avant de celui-ci repose contre le tampon reposant contre le côté arrière du produit précédent, ceci assurant une application précise et efficace du ruban sur les deux produits.
