Abstract

본 발명은 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 형성하고 있는 고분자 전해질 막 및 상기 고분자 전해질 막의 계층적 구조에 대칭되는 패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조물을 이용하여 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 제조하는 방법을 제공함으로써, 유효표면적을 증가시키며, 평균 막 두께를 감소 시켜 그 이온 이동 저항 감소시켜 이온 전도도가 향상시킬 뿐만 아니라, 계층적 구조에 의해 막 두께 감소에 따른 기계적 특성 저하 문제를 해결 할 수 있음으로써, 에너지 전지 소자에 유용하게 사용될 수 있는 고분자 전해질 막을 제공한다.

Description

고분자 전해질 막 및 그 제조방법
본 발명은 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 미세구조를 가짐으로써 이온전도도 및 유효 표면적이 증가된 고분자 전해질 막 및 그 제조방법, 이를 사용하는 전기화학적 에너지 소자에 관한 것이다.
차세대 에너지 전지 소자에 관한 연구 개발이 많은 관심을 받으면서, 저렴한 가격, 재료의 유연성, 용이한 가공성, 전지의 안정성 등의 장점뿐만 아니라 전지 소자를 보다 가볍고 얇게 만들 수 있는 특징을 갖는 고분자 전해질 재료가 각광받고 있다.
고분자 전해질(polymer electrolyte)은 크게 두 가지 종류로 구분될 수 있다. 첫째는 산소(O), 질소(N), 황(S) 등의 헤테로 원소를 함유하고 있는 고분자에 전해염을 첨가하여 해리된 염의 이온들이 고분자내에서 이동할 수 있는 고분자 전해질이며, 이러한 종류의 고분자 전해질은 리튬전지 및 태양전지에 응용되고 있다. 또 다른 고분자 전해질은 고분자 사슬 내에 술폰산(SO3H), 인산(PO4H2), 카르복실그룹(COOH), 암모늄그룹(NH4 +)같이 양이온 또는 음이온으로 하전된 고정이온을 포함하고 있는 고분자 소재(polyelectrolyte)로서 이는 연료전지 등에 응용되고 있다.
특히, 고분자 전해질 연료전지 (polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, PEMFC)는 전류 밀도가 높고 운전 온도가 낮으며 부식 및 전해질 손실이 없다는 장점을 가지고 있어 군사용이나 우주선의 동력원으로 개발되기 시작하였으나, 현재는 출력 밀도가 높고 장치가 간단하며 모듈화가 가능하다는 점을 이용하여 자동차의 동력원이나 이동용 전원으로 응용하기 위한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
고분자 전해질 연료전지의 기본 구조는 고분자 전해질 막을 중심으로 양단에 백금 촉매층으로 이루어진 애노드(anode, 연료극)와 캐소드(cathode, 공기극)가 존재하고, 애노드 및 캐소드의 외부에는 각각 다공성 카본(carbon)으로 제조된 기체 확산층이 위치하여 막-전극-기체 확산층 결합체를 형성한다. 이러한 막-전극-기체 확산층 결합체의 양쪽에는 이 결합체를 지지하는 동시에 가스 통로를 형성하는 분리판이 위치하게 되는데, 분리판과 애노드가 위치하는 기체 확산층 사이에는 연료인 수소가 들어가고 분리판과 캐소드가 위치하는 기체 확산층 사이에는 산화제인 산소 또는 공기가 유입됨으로써 연료가스의 전기 화학적 산화 및 산화제의 전기 화학적 환원에 의하여 전기 에너지가 발행한다. 이때 양 전극에서 일어나는 전기 화학 반응 및 총괄 반응은 하기 반응식 1과 같다.

애노드 : H2 → 2H+ + 2e-
총괄 전지 반응 : H2 + 1/2 O2 → H2O
즉, 애노드 및 캐소드에서 수소의 산화 반응 및 산소의 환원 반응이 각각 일어나고 그 반응 결과로 전기와 물이 생성된다. 전지 전체적으로는 수소와 산소가 전지에 유입되어 전기와 열 및 물을 배출하게 되는데, 이때 전지에서 발생되는 전지의 전압은 개회로 상태 하에서 이론적으로 약 1.2V이고 외부에서 부하를 가하면 부하에 따라 전지의 전압이 강하하게 된다. 현재 전지 전압이 0.7 내지 0.6V 일 때 전지 전류는 약 0.4 내지 1.2 A/cm2 정도를 나타내고 있다.
고분자 전해질 연료전지에 사용되는 고분자 전해질 막은 수소이온 전도성을 가지고 있어 연료극(애노드)에서 생성된 수소이온을 공기극(캐소드)으로 이동시키는 역할을 하게된다. 이러한 이온 전도성 매체로서의 고분자 전해질 막의 성능은 연료전지의 성능에 크게 영향을 미치는데, 고분자 전해질 막의 성능을 향상시키기 위한 방법으로는 다음과 같은 것이 있다.
