Abstract

 発光エネルギーが約300meV低エネルギー化した半導体単層カーボンナノチューブおよびその製造方法を提供することを課題とし、大気中で半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに直接紫外光を照射する方法を採用することにより、大気中にオゾンを発生させて半導体単層カーボンナノチューブにグラム量の酸素原子を導入させ、発光エネルギーが約300meV低エネルギー化した半導体単層カーボンナノチューブを得る。

Description

近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ
 本発明は、近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ及びその製造方法に関し、特に、発光波長が長波長化した半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ及びその製造方法に関する。
 カーボンナノチューブ(以下、CNTともいう)は、炭素原子が平面的に六角形状に配置されて構成された炭素シート(いわゆる、グラファイトからなるシート)が円筒状に閉じた構造を有する炭素構造体である。このCNTには、多層のもの及び単層のものがあるが、単層CNT(以下、SWCNTともいう)の電子物性は、その巻き方(直径や螺旋度)に依存して、金属的性質又は半導体的性質を示すことが知られている。
 半導体SWCNTは、生体透過性の良い近赤外域(800~2000nm)で光吸収および発光することから、細胞や生体の機能を検出する蛍光プローブとして極めて有用なものと期待される。なかでも、1200~1400nmの波長領域は、最も生体透過性が良い領域である。
 その半導体SWCNTに酸素原子や官能基を導入することによって、発光波長を変化させることができる。例えば、SWCNTを界面活性剤で分散した水溶液にオゾンを添加した水を混合し、光を照射しながら化学反応させることによって、ナノチューブ壁中の炭素を一部酸素原子に置き換える(非特許文献1、2)。このようにして酸素原子を導入した場合、ほとんどの酸素原子はSWCNT壁にエーテル結合し、SWCNTの発光エネルギーは元の発光エネルギーよりも約150meV小さくなる。このような化学修飾にはSWCNTの発光量子収率を増加するという利点もある。
 その他、半導体SWCNTに有機合成の手法を用い、共有結合的に官能基を導入することによって、発光エネルギーを約160~260meV減少させることができる(非特許文献3、4、5)。例えば、ヘキサン酸を結合させた場合、SWCNTの発光エネルギーは260meV低エネルギーシフトし、その発光はトリオン生成によるとされている(非特許文献5)。

