- a lens for coupling the signal light to the optical fiber 150 may be mounted on the optical axis of the fourth emitting unit 149.

- the integrated prism 104 is manufactured from a glass material in which the 5% reflection mirror 143, the 95% reflection mirror 144, and the polarization beam combiner 145 shown in FIG. 4 are sandwiched.
- the integrated prism 104 is easily manufactured in substantially the same procedure as a general prism, without requiring special processing, by cutting the laminated glass material along the broken line shown in FIG.
- the light source 102 is mounted on the substrate 101 according to a marker (not shown) on the substrate 101.
- a marker not shown
- the position of the designed optical axis matches the position of the optical axis of the light source 102.
- the position of the optical axis of the light source 102 can be corrected by the lens 105 mounted later.
- the light source 102 only needs to be mounted with an accuracy of about 100 ⁇ m or less from the design value.
- an assembly apparatus used for mounting an optical component in such an optical module has a mounting accuracy of 1 ⁇ m or less. Therefore, the light source 102 can be mounted with sufficient accuracy.
- the lens 105 is mounted.
- the lens 105 converts continuous light output from the light source 102 into collimated light.
- a camera for example, an infrared camera
- the position of the lens 105 relative to the light source 102 is determined by adjusting the lens so that the position of the continuous light and the beam diameter of the collimated light do not change even when the camera is moved in the optical axis direction.
- the lens 105 is bonded and fixed on the substrate 101 with an ultraviolet curable resin or the like.
- FIG. 6 is a diagram for explaining a method for adjusting the mounting position of the integrated prism 103.
- the integrated prism 103 is aligned with a marker formed on the substrate 101. Since the light emitted from the lens 105 is collimated light, even if the position of the integrated prism 103 is slightly shifted in the left-right direction in FIG. 6, the excess loss of the optical power of the continuous light does not increase greatly. However, when the position of the integrated prism 103 is greatly shifted in the vertical direction in FIG. 6, “collapsing” occurs in the collimated light, which may cause excessive loss in the optical power of the signal light. In addition, when the integrated prism 103 is mounted so as to rotate with respect to the design position, excessive loss occurs in the coupling between the integrated prism 103 and the modulators 110 and 111 due to the angular deviation.
- the mounting position of the integrated prism 103 is adjusted by observing the emitted light from the integrated prism 103 using a camera capable of detecting the emitted light.
- the integration prism 103 is positioned in the rotational direction. Specifically, the position of the integrated prism 103 is adjusted so that the spot position of the emitted light does not change even if the camera is moved in a direction parallel to the emitted light from the integrated prism 103. Thereby, the angle (rotation direction) of the integrated prism 103 is accurately determined.
- FIGS. 7 and 8 are views for explaining a state in which the position of collimated light emitted from the integrated prism 103 is monitored by a camera.
- the left side of FIGS. 7 and 8 is a top view of the integrated prism 103, and the optical axis of the collimated light is indicated by an alternate long and short dash line with an arrow.
- the cross section of the collimated light when the integrated prism 103 is observed with a camera from the output side is schematically indicated by a circle.
- the vertical position of the integrated prism 103 in the drawing is adjusted so that collimated light is incident on the center of the reflection film sandwiched between the prisms as shown in FIG.
- FIG. 8 shows a case where the integrated prism 103 is located below the correct position.
- the 50% reflection mirror 1031 and the 100% reflection mirror 1032 are positioned in parallel to each other. For this reason, when the position of the integrated prism 103 is shifted in the vertical direction of the drawing as compared with FIG. 7, the two collimated lights emitted move in the same direction as shown in FIG. Therefore, the position adjustment of the integrated prism 103 need only be performed for one of the two collimated lights emitted from the integrated prism 103. By this adjustment, the position of the optical axis in the vertical direction in FIG. 7 can be accurately adjusted so that the deviation from the design value is 50 ⁇ m or less.
- the modulators 110 and 111 are mounted on the alignment block 120 mounted on the substrate 101 in advance. Therefore, the modulators 110 and 111 are mounted at predetermined positions without requiring precise optical axis adjustment.
- the optical axes are adjusted using the lenses 106 to 109, when the optical axes of the modulators 110 and 111 are adjusted, a high accuracy is not required in the horizontal position of the optical modulators in the drawing.