고분자 전해질 막의 성능을 향상시키기 위해서는 첫째, 고분자 막 자체의 당량을 낮추어 이온 전도 활성점의 밀도를 높여주거나, 둘째, 촉매, 반응 기체 및 고분자 전해질 막 계면 사이의 반응 면적을 넓게 함으로써 전해질 막의 단위 부피당 반응 가스의 접촉 면적을 증가시켜 연료전지 성능을 높이는 방법을 사용하거나, 셋째, 촉매와 전해질막 사이의 접촉 저항을 감소시킴으로써 전지의 성능을 향상시키는 방법이 시도되고 있다.
상기 전해질과 촉매층 사이의 계면 저항을 줄이거나 전해질 막의 반응 면적을 넓히기 위해서 여러 가지 표면 개질 방법들이 사용되고 있는데, 이들 방법으로는 전해질 막 위에 거친 표면을 갖는 물질을 압착하여 요철을 형성시키는 방법, 화학적 방법으로 막의 표면을 침식시켜 막의 표면에 요철을 형성시키는 방법, 이온을 막의 표면에 조사(照射)하는 방법 등이 있다. 특히, 이온을 막의 표면에 조사하는 방법으로는 플라즈마(plasma), 코로나(corona), 아크방출(arc discharge), 전자빔(electron beam), 10s-100s keV의 이온빔(ion beam)(Polym. Eng. Sci. 27(11), 861 (1987); Polymer 21, 895(1980) ; Polymer 18, 675 (1977) ; Polym. Eng. Sci. 19, 1373 (1982)) 등의 방법이 있다.
그러나 이러한 방법들은 막의 화학적 구조 변화를 유발시키거나 기계적 강도를 저하시킴으로써 고분자의 표면 물성을 저하시켜 이러한 방법으로 제조된 전해질 막을 연료전지에 사용하는 경우에는 우수한 성능을 갖는 연료전지를 제조할 수 없다는 문제가 있다(J. Electrochem. Soc.: Solid State Sci. Technol. 131(10), 2335 (1984); Polymer, 21, 895(1980)).
본 발명의 과제는 계층적 미세구조가 형성된 고분자 전해질 막 및 그것의 제조방법을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 다른 과제는 상기 고분자 전해질 막 이용하는 에너지 전지 소자, 보다 상세하게는, 고분자 전해질 연료전지를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 과제를 해결하기 위해,
2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 형성하고 있는 고분자 전해질 막이 제공된다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 막은 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 일체로 형성하고 있으며, 하나 이상의 층에 서로 같거나 다른 미세입체패턴이 형성되어 있는 고분자 전해질 막이 제공된다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 막은 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 가지며, 각각의 층은 모두 서로 갖거나 다른 미세 패턴이 음각으로 형성되어 있는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 막의 비표면적은 미세입체패턴이 없는 고분자 전해질 막 대비 1.9배 이상일 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 막의 가장 두꺼운 부분의 두께는 50 μm 이하이며, 가장 얇은 부분의 두께가 10 μm 이상인 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 것 일 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 과제를 해결하기 위해,
a) 기판상에 고분자 전해질 막을 위치시키는 단계;
b) 상기 고분자 전해질 막 상에 2개 이상의 층을 갖는 계층적 구조물을 위치시키는 단계;
c) 상기 기판, 고분자 전해질 막 및 계층적 구조물로 구성된 샌드위치 구조물에 일정 온도 및 압력을 가하여 가열압착함으로써 고분자 전해질 막에 계층 구조를 형성하는 단계; 및
d) 상기 기판 및 계층적 구조물을 고분자 전해질 막으로부터 분리하는 단계;
를 포함하는 계층적 구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막의 제조방법이 제공된다.
일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 계층적 구조물은 상기 2층 이상의 층 중 하나 이상에 미세입체패턴이 형성되어 있는 것일 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 계층적 미세구조물은 상기 2층 이상의 층이 각각 모두 서로 갖거나 다른 미세 입체 패턴이 양각으로 형성되어 있는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 단계 c)의 상기 온도는 고분자 전해질 막 재료의 유리전이온도(Tg) 이하의 온도 및 10 내지 20 kg/cm-2 압력 조건에서 가열압착 되는 것일 수 있다.
본 발명의 또 다른 과제를 해결하기 위해 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 사용하는 에너지 전지 소자를 제공한다.
본 발명의 또 다른 과제를 해결하기 위해 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 사용하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지를 제공한다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 고분자 전해질 연료전지는 상기 고분자 전해질 막의 양쪽 면에 전극으로서 촉매층이 형성된 막전극접합체를 이용하는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 고분자 전해질 연료전지는 상기 막전극접합체의 양면에 기체 확산층을 더 포함할 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 막전극접합체의 전기화학적 활성 면적은 65 m2/g 이상일 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 최대 전력밀도는 H2/O2 화학양론적비가 2.0/9.5 이고, 80℃ 1기압인 조건에서 상기 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조를 갖지 않는 고분자 전해질 막을 사용한 경우보다 40 % 이상 상승한 것일 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 최대 전력밀도는 H2/O2의 화학양론적비가 2.0/9.5 이고, 150 kPa조건에서 상기 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조를 갖지 않는 고분자 전해질 막을 사용한 경우보다 9 % 이상 상승한 것일 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 고분자 전해질 막의 이온 이동에 의한 저항은 상기 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조를 갖지 않는 고분자 전해질 막의 저항 보다 15 % 이상 감소한 것일 수 있다.