 前述のとおり、半導体SWCNTへの酸素又は官能基を導入することにより、発光エネルギーを低エネルギー化して、発光波長を長波長化することが知られてはいるものの、非特許文献1~5で報告されている発光波長の長波長化では、現在最も研究されているSWCNTのひとつであるカイラル指数(6,5)をもったSWCNTに対して、その発光波長は、近赤外蛍光プローブとして最も好ましいとされている約1300~1400nmより短い、約1140nm(約1.088eV)にピークを有するものが主な生成物であった。
 本発明は、このような事情に鑑みてなされたものであって、これまで以上の大きな発光エネルギーシフトを達成して発光波長を長波長化することを目的とするものであり、特に、組織又は生体用の透過性近赤外蛍光プローブとして好ましい、生体透過性を有する波長に、その発光波長のピークを有する半導体SWCNTを得ることを目的とするものである。
 本発明者らは、上記目的を達成すべく鋭意研究を重ねた結果、非特許文献1、2のようなオゾンを含有するSWCNTの分散液に紫外線を照射する湿式の方法に代えて、大気中でSWCNTに直接紫外光を照射する方法を採用することにより、大気中にオゾンを発生させSWCNTを酸化処理することで、短時間で簡便にグラム量のSWCNTに酸素原子を導入させることができ、その発光波長のピークが980nm(1.265eV)から1280±13nm(=0.9686±0.01eV)に変化すること、すなわち、得られたSWCNTの発光エネルギーがこれまでで最も大きな296±10meV低エネルギーシフトすることを見出した。
 本発明はこれらの知見に基づいて完成に至ったものであり、本発明によれば、以下の発明が提供される。
[1]大気中で半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに直接紫外線を照射することにより、オゾンを発生させて半導体単層カーボンナノチューブを酸化処理することを特徴とする近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブの製造方法。
[2]前記紫外線を、基板上に薄膜状に形成された半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに照射することを特徴とする[1]に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブの製造方法。
[3]前記酸化処理を、密閉された空間で行うことを特徴とする[1]又は[2]に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブの製造方法。
[4][1]~[3]のいずれかの製造方法で製造された近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブであって、発光エネルギーが低エネルギーシフト化していることを特徴とする近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
[5]発光エネルギーが296±10meV低エネルギーシフトしていることを特徴とする[4]に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
[6]発光波長のピークが1280±13nm(=0.9686±0.01eV)にあることを特徴とする[4]又は[5]に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
[7]半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに酸素原子が導入されている[4]~[6]のいずれかに記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
[8]前記酸素原子が主としてエポキシドとして導入されている[7]に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
 本発明によれば、従来法では達成し得なかった発光エネルギーが296±10meV低エネルギー化した半導体SWCNTを得ることができる。また、本発明を、カイラル指数(6,5)を持つSWCNTに適用すると、その発光波長のピークは約980nm(=1.265eV)から、生体透過性をより有する1280±13nm(=0.9686±0.01eV)へと変化するため、細胞や生体用の近赤外蛍光プローブとして好ましい波長帯に発光波長のピークを有するものが得られる。
本発明の方法により酸素を結合させた、カイラル指数(6,5)をもつSWCNTが中心の試料とその元試料についての2次元発光マップを示す図。 カイラル指数(6,5)をもつSWCNTが中心の試料の約980nmと約1280nm発光強度の酸化処理時間依存性を示す図。 非特許文献1、2に示される手法によって酸素を結合させた、カイラル指数(6,5)をもつSWCNTが中心の試料についての2次元発光マップを示す図。
 本発明は、半導体SWCNTに酸素原子を導入することにより発光エネルギーが低エネルギーシフト化した近赤外発光する半導体SWCNTを製造する方法において、大気中で半導体SWCNTに直接紫外線を照射することにより、オゾンを発生させて半導体SWCNTを酸化処理することを特徴とするものである。そして、本発明の方法により製造された近赤外発光する半導体SWCNTは、発光エネルギーを296±10meV低エネルギーシフトすることができ、特に、カイラル指数(6,5)を持つSWCNTに適用すると、その発光波長のピークは約980nmから1280±13nmへと変化する。
 通常、大気中で紫外光を照射する手法は、基材表面の付着物の分解除去や殺菌処理等に用いられている手法であって、その原理は、大気中の酸素は波長184.9nmの紫外線を吸収してオゾン(O3)を発生し、発生したオゾンは更に波長253.7nmmの紫外線を吸収して原子状活性酸素(O)を発生することによるとされている。
 紫外線を照射する手法はSWCNTにも用いられており、例えば、特許文献1では、SWCNTに特定の単波長の光を照射して励起状態とし、励起状態にあるSWCNTを酸素で酸化させることにより、特定の構造のCNTを選択的に燃焼して消滅させ、該CNTとは異なる構造を有するCNTを選択的に得るとしている。
 本発明の方法は、従来のようにSWCNTを消滅させることなく、SWCNTに酸素を導入するものであり、しかも、これまでの湿式の方法では達成しえなかった、296±10meVの発光エネルギーシフトを達成することができるものであり、そして、前記のカイラル指数(6,5)を持つSWCNTを同手法で酸素導入すると、その発光波長のピークは約980nm(=1.265eV)から約1280nm(=0.9686eV)へと変化し、近赤外蛍光プローブとして好ましい、より生体透過性を有する波長帯に発光波長のピークを有するものとなる。
 すでに記載したように、これまで半導体SWCNTへの酸素又は官能基の導入による発光エネルギーの低エネルギーシフトについては種々の検討がなされているが、特に、上記非特許文献6では、酸素ドープされたSWCNTの電子状態計算について報告されており、その中で、エポキシド化した場合、SWCNTの発光エネルギーを310meV低エネルギーシフトさせると計算している。