- the vertical displacement of the modulators 110 and 111 in the drawing may affect the excess loss of the optical power of the continuous light incident on the modulators 110 and 111.
- the angular deviation of the modulators 110 and 111 is within the range of NA (numerical aperture) of the modulators 110 and 111, the excess loss of optical power does not increase greatly.
- the mounting accuracy in the vertical direction of the modulators 110 and 111 in the drawing has sufficient accuracy due to the alignment block 120.
- the positional deviation of the integrated prism 103 is a main factor of the optical axis deviation in front of the modulators 110 and 111 (on the incident side of continuous light).
- the mounting accuracy of the integrated prism 103 is about 50 ⁇ m, and the positional deviation of the integrated prism 103 of about 100 ⁇ m can be corrected in the next lens mounting process. For this reason, in this embodiment, the integrated prism 103 and the modulators 110 and 111 are optically coupled with low loss.
- the lenses 106 to 109 before and after the modulators 110 and 111 are mounted.
- the lenses 106 and 107 on the incident side of the modulators 110 and 111 are mounted.
- the lenses 106 and 107 are adjusted to positions where the optical power of the continuous light from the light source 102 is most strongly coupled to the modulators 110 and 111. For this reason, when the optical axes of the lenses 106 and 107 are adjusted, the optical power of the light emitted from the modulators 110 and 111 can be measured by temporarily placing a PD on the output side of the modulators 110 and 111. Good.
- the modulators 110 and 111 have a function of monitoring the optical power in the waveguide, the function may be used.
- the lenses 106 and 107 are bonded and fixed at, for example, an ultraviolet curable resin at a position where the coupling efficiency to the modulators 110 and 111 is the highest.
- the optical axis shift between the continuous light emitted from the integrated prism 103 and the modulators 110 and 111 is corrected. If the deviation of the optical axis between the continuous light emitted from the integrated prism 103 and the modulators 110 and 111 is about 100 ⁇ m or less, the continuous light from the light source 102 is modulated with a sufficiently low excess loss. 110 and 111 can be combined.
- the lenses 108 and 109 convert the signal light output from the modulators 110 and 111 into collimated light, and make them enter the half-wave plate 141 and the optical delay plate 142 provided in the integrated prism 104, respectively.
- the lenses 108 and 109 are positioned by monitoring collimated light using a camera in the same procedure as the lens 105 immediately after the light source 102, and are bonded and fixed on the substrate 101 with an ultraviolet curable resin.
- FIG. 9 is a diagram for explaining a method of adjusting the optical axis of the integrated prism 104.
- the outgoing light from the modulator 111 passes through the optical delay plate 142 and is then reflected by the 95% reflection mirror 144 and the polarization beam combiner 145.
- the optical axis of the light emitted from the modulator 111 moves in parallel.
- the light emitted from the modulator 110 moves slightly in parallel in the integrated prism 104 according to Snell's law, but substantially does not move. Therefore, as shown in FIG.
- the angle of the integrated prism 104 can be adjusted by emitting signal light only from the modulator 111 and monitoring the signal light with an infrared camera.
- the relative positional relationship between the two collimated lights incident on the integrated prism 104 can be considered in the same manner as the two collimated lights emitted from the integrated prism 103 shown in FIGS. Therefore, also in the integrated prism 104, in the same manner as the optical axis adjustment of the integrated prism 103, it is possible to adjust the optical axis in a plane by monitoring collimated light using a camera.
- the diameter of the collimated light generated by the lenses 108 and 109 is sufficiently larger than the light receiving diameter of the monitor PDs 112 to 114. For this reason, high accuracy is not required for the mounting positions of the monitor PDs 112 to 114. Therefore, the mounting of the monitor PDs 112 to 114 is relatively easy.
- FIG. 10 is an example of a flowchart showing an assembly procedure of the optical module 100 of the present embodiment described above.
- the light source 102 is mounted on the substrate 101 according to the marker on the substrate 101.
- the position of the lens 105 is adjusted using a camera.
- the position of the integrated prism 103 is adjusted using a camera.
- the modulators 110 and 111 are abutted against the alignment block 120.
- the positions of the lenses 106 and 107 are adjusted by monitoring the intensity of light incident on the modulators 110 and 111.
- step S16 the positions of the lenses 108 and 109 are adjusted using the camera.