본 발명 따른 고분자 전해질 막은 계층적 구조를 가짐으로써, 평균 막 두께를 감소 시켜 그 이온전도도 및 저항특성을 감소시킬 수 있으며, 막 두께 감소에 따른 기계적 특성이 저하하는 문제 또한 해결할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 이용한 연료전지의 막-전극 접합체에 제조에 있어서, 상기 계층적 구조에 의해 표면적이 증가된 고분자 전해질 막상에 직접 촉매층이 코팅됨으로써, 촉매층과 전해질 막 사이의 접촉 저항이 감소되며, 이로 인해, 수소 이온 이동 저항이 감소되어 적은 양의 촉매를 사용하여도 전지의 성능이 향상될 수 있다.

이하에서 본 발명을 상세히 설명한다.
본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질 막은, 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 형성하고 있는 것을 특징으로 한다.
도 1은 일 구현예에 따른 계층적 미세구조 고분자 전해질 막의 단면도이다.
도 1을 참조하면, 상기 고분자 전해질 막은 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 가지며, 각각의 층은 모두 서로 갖거나 다른 미세 패턴이 음각으로 형성되어 있다. 상기 미세 패턴의 크기(직경)은 50 nm 내지 900 μm 의 범위에서 선택할 수 있다. 도 1에는 모든 층에 미세 패턴이 음각으로 형성되어 있는 것을 도시하나, 각 층에 미세 패턴이 전혀 형성되어 있지 않거나 이들 중 하나의 층에만 미세 패턴이 음각으로 형성되어 있는 것도 가능하다.
상기와 같은 구조를 갖는 상기 고분자 전해질 막은 평평한 구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질막에 비해 그 비표면적이 1.9배 이상 증가될 수 있다.
또한, 도 1을 참조하면 상기 고분자 전해질 막의 가장 두꺼운 부분의 두께(L1)는 50 μm 이하일 수 있으며, 가장 얇은 부분의 두께(L3)는 10 μm 이상일 수 있고, 상기 가장 얇은 부분과 가장 두꺼운 부분 사이에 형성되는 층의 두께(L2)는 10 내지 50 μm의 사이의 값을 갖는 것일 수 있다. 상기 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막은 전체적인 막의 평균 두께를 감소시킴으로써, 옴(Ohm)의 법칙에 의한 저항, 즉 이온의 이동거리에 비례하여 증가하는 저항을 감소시킴으로써, 이온 전도도를 향상시킬 수 있다.
또한, 상기와 같은 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막은 두께 감소에 의한 이온 이동 저항을 감소시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 계층적 구조의 구조적 특징으로부터 두께 감소에 따른 기계적 강도의 저하현상 또한 개선시킬 수 있다. 또한, 각 층마다 형성된 미세구조는 고분자 전해질의 현저히 증가된 비표면적을 유도함으로써, 이온과 전해질 막의 접촉 면적을 증가시킴으로써 이온의 이동 저항이 감소될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질 막을 제조하는 방법은,
a) 기판상에 고분자 전해질 막을 위치시키는 단계;
b) 상기 고분자 전해질 막 상에 2개 이상의 층을 갖는 계층적 구조물을 위치시키는 단계;
c) 상기 기판, 고분자 전해질 막 및 계층적 구조물로 구성된 샌드위치 구조물에 일정 온도 및 압력을 가하여 가열압착함으로써 고분자 전해질 막에 계층 구조를 형성하는 단계; 및
d) 상기 기판 및 계층적 구조물을 고분자 전해질 막으로부터 분리하는 단계;
를 포함하는 제조방법으로 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 제조할 수 있다.