 該非特許文献6の記述によれば、非特許文献1,2等の従来の湿式による方法では、ほとんどの酸素はSWCNTとエーテル結合しているために290meVを超える低エネルギーシフトが不可能であったが、本発明の方法によれば、導入された酸素はほとんどがSWCNTとエポキシドを形成し、これによりSWCNTの発光エネルギーを296±10meV低エネルギーシフトさせることが可能となったものと推定することができる。
 本発明において、半導体SWCNTの合成方法やそれにより得られる半導体SWCNTの直径は特に限定されず、公知の化学気相成長法、アーク放電法、レーザー蒸発法等の方法によって合成することができるが、好ましくは、触媒の存在下において化学気相成長法で合成される直径0.6~1nm程度の半導体SWCNTが用いられる。
 本発明におけるオゾン発生方法としては特に限定されないが、密閉された空間内でおこなうことが好ましく、例えばUVオゾンクリーナ等の、紫外光を大気に照射することによってオゾンを発生する装置が好ましく用いられる。
 また、紫外光の照射条件は、用いる装置によって異なるが、後述する実施例2のように、照射によりSWCNTが破壊されない条件下で行うことが必要である。
 また、大気中で半導体SWCNTに直接紫外線を照射するために、あらかじめ基材上に半導体SWCNTを膜状に形成しておくことが好ましく、特に、酸素を導入される半導体SWCNTに均一に化学反応がおこるために、厚さ1μm程度の薄膜状にしておくことが好ましい。
 以下、本発明を実施例に基づいて説明するが、本発明はこの実施例に限定されるものではない。
 [実施例:紫外線照射によりオゾンを発生させて酸化処理した半導体SWCNT試料]
 本実施例では、元試料に、CoMoCAT法により合成された、カイラル指数(6,5)をもつSWCNTが中心のものを用いた。
 該SWCNT1.0mgを、直径47mmのメンブレンフィルター上に広げ、UVオゾンクリーナ(PC―450,Meiwafosis Co.,Ltd.)(光源:水銀ランプ、波長184.9、253.7nm等;電源:100V、0.5A)で0~600秒、酸化処理をおこなった。
 その後、ナトリウムドデシルベンゼンスルホン酸塩(SDBS)0.1mgと重水10mL中で混合し、超音波処理(VIBRA-CELL VCX-500,Sonics and Materials Inc.)を10分間おこなうことで酸化SWCNTを分散させた。この分散液を1時間、超遠心処理(Himac CS100GXII,Hitachi Koki)(ローター:S52ST、回転数:35000rpm)した後、上澄み液中に存在する酸化SWCNTを取り出した。
 図1は、得られた酸化SWCNT-SDBS重水溶液と酸化処理前のSWCNT-SDBS重水溶液から得られた2次元発光マップである(Fluorolog FL3-2TRIAX/iHR320,HORIBA)。図中、縦軸は励起波長であり、横軸は検出波長である。
 図の上段に示すとおり、酸化処理前の試料においては、カイラル指数(6,5)のSWCNTのバンド間遷移に由来する励起波長約570nm、発光波長約980nmの発光ピークが主に観測される。一方、図の下段に示すとおり、180秒処理したものでは、励起波長は変わらず、発光波長が約1280nmに長波長シフトした発光ピークが観測され、この発光波長のシフトはSWCNTに酸素原子が導入されたことによるものである。
 [実施例2]
 本実施例では、前述のカイラル指数(6,5)をもつSWCNTが中心の試料の980nmと1280nmの発光強度の、酸化処理時間依存性を調べた。
 図2は、発光強度の酸化処理時間依存性を示す図であり、縦軸は発光強度、横軸は照射時間である。
 図2に示すとおり、酸化SWCNT由来の1280nm発光(-●-)は、バンド間遷移に伴う980nm発光(-▲-)の減少と共に増加し、180秒で極大に達する。そして、その後反応時間の増大と共に強度が減少する。この発光強度減少は過度な酸化反応によってSWCNTの構造が壊されていっているためと推測される。
 [比較例:従来法により酸化処理した半導体SWCNT試料]
 図3は、非特許文献1、2で示されている従来法によって酸化処理したSWCNT試料から得られた2次元発光マップである。
 具体的には、オゾン発生器(SO-03UN-OX05,Hamanetsu)より取り出した酸素・オゾン混合ガスを、3mLの重水中に約1分間通し、オゾンに由来する波長260nmの吸収ピークの吸光度がおよそ1.0になるまでバブリングした。このオゾン含有重水2mLと、SWCNTを1重量%SDBS重水溶液に分散し、超遠心処理によって得られた上澄み溶液400μL、重水1.6mLを混合し、波長254nmの紫外光をトランスイルミネータ(CSF-20AC,コスモバイオ)(強度:6400μW/cm)で1分間照射し、酸化SWCNT溶液を得た。
 図3に示すとおり、従来法で調整した酸化SWCNT溶液では、酸化処理により、主として約1140nm(約1.088eV)の発光が観察され、酸素がSWCNT壁にエーテル結合していると推測される。
 また、この方法では、混合するオゾン水の量、光照射の時間や波長を変更しても、実施例1のような、SWCNTと酸素をエポキシド化させたことに由来すると推測される1280nmの発光のピークの増大は確認できなかった。

Claims (8)

  1.  大気中で半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに直接紫外線を照射することにより、オゾンを発生させて半導体単層カーボンナノチューブを酸化処理することを特徴とする近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブの製造方法。
  2.  前記紫外線を、基板上に薄膜状に形成された半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに照射することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブの製造方法。
  3.  前記酸化処理を、密閉された空間で行うことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブの製造方法。
  4.  請求項1~3のいずれか1項に記載の製造方法で製造された近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブであって、発光エネルギーが低エネルギーシフト化していることを特徴とする近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
  5.  発光エネルギーが296±10meV低エネルギーシフトしていることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
  6.  発光波長のピークが1280±13nmにあることを特徴とする請求項4又は5に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
  7.  半導体単層カーボンナノチューブに酸素原子が導入されている請求項4~6のいずれか1項に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
  8.  前記酸素原子が主としてエポキシドとして導入されている請求項7に記載の近赤外発光する半導体単層カーボンナノチューブ。