상기 기판으로는 예를 들면, 실리콘 기판, 금속 기판, 고분자 기판, 유리 기판, PET 필름 등이 사용될 수 있으며, 상기 고분자 기판으로는 열가소성 고분자가 사용되는 것이 바람직할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 전해질 막으로 사용되는 고분자로는 통상의 고분자 전해질 막 또는 이온교환막으로 사용되는 고분자는 제한 없이 사용가능하며, 예를 들면, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드(PEO), 폴리프로필렌옥사이드(PPO), 폴리에틸렌이민(PEI), 폴리에틸렌설파이드(PES), 폴리비닐아세테이트(PVAc), 폴리에틸렌숙시네이트 (PESc), 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드(PVdF), 폴리아크릴로나이트릴(PAN), 폴리메틸메타아크릴레이트(PMMA), 폴리비닐클로라이드(PVC), 폴리에테르 케톤(PEK), 폴리벤즈이미다졸(PBI), 술폰화 폴리이미드, 술폰화 폴리아릴에테르술폰, 술폰화 폴리에테르에테르케톤, 술폰화 폴리벤즈이미다졸, 술폰화 폴리술폰, 술폰화 폴리스티렌, 술폰화 폴리포스파젠 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나일 수 있으며, 바람직하게는 술폰화 폴리이미드, 술폰화 폴리아릴에테르술폰, 술폰화 폴리에테르에테르케톤, 술폰화 폴리벤즈이미다졸, 술폰화 폴리술폰, 술폰화 폴리스티렌, 술폰화 폴리포스파젠과 같은 술폰화 폴리이미드계에서 선택되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 계층적 미세구조물은 2층 이상의 층을 가지며, 각각의 층은 모두 서로 갖거나 다른 미세 입체 패턴이 형성되어 있어 상기 고분자 전해질 막 상에 상기 구조물에 형성된 미세 입체 패턴에 대칭되는 패턴을 형성시킬 수 있다. 상기 계층적 미세구조물은 예를 들면, 폴리우레탄 아크릴레이트(Polyurethane acrylate; PUA), 폴리디메틸실록산(Poly-Dimethylsiloxane: PDMS), ETFE(Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene), PFA(Perfluoroalkyl acrylate), PFPE(Perfluoropolyether), PTFE(Polytetrafluoroethylene) 에서 선택되는 하나 이상을 포함하는 폴리머 스탬프와 같은 고분자, 또는 산화실리콘(SiO2)와 같은 무기물을 단독으로 또는 2 이상 혼합하여 제조된 것일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 고분자 전해질 막에 계층적 미세패턴을 전사시키는 계층적 미세구조물은 UV경화를 이용한 임프린트 리소그래피 방법 혹은 가열로 인한 고분자 중합 방식으로 제조된 몰드를 이용하여 제조된 것일 수 있다. 상기 몰드는 UV경화시 산소농도에 따른 부분 경화층을 이용하는 방법으로 제조된 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 갖는 형태의 일 수 있다. 예를 들면, 제1 고분자 패턴막에 부분 경화층을 형성시키고, 상기 부분 경화층에 제2 패턴을 형성함으로써, 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 구조물을 제조할 수 있는 몰드를 형성할 수 있으며, 상기 단계를 반복함으로써, 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 갖는 몰드를 제조할 수 있다. 상기 몰드에 상기 계층적 미세구조물을 형성하는 고분자 수지 조성물을 캐스팅 및 몰딩함으로써 본 발명에 따른 계층적 미세구조물이 제조될 수 있다. 상기와 같은 몰드를 이용하여 제조된 계층적 미세구조물의 미세패턴은 주로 양각의 미세패턴이 형성되어 있을 수 있으며, 따라서 상기 계층적 미세구조물로 제조된 본 발명의 고분자 전해질 막은 그에 대칭되는 음각의 미세패턴이 형성되어 있을 수 있다.
계층적 미세구조물 및 그 제조 방법에 대한 일 구현예로는 본 출원과 동일자로 제출되는 대한민국특허출원 제10-2015-0007294호를 참조할 수 있으므로 여기에서는 구체적인 설명을 생략한다.
일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 계층적 미세구조물을 가열압착하여 고분자 전해질 막에 패턴을 형성하는 단계 c)에서 상기 가열되는 온도는 고분자 전해질 막으로 사용된 재료의 유리전이온도(Tg) 이하의 온도 및 및 10 내지 20 kg/cm-2 압력 조건에서 10 내지 60분 동안 가열압착되는 것일 수 있다. 예를 들면, 나피온(Nafion)으로 제조된 고분자 전해질 막은 나피온의 Tg 온도인 140 ℃ 보다 낮은 온도인 120 ℃ 부근에서 가열압착 될 수 있다.
상기한 방법으로 제조된 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막은 이온 전도도, 즉 이온 이동에 대해 낮은 저항성을 요구하는 에너지 전지 소자에 적용될 수 있다.
고분자 전해질 재료는 저렴한 가격, 재료의 유연성, 용이한 가공성, 전지의 안정성 등의 장점으로 인해 고분자 전해질을 활용한 전기화학적 에너지 전지 소자에 관한 연구가 많이 이루어지고 있다. 이러한 에너지 전지 소자 적용에 있어서 에너지 전지 소자의 박막화 및 나노기술이 함께 적용되면서 전지를 보다 가볍고 얇게 만들 수 있는 기술이 중요하게 여겨지고 있다.
상기 고분자 전해질(polymer electrolyte)은 크게 두 가지 종류로 구분되어 에너지 전지 소자에 사용될 수 있는데, 첫째는 산소(O), 질소(N), 황(S) 등의 헤테로 원소를 함유하고 있는 고분자에 전해염을 첨가하여 해리된 염의 이온들이 고분자 내에서 이동할 수 있는 고분자 전해질이며, 이러한 종류의 고분자 전해질은 리튬전지 및 태양전지에 응용되고 있다. 또 다른 고분자 전해질은 고분자 사슬 내에 술폰산(SO3H), 인산(PO4H2), 카르복실그룹(COOH), 암모늄그룹(NH4 +)과 같이 양이온 또는 음이온으로 하전된 고정이온을 포함하고 있는 고분자 소재로서 이는 연료전지 등에 응용되고 있다. 본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질은 레독스플로우전지(RFB: Redox Flow Battery)의 이온 교환막에도 유용하게 적용할 수 있다. 상기한 에너지 전지 소자에 사용되는 고분자 전해질 막 또는 이온교환막에 본 발명의 계층적 미세구조를 형성할 수 있는 기술을 적용함으로써, 보다 얇은 두께를 가지면서도 기계적 물성이 유지됨과 동시에 미세패턴이 형성되어 비표면적이 높은 전해질막을 제조할 수 있어 이온 이동에 의한 저항이 감소함으로써, 이온전도도의 향상을 유도할 수 있으며, 따라서 전지의 성능향상에 효과적일 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질 막은 낮은 평균 두께 및 높은 비표면적을 가짐으로써, 고분자 전해질 연료전지에 보다 효과적으로 적용될 수 있다.
이하 본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질을 이용한 고분자 전해질 연료전지에 대해서 상세하게 설명한다.
본 발명은 계층적 미세구조가 형성된 고분자 전해질 막의 표면에 촉매를 코팅시켜 전극을 제조함으로써 촉매와 전해질 막 사이의 접착력과 접촉 면적을 증가시키는 효과를 나타내는 막전극접합체를 이용하여 제조된 고분자 전해질 연료전지에 대한 것이다.
본 발명은 계층적 구조를 가짐으로써 막의 물성을 저하시키지 않으면서 막의 평균 두께를 감소시킬 수 있고, 평평한 구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막에 비해 계층적 구조와 미세패턴이 복합적으로 형성되어 있어 표면적을 증가시키는데 바람직하다.
본 발명에 사용된 고분자 전해질로는 일반적으로 수소 이온 전도성 고분자 전해질로서 많이 사용되는 나피온(Nafion) 고분자 막 계통의 폴리퍼플로오르 설포네이트 (polyperfluoro sulfonate) 고분자 막 등이 있다. 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 이용해 연료전지에 사용되는 막-전극 접합제를 제조하기 위해 먼저 막의 표면을 전처리하는 것이 필요할 수 있다.
상기 막 표면의 전처리는 고분자 전해질 막 상의 금속 오염 물질을 제거하기 위하여 2 내지 5 중량%의 과산화수소수에 넣고 온도 약 80℃에서 1시간 동안 끓인 후, 끓는 초순수에서 세척한다. 상기 금속 이온을 제거한 고분자 전해질 막을 H+ 수소이온 형태의 이온 전도성 막으로 전환시키기 위하여 고분자 전해질 막을 0.5 M의 황산 용액에 넣고 온도 약 80℃에서 1시간 동안 끓인 후, 다시 초순수에서 세척하고 건조시킨다.
본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질 막은 표면적이 크게 증가되기 때문에 전처리된 고분자 전해질 막 위에 촉매를 직접 코팅하여 촉매층과 고분자 전해질 막 사이의 접착력과 접촉 면적이 증가시킴으로써, 촉매층 즉, 전극에서 발생된 수소이온이 전해질 막으로 용이하게 이동할 수 있어 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 사용하여 제조되는 연료전지의 성능을 증가시킬 수 있다.
상기 개질된 고분자 전해질 막의 표면에 촉매층을 형성시키기 위해서는 먼저, 미세 분말의 카본블랙(carbon black) 담체에 백금이 담지된(이하 Pt/C라 함) 촉매 또는 백금-루테늄 합금이 담지된 촉매에 테프론(폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌)을 코팅하여 발수처리를 한 후, 이것을 이용하여 코팅용 촉매 슬러리를 제조할 수 있다.
상기 촉매를 이용해 슬러리를 제조하는 방법은 먼저, 일정량의 백금 또는 백금-루테늄 합금 촉매를 용매에 넣고 여기에 나피온 이오노머(ionomer) 용액을 첨가하고 초음파 교반기로 교반하여 촉매 입자가 잘 분산된 촉매 슬러리를 제조할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 전해질 표면에 촉매를 직접 코팅하는 직접 코팅법에 의해 연료전지의 전극을 제조하는 방법은 고분자 전해질 막의 양쪽 표면에 촉매층을 코팅함으로써 이루어지게 되는데, 이때 촉매층을 고분자 전해질 막에 형성시키는 방법으로는, 예를 들면, 스프레이 코팅법(spray coating), 스크린 프린팅법(screen printing), 브러쉬법 (brushing), 테이프 캐스팅법(tape casting), 데칼 공정(decal process) 등이 사용될 수 있으며, 바람직하게는, 스프레이 코팅법이 사용될 수 있다. 스프레이 코팅법은 촉매 입자들이 고분자 전해질 막 표면의 음각 부분에 접착하게 되면 촉매층과 고분자 전해질 막 사이의 접촉 면적이 증가하게 되는데, 이러한 원리로 촉매 입자들과 전해질 막의 표면과의 접촉을 증가시키는 방법으로는 스프레이 코팅법이 가장 효과적일 수 있다.
촉매층과 전해질 막 사이의 접촉 면적이 증가하게 되면 연료극인 애노드 쪽의 촉매층에서 형성된 수소 이온이 전해질 막으로 이동하거나 또는 공기극인 캐소드 쪽에서 전해질 막으로부터 촉매층으로 수소 이온이 이동할 때의 저항이 감소하게 되기 때문에 표면적이 증가된 고분자 전해질 막을 포함하여 제조되는 연료전지의 성능이 향상될 수 있다.
상기 제조되는 촉매 슬러리 중 백금 또는 백금-루테늄 합금의 함량은 촉매 총 중량에 대하여 10 내지 50 중량%로 하는 것이 우수한 성능을 갖는 연료전지를 제조하는데 바람직할 수 있다. 상기 나피온 이오노머의 사용량은 촉매 슬러리 중의 나피온 함량이 건조 중량 기준으로 촉매 무게의 1/2 내지 1/5로 사용하는 것이 바람직할 수 있다.
상기 촉매 슬러리를 제조하는데 사용될 수 있는 용매로는 이소프로판올, 노말-부틸아세테이트 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 증점제는 촉매 슬러리의 점도를 증가시키기 위해서 첨가될 수 있는데, 본 발명에서 사용할 수 있는 증점제로는 글리세린(glycerin), 디메틸술폭사이드(dimethylsulfoxide) 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 제조된 촉매 슬러리를 공기압을 이용한 분사장치를 사용하여 고분자 전해질 막의 양쪽 표면에 균일한 두께로 코팅한 후 실온에서 12시간 동안 건조시킨다. 이때 고분자 전해질 막의 한 쪽 면에 코팅된 촉매의 양은 단위 전해질 막 면적 당의 백금량을 기준으로 0.05 내지 0.4 mgPt/cm2 가 되도록 한다. 이 양은 종래 연료전지에 사용되는 촉매량에 비하여 매우 작은 양일 수 있다.
고분자 전해질 막에 코팅된 촉매량이 적으면 촉매층이 얇아짐으로써, 촉매층에서의 물질 전달 저항이 감소하여 반응 기체의 공급과 생성된 물의 제거가 원활해질 수 있으며, 촉매층에서의 이온 전달에 의한 저항이 현저하게 감소하게 되어 전극 활성을 높이는 장점이 있는 반면, 촉매의 절대량이 작아지면 반응 활성점이 적게 되어 연료전지에 필요한 화학반응을 수행할 수 없기 때문에 전체적으로는 전극 성능이 떨어질 수 있다. 그러나 본 발명의 고분자 전해질 막을 이용한 막전극접합체는 고분자 전해질 막이 높은 반응 표면적을 가짐으로써, 촉매층과 전해질 막 사이의 접촉 저항이 감소되어, 수소 이온 이동 저항이 감소하기 때문에 적은 양의 촉매를 사용하여도 전지의 성능이 향상될 수 있다. 상기 막에 코팅된 백금의 양이 상기 범위보다 적은 경우에는 반응 활성점이 적어지게 되어 전지 성능이 저하될 수 있으며, 사용량이 상기 범위보다 많은 경우에는 공정 비용이 증가하는 문제가 생길 수 있다.
따라서 본 발명에 의한 고분자 전해질 막을 사용하여 촉매층을 직접 코팅하는 방법을 사용하여 제조된 막전극접합체의 사용은, 전극의 성능이 크게 향상시킬 수 있으며, 적은 양의 촉매를 사용하여도 연료전지의 성능을 현저하게 향상시킬 수 있다.
상기 제조된 막전극접합체의 양쪽 면에 기체 확산층 역할을 하는 테프론 처리된 다공성의 카본종이 또는 카본 천을 얹은 형태로 전해질 막-전극-기체 확산층으로 이루어진 접합체를 구성하여 연료전지를 제조할 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명을 더욱 명확히 하기 위해 다음과 같은 실시예를 제공할 수 있으나, 하기 실시예로 본 발명이 한정 되는 것은 아니다.
실시예 1
도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 50μm 두께의 Nafion 막 상에 직경 800nm, 20μm, 500μm 의 미세패턴이 각층에 단계적으로 형성된 계층적 미세구조물(10)을 120 ℃, 10 내지 20 kg/cm2의 압력 조건에서 가열압착하여, 멀티스케일을 갖는 고분자 전해질 막(20)을 제조한다. 상기 제조된 고분자 전해질 막의 주사현미경(SEM) 사진을 도 3에 나타내었다.
상기 제조된 고분자 전해질 막을 3 중량%의 과산화수소수에 넣고 온도 약 80℃에서 1시간 동안 끓인 후, 끓는 초순수에서 세척하였다. 상기 금속 이온을 제거한 고분자 전해질 막을 H+ 수소이온 형태의 이온 전도성 막으로 전환시키기 위하여 고분자 전해질 막을 0.5 M의 황산 용액에 넣고 온도 약 80℃에서 1시간 동안 끓인 후, 다시 초순수에서 세척하고 건조시켜 고분자 전해질 막의 표면을 전처리 하였다.
실시예 2
도 3에 도시된 바와 같이, 직경 800nm의 패턴을 갖는 Nafion 막을 이용하는 것을 제외하고 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 고분자 전해질 막의 표면을 전처리 하였다.
실시예 3
도 3에 도시된 바와 같이, 직경 20μm 의 패턴을 갖는 Nafion 막을 이용하는 것을 제외하고 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 고분자 전해질 막의 표면을 전처리 하였다.
실시예 4
도 3에 도시된 바와 같이, 직경 500μm 의 패턴을 갖는 Nafion 막을 이용하는 것을 제외하고 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 고분자 전해질 막의 표면을 전처리 하였다.
비교예 1
계층적 미세구조물이 없는 평평한 Nafion 막을 이용하는 것을 제외하고 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 고분자 전해질 막의 표면을 전처리 하였다.
제조예
<촉매 슬러리 제조>
백금 촉매(Pt/C)(Johnson Matthey)함량이 40 중량%가 되도록 나피온 이오노머(ionomer)와 2-프로판올 용액(Sigma Aldrich)이 혼합된 용액에 첨가하고 교반하여 촉매 입자가 잘 분산된 촉매 슬러리를 제조하였다.
<막전극접합체의 제조>
상기 실시예 1 및 비교예 1에서 제조한 전처리된 고분자 전해질 막의 양면에 촉매 슬러리를 스프레이 공법으로 코팅한 뒤 실온에서 12시간 동안 건조시켜 막전극접합체를 제조하였다.
<단위전지의 제조>
상기 제조된 막전극접합체에 기체확산막(SGL 35 BC)을 접합시켜 연료전지를 제조하였다.
실험예
<실험예 1: 전기화학적 활성 평가-CV(Cyclic Voltammogram)>
상기 제조된 접합체는 연료전지의 전기화학적 활성 평가를 위해 다음과 같은 방법으로 CV(Cyclic Voltammogram)를 측정하였다.
상기 제조된 막전극접합체의 전기화학적 활성을 평가하기 위해서 먼저, 상기 제조된 연료전지에 반응가스를 공급하고, 연료전지를 무부하 또는 부하 상태로 유지하는 등의 준비과정을 마친 후, 막 및 전극의 전해질 수화를 위해 가습된 공기를 공급할 수 있다. 이때, 가습을 위해 제공되는 가스는 질소, 산소, 수소 및 불활성 가스 모두를 포함할 수 있으며, 바람직하게는 100 %의 상대습도를 갖는 수소 및 질소 가스가 공급될 수 있다.
다음, CV 측정 단계에서 음극(애노드)에는 수소를 공급하고 양극(캐소드)에는 질소를 공급하여, 0.05V 내지 1.2 V 전압범위에서 100 mV/s의 승압속도로 산화환원에 의한 전기화학적 활성을 측정할 수 있으며, 이를 통해 전기화학적 활성 면적(EAS, electrochemical active surface)을 측정할 수 있다. 이때, 상기 측정은 실온에서 수행되는 것일 수 있다. 상기 측정된 결과를 도 5에 나타내었다.
상기 측정 결과로부터 하기 수학식 1의 식을 이용하여 전기화학적 활성 면적을 계산할 수 있다.

상기 식으로 계산된 값을 표 1에 나타내었다.
<실험예 2: 전력밀도 측정>
단위 전지를 제조하여 80 ℃ 온도 조건으로 전력밀도 평가를 진행하였다.
이때, 각각의 전극에 공급되는 H2/O2 또는 H2/air의 화학양론비는 H2/O2 = 2.0/9.5, H2/air = 2.0/2.0 이며, 상기 공급가스의 기압이 낮을 때의 전력밀도와 150kPa 압력조건에서의 전력밀도를 측정하였다.
상기 전력밀도 평가 결과를 도 6 및 표 1에 나타내었다.
<실험예 3: 임피던스 측정(EIS)>
단위전지를 제조하여 상기 단위전지의 임피던스(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy: EIS)(IM6, Zahner)를 측정하였다. 단위전지의 EIS 측정은 조건은 0.6 V의 전압 조건에서 10 mV의 진폭으로 0.1 Hz 부터 100 Hz 범위에서 진행되었다.
상기 EIS 측정 결과를 도 7에 나타내었다.
상기 EIS 측정 결과를 이용하여 도 8에 도시된 등가회로를 이용하여 각각 요소에 대한 저항값 및 CPE(constant phase element)를 계산하여 표 2에 나타내었다.
상기 CPE는 전극의 시간적 변화에 따른 젖음도를 나타내는 파라미터이다.

상기 결과로부터 본 발명의 고분자 전해질 막을 이용한 연료전지는 얇은 두께 및 표면적이 현저하게 증가된 고분자 전해질 막을 포함함으로써, 전기화학적 활성 반응면적이 증가하였고, 이온 이동에 의한 저항이 감소하는 효과로부터 이온 전도도가 향상될 수 있고, 이러한 효과들로부터 연료전지의 성능이 향상되는 결과가 나타났다. 본 발명은 얇은 두께 및 증가된 비표면적을 갖는 고분자 전해질 막을 연료전지의 막전극접합체 제조에 이용함으로써, 소량의 촉매를 사용하여 성능이 우수한 전극을 제조할 수 있어 성능이 현저하게 향상된 연료 전지를 제조할 수 있다.
본 발명 따른 고분자 전해질 막은 계층적 구조를 가짐으로써, 평균 막 두께를 감소 시켜 그 이온전도도 및 저항특성을 감소시킬 수 있으며, 막 두께 감소에 따른 기계적 특성이 저하하는 문제 또한 해결할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 고분자 전해질 막을 이용한 연료전지의 막-전극 접합체에 제조에 있어서, 상기 계층적 구조에 의해 표면적이 증가된 고분자 전해질 막상에 직접 촉매층이 코팅됨으로써, 촉매층과 전해질 막 사이의 접촉 저항이 감소되며, 이로 인해, 수소 이온 이동 저항이 감소되어 적은 양의 촉매를 사용하여도 전지의 성능이 향상될 수 있다.

  1. 두 개 이상의 층을 갖는 계층적 구조를 형성하고 있는 고분자 전해질 막.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 일체로 형성하고 있으며, 하나 이상의 층에 서로 같거나 다른 미세입체패턴이 형성되어 있는 고분자 전해질 막.

    상기 고분자 전해질 막은 2층 이상의 계층적 구조를 가지며, 각각의 층은 모두 서로 갖거나 다른 미세 패턴이 음각으로 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질 막.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자막의 비표면적이 미세입체패턴이 없는 고분자 전해질 막 대비 1.9배 이상 증가하는 것인 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질 막의 가장 두꺼운 부분의 두께는 50 μm 이하이며, 가장 얇은 부분의 두께가 10 μm 이상인 계층적 미세구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막.
  6. a) 기판상에 고분자 전해질 막을 위치시키는 단계;
    b) 상기 고분자 전해질 막 상에 2개 이상의 층을 갖는 계층적 구조물을 위치시키는 단계;
    c) 상기 기판, 고분자 전해질 막 및 계층적 구조물로 구성된 샌드위치 구조물에 일정 온도 및 압력을 가하여 가열압착함으로써 고분자 전해질 막에 계층 구조를 형성하는 단계; 및
    d) 상기 기판 및 계층적 구조물을 고분자 전해질 막으로부터 분리하는 단계;
    를 포함하는 제1항 내지 제5항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 계층적 구조를 갖는 고분자 전해질 막의 제조방법.
  7. 제6항에 있어서,
    상기 계층적 구조물은 2층 이상의 층 중 하나 이상의 층에 미세 입체 패턴이 양각으로 형성되어 있는 것인 고분자 전해질 막의 제조방법.
  8. 제6항에 있어서,
    상기 계층적 미세구조물은 2층 이상의 층이 각각 서로 갖거나 다른 미세 입체 패턴이 양각으로 형성되어 있는 것인 고분자 전해질 막의 제조방법.
  9. 제6항에 있어서,
    상기 단계 c)의 상기 온도가 고분자 전해질 막의 유리전이온도 이하의 온도 및 10 내지 20 kg/cm- 2 압력 조건에서 가열압착 되는 고분자 전해질 막의 제조방법.
  10. 제1항 내지 제5항 중 어느 한 항의 고분자 전해질 막을 사용하는 에너지 전지 소자.
  11. 제1항 내지 제5항 중 어느 한 항의 고분자 전해질 막을 사용하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  12. 제11항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질 막의 양쪽 면에 전극으로서 촉매층이 형성된 막전극접합체를 포함하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  13. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 막전극접합체의 양면에 기체 확산층을 더 포함하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  14. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 막전극접합체의 전기화학적 활성 면적이 65m2/g 이상인 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  15. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질 막에 코팅된 촉매의 양이 단위 전해질 막 면적당 백금량을 기준으로 0.05 내지 0.4 mgPt/cm2인 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  16. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 최대 전력밀도가 H2/O2 화학양론적비가 2.0/9.5 이고, 80℃ 1기압인 조건에서 상기 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조를 갖지 않는 고분자 전해질 막을 사용한 경우보다 40 % 이상 상승하는 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  17. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 최대 전력밀도가 H2/O2의 화학양론적비가 2.0/9.5 이고, 150 kPa조건에서 상기 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조를 갖지 않는 고분자 전해질 막을 사용한 경우보다 9 % 이상 상승하는 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
  18. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질 막의 이온 이동에 의한 저항은 상기 미세패턴을 갖는 계층적 구조를 갖지 않는 고분자 전해질 막의 저항 보다 15 % 이상 감소하는 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질 연료전지.
